Wonderful location, walking distance from the aquarium, fisherman's wharf, cannery row. Great staff, yummy free cookies. All you need is right there. They are updating the Convention Center, which is next door, as a result, the entrance is under construction but not a problem with parking. Enjoy.

We weren't expecting much but OMG this hotel was amazing. Great location, great staff, great food. Our room was lovely, huge walk in shower and a sea view. We stayed in America for 2 weeks and travelled everywhere from San Francisco to San Diego, this hotel was by far the best one we stayed in. Thank you Portola!

This is a nice hotel and all, but not any nicer than another hotel. Understand you are paying for location. Only for location. Everything else is extra. Parking $20/day in their garage. No breakfast. Bottled water $4 each. No tub (not great for bathing a baby!) WIFI $10+/day. NO FREE WIFI IF YOU BOOK THROUGH TRAVELOCITY/EXPEDIA/Etc! (And for some reason we couldn't use our data in the room. Make sure you take note of what time happy hour starts because the drinks are expensive. Try the breakfast at Jack restaurant they make your omelet to order right in front of you and it is wonderful!

The Portola Hotel is well situated in the historic area of Monterey a short distance from Fishermans Wharf. The hotel, is large, comfortable and is currently being refurbished which did not affect us significantly. Our room was very comfortable, well decorated and clean and came with a balcony with chairs. It was perfect for our needs with one exception - the wi-fi. There was wifi coverage in the room but the cost was exorbitant (See pic). In this day and age this is ridiculous. The reason... Read more

From dropping car off to valet, checking in with ease, to very nice room, this is a great upscale lodge in Monterey. It is not the Four Seasons but very nice for $200 bucks a night. Staff great, service great, room very clean and great location to walk right to old fishermans wharf. How anyone would complain just tells me they whine about anything they can. If you want a nice clean stay in a great location, can't be beat!

We went to Monterey for my husband's birthday and couldn't ask for better service and location. We arrived three hours later than expected. Upon check in, we were told they no longer had the king room we booked online. Would we accept an upgrade to a suite? Yes, we would. Staff was friendly and accommodating. The suite (more of a junior suite or studio suite for other hotels; a bedroom area and living area, but no separation) has been refreshed. The hallways were a bit tired, but since we didn... I just returned from a 2 night stay at the Portola Hotel. I was pretty unimpressed. When the room rate is taken into account, i was pretty disappointed. The property is clearly old and in need of refurbishing. I specifically chose this property because i had planned to hang out at the pool all day with friends who were also visiting Monterey. Only, the pool doesn't even come close to what the photos would indicate. It's tiny and kinda sad. we ended up spending our time off property, so th... Read more

Used to live in Monterey, so familiar with this location. It is easily located in the center of town, walking distance to fisherman's wharf and has easy in/out access. They are currently doing a major overhaul (bathrooms have been recently refreshed) of the convention center next door as well as the entrance plaza, so a lot of construction was going on. But a little research ahead of time, very easy to get in and out. Their check in is a little lounge area in the parking garage, so they are maki... Read more

In a few words: amicable, good location, good amenities, pool is nice (but would be nicer if it wasn't accessed right next to a parking garage) Rooms are lovely, has a somewhat luxurious feel to it - huge showers, great beds, good a/c, fridge, wifi, everything you'd expect. The valet parking was a joke, the valets were next to useless, weren't overly friendly and always expected big tips for doing nothing. Overall - great, recommended stay.

This would be a 5 star review but they managed to muck up both check-in and check-out. The receptionist did not activate the room keys at check-in. The staff were fine and the room was big, bed fine etc (though I was on the side of the hotel that overlooked the road and it was quite noisy). This hotel is under major construction until 2017. With that said, we were not inconvenienced since we had knowledge of the construction before we went there. We did not have knowledge that self-parking was $19.00 per day, nor were we aware that reserving a 2 bedroom unit would not guarantee that we would get 2 beds. We were told during check in that we would have a king and a pull out couch, even though our room was not ready an hour past the 4:00PM check in time. We waited another half hour fo... Read more

The lobby is fantastic, with natural light, lots of places to sit and relax, so comfortable! JACK'S is the best restaurant in Monterey. Insanely fresh local food, perfectly prepared. Room itself was lovely completely let down by poor quality balcony doors which need double glazing to keep out the night long noise of cars and sirens outside. This was one of more expensive hotels on our road trip and sleep quality the worst. Guest relations not interested. Did not want to know. Would not recommend.

The hotel is a big aged. I checked in to a friendly staff and a warm cookie. Then porceeded to my room only to be stuck in an elevator for 20 minutes with the alarm sounding. The manager was very kind in the end and comp'ed me a free night stay. The room was very comfortable, but there was no AC-only a fan. The bed was quite comfortable, and the bathroom/shower were great. The hotel is closely located to many stores and restaurants. had a nice stay despite the not fun start at the hotel.

My 7-year-old son and I got away for a few nights for Thanksgiving while my husband was traveling. We really like the Portola Hotel location really close to fisherman's wharf. Be warned, it is currently undergoing a major renovations so it is not as nice right now. However, the construction didn't bother us or interfere with our stay. We got a nice room away from the highway. They have a fun kids program where they can look for clues on a treasure map. If kids find all the answers to the quest... Read more

The Portola is a incredible hotel as it is located right in the heart of Monterey next to everything in terms of downtown. We were able to enjoy the hotel bar, the wharf, and local stores/restaurants all within a short walk. Additionally, for anyone visiting Monterey for the first time, I highly recommend the 17 mile drive which starts just a few miles from the hotel. This was an incredible view of the coast and something you don't want to miss!

Unfortunately the hotel Portola was under renovation when we stayed there but it was the conference center so it was no so annoying. The front desk has been moved so it was a little bit less fancy than expected but we got amazing home made cookies when we checked-in. We asked a king bed room but they were sold out both nights so we ended up with a double queen beds room. The style is pretty classic but nice. The room was clean and spacious. I really liked the bathroom, pretty convenient and the... Read more

The Portola was attractively priced, which is why I initially chose it. It's in a very central location and you can walk to many attractions from the hotel. The rooms were very nice. The only negative was the "deck" was in an interior space within the structure. It's quite a large hotel and has all of the amenities you'd want or walk out the door to many great restaurants!

Stayed here for a conference in November and the location was fantastic. I parked my car and walked everywhere. The wharf is a few steps away as well as the ped/bike trail that goes for miles; one could walk to cannery row and the aquarium. There was a Starbucks across the street and a crepe place right next to the parking for the hotel. Yes, there was construction going on in the hotel, but I was warned about it in advance, so I knew to expect it. The bed was comfy with good linens and the r... Read more
