We stayed here for a family vacation September 12th-16th. We stayed here twice last summer and absolutely loved it, so of course, we had to stay here again! We booked a junior suite, I believe, which worked great for us and our two young children. We stayed here for a family vacation September 12th-16th. We stayed here twice last summer and absolutely loved it, so of course, we had to stay here again! We booked a junior suite, I believe, which worked great for us and our two young children. Last year, we stayed in room 440 in the Casa del Mar building, which worked wonderfully, as you can park right outside for easy loading/unloading, and the boats are a few steps away. I requested this room again while making my reservation, and the reservationist was kind enough to give us a repeat guest discount.
Upon check-in, I was a bit disappointed, as room 440 was not available during our stay, and we were instead checked into 541 (same building, but on 2nd floor). I know they can't guarantee rooms, but we were at least hoping for something ground floor and in the same location. We went to the room, and although it was the same type of suite, and had a nice view overlooking Point Loma and the bay, it just wasn't going to work. We were traveling with our 2 year old and 2 month old, and had a LOT of stuff. My husband was exhausted after unloading everything from the car and going up and down the stairs several times (there's no elevator in this building). But what really sealed it for my husband was that he was nervous watching me holding our two month old and trying to walk down the stairs every time we left.
Since we were there for several days, he went to the front desk that night and asked if anything could be done. Working with a front desk agent and the front desk manager, they were able to move us to room 440 the next day!!! They moved our luggage for us while we were out during the day, and we picked up our keys when we came back to the hotel. It was seamless, and we had our favorite room!! What a difference!!! So much easier being ground floor with the car right there!
The room has a separate bedroom with a king-sized bed, a bathroom with toilet and shower/tub separated with a door from the sink area (with beautiful tile work I might add!). There is also a living area (I believe there is a pull-out sofa), and a dining area and kitchenette. The kitchenette is wonderful when traveling as a family. They supply so much! There is a blender, toaster, microwave, mini fridge, dual sink with drying rack, paper towels, cabinets AND utensils and plates/glasses! However, the mini fridge in the room needs replaced or fixed. It simply does not get cold enough. And actually, I remember that from last year. Unfortunately, we had milk and other food spoil due to it not getting cold enough. I know it's an issue with this fridge because the night we were in 541, that fridge was fine. They did compensate us by removing the parking charge when we checked out, which was very nice!
Our stay was great. This is the PERFECT hotel for our needs. Right across the street is a nice small beach with tiny waves that is perfect for kids. There's a small pier, and also a playground with swings and climbing equipment and slides. Right next to the hotel is a lovely walking path right along the harbor. Simply beautiful.
I want to praise a special member of the staff that made our stay even more special. One day, as we were getting ready to leave the room and go to the beach, my husband was telling our two-year-old to pick up her toys. Being two, she was resistant to this idea. As one of the silly child psychology things you do as a parent, my husband said she better pick up her toys so the maid doesn't throw them away! Our daughter got an instant look of worry on her face (lol) and picked up her toys quickly. After that, she mentioned the maid in a state of worry a few times throughout the day. Upon returning to the hotel later that day, our room had been cleaned nicely as usual, and we noticed that the maid had made our daughter's bed very nicely (we had a small air mattress on the ground with a sleeping bag, pillow and her favorite blankie that we were using for her to sleep on). She had made the sleeping bag nicely, folded her blankie, and "tucked in" her two favorite baby dolls. It was very sweet. We showed our daughter, she smiled and said "the maid is a nice person!". So although she had no idea of my daughter's fear and worry of her earlier in the day, our housekeeper, Concepcion Estrada, made our daughter's experience special and totally changed her mind about her worries. It's charming people like Concepcion that really can put that extra touch and smile on someone's day. Thank you so much for making our daughter's day special!
