i had the joy of staying at this beautiful hotel 5 years ago, and confess the experience was quite different this time around. we were given a room kinda/sorta like the one we reserved, except that it was handicap accessible (nice if ya need it. we didn't) and was literally in THE noisiest spot a room could be on a Friday night... the sweet young man at the front desk apologized for the error (we were a late check in, they gave our room away. that said? eventually they blamed us for making the b...
i had the joy of staying at this beautiful hotel 5 years ago, and confess the experience was quite different this time around. we were given a room kinda/sorta like the one we reserved, except that it was handicap accessible (nice if ya need it. we didn't) and was literally in THE noisiest spot a room could be on a Friday night... the sweet young man at the front desk apologized for the error (we were a late check in, they gave our room away. that said? eventually they blamed us for making the booking "mistake". what what??) and offered to move us into a more suitable room the next day...
since, as i said, we arrived late (flew out from CT) we missed the cutoff time for room service (10:30pm? wow) so we inquired about a place to eat off property. a helpful staff member sent my beloved husband (of 31 years) and i to a bar across the street... alas, tho they MAY have been serving food, blasting music and swarms of happily inebriated 30-somethings were our clues that maybe this wasn't our "best" choice. so we headed down the street and found another restaurant and had a nice meal.
breakfast on the spectacular patio the next day could not have been better... our server was perfect. those ocean views are beyond spectacular... access to the beach is easy and allows for long/leisurely walks (and/or runs!) along the shoreline. happy happy, joy JOY.
unfortunately, we were not able to switch rooms (hotel was full) but we were offered an upgrade for the next (our last) night, which was nice. an "upgrade" we discovered, that cost us an additional $125. oh, but the rate of our original room had dropped from $399 to $299, so the room "only" cost $425. score!
that said? the room we had for our last night was perfect. even had a partial view of the ocean. dinner (via room service) was yummy... so one perfect -- and perfectly romantic -- night outta 3 ain't bad!
ok, so i DO love this hotel -- the space, the food, the ambiance, the view -- and thought, overall, that the staff members we encountered were friendly and adorable. my complaints are as follows:
A) we wound up with a room that in no way met our expectations
B) we reserved a room that, according to the website, was $359 a night. however, we were charged $379 1st night and $399 the second. and, not to be too picky, but there was NO effort to maybe knock off a few bucks because, hey, that wasn't the room we wanted?
C) surprise! when ya reserve via their website, nowhere is there a mention of the $35 per night fee for valet parking (we rented a car)
D) surprise! surprise!! NOR is there a mention of the $78 a DAY you'll be paying for some "Del Mar access fee" (or whatever) yoiks! (hidden fees tick me off, can ya tell?)
we spent 3 pleasant nights and 3 sun-drenched days in an overall lovely space, had a total of 2 meals, for the... hmmm? maybe-less-than-reasonable price of $1760.
honestly? even THAT would be a great deal IF our accommodations had been what we anticipated. truth be told, this would be a 5 star (or is it "circle"? whatever, you know what i mean) review had a manager offered even a small concession for the unfavorable room. amazing how far one kind gesture will get ya... sadly, that didn't happen which is why we will NOT be staying there again.
so that's my story and i'm stickin' with it....
on a related note: since we DID wind up in a "wheel chair accessible" space, i couldn't help but wonder how someone in Actual Neez of it wound have felt about the zero counter space in the bathroom and/OR the fact the hairdryer was on a high shelf in the low-ish closet. was there enough room for a wheelchair to move past the bed in that cramped space to reach the teeny/tiny patio? i'm thinkin'... maybe not.
