"My family enjoyed our long holiday weekend getaway. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. We were upgraded to pool view room, with no additional charge. Although there was $12 parking/day, cheaper than other hotels in the area were charging.
The room was nice, clean and cozy. My only issue was the small bathroom making it difficult to have more than one person occupying it. We did use the swimming pool and jacuzzi, which both my kids enjoyed. It was cleaned and maintained daily.
The location is very convenient, close to Convention Center and the Fashion Valley Mall for those who loved to shop.
For the value and service, we would definitely return."

"It was wonderful from beginning to end. We were treated to free parking, and both days of free full breakfast. The room was close to the lobby, kept us warm and cozy. The room was clean, carpet clean, stylish decor and no odd or overwhelming bad smells. the room temperature was just right and the mattress very comfortable. We would come again. "Pictures are much better than the real thing. They took an old builiding and tried very hard to make nice. Walls are to thin and you can hear everything. Staff is great and furniture in room is nice. It is just a very old building and the outside is not very pretty as well. Has old Motel look. at 89 to 99 then i believe it is reasonable. I paid much more and got a $20 per night discount which was fare."

"The pictures are definitely more impressive than in real life. I booked a superior King room and found it quite underwhelming. Not only did the room look old and dull, but the staff gave us a room as far as possible from the lobby.
The hotel was extremely crowded, not just from guests but events they were running, we pretty much ended up staying as minimal time as we could.
You need a rental car in San Diego and especially in this area, hotel circle. Its a great location once you have a car. The shuttle is touted as a $15 value, but really its not worth it as it takes a lot of planning (scheduling and then waiting).
On our last night we returned to find our door lock faulty. We couldnt get in and the front desk was very 'it happens' about it. They put us in another room to get some sleep, but we barely slept because we didn't have our stuff. It took them 1.5 hours to fix the lock and let us back in. Terrible experience. We were so exhausted when we boarded our flight.
We were ultimately disappointed with this experience, but I have to call out that one of the late night security guys took very good care of us when we were locked out. He gave me a charger for my phone and kept coming around to check we were ok. He was the only positive thing over the 4 days we stayed here."

"The overall value of booking the trip was good. Nice location in proximity to everything. Front desk staff very friendly. King room comfortable but sink and shower drains slow. Talked to front desk...they thanked us and made note but was not fixed and we were not offered a change of rooms. Stayed for there days...unhappy that room was only cleaned two of the days. Dined @ hotel once / very understaffed. Waited for food 30 minutes / quality average. Could not get check waiting 20 minutes..waitress offered a free piece of cheese cake as an apology. Attempted to get breakfast the next morning. Main restaurant closed. We were directed to lounge area next to pool. One person preparing drinks & taking orders. Informed that wait for food order to be prepared would be 20-30 minutes because staff person had no help and kitchen backed up. Main pool nice. Hot tub dirty & overcrowded with small unsupervised children. Will look at other opportunities on next stay."

"The place was overall Ok. Just old and there were no elevators which I thought was quite strange. Looks like a hotel from back in the day. My sister was staying next to me and their shower shut off a few times, when they called the front they told them sorry we can't accomodate you in anyway because u booked through an agency. That didn't sit well with any of us. Don't think we will be staying there again."

"The Handlery was very clean, staff was friendly, especially the shuttle drivers. The walls ate super thin though, and you can hear everything....and I do mean everything! The pool is very nice, but is open to the public. However, if you go and get a chair by 10, you should be ok. They have a different band play at the pool every Sunday, which is kinda neat. Very close to everything. But, if getting a cab, ask the front desk for their recommended driver. He charges a flat rate, which is much, much lower than the cab companies who will rip you off."

"Great location, easy to find using directions. Very nicely remodeled and renovated property, pictures posted online were true to form! Clean rooms, bathrooms were a tad small, nice flat screen tv's, and plenty of pillows on the bed. Had dinner at the bar one night, $5 hamburger with fries... was amazing! Also loved the happy hour draft prices. Take advantage of the free shuttle! We took it to the zoo and were very happy with our driver and his reccomendations. We would definitely stay there again =]"

"The Handlery Hotel was a great place to stay while enjoying my 45th year high school reunion. It had not been my first choice for hotels but I am glad that I stayed there. The rooms were very clean and I had a corner room so didn't have any noise. The people could not have been nicer. I tried the restaurant for breakfast both days I was there and had ok meals. If you are coming to San Diego and are on a budget this is a good choice. Just a word of advice though-Don't let them put you in a front facing room facing the freeway. Everyone walking by can look into your room and I would think it would have a lot more noise."

"The hotel was lovely & very accomadating. We had booked 3 rooms for a family celebration. They made sure all the rooms wer in close proximity of each other & let us check in an hour early. The rooms were well frunished & clean. They had nice balconys to enjoy the weather. The pool area was family friendly with a shallow & deep end clealy marked, with pleny of chairs & towels.The staff was very friendly & even sent a bottle of champagne to my fathers room for his 75th birthday. We really enjoyed our stay & would recommend this hotel to anyone."

"I was very disappointed staying at this hotel. Thought it would atleast be up to the Marriott Courtyard standard, but it wasn't. The rooms were small, and the celing had a stain. It was dated and moderate. The hotel pictures make it look so much nicer and trendy then it actually is. It's just a plain jane hotel, no life or style to it, and the rooms are just meh. I wouldn't stay here again."

"We had a great stay. The staff was very friendly. It's a great place to stay if you are just looking for a place to rest. We stayed away from the pool area, it was pretty crowded and noisy around there all the time. Our room was in the La Jolla building, away from the main building. We ordered room service, and it was delicious. We stayed there for six nights. Only downer is having to pay for parking each day. I think any surrounding hotels do that. It would probably be better just to roll the parking cost into the room rates (just a suggestion). Everything is very close by the hotel, so we were able to visit the beaches, Balboa Park, Sea World, and the Zoo without having to travel more than a few miles. All in all, we would stay there again, but definitely away from the pool area."

"I was very disappointed in this hotel and feel they did not live up to what their website states at all. The rooms are extremely small, the bathrooms were hideous, not even a dresser in the room and the noise level was high throughout our stay. they also had a huge pool party (Sunday afternoon) and were way over their maximum amount of people allowed and no lifeguards on duty. I had our granddaughters with us and this was completely inappropriate setting for them, so they were disappointed that on our free day they did not get to enjoy the pool."

"we stayed 5 nights with kids and enjoyed our stay, we got a good discount, the room was very clean . Unfortunately, when I added a 6th night the price was a little bit high $178.00, so you have to negociate before. the parking is too expensive $12.00/day, had to pay wii.fi !!!!!!!. The location is very good and quiet. The staff very nice. We will return again there when next time in San Diego. I traveled a lot and for the price this Hotel 'Thumb up'."

"The Handlery Hotel in San Diego was booked for the last 2 nights of our tour of the pacific coast of the USA. When we arrived we were quickly checked in with the only addition to our pre-paid booking being the overnight parking charge of $12/day. Our room was at ground level overlooking the main swimming pool area which operated from 9am to 10pm, and these times were strictly enforced. The pool area was beautifully clean with an adequate number of loungers & towels, tables and its own food & drinks bar, with servers. Our room was clean and adequate with the usual facilities: air conditioning, TV, radio/alarm, tea & coffee, fridge, hairdryer etc, and a free daily newspaper. The hotel ran a free shuttle bus (at certain times of day) to various locations ie: Old Town which we visited. The driver had plenty of time to talk to us about other travel options, trolley buses etc and places to visit, and was like all the staff who were friendly & helpful. The bar area in the hotel served generous & resonably priced bar snacks along with a large variety of drinks, cocktails etc, We did not use the hotel restaurant during our stay so could not comment on this.
The only problem we encountered was another guest in an adjacent room who wanted to talk to his colleague on his balcony at 6am as though it was the middle of the day. Once we reported this to the front desk they contacted this person and we never had another problem. All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our stay & would return there again if we should be lucky enough to revisit San Diego."

"We stayed there for 5 nights. Both my husband and I were highly impressed with the hotel considering how much we paid (we got a sweet 40% discount). The room and the rest of the interior were newly renovated, clean and very comfortable. The stuff was incredible, all our requests were completed in a blink of an eye. The surrounding area is also very pleasant - they are next to a golf course. One morning we decided to spend a couple of hours at the pool but ended up spending there whole day - the water was great (heated and I couldn't feel the chlorine at all and first thought it was a salt water), the snacks and drinks were brought by the stuff from the pool bar to our chairs (two thumbs up for the marinated stake salad!) and there was a live band playing nice music in the afternoon, so felt we are in a tropical resort :-) They also have kobi (or cobi?) beef burgers on Monday evenings for only $5.00 but we had to miss it due to our Zoo trip. They also have free shuttles to the Seawold, Zoo and Old Town which is very helpful. We'll sure stay there again when next time in San Diego.
P.S. I don't know why people write that the rooms are small and they expect queen beds. The ads state that the beds are double, no mentioning queens at all. And the room size is pretty much standard compare to other hotels. We've been to one hotel prior to this one and for the similar price we got nothing compare to this one, honestly. The other hotel was horrible, just don't want to go about all the details but the point is that this hotel is very very decent especially for the promotional price that they give it out now. If someone expects a 5-star resort, they should pay a 5-star price."

"The hotel in general is old and not well-kept. The lobby is dirty and carpeting needs to be changed throughout the entire facility. The rooms have a smell and the bathrooms are too tiny. There were no towels when we came and had to request for it. They gave us 2 towels. I requested for more since we have 4 in our group. Bathroom floor rug was also not given so I had to request for that too. There is a small refrigerator though in the room. Be aware that daily maid service is for a FEE.
Our family used the fitness room and it is too dated. The a/c in the room was not working but was too afraid to turn on the wall mounted fan since it was all covered with dust. Seems like it was ages ago since it was cleaned. The fitness equipment were too dirty that we decided to leave.There is no elevator so we had to carry our suitcases up to the second floor. The hotel might be good for business travelers who are not that that picky. But I strongly suggest NOT to book this hotel if you are traveling with families especially with kids. The staff was friendly though and didn't charge us with daily parking fee. We saved $24! Yet, we will never stay at this hotel again."

"Well, can I start by saying/..I wasn't very happy with the room, very small. Nothing like the picture.
The picture on the website shows a balcony with every room listed. I thought I was getting queen beds, but I really don't remember. We had double. Housekeeping came knocking on our door at 9 am to clean and we were in the
middle of getting ready...made sure to put do not disturb sign out every night before going to bed so we didn't get bothered early morning.
A/C wasn't sufficient, for the room. Even if you tried to get it cooler the fan would kick in, stuffy at best. Especially after showers, no fan in the bathroom. The hallway was cooler!
The room was warm and couldn't sleep very well. Bathroom was very small and cramped. Terrible shower head. Didn't have enough room for my toiletries, first time ever at a hotel.
The refrigerator didn't work well either. Thank goodness we took a small cooler.
No access to internet without having to pay $9.95 a day. Had to pay $50.00 a day deposit for each day stayed (we did get it back). Parking $12.00 a day.
Which I didn't see posted on the website, unless I missed it.
They had a shuttle bus to SeaWorld, but last pick up was 5:00 pm. Which we didn't use. But what's the point, parking at Seaworld is $14 for the day.
The best part of the hotel, was the pool and freeway access.
But will never stay there again.

"The hotel over all is decent, we stayed seven nights my husband and daughter. The rooms are small so if you have more than one child it may not work for you as your choices are two doubles or a single king. The bathroom is small but very clean just not any room for your toiletries. The pool is decent and they have live music on Wednesday with Movie night for the kids on Friday and Saturday, however it can be busy because the let the locals in for cost of parking. Even though parking is advertised at an additional cost we were given free due to length of stay. It is located within minutes to Sea World, Zoo, Mall, Dowtown and a short drive to Safari Park. The rooms are noisy so if you are a light sleeper, etc. I wouldnt recommend you really can hear everything. Rooms have been updated but you can tell it is a older hotel. And there is no elevator so if you are on the second floor you will need to lug your luggage upstairs."

"The Hotel was OK, expected more for the money I paid. When I checked in, reserved 2 rooms which I requested they be adjoining, Hotel said they never got the request. One evening I attempted to gain entry into room, could not access key card for 30 minutes. Called front desk, sent someone out 15 minutes later, had to replace the electronic key acces unit. Air conditioning worked well. Called front desk to see if they could recommend a pizza delivery restaurant, they said yes and also stated they had coupons. They said they would send someone right over with menus and coupons. Called twice to follow up, they never showed up and waited over an hour. They have a shuttle service to the local attractions (ie. Sea World). They shuttle at 9:30 am with a pick up at 4:30pm or a 10:00am shutlle with a pick up at 5:00pm. Do not use the shuttle, this will not give you enough time to enjoy the park attractions and you will only be able to see a few. I would not recommend this hotel, nor will I ever stay there again."

"My wife, our young granddaughter, and I stayed two nights at the Handlery in a room with two full beds. The room was clean, the staff was friendly and helpful, and if you need a car, they have an Enterprise Rent-A-Car located right in the lobby. Transportation to and from the zoo and Sea World was free. We have paid for shuttle service elsewhere, so this was a nice freebie. Our room was a little noisy, as it is adjacent to the parking lot and a freeway runs right by the hotel. The walls are thin as well, so we could always hear anyone coming down the hallway as well as the traffic noise and voices in the parking lot. If we weren't so exhausted, the noise might have been an issue. My guess is that they discounted our room because it was near the traffic, and I would recommend that they disclose this fact in the future. In spite of the drawbacks, our room was well worth the money."

"Did not get the room I had requested unless I pay 20 dollars more a night. The resort was smaller then expected. Food was great for the price and waiter was very good. Staff was very helpful and friendly. The bath room was a little smaller than I use of having at a resort."

"Front desk staff was great always willing to help. The cleanliness of the room we had was not up to my standards there were dust bunnies under the nightstands also a cap from a pop beside the bed, bathroom floor still had hair on it. Webhad requested an allergy free room. The stairwells had big cobwebs in the corners, the walls in the restaurant had food splatter on them when sitting in the booths. The pool and hot tub were clean. The shuttle was great the guys were very helpful suggesting restaurants or tips on public transit. The menu for the restaurant didn't offer up much choice."

"Great value for the Holiday Bowl special. Rooms were clean and attractive/updated). Nice breakfast included. Shuttle to the trolley (which is also within walking distance). No complaints (except perhaps the rather dim bathroom lighting). Other reviews say the structure looks dated, but I thought the retro vibe was nice. Makes a change from the cookie cutter 'modern style' hotels. I would return."

"This was an AMAZING hotel with the best service I have had anywhere. Front desk was exceptional and the bartender was great too. Everything at this hotel was immaculate and I felt like I was not getting ripped off. Great location in Hotel Circle and you don't have to drive far to get where you are going. I will stay here again it was great."

"We stayed 2 nights 10th and 11th of september. We had a great time! The staff is AWESOME! The shuttle driver, I believe his name is Jeff, was great. He had recomended a couple eateries, and gave us discount cards for some. He also set up a town car for our early morning departure. It went off without a hitch. During our stay we meet guest from all over the world! So fun to talk with others who are so different from youself. Lastly the city of san diego has so much to offer for all different tastes. Can't wait to go back!"
