"Pleasantly surprised. Very nice hotel, great location and staff was very friendly and good at what they do. Room was nice, not the best view, but we were gone most of the time seeing the sites. We would definitely stay again."

"The hotel was great! Right in the heart of Little Italy and close to everything. The Valet's were amazing as was the check in clerk. Breakfast came with our room and we were able to park the whole next day why we went sightseeing. I would definately go back!"

"The lobby of the hotel and restaurant are very trendy looking and clean. Front desk staff and valet were wonderful, but that's where it stops. Stay somewhere else.
Pros: Nice staff, comfy beds, clean smelling sheets, and great location in Little Italy (San Diego)
Cons: Cheaply renovated rooms (gaps between door and door frame, bathroom doors weren't painted properly, etc.), dirty walls and doors, photos posted by hotel are not the actual quality of the rooms, overly priced , valet parking is costly, complimentary buffet breakfast consists of 4 items, and safety was a concern."

"This was a last minute weekend getaway to San Diego. Got a pretty good deal online. Compared price and location to other websites. This place was close enough to Gas Lamp District. Cab ride was $6.00 to $7.00 bucks plus tip. We got a couple of drink vouchers good for a couple of Bud Lights. The overnight parking of 22.00 was a bit steep. The rooms were nice and clean. I would come back to this place again."

"We booked at Porto Vista because it was too good of a deal to pass up. However, I was concerned and almost dreading seeing the place after reading so many bad reviews. For our experience, these were all unfounded. The location is excellent - right in little Italy and yet a short distance away from Gaslamp. Taxi to Gaslamp was always between $6 - $8, excellent! The view from the rooftop bar level is incredible. Little Italy is so fun.
Staff was so friendly...maybe just 1 very minor complaint about 1 lady in the front desk not being too friendly on our last day. But everyone else was wonderful. We didn't bring a car - came in via plane and train - and didn't rent one because we figured the location would be ideal, so we didn't have to pay for the valet parking. Our room was great. Like that there is a mini fridge, thought the mini sink for the 'kitchenette' was convenient. No issues with the bathroom door, shower, shower temperature, etc. Bed was super comfy. Liked all the drawers as we were staying for 4 nights. I think the only minor issue with the room was the lack of counter/storage space in the bathroom. It was a pedestal sink so no counter and there was a small (maybe 3' tall) leaning open shelf as the storage area. So if you bring a lot of stuff, it's challenging. I always have a whole host of things for my eyes (I wear contacts) which did end up all fitting, just challenging.
All in all, we completely enjoyed our stay. The hotel cannot help if the other guests are wearing heels and walking down the halls, or rolling their luggage. The halls are outside and without carpet so of course there will be some noise. We were lucky and did not have loud hard core party goers during our stay, or maybe we were so sound asleep in the comfy bed that we didn't notice? It is a 3-star hotel and we knew this going in. It exceeded both of our expectations. I would definitely stay at Porto Vista again and would recommend this hotel to friends."

"The Porto Vista Hotel is in a great location and from the front looks like a very upmarket boutique hotel. However, behind the facade it looks more like an old fashioned motel. The room we had was quite small and, due to the fact that access to rooms was via open walkways, very noisy. The other downside was that the only window looked out on to the walkway so the curtains had to be pulled to maintain privacy which meant the room was permanently dark.
The choice of free 'cocktail' was limited to local beers, wine or well drink and was dispensed with very bad grace.
We did not eat any meals at the hotel but the quality of restaurants within a few blocks was excellent.

"Had I paid more I would have been unhappy. Restaurant was very nice, good food, great view. Despite the fact that all staff seemed to be working hard, they seemed short staffed. On the second day, our room was not cleaned, even though I called the front desk and requested cleaning and told them I would have drinks in the bar for an hour to allow time. They said they would send someone up. When the person finally arrived I was in the shower getting ready for the evening. The tip I had laid out earlier for service returned to my wallet!"

"We did not enjoy our stay at this hotel. We could hear everything. People walking, dragging their suitcases, people jumping on the second floor, people taking showers or using the toilet. The complimentary breakfast was lousy and took for ever. It was not self serve. There was only one elevator and it was always busy. The shower head was broken. The bathroom door was getting stuck every time we wanted to open the door. The valet parking was also the bell boy and the receptionist was also working in the restaurant. I think that the staff was trying hard to pretend that it was a nice hotel but it was not. We cancelled the second night stay and got out. We had never stayed in such a hotel before."

"This hotel was a real gem. Really cute, nice staff, great bar restaurant with a awesome view of the ocean. I give it only 4 out of 5 stars bc their hot water was broken the morning we left, cold shower!! EIIK!!! But bc of the cold shower woe's they gave us free valet, so that more than makes up for it. If you are going to stay in SD, I'd stay here, its in little italy, NOT in any sketchy area of downtown. My boyfriend and I went to a concert at the House of Blues and the Courtyard marriot a much fancier place was honestly more in a creepy area of downtown than where we stayed at Porto Vista. I'd recommend this place to anyone that is looking for a deal!"

"When we arrived we were not offered our comp drinks, we had to ask or them after we heard another couple being offered by the front desk associate. The room was small. The bathroom was small and the bed was hard. The shower head was broke so the shower were sucky! We requested maintenace twice before it was fixed on our last day. Housekeeping was great and prompt. I wouldn't stay again. The pictures online decived the actual hotel itself. It was alson pretty noisey. You can hear walking and stuff being drug up the hallways. The Glass Door restraunt was over priced and not romantic at all."

"Room was left unclean for 2-days or 3 and only cleaned after 3 or 4 visits to the front desk. Tub - shower controls never worked.
Location is very good & the Little Italy area is near (walking for the adventureous) to downtown & Balboa Park.
Staff new & untrained ( i believe). They had no information about neighborhood food, events or modes of travel other than personal vehicle or cab.

"This hotel was the worst hotel I have ever stayed at. It was extremely noisy. You could hear people walk up and down the halls, and the room above us you would hear them dragging the chairs around the room. Outside the bar, around 1:00 a.m., you could hear people partying, drinking, talking and laughing out loud. I finally had to call the attendant downstairs to tell them to stop and to go to their rooms. It took the attendant awhile before he or she addressed the issue. I do not recommend this hotel to conservator couples, just party couples. The jacuzzi tub was extremely small wherein two people do not fit. Even one person could not stretch out your legs because the tub is too small. If I would had known the conditions of the hotel, I would had spent a little bit more money, and stay at a different hotel which met my expectations."

"We stayed here over Memorial Day weekend and we found it to be clean, comfortable and well run. The staff was busy but courteous. We had to wait a half hour to check in and we used our drink vouchers to go up to the Glass Door and have a beer and take in the view. Fabulous harbor and LIttle Italy views. We walked down to the waterfront in minutes and down India St for a great Italian meal. For me the hotel room was fine for the price. The bedding was much nicer than you'd find in a motel and I don't watch a lot of TV when I'm on vacation but ours worked fine. I like having a minifridge and microwave, wasn't expecting that. The bathroom vanity is small but I liked the sliding glass patio doors, it was quirky and gave the bath a lot of light. And the ceiling height in the room we had on the 5th floor was amazing. We'll go back."

"Everything, from the valet service, the staff, the room, the view, to the lounge was top-shelf. Everything...well, except the 'World's Slowes't elevator & no bathroom shelving (for my girlfriend's curling iron) to the size- or should I say, lack of size of the tub...for those romantic candlelight bubble baths. Seriously, the less-than perfect things were simply whimsical topics of discussion and in no way detractors from our overall experience! We have already made recommendations to friends & family as well as plan on returning ourselves."

"The hotel is in a good location ~ there are SO many good restaurants in Little Italy. The front loby is very nice, but the rooms are awful; old, no sunlight, no view, and only the bare necessities inside. Once inside, your room definitely feels like a motel off the highway. This hotel might be okay if you are traveling with friends and need a place to sleep and shower, but if you're taking a short trip with your significant other or going to San Diego to relax this is not the place for you. However, if you could care less about your room then the hotel is fine. There's a nice outdoor sitting area on the second floor and the bar / restaurant is very cute, I would recommend the bar even if you are not staying at this hotel. Wont be staying here again."

"Excellent location, but not so great, I was expecting a more upscale hotel in my humble opinion it falls more under the category of a 'upscale motel', the hotel has 4 levels, the parking garage is located on the basement level, and each level allows views of the parking cars below, that is terrible as the noise factor was unbearable. Then, there was people running around on hallways, yelling and constantly opening and shutting doors at the wee hours in the morning, dogs barking next door. I needed to get some rest and sleep, since I had come to SAN to run a marathon, that was a mission impossible here. Definitely I will not come back to this hotel . On the positive side the staff was helpful."

"I stayed at this hotel the weekend of May 3rd to May 6th of 2012. The outside of the building was okay. the neighbhood is around 'Little Italy which had some nice restuarants. In walking distance of harbor, downtown, and trolly. The rooms were less than average you could hear people walking above you. The person next door was smoking weed and I could smell it and caught a contact. The entrance door was not properly fitted, there was 1/2 inch gaps in the side and bottom of the door. I stayed in room 334 and I noticed that the floors were not vaccumed on a regular. I say this because I noticed a green gummi bear on the floor and it was there when I left. You at least expect your room to be properly cleaned daily. The shower tub was caulked poorly and the water pressure from the shower was weak. The maids acted like they did not speak english. I really did not spend much time in the room since I went Mexico and hung out on the town. I am not a complainer but the service was poor. The lounge was nice I had a good time at happy hour, it did have a nice view from the fourth floor. Meals were a little pricey but good overall. If you stay at this hotel check your room good before you get settled in. The valet was very friendly and helpful, the front desk staff was not very unattentive to guest in my opinion."

"I wanted to stay in the downtown area but not spend $300. I had been to the restaurant at this hotel before and it seemed like a nice little hotel from the outside. The staff was decent/ok when I checked it. The room was clean but basically the same as any motel room. Nothing special what so ever. When I booked the room it said it came with 2 complimentary drinks at check in. I was never offered them, not a big deal but just dont offer it then. It also said you had to be 21 yrs old to stay at the hotel but there were loud children everywhere. The biggest problem was the noise. The children were loud in the morning but from about 5 pm to 3am it sounded like a frat house. Tons of drunk teens (yes, these kids were in high school) and young adults were running around all over the hotel. I'm in my 20s... I know people come to downtown to party but it literally sounded like these people were in our room! The whole hotel overlooks a parking lot so everything echos and on top of that it looked as if our hotel door was open or cracked the whole time which probably didn't help. If you are looking to stay near downtown but don't want to pay a lot just go to the motel or somewhere like that and save yourself some money."

"This was an awesome hotel for the money. The front desk staff was very helpful the day we checked in and it didn't change for our entire stay. We did book a single and they had us down for a double but quickly upgraded us to a suite. We did not partake in the restaurant or roof top patio so I can't speak to those options but if I were to say any bad thing about this hotel would be the elevator was sloooow and got crowded often. Our room was incredible and the hotel was quaint and very convenient to Little Italy, the pier and close to the Gas Lamp area. The parking was a bit high and inconvenient but we walked everywhere so we didn't really have a need for a car during our stay."

"Room was dark, crowded and in disrepair. Had to air out the room because it smelled like heavy duty cleaning chemicals. Had to unplug the lamp to turn it off because the switch was broken. Only one bedside table, electrical outlet cover was broken, no TV guide, brochures or any collateral in room. Pedestal sink had no shelf or vanity for a travel kit, water diverter (tub to shower) was stuck in the shower position. Paid $30/night upgrade to a room with a narrow balcony that had no chairs to sit on and overlooked a construction site. Body wash in place of shampoo, lotion was half used by previous guest. On my checkout day I had the do not disturb sign on my door and house keeping was pounding on my door two hours before my check out time. Saving grace was the staff in the bar which had daily happy hour and great views from the 4th floor. Plated continental breakfast included in my room rate was coffee or tea, cold cereal and a 2 1/2' diameter danish with no other options offered. Do yourself a favor. Stay somewhere else but join them for happy hour"

"We recently stayed here at the end of February. We went out to San Diego for a mini honeymoon, and we were highly disappointed. First - We told the front desk it was our Honeymoon a week in advance and booked a king room. We got a room with 2 twins. Second - the restaurants food was not good, prices were super high on drinks and food. Third - There was no parking or breakfast. Pay to park was $22 a day, so we chose not to even rent a car the entire time, which cut out part of our vacation. Fourth - the outdoor patio upstairs looked great, behind the locked gate that we couldnt get up to. Overall im glad we chose it to be a mini honeymoon and not stay the full time. I was very very unhappy with the hotel. I would recommend it to some college kids who dont care, but not for a couple looking for a good time."

"My daughter and I booked this weekend as a special getaway (mom and daughter time). We read the online reviews of over 8 hotels and decided on PV because of it's price and location. We checked in our room and was surprised at how small the room was :( Called (front desk) and expressed our disappointment in our room and he upgraded our room on the spot and met us at our original hotel room and made the transition very easy and didn't even think twice at accommodating us on our weekend. After checking into a second room we were so impressed and immediately felt that we made the right hotel choice. The valet (yes, expensive at $22 a night) it was worth the price due to parking around that area is difficult to find and I felt my car was safe in their parking lot then a public one.
Glass Door restaurant had a cool vibe to it and the bar has a great atmosphere.
The service in the hotel was above and beyond from the guys who work the front desk. Both were very friendly and welcoming as well as happy to assist us whenever we asked for directions or guidance on where to go in the city.
People who work the valet were also very prompt, courteous and more than friendly with us the whole weekend.
I can't express how much fun we had on our mini vacation and believe me when I say Porto Vista was the perfect choice for us!!

"Location, location, location! Is the best way that I could describe it...but wait that was probably the best part of it. We arrived at Porto Vista Hotel at 1:30ish and we were informed that our room wasn't cleaned. We were told that it would be ready at 3:00p.m. with the reassurance that it would be we left and walked over to the Farmers Market happen 2 blocks away. We got back at 3:33p.m. and to our surprise they had no room for us or the other 4 guest waiting for their rooms. We waited in the lobby, all other guest were given complementary drinks coupons so the up to bar. I must say that the desk clerk was calm and professional. Ten minutes later we finally got our room, & our drink coupon. I was not happy with our room being in front of the parking lot. My son managed to get us a different room, that one was better.
Fast forward to the next morning, we decided to have our breakfast at the hotel restaurant, the view was beautiful (I understand why it is named what its' named). Sadly though they weren't ready for us there either; no eating utensils, no napkins. We had to ask for all of that and the jam for our 1 toast (most places gives you 2 toast).
Would I recommend it to other people, probably yes, because of where is located but I would give them fair warning. The valet parking is a plus, the gentlemen that work it were professional and pleasant.
Thank You"

"This hotel was not anything like the pictures. I was picturing a hotel with high cielings, a nice pool and hot tub to relax in at night, free parking? (22 dollars to valet your car, or you can 'park on the street' like they said, but there is a lot across the street that you can get for cheaper than 20) or even just friendly staff. This hotel provided none of these things. Besides not even giving me my welcome cocktail (a selling point on this particular hotel) they seemed like they didnt care if I asked anything, or if they could call the room next to me about the screaming baby. The front of this place looks great. THE ROOMS AVERAGE like 150. Shower looked like it was made by a 3 year old in the arts and crafts room. Save yourself the trouble, even though I got the room at 2/3 price (which the staff will NOT respect you for). You gotta take into the account that you must valet your car there in a sketchy lot where the pool should be."

"I was aprehensive about this place but once we were got to our room we were pleasently surprised. It was on the 4th floor a King w/ balcony and next to the restauraunt. It was quite and had a beautiful view of the ocean even thought there was a construction site across the street. They were not working during our stay so there was no noise.I would definetly stay there again."

"A good two star hotel that tries hard. Nice restaurant with good views though its menu is 20% overpriced and not very imaginative (for example the hotel is in Little Italy, but I don't recall seeing any Italian dishes on the menu. Very friendly and helpful staff. "
