I stayed for business but the overall experience was great. My room was very spacious, it had everything you would need from tea and coffee making facilities (nespresso machine) to crystal glasses for water. It would be ideal for a couple wanting to explore the area. It is also really close to Blenheim Palace. The food was good but the portions were a little small (fine dining). The parking was limited but there is available parking close by if you talk to the receptionist about where is allowed... Read more

I cannot fault the hotel, it was nice to stay in an unspoilt country hotel that gave excellent service with the staff being very welcoming and making you feel at home. The food was excellent and me and my wife very much enjoyed our stay.

Lovely character hotel with great feature rooms. The rooms are large, comfortable and well equipped. The service from the hotel staff I found to be great, and parking was an added bonus in a place like this. Its right on the doorstep of Blenheim palace so plenty to do and there are some lovely cafes around in the square nearby.

Marvellous time with all in the hotel friendly and helpful. Food and choice were excellent. The breakfast was first rate. The location and amenities all around the hotel were fantastic with the opportunity visit The palace just by walking to the end of the street. The ability to park was a definite advantage.

From the moment we arrived, we felt very welcome. Having only booked the day before, we felt we might have been given a very standard room but were shocked at the room itself. Wonderful stay in a wonderful village! And just a very short and picturesque walk to Blenheim Palace.

I booked this hotel as I was working at Blenheim Palace, I couldn't have been happier with my choice - it was quicker to walk to the Palace grounds than to drive, and the hotel had a very big free carpark. The staff at the hotel were very friendly, on arrival the first thing I needed was a pot of tea, the waitress gave me tea even though I'd not checked in added it to my room with such a level of trust that you rarely find in hotels these days. The room was a standard double booked through trip... Read more

Visiting Woodstock for the Blenheim triathlon. Stayed in a double room in the bed hotel. Room was small but very comfortable. The fitted bathroom was smart and well equipped.. Excellent breakfast. Cheerful and flexible staff, many of whom have been there for a long time. I visited many times before and will probably do so again.

Whenever I travel to Oxford for business I stay at The Bear. I love the charm of the centuries old building, with its fire places, wooden beams and creaky floors. Rooms are well-equipped and spacious. They're all different. Some rooms aren't that suitable for tall people, for instance because they have low door frames. Room 45 has a shower with such a low ceiling that anyone over 1.85 m will not fit underneath. Breakfast is delicious: cooked breakfast made to order. Good coffee too.

This is, or at least should be, a lovely hotel - an interesting and quaint building, ideally set within Woodstock, with staff who are invariably friendly and helpful. Each time we come (which is for both business and pleasure), though, there are a few 'little problems' that let down the experience. This time it was wasps in our room (clearly a nest nearby, though we and the staff couldn't identify where, and there were no alternative rooms available) and a power cut. The latter was not the hotel... Read more

Hotel great, the Park Suite fantastic, but what a meal? We were dinner b&b and paid £3 each for mash, courgettes, my wife had ox cheek lasagne at £5 premium, terrible meal, my chicken consume had far too much garlic, head waiter bought the wrong starter, no apologies but the two girls tried hard. Breakfast ok but make sure you get in the deal as at £21 each not great.

The title says it all, really - the staff are the jewels in the Bear's crown - everyone was very attentive, friendly, courteous, welcoming and helpful. We particularly like that breakfast is still cooked to order (unlike most other hotels where buffet breakfasts are now the norm). Dinner was very good, too. We have stayed in the main building before but preferred the rooms in the 'house' (51 onwards, I think).

Booked this hotel as a last minute thing. It's a lovely hotel, and the staff were effecient and polite. Had a drink at the bar on a sunny day, which was nice. The room was a decent size, the wall was a bit thin and can hear what's going on next door. The bed was very comfortable and the breakfast was filling and tasty the next morning. Overall, happy with the stay.

We enjoyed a good overnight stay at The Bear. However, although our room was classified as an "Executive" room, presumably because it had two chairs, it was on second floor and was very stuffy, with only a small window and a fan, which was insufficient. Given its location I do not believe that this should be an "Executive" room, plus the shower leaked beneath the screen all over the floor.

We were disappointed to find our room was not in the main hotel i.e. we had to go out of the hotel walk a few yards down the road and enter another building. This was not explained in any of the information we saw about the hotel and we would have preferred to experience the original hotel itself. Our room had a dog basket in it which led us to believe we had been mixed up with someone else that needed it. We stayed at the Bear overnight midweek when visiting Blemnheim for the Countryfile Live show. The hotel we found charming and convenient and the accommodation very good Staff were very courteous and helpful. The restaurant was very nice but despite ordering in the bar (main course only) and being taken to our table on time for the reservation for we had made dinner we waited over an hour for our meal to be served Overall we felt that the hotel was overpriced despite its quality

Good position in the town. Parking was not a problem. Room was clean and more than adequate. Bar was not very imaginative. Service in the restaurant was slow for dinner, but good for breakfast. Food quality was good. A little on the pricey side.

We had a pleasant stay, but it didn't quite tick all the boxes for us. Not happy about the hotel charging so much more for eating the same food in the restaurant as offered in the bar and also for charging for haddock at breakfast. The quality of the food we had though, was very good. We were kept awake at night by a very bright light outside the bedroom window. We never got our wake up call, so in that respect we were lucky we were awake! Service was generally good.

Our stay was wonderful , totally luxurious. Our room was on the small side and rather warm not helped by no ventilation in the bathroom however a fan was provided. The evening meal was delicious which we expected from a four star hotel. The staff were extremely helpful and very efficient. Our breakfast was the best we have had anywhere. I would recommend this hotel to all my friends and family. The location is ideal for visiting Oxford and the Cotswolds

We stayed here for one night on impulse whilst enjoying a day trip to Oxfordshire. We have previously stayed in another Macdonald hotel (The Compleat Angler in Marlow) so knew that this would be very good. Our day trip coincided with a weekend event at Blenheim Palace, unbeknownst to us in advance, and there were very few rooms available in Woodstock or its vicinity. Pokey room, unhelpful (verging on haughty) staff. We had to find our way alone to a room at the end of the court yard and carry our bags in the rain. You would expect so much more for your £240 a night; and it was our anniversary.
