Very good location in 5 points and close to dining options. The hotel is a bit older, and well kept. We stayed in a double suite and yes, the beds are actual double and not queen--so a bit tight. However, the suite was a very good size and spacious with separate small living room and kitchenette (fridge and sink). The offered breakfast in morning. We arrived at check in time and had to wait about 20 minutes to get room as they were very busy and fully booked. The receptionist seemed a bit overwh... Read more

Good location, can walk to dozens of restaurants. We enjoyed exploring Five Points. It seems there is a beautiful church on every street (walk east of the plaza). Lots of college students, with a bit of youthful energy. The hotel has been renovated, but the quality of the renovation was disappointing. Still, we had a large and comfortable room, and we had a very good breakfast with both hot and cold items. Free Wi-Fi. If you're on a budget, you don't have to valet. There's an inexpensive... We had an excellent stay at the Hyland. Hotel is VERY quiet, and centrally located; one of the reasons we chose it was because it was only a few blocks from the venue we were attending. Staff were pleasant and helpful. Parking garage is located immediately behind the hotel; be aware that you incur new charges every time your car exits and re-enters. We received an upgrade to a suite instead of the room we'd booked, which was a nice touch. Its an older hotel, and perhaps the thicker walls help to... Read more

Neat Hotel, it is an older buildings that has been updated a few times since the 1920s. Hotel had a retro feel and seemed to be kept up pretty good. Hotel was clean. Breakfast was decent. Location is great, lots of good restaurants and shops in the area. Parking garage out back was confusing to get to with the one way streets but we figured it out easily and parked for 4 dollars a day. We were on the second floor facing the street, little loud, but we were able to sleep and so was our infan... Read more

I almost gave this place 5 stars. It almost deserves it. The location is great, right on 5 points with plenty of restaurants and bars within a couple of blocks. We got a corner suite for not much more than a regular room, and it had great views, was well equipped and tastefully furnished. Happy overall but had to dock a star because the gym was pretty much an afterthought with equipment that didn't work or was of very poor quality. Also, the room had some details that were a little worn if you l... Read more

When you walk into your room and the thermostat is on hi and set on 50 degrees and the room is more humid than outdoors, that is a red flag. And instead of giving you another room, they give you a box fan to move the rancid air around. It is 3:30 in the morning, my sheets feel damp, my hair damp, my skin damp...this is gross. But then again having gone to other rooms to visit other members of our party I am noticing that all the rooms feel this way. Oh and be sure to wear your flip flops ... Read more

We recently stayed at the hotel, which was nice but definitely needed updating. One of the blinds in our room wouldn't open, there was visible wear on the furniture and overall the room was dark. The staff was very nice and the hotel is conveniently located to downtown restaurants and nightlife.

I can't express how much we enjoyed this hotel it is in a great location and the staff is very helpful. We spent 2 nights here and when we arrived at the hotel we asked the valet if we would be able to get our car at 4:30 in the morning because we had to be at the hospital. He was so very kind he said he would bring our car to the front at midnight when he got off and it would be ready for us. When we came down in the morning it was sitting right where he promised it would be. The room was t... Read more

Upon arrival, the valet attendant showed us inside. He was extremely nice and helpful, assuring us our car would be safe and sound. The desk clerk was, well, just a clerk. He didn't seem too interested in our arrival except to get us to sign in so he could get back to doing what ever he was doing. We checked in around 7:00pm or so. The room was way beyond our expectations! It was a two room suite with two T.V.s, and a nice area with a coffee maker and microwave. The bed was a king and com... Read more

Upon arriving we were greeted by the valet who opened the car door for us and helped with the luggage. We had a speedy friendly check in at the desk and the desk clerk informed us of all of the transportation to and from the UAB hospital. Our room was so large and comfortable and even had a small bar with a sink! They deliver ice to your room here! What a treat. We were treated like family and felt very safe here at this hotel. We found some great restaurant close by to walk to and the food was ... Read more

We were so disappointed with the hotel after reading others' reviews. We took the King Size suite. On the plus size, it was incredibly spacious. On the down side, our first room was 503. It is summer so we had the air conditioner on. It ran non-stop and doesn't cycle on and off. And the non-adjustable vent is directly over the bed and blowing down relentlessly directly on us. It was miserable and we couldn't sleep. Also, this room is right on the street and there was a lot of noise. I h... Read more

The hotel was a great location. The lady at the front desk was awesome. lost my reservation and they were full when I arrived. The lady working the front found me a room of someone who was not going to make it and got me an amazing rate as well. The room was clean and while it was an older hotel it was a cute boutique feel.

We loved our stay at Hotel Highland. The hotel is centrally located to walk to some of the best restaurants in Birmingham. Our room was very spacious with a separate living area, the bathroom also had a lot of room and a nice shower with a lot of water pressure. Our room was very quite with dark curtains for the people that would like to sleep late. Our bed was very comfortable with nice sheets and the bedding was nice. We parked in parking garage located behind the hotel. I would definitely sta... Read more

Room was very clean, staff was nice and helpful, hotel was central to a lot of shopping and restaurants. I noticed that some people in their reviews were grumbling about $16/day valet. We opted not to do valet and there is a parking garage right around the corner that is $4/day. In other words, valet can be avoided easily.

The hotel is older and well worth a good deal (via priceline or whatever)... but I wasn't wildly impressed. The hotel backs up to a park that is full of homeless; however the hotel is minutes from anywhere you would want to be in Birmingham, Alabama.

My family and I stayed at this hotel on our way back home from vacation. The hotel is very unique and decorated in a posh manner. The breakfast was very fresh and good. We were greeted at the front desk with a wonderful smile and warm welcome. The location is right in the middle of the five points area of Birmingham. The staff was super friendly and acted like they enjoyed their jobs. They have valet parking but there is a parking lot behind the hotel which will save you $12. My only comp... Read more

We planned a family reunion in Birmingham and stayed at this hotel. The location was perfect for events planned, as well as for getting a feel of downtown Birmingham. Arrival and assistance with luggage and parking were handled smoothly. The room was spacious and clean. The breakfast ample and offerings broad enough for our tastes.

As a hotelier, I called many hotels to find the perfect stop over from Knoxville to Rosemary Beach. Once I called Hotel Highland and spoke to Brenda I was Sold! Her service was over the top from inquiry to reservation to arrival and snack request! She was so accommodating and is seriously the definition of FIVE Star Service! I have worked in the hotel industry for 30 years and know first hand how rare this top quality personal service is. Kudos to Brenda for making sure our vacation got off... Read more

Awesome Local with modern artistic flare. Incredible walking district. No need to go far, though. Killer steakhouse to one side and incredible beer bar to the other. Friendly, courteous staff, great location, FANTASTIC hotel. Reasonable rates - especially compared to surrounding hotels.

I thought I recognized this building. Turns out it was the old Medical Arts Building of my childhood. In 1988 it became the Pickwick Hotel and in 2007 the Hotel Highland at Five Points. Talking to the staff, there has been no real update since the Pickwick days, but a major refurbishment is in the offing. Honestly, the property needs it. We were graciously upgraded to a suite. It was nice to have a microwave and fridge, but some of the fixtures in the kitchen area and the bathroom were very date... Read more

Rooms had very musty smell. Bathroom was not very clean, hair and scum on walls and floor. They charge 16.00 valet for guests, and had to retrieve our own car next morning . Breakfast was to be served at 6:00am, very rude breakfast lady told us to leave breakfast area because it was not ready at 6:00 Would not recommend this overpriced Hotel.

Lovey little Hotel. The staff was wonderful. Lots of places to eat and drink close by. Only con is the parking. Got in kind of late at night and had to use the valet, no parking available on the street. I understand there is a parking lot very close, but too tired to look for it or to lug my luggage very far. Would surely stay here again if I am ever in Birmingham.

There are no words to how great this hotel is for a girls weekend. We had two suites across the hall from each other. Rooms were spacious and the beds are very comfortable. The hotel bar is not great but the lobby is a good place to have coffee and conversation. The staff go the extra steps to make sure you have everything you need to enjoy your stay. Lots to do and see in the Five Points Area.

We were in Birmingham primarily, to eat at Frank Stitts restaurants and this hotel is close by and within walking distance of Bodaga Favorita which was fabulous! The hotel is comfortable and accommodating and one feels like Alice in Wonderland amid the "crazy" unique, but comfortable, colorful furniture! A fun place to stay in the heart of a busy part of the city, yet a quiet respite from the noise!

Loved my stay, loved the staff, everything was nice. The place was quaint with antique style furniture. The staff was friendly and informative. The problem is they have an airport shuttle, not affiliated, that comes but it doesn't start until like 7. Uber came un 5 minutes at 4am though.

I used to live in B'ham, and I want the Hotel Highland at 5 Points to be successful because B'ham needs a quirky, non-chain boutique hotel(s). Everyone is very nice, but the hotel needs some money spent on an update. Nothing too fancy, but just an thorough update. The location is great, and the rooms are huge for the price.

I recently visited this hotel. The reception and door people could not be nicer. The hotel recently changed its affiliation and correct rates were not available from Choice hotels. Things seemed to get lost in the transition. The room is more than adequate in size, but in dire need if renovation .For example , some of the window blinds were not functional. Even after telling the desk they were not fixed. Certainly an update is in order.

We have stayed at this place a few times over the years. When we first stayed there about a decade ago, it had great potential as a small urban historic hotel remodeled in unusual ways. The neighborhood had great retaurants and seemed to be on the upswing. The swing never swung - the great restaurants are still there, but you have to shake off panhandlers to walk to them. The staff is nice enough but the hotel is more flop than boutique. It seems to have had little investment or personal interes... Read more
