Very unusual Hotel. Looks as though it was built in the forest. Very pleasant receptionists. Large, clean bedroom with Sky television. All the extras you would expect in a first class hotel. Breakfast was excellent. Very pleasant staff. Next door is the zoo and many interesting finds within 10 miles. It would have been nice to see the manager walking around, though. I would highly recommend it. Enjoy!

We stopped as a family for a night on the way back from camping in the New Forest to have a little comfort. Yes, the place is a bit crazily laid out. Yes, the preponderance of pine can look faded and tired. But the basics were all good, and to be honest, when you've got young ones running around like crazy you don't want something to be too pristine for fear of them wrecking it. We arrived pretty late in the afternoon and had a good soak in the pool. There is a sauna but it seemed to actually... Read more

We got married here last May and went back there this year to celebrate our first anniversary. The staff were very helpful and managed to get me booked into the same wedding suite we stayed in for our special day. We both had a lovely lunch there, my wife had a lovely chicken and bacon sandwich and I had a spicy chicken pie with the most chicken I've ever seen in pie, there just have been a whole chicken breast in there! We stayed here for one night as we were visiting friends in the area. There was a wedding going on so it was quite busy. The room: we had a standard double which was big with a massive bed, two chairs and coffee table, plenty of room to walk around. The bed was very comfortable, bed linen clean, fresh and good quality. There was an iron and ironing board in the wardrobe and a hairdryer too. The bathroom: this is the reason why only 4 stars. Very dated and tired, guess the bathrooms are g... Read more

Stayed one night for a business meeting at the zoo. An unusual building that does feel a little dated. I can agree with comments about the musty smell in the corridors that link the rooms. Unfortunately it gives a poor first impression. My particular room was clean but again in need of some work. The walls were full of scuff marks and there was a light shade missing in the bathroom. There was a choice of pillows and I found one that was very comfortable. I was pleasantly surprised by our evenin... Read more

I stayed here with my brother for the Goodwood Festival of Speed, we stayed for a total of 4 nights in a twin room. Previous comments on the musty smell in the corridors is accurate and the whole place needs some work to bring it up to modern standards, but overall the hotel was fine. The bedroom was warm (perhaps too warm) and the bed very comfortable, but the bath suite looked like it has come straight out of the 70s. Hotel was very tired and smelt musty. Room was ok and on the surface looked clean but when I went to plug my phone into re-charge I found what can only be described as a well chewed chicken bone, luckily that was found on the day of departure. Evening meal was excellent. It was such a shame that the restaurant had absolutely no atmosphere and it was so poorly decorated.

Location - an easy drive from central Winchester, and literally, just across the road from Marwell Zoo Good sized room, comfortable bed - a little too soft for my liking, but that is purely personal preference, Sky tv. No air con, there was a fan in the room. Restaurant on site - service was attentive without being overly so, food was great, well presented, tasted good, and the dessert I had - Green Apple Parfait (apparently new on the menu), was SUPERB.

My room looked lovely except on closer inspection, the king size bed was lumpy, the bathroom needs modernising (cracked tiles and dead flies in the ceiling light) and unresolved TV issues. On a positive note, there w... Read more

I booked a room for my family for one night. A double room with bunk beds for the kids. Arrived early evening, checked in and then we all ate from the bar menu, good food. There was a wedding on so the bar area was quite busy but it didn't feel crowded. The room was nice, clean, new tv, good bathroom. In the morning I took the kids to the pool which they enjoyed and then we had the buffet breakfast, good selection of hot and cold items, Will stay again for sure.

We were in desperate need of a hotel around the area and I went onto booking.com and found this place. It is so close to the South Hampton airport but you would never know, it's quite hidden and can be hard to get to unless you have a GPS like we did. Upon arriving, I was surprised to see that it was located directly across from the Marwell Zoo. I absolutely loved the layout and safari feel to the place. It is definitely an experience. Beds were comfortable, breakfast was great. Bathrooms could ... Read more

Stayed here after a visit to the zoo...staff were friendly and helpful could not do enough for us. Room was lovely and bright.we had dinner in the restaurant and it was amazing . The restaurant manager Alex was attentive and very knowledgeable about the food he was serving. The receptionist had great customer care skills and her interaction with customers was excellent. Will be back . Thank you Kim and Alan

Came here as a last minute getaway with the family , thinking good idea as so close to the ZOO for the following day . Hotel is ok , clean everything you would expect for a over night stay . The food WOW !!! , VERY SURPRISED ! a very pleasant surprise indeed, it was brilliant. Hotel is ideal for a stay for the Zoo , but the food is a must !

I rarely write TripAdvisor reviews - in fact, I have not written one for a few years. But after a stay at The Marwell Hotel earlier this month, I felt leaving an honest review might be the only way for the hotel to see the error of its ways, given that the reception manager did nothing to alleviate our concerns when we complained. The only reason I have given this hotel a 'poor' rating, rather than 'terrible', is because a) it is in a nice setting and looks fairly decent from the outside and b)... Read more

We recently stayed at the Marwell Hotel whilst nearby at a wedding on the 3rd October as it was recommended by the wedding venue. As such, we didn't use all the hotel facilities that were available like the pool, evening restaurant etc. I will only review the room and breakfast. We arrived mid afternoon in the quiet time between the wedding itself and the evening do. We had booked a normal room, but as it was also my wife's birthday, we upgraded to the executive suite (room 215). First impressio... Read more

We stayed at the hotel whilst attending a Wedding reception. The Wedding reception function room was beautiful. It looked like it had recently been renovated. We had paid to stay in one of the hotels "superior rooms", I had read on the website that these rooms were recently renovated. We were disappointed when arriving in the room as it looked like it had not been renovated for many years. With old fashioned style curtains and throws, scuffs on the wall, dirt marks on the walls, grime around t... Read more

Stayed at this hotel for one night . Found the water EXTREMELY hot !! The room was a standard double on the ground floor very nice size .Lovely touches with magazines and an assortment of drinks including hot chocolate. The bed was really uncomfortable with springs sticking into us all night .There is a swimming pool but unfortunately it shut at 9pm shame it did not stay open until 10 so could have had a chance to use it . I stayed in the hotel for a couple of nights. My overall impression is that it is a unique hotel setting and layout but it is in desperate need of refurbishment. The room I was in had a very worn carpet and the bathroom suite looked something from the 70s. The room was not dirty however due to the age of the bathroom suite and the carpet it gave the impression of being unclean. I did however have a very good night sleep in the comfortable bed and the blackout curtains were very effective.I was d... Read more

To start with the staff were amazing, always helpful and what appeared sincere smiles. The lounge and reception areas were aesthetically pleasing, the rest of the hotel was enough considering the price. The dinner in the restaurant possibly the best tasting food I've ever had, was a pleasant surprise, almost out of place it was that good. The breakfasts were of good quality and generous. The pool area was quiet, small and clean. The sauna floor was too hot so would recommend wearing flip flops ... Read more

we've just returned from our stay at the marwell hotel. On the plus side the kids had a fantastic time and couldn't fault it, the hotel is very geared up towards children and families, there was a film playing upstairs in the main reception area and our room had sky tv which was fab. The pool was nice but alot smaller than the photos. The sauna was not at all hot for some reason and when we went for a swim the next morning there was no sauna or jacuzzi working which was dissapointing. Our room ... Read more

Stayed with family here recently. Two of us had the family room and the third had a twin room. The twin room was lovely as it had been upgraded but the family rooms were very disappointing.. like they were stuck in the 1970s... comfortable bed but decor very dated and carpet worn thin. Bathroom was a light blue suite.. very dated and the hot water was EXTREMELY hot. Dining room is lovely and staff very good at both dinner and breakfast. Err... it's eclectic. Sorry, that is the nicest thing I can say. It's not terrible and for a family with kids, perfect for the zoo. Flipping' expensive for a tiny, dark, slightly musty and very tired room. I felt cleaner before I got into the bath than when I got out. Needs a LOT of work on everything!

Stayed here whilst attending a friends wedding, not the best hotel we have stayed in but still quite nice. The room we had was right at the back of the hotel but it was comfortable, the bar was as you would expect pricey and the service was slow. The best part is the self service buffet breakfast which was really nice. I would stay here again but only to attend a function.

Very comfortable rooms and friendly staff but the unique layout means a lot of cold corridors probably better in the summer. Food is nice but menu lacks some more basic choices. Good for a family break as Marwell Zoo just a walk away.

We stayed here on our wedding night. We arrived just after midnight, exhausted after our busy special day! We just wanted to crash in our room, no body was in reception so we ended up waiting for 30 mins for someone to come and check us in! No staff in sight! We were stood in someone else's wedding reception, must not have been nice for the other bride. When we got to our rooms it was freezing cold, we expected maybe a note to say congratulations or some petals on the bed on arrival but didn't r... Read more

We stopped here for a quick get away...wasn't sure about the hotel considering the previous reviews, but to our relief we had a very comfortable stay. Lots to do in the area, zoo, walks great restaurants in nearby Winchester too. Staff where friendly and room was clean and tidy and the breakfasts was nicely done. The hotel is definitely different from any other hotel we have stayed at...very unique and worth a visit.

I have out of necessity stayed at this hotel several times in the last few months on business. On these occasions I have had the older style rooms, which can be described as tired at very best. However, colleagues who stayed in redecorated rooms, were certainly happier with their stay than me. The whole place is dated, and it doesn't really make much sense. The safari theme is lost, and it's certainly not really suitable for productive business trips. On the positives, the food is reasonable ... Read more

The Hotel is looking a little tired especially in the rooms. The staff do make up for any short falls in the hotel. Very friendly staff who are accommodating and eager to please. Great nights sleep. Delicious breakfast. A bargain on bookings.com but not sure I'd have paid full price for the room.

Stayed for one night for family birthday. Prior to arrival checked online to see quoted price of room online (£78). I had been asked to pay £130 (including dinner), for singly occupancy. Felt that the difference of over 50 pounds was too much to be expected to pay for dinner. On arrival I questioned this with staff. They advised that I could be moved to a non 'superior' room and the price reduced to £105. Why I had been placed in this expensive room is beyond me. Still very overpriced. Stan... Read more

Great hotel, lovely facilities and beautiful food. Great customer service and in pretty surroundings, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Would stay again without a doubt. Sky in the room with CBeebies to keep little one entertained whilst getting ready. Great pool for a swim and amazing zoo next door. Only slight negative was the shower was so weak could barely wash - but wouldn't stop us visiting again. Highly recommend.

As I have stayed here previously I thought I'd bring the family down. The room was clean and the hotel had this little fun pack for the children on arrival. I guess it was a bit of a disappointment that the children's bunk beds weren't cordoned off from the main room, but it was hardly a problem. The shower was not brilliant either, but overall the room was comfortable. Service was very good and with a smile, Wifi is still also very good. Would we come back, absolutely.
