"I went with my husband to spend a quiet week - so we opted out of the 'resort' option and decided to go with Sapphire because it seemed like it was a more secluded and private place with a laid-back vibe.
I also ignored the other bad reviews because we are not people who require fancy or super high end accomodations. This not a good idea...
First of all, the staff are not friendly at all and the check-in process took about an hour.
Upon entering our 'upgraded' room, I wanted to cry because it smelled old and like mildew. After we opened the patio door to air it out for a few hours, it got much better and I did feel better too.
The beach is pretty and the view is amazing, but the sand/ water can be VERY rocky! I swear, I don't usually complain about a beach, but it was hard not to fall on rocks trying to get into the water.
The other thing that was terrible is the food, or lack of! There are 2 place to eat and both offer OVERPRICED burgers/ fries which are not good. In order to eat decent food, you must go into town (Redhook or Charlotte Amelie) and guess what? You have to take a taxi because walking is not a safe option due to the lack of sidewalks on the winding roads.
The market in Rehook where we bought food to keep at the condo (cereal, milk, coffee, fruit) was so overprice, I wanted to scream!
We had a nice dinner in Frenchtown at a place called Betty Blue(?) and also ate at Havana Blue, but that was also insanely expensive. There is a great pub in Red Hook called Molly Malone's and we ate there a few times. The staff there are great!
We spent a day on St. John's and that was lovely. Beautiful beach (Trunks Bay), good food and friendly people. I suggest taking the hourly ferry from redhook and spending time there as it's a beautiful place.
We also learned a bit too late that there are $1 busses along the roads which you can take instead of cabs - you just have to confirm they are indeed busses. You can tell if there are locals riding, it's a good indication.
Other than that, we had a nice and relaxing time as we made the best of it.
I would suggest you bring some food (pb&J, bread, cereal, etc.) and make your own breakfast and lunches.
OR just pay a bit more and stay at a better place :)"
