We stayed only for one night but it was great. The dinner was outstanding. Great wine list, also by glass. A lot of local beers on tap. The rooms are very clean and comfortable. The Pub is located very close to the cathedral and has free parking. We will definitly come back!

I booked last minute after reading reviews. On arrival, the place was nice in appearance and my room was lovely (Wolverston I think). I hadn't realised it was a Fullers pub because I've had a bad experience in the past and may have hesitated. The staff were REALLY nice but unfortunately my room turned out to be above the 2nd kitchen. I was awoken by clattering pots at 10.45pm. The noise came from below my room, but also through my window which had no latch. I rang down to complain, as I had slep... Read more

hubby came here a few weeks ago for a function and hasn't stopped raving about the place, so much so that he insisted on bringing me here for our wedding anniversary dinner on Sunday night. we travelled 50 miles for the high expectations from me! Lovely quirky pub, old prep school I think, school desks in the bar which were a nice touch, the restaurant which was busy was full of memorabilia, wonderful! We had just completed the second leg of the Clarendon Way, walking from Houghton to Winchester, and arrived at the Wykeham Arms at tea-time. This fine establishment has a wonderfully quiet and secluded location between Winchester College and the Cathedral, so that all of the most interesting sites--the river Itchen, the College and Cathedral are in easy walking distance. It is ideal for Clarendon way walkers because it is very close to the way's end (or begining). As we checked in, the staff we... Read more

We keep coming back, so they are definitely doing something right. Classy food that covers the range between pub staples and fine dining is backed up by a great range of wines and ales. Atmosphere and service is relaxed and friendly. Hours of fun are to be had examining the quirky collections of items spread around the bar & retaurant. The rooms are comfortable and are located either in the pub itself, or in an annex immediately across the road.

My husband, children and parents stayed here for 1 night. We last stayed here about 20 yrs ago. Still got bags of character but parts of it feel very forgotten about. The downstairs loos are so smelly! Great breakfast and staff were great with the exception of 1 waitress who didn't seem to be on the same planet as everyone else. Would recommend the Wykeham Arms as a true Winchester experience but it could do with a lick of paint.

Yes the food was good, and it should be with dinner for 2 inc' wine at £90. The staff are friendly enough, but if you don't like it their way, then hard luck. The rooms are fine, again all well enough, but ours wasn't cleaned well on the days we stayed. There were light bulbs not working in the room and not replaced. The bars are lively but I wasn't sure if I was staying in a hotel, Inn, bar or pub. At over £190 per night, for 2 B&B I think I expected and should have received more.

We spent one night at the Wykeham Arms while visiting Winchester. The pub was very buzzy in the main bar, the eating areas were off to one side and every pleasant. Had an unprecendented experience today when I walked into this pub and asked whether they could provide a high chair. He looked at me as if I spoke Martian. When I explained that I had an 8-month baby, he simply shrugged and said "we don't accept children here." Must have been part of the historical 17th Century tour that I was unaware of :).

One of the best Sunday roasts we've had in a pub. Beef was great - loads of it cooked rare with massive home made Yorkshire, beautifully cooked vegetables and crunchy roast potatoes. The lamb and pork were just as good and the set 3 course lunch was terrific value at £25. We had a bottle of the house claret which was very good. I have been coming to the Wykeham for many years and I have always given it 5 stars and recommended to all of my friends. During my last stay, many of the things I liked about the Wykeham were still there, but it felt a bit too corporate for me. It has changed ownerships and management over the years. The rooms are still as eclectic as always and the charm of staying there is an experience to be had. However, it typically carries a price higher than the surrounding hotels and part of ... Read more

I only usually write reviews about b&bs or restaurants where I have had a satisfactory experience, however, I feel so annoyed in this case that I'm going to break my rule. This is an expensive b&b, which I wouldn't mind, as it's in the centre of Winchester and the installations are not bad. However, to arrive after a long, hot day's drive expecting to be able to take a shower before an important dinner appointment and to find there is no hot water is no joke. Stumbled upon this place in Kingsgate village area close to cathedral & the colleges/schools, while looking for a nice dinner stop off on a long traffic-filled drive back to London. First impressions - loved curved 'saloon doors' entrance & interesting historical decor. Owners definitely seem to be fans of 'maximalism' - plenty of different rooms filled with lots of interesting quirky pictures and items to look at - and great loos too - always important! Fab service from lovely staff and we both... Read more

A night of luxury after walking the South Downs Way. After a 100 miles the room was amazing with excellent facilities-bath/shower, bed, tv, tea making facilities and complimentary drinks in the fridge

Best location in old Winchester by Cathedral-easy stroll to river, shops etc. Lovely atmosphere in cosy clean rooms - a privilege to stay (rooms may be opposite in The Saint George building-no problem). Welcoming staff. Meals available if required. Few negatives - veggie breakfast options limited (hash browns & veggie sausage on request would be nice on menu). Also be aware if using bed settee in Bakehouse suite- the Fire Exit light must stay on all night due to Health & Safety but it would be n... Read more

After hearing good things about this place, had to try it for a treaty lunch. It did not disappoint! The pub oozes old fashioned charm with eating possible in various cosy nooks. Essential fire burning in the main bar area and lovely hot radiators. Staff were helpful and service faultless. The menu was very varied with the usual staples of fish and chips to an indulgent chateaubriand. We shared the perfectly executed black pudding bubble and squeak, followed by the breast of duck and pan-fried s... Read more

I've been going to the Wykeham Arms for over thirty years and in my opinion it's certainly gone downhill. I went there with my wife and four old friends and whilst some of the food was ok, it was generally over-priced and pretentious. A starter of Pan-fried scallop (yes, really, just the one!) braised pig cheek, chorizo, crisp cavolo nero (whatever that is) for £11.95 is a joke...and there's plenty of similar stuff, that shouldn't belong in one of Winchester's best-loved pubs. Go for the W... Read more

Great pub, quirky and full of character. Room/suite was cosy and had everything we need. Only downside was windows did not shut in bedroom. Food was excellent service let it down. Evening meal was good except food only warm and no sauces until we had nearly finished meal. Breakfast was completely wrong for both of us, not that busy so would have hoped that it would have been ok

I had the "Bakehouse" which was in a series of buildings opposite to the public house and access was not easy. In fact the small building was quite well presented but I should have been warned that it was split level with just the double bed in a loft and sitting area, clothes cupboards/drawers and bathroom downstairs. This was completely unsuitable for a pensioner with two metal hips! Very poor value at £184 per night. The stair access to the left was steep and narrow. Necessary visits to the... Read more

So well looked after from arrival to departure the next morning. A gathering of very old friends over an eight hour lunch, just fab. Phil our waiter was just incredible, very funny and got the measure of us all in moments. Food great, room lovely, would highly recommend a visit, we will definitely be going back.

had many a pleasant evening at the Wykeham Arms in the past but will NEVER go again after my wide and ikds were denied access despite only seeking brief shelter from a torrential downpour. Dogs on the other hand would be perfectly welcome.

Our daughter booked this as she wanted a traditional pub and roast for our day at Winchester Christmas Market. Lovely interior, open fires, busy, friendly bar staff, nice ambience through the bar into restaurant area. Good service, excellent roasts (beef, lamb, turkey). Good ale and wine selection. Very happy.....will book again.

This is a fantastically located hotel very close to the Cathedral and town. We stayed in The Hamilton Room which was very spacious, and comfortable with an amazing bathroom. The food at both dinner and breakfast is highly recommended. We will definitely be staying again.

This is not just a place to stay - it is an experience. From the time we arrived until the time we left, we were treated with such warm and friendly service, especially by Phil. We appreciated Chloe granting an exception for us to dine in the pub to soak in the ambience of the fire and the buzz of patrons. The battered cod and trout were incredibly delicious!! We so appreciated Jon allowing us to help with the Christmas decorating too - treating us to mulled wine and lemon lavender cake. W... Read more

Can we forgive a xmas tree on 22 nov? Yes we can. Hubby decided on a trip to Winchester today so after a trot up St. Catherine's Hill and a stroll into town we were very pleased to stumble through the fantastically curved doors of the Wykeham Arms. Inside we were treated to a scholarly seating arrangement. Old desks and low level lighting added to the Potteresque style, the ceiling festooned with canes and steins and the even better Thomas Crapper toilets (please say they are original). Earl Gr... My boyfriend and I decided on a city break to Winchester as we have never been before and picked The Wykeham arms to stay. Lovely pub, warm and cosy with a real wood fire (the smell was just amazing!). We were welcomed as soon as we arrived and even if we were extremely early for check in, they kept our bags so we could go for a stroll in town while waiting for our room to be ready. The Nelson room is beautiful! Big comfy bed, stunning bathtub and all the amenities one would need. They had put e... Read more

Booked this Pub for my Girlfriend and Me, after poping in for a drink earlier in the year, and it was great the staff where spot on, so was the beer and the Food, the mega roast (Turkey,Beef,Lamb) was good, meat tender, Good size and the potatoes and veg equally as good. A Bit on the pricey side so wouldn't be a everyday trip but well worth a treat.

Picked the Wykham due to location and being able to park. Read the reviews and we weren't disappointed. The house wine was good value for money and the room very comfortable. Loved the ambience of the pub, staff were very friendly. Would stay again.

I've known of the Wykeham for years as my mum lives in Winchester. Been there many a time but never to stay. We were visiting my mum, from California, and decided to stay at the Wykeham due to it being the Wykeham really. Location is great, by the cathedral, easy walking for the town centre, and as I said, it's the Wykeham! It's a Fullers pub, so you get Fullers beers and a few others. We didn't have dinner - it was booked solid - but we had their inclusive breakfast which was fabulous. Re... Read more

I visited this great pub exactly a year ago today with a friend visiting from Oz and we absolutely loved it so I decided to go back with another friend this afternoon. Well I can truly say it was even better than I remembered and the staff were so friendly and accommodating. In particular the really great guy behind the bar who some how managed to recognized me from the last time I came in and was just as helpful and friendly as he was a year ago to the day....I wish I got your name to personall...
