As far as Residence Inns go, this is not one of the better ones. The outside of the hotel needs sprucing up and looks like an eyesore in the midst of chic La Jolla. The room was clean but very musty and had a strong carpet cleaner smell. Hotel toiletries were very bad- the usual motel-type Litchfield Prison issue shampoo, conditioner and soaps. Staff was professional and courteous.

We chose this hotel because it was close to our grandkids, and dog-friendly. We were a little concerned about staying on a weekend, and so close to UCSD, because normally this would be a noisy hotel stay. We were delighted to have had a peaceful 2 night stay, with parking close by, and plenty of areas to walk our small dog. Both mornings the breakfast room was a complete zoo (people-wise, that is) so we were grateful to be able to take food from the buffet and retreat to the quiet of our room... Read more

We have 5 in the family- that in it's self has made travel hard. Even more so now the kids have grown and are all over 6 feet tall. To be able to find a room for us all is hard. This Residence Inn had one big enough! We had a great two story room that was comfortable, and very well located. We found it easy to get to all the San Diego attractions (15 minutes by highway), the La Jolla beach as well as shopping. There was a breakfast that was included, that was nice. It was very busy as I bel... Read more

I stayed three nights while attending a nearby conference. This was my fourth stay ay this hotel in the last five years. The room was clean, comfortable and quiet. It had all of the amenities of a Residence Inn, including free breakfast. Parking is a minor issue. There is a $15 per night charge, which is tolerable. However, there are not a lot of parking spaces and some are hard to maneuver into. You can walk to a shopping center that has a Whole Foods. I bought two meals at Whole Foods that wer... Read more

We've stayed many times at this hotel over the past 16 years as our son attended college and now has a family in San Diego. The hotel is located close to shopping and a variety of restaurants (favorites are Humphreys for special dining and Rubios for quick meals). The updated rooms are very comfortable, the breakfast always well presented and the entire Marriott staff excellent.

I stayed here with family for the Memorial Day weekend. The journey while being at this hotel began after check in. I was given room keys and a room number. I walked up the stairs to my penthouse suite, entered the key, opened the door, to find a man and lady cuddling on the sofa!!! They screamed, I screamed, and I quickly closed the door. I returned the keys and the excuse given was that "those visitors were accidentally not checked in." That made me feel real uneasy from the beginning. Wh... Read more

We stay here every year. Staff is great and helpful. It is very close to the beach. The breakfast is great. Rooms are comfy. Also I don't feel that i'm not trapped in a hotel complex. Where it takes forever to get to the room or pool. Having a mini kitchen is great. Also the evening reception hour is fun. The staff was great and courteous with our kids. My kids love swimming and the pools were close by our room. What I liked about this hotel it is very reasonably priced compared to other ... Read more

This establishment is close to UCSD, the Birch Aquarium, and La Jolla Cove. There are grocery stores (Ralph's, Whole Foods) as well as restaurants just around the block which is very convenient. We stayed in the family loft suite, 2 queens downstairs and a queen upstairs. It has a full kitchen. The room was a little dated but clean which was more important. Our mattress was a bit saggy. When I arrived at the check-in desk on June 12, my assigned room was in the right area of the complex and on the second floor, as requested. However, it overlooked an entrance road and I was concerned it would be noisy since I'm an early-to-bed and early-to-rise person. It took 5 minutes to find a room in the same area of the complex, on the second floor, facing away from the parking lot (toward a hillside), and available for the full 6 days of my stay. I visited San Diego around the new year time in December for a family vacation. We chose the hotel because we were looking for a 'home-away-from-home' kind of place. The hotel is well-located away from the hustle bustle of San Diego in a quiet place near the University of California, San Diego and we felt right in place from the moment we arrived. La Jolla Shores are not too far and so is Mount Soledad. We booked a 2-bedroom condo since we like to stay together as a family (4 adults and one kid... Read more

I stayed here because my son had orientation at UCSD. The location is great with the university only a mile away. We stayed for 5 nights and I really enjoyed my stay. Our room was very quiet, the beds are very firm, and there's a lot of counter space in the bathroom which is separated from the shower (a big plus for me). The breakfast is very good with scrambled eggs, a meat (sausage or ham), a potato dish, make your own waffles, cereal, breads, and one morning they had breakfast burrito's. ... Read more

Pros are lots of space and about a 10-15 minute drive to beach. Also a short drive or maybe even a 15 minute walk to a shopping area to get groceries. Cons for me is I didn't like that I had to pay to park at a place that owns its own parking. Breakfast in the morning was very large and had plenty of food. But quite packed I couldn't find a place to sit even though they have a lot of seating available. I ended up just taking the food back to my room. If you are on a budget (free breakfast, full ... Such a bummer! Hubby and I traveled to La Jolla for a long weekend with our 2 year old son. We loved the setup of our "penthouse suite" for our family so that our son could have his own space to sleep and we wouldn't bother him if we stayed up late watching TV. However, the hotel (and our room) was extremely dumpy and outdated. The free breakfast buffet was horrible (and I'm typically not picky as I'm hustling to get my son fed first thing in the morning). Staff was very helpful and responsive to all requests. Breadkfasts were crowded, but varied and always good. WiFi was limited, but always available. Small pool for the number of rooms, but adequate. We stayed there for six nights. Hotel has a very convenience shuttle service to downtown and other places within 5 mile radius Monday through Friday. Breakfast is well spread. But since we are vegetarian there are less choices. Otherwise it was good. On some weekdays they serve complimentary wine, beer and soft drinks/ coffee etc with snacks and salads.

Overall it was a decent hotel. A/C did not work well, little airflow despite complaining to the front desk about it. I can only assume they tried to fix it as there was not a note left that maintenance was in our room. Barking dogs outside our room each morning limited the amount of sleep we got, so be aware that dogs are allowed at the property

My wife's beloved toy cat, Doug, got tangled in the sheets and taken to the laundry. Darren, a very hard working team member, went to the laundry at the end of the day and shook out all the sheets and towels collected during the day until he found Doug. When I thanked Darren he just said "Its what I do!" My wife was soooo happy. Doug is so important to her. She slept well and has been smiling ever since. Thank you, Darren!

This hotel worked very well for my family of 3 on a soccer tournament weekend. The parking was tight, but we intentionally brought our smallest car and always managed to find a spot. The food at breakfast was great, the crazy crowds not as much, though we probably could have avoided them by getting up earlier. I used the laundry facility, which was clean, and we always appreciate having a fridge in the room. Very conveniently located to everywhere we wanted to go, as well as to the northern area... As part of a 10-Day West Coast trip, we were looking for room for our family of 4 to spread out. The Family Suite met our needs. This is actually a hotel from the Marriot company, and it's not as amazing as you think it would be. We stayed in a little furnished 2 floor house, and the beds were really comfortable, but the TV only has Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon for kids to watch, and usually, on Nickelodeon, it's nearly always Full House, and on Cartoon Network, it's nearly always Family Guy. The breakfast was also very lousy. I did not like this hotel.

The hotel is very nice, you feel like you are renting a small house, you can enjoy a bbq or roasted marshmallows, a pool and jacuzzi's around the area. I really wanted to give a four star to this and the location is worth of a four star just based on the convenience and ease of getting to the amazing array of things to do in the area. As the name suggests , this is a nice property located close to the La Jolla downtown area. I opted for a 1 bedroomed unit, complete with a decent sized and well equipped kitchen, having a fridge, microwave oven, gas oven, 4-burner stove and a dish washer. The breakfast was decent , but did tend to get a little boring after a few days. The hotel is pet friendly and car parking is on a chargeable basis. It provided a complimentary shuttle within a 5 mile radius, on the hour.

I guess my expectation for quality service is a little higher than some other guests. We have stayed at other hotels in the La Jolla area so I cannot give a rating based on location. Additionally, these hotels provided much better customer service.
