We decided to get away last minute for our anniversary and stumbled upon Cardiff by the sea. I used to camp at San Elijo across the street as a kid and we were familiar with the neighborhood. We were surprised at how homey and adorable this place is! We had an ocean view and cozy fire place in our room. Perfect. The fire pit, garden, and hot tub on the roof. Awesome! Everywhere we looked we saw these quaint little beautiful touches you just don't get at a huge hotel. Fun restaurants basically at... Read more

Great view from the terrace & fire pit!!! Staff is wonderful! Quirky hotel with themed inspired rooms. Great location, you can walk to the beach and also a great pizza restaurant nearby. We'll be back, for a 3rd time!

The location of this hotel and its roof top deck are reasons enough that we'd stay here again. We enjoyed watching some magnificent sunsets each evening from the deck. The lodge's staff was quite friendly and helpful. On the downside, the carpeting in our room was stained and worn. As other reviewers have commented, the place does need some updating.

Location was fantastic. I could walk to go surf at a bunch of different spots all within a half mile or less of the Lodge. Staff was friendly and accommodating. Don't let a single comment about the room décor deter you from this place. The bed was very nice and the room was immaculate. Sleep in the room and get outside!! Also too there was no nickel and diming with this establishment, no parking fees, not pay/day for wifi. Excellent amenities. Best place we stayed at on our tour of Southern Cal... Read more

I had a gift certificate from the prior owners of the lodge. I called ahead to check if they would accept it and they said yes. I was going there with my boyfriend and he couldn't make it because his sister-in-law unexpectedly passed away. He told me to go without him so I took my mom. As it was the last minute I forgot the gift certificate at home. I charged the room on my credit card so the hotel personnel wouldn't have any hassles and mailed them the gift certificate the next day when I go... Read more

From the photos on their website, this looks like a charming place to stay. Unfortunately, we checked out about 30 minutes after checking in. After being escorted to our room (with no help carrying our bags), I backed out of the room without entering it due to the overwhelming smell of chemical cleaners. It was a serious turnoff. The staff person offered to "spray it with something to take away the smell" which I declined. I pointed out that the place has a serious mold problem and was told "tha... Read more

First of all Cardiff by the Sea is a small beach town. The lodge is perfect for a place like this. It's an older place and shows some wear but it is very clean and comfortable. The front desk was very helpful and accommodating and most of all pleasant. It's a short walk to the beach across Pacific Coast Hwy. Not all rooms have an ocean view but you can go up to the rooftop deck for a great view of the ocean. There is also a fire pit and a hot tub on the roof. My husband and I had a most enjoyabl... Stylish and clean room, very close to the beach and to a number of bars/diners. There is a free parking available - in front of the building on within an enclosed parking area. The terrace is also amazing. Staff is friendly. Opportunity for improvement on the breakfast, that doesn't provide many options.

This is such a wonderful place: great location, roof-top patio that looks out on the glorious Pacific, quirky rooms. However, we did not get the room we reserved! We had gone to check out the place earlier and reserved French Country; they stuck us in Santa Fe, which is behind the office and not nearly so nice. Luckily not one of the bad smelling rooms, as mentioned by Rannynm. Unfortunately we had left the paperwork at home, so I could not verify this until after the experience, nor could ... Read more

We wanted to stay near the Eli Howard surf school in San Elijo State Campground. Lodging options are very limited in the area so we chose to stay here. The staff is very friendly and work hard to make your stay enjoyable, but the problem is there just isn't much to work with here. Not all rooms have sofa beds. Figured that out at check-in despite asking when I made the reservation about this. So make sure you have the space you need. Our room (French Garden) was musty smelling and lacked the aes... Love this hotel. Not our first stay. The rooms are all different, like a bed & breakfast. Continental breakfast is included. Roof top deck, spa, and fire pit are fantastic. We sat up there and had a cocktail in the evenings and coffee in the mornings. Staff was very friendly and helpful. We stayed this time in the Lattice room and our electricity went out. Dawn showed us where the breakers are and we were back up and running. Very convenient location. We were there for Del Mar races this time, a... Read more

This was my first visit to Cardiff and it was an extremely pleasant stay. Cardiff By the Sea Lodge is not a fancy glitzy place, it is a cozy charming cottage with an incredible view, easy access to the beach, and a very friendly staff. Every room has a name and a personality. I stayed in the Captain's quarters which had an amazing view and adequate spacing. The room was very clean and smelled great. Each day returning to a fresh clean and restored room! The rooftop is a spacious patio with Incr... Read more

had a wedding to go to in nearby San Marcos. wanted to stay somewhere close to the beach. this was a great find: a very cozy, laid-back inn in a cool beach community. this is more of a "bed & breakfast" than a "hotel" lacks some amenities like a pool (who needs a pool when you got the beach?) but it makes up for it in charm and location. the rooms are all different. I stayed in the Victorian which was great. the inn has an open breezy feel (the middle is hollow) and the rooftop is ... Read more

Super location! Rooms are clean and roomy, not fancy but perfect for a little beach town. 2 block off the water, roof top with plenty of seating, spa & fire pit! Ocean view for miles!!! Great breakfast burritos around the corner, eating breakfast and drinking coffee on the roof is addicting. Only 17 rooms here, feels like you are staying at home.

Lodge has great location overlooking the ocean. Each room theme is unique, some decorated better than others. We had the Hawaiian room which was nice for us considering we were going to a Jimmy Buffett concert. Some seemed a little gaudy. Rooftop jacuzzi and fire pit were nice. Good view for morning coffee and/or nice setting for roasting marshmallows (supplied by the lodge) at night. Staff was very nice and provided lots of local tips. Parking was included but spots were a little too sma... Read more

Very quirky and extremely friendly. Rooms are individually named (we stayed in the Mediterranean). It has a roof top terrace where you can relax and enjoy the sunshine, or chill out in the hot tub. A firepit is lit after sun down. The terrace is a fantastic view point to watch the sun go down, but don't blink, its gone in seconds. Breakfast (continental) is included in a very reasonable price. The beach is a 5 minute walk and has a lifeguard. There are plenty of shops for food. The deli... Read more

check in was easy. the southwest room has windows facing the ocean. this is a handmade boutique hotel with a fantastic roof garden to watch the sunset. yes, we heard the train go by with the loud whistles . across the street is the zumbar coffee shop with great coffee in the morning. easy to walk across the street and swim in the ocean without have to pay or look for a parking place.

Ill make this short and sweet as this place is not worth my time. Heard this place was cool with its themed rooms and location by the ocean. this is a small inn with maybe 15 rooms that are all themed in some fashion. i was in the Mediterranean room # 105 in the back that looked out over the back parking lot. first off parking is below the building but if it fills up you need to park in the lot adjacent to the inn. check in was quick and easy it is an old hotel so there is no electronic key, you... We've came here to spend a night, but decided to stay for two. It's amazing place, very cozy and comfy. The beach is so close, we even get an ocean view number. On the top of the building there is a nice. Fire place to spend cold evenings. Decently check this place out.

Great location by the beach, restaurants and bars. Clean, bright rooms. Friendly and helpful staff. Roof top patio with firepit. However, the rooms were old. And yes, I knew that going there, but I just wanted to mention it for others. Even though the rooms were old, it was still a nice stay. It will be much better after renovations!
