Having had such a really nice stay here last year we were particularly disappointed this time around. Since our last visit we have received several marketing emails with offers and promotions. We decided to respond to one of these and booked the ‚??Spring / Early Summer Special‚?? which stated the following : Enjoy a 2 night stay in one of our individually themed rooms with Asparagus veloute on arrival, a 2 course evening meal on the first night, sherry in your room and afternoon tea on the sec... A most enjoyable stay! We were fascinated by the history of the hotel - e.g. departure point of first stage coaches, and previous guests such as Charles Dickens. The food was very good and the staff pleasant and helpful.

Booked at short notice and were accommodated early as very busy and the meal and whole evening showed why. The food was superb and the service friendly and efficient. The old world ambience and decor is warm and relaxing ,a good wine list at reasonable prices and a good range of beers adds to the menus attraction. We couldn't believe how lucky we had been to find such a great place! The staff are fantastic - well trained, and They couldn't do enough for us, very friendly and made us very welcome. Our large room at the top was great and spacious enough to enable us to do some reading and chilling out on the sofas whilst staying. The Restaurant was busy with locals even on a Monday and the menu and food quality were excellent. Breakfast was great I had the English, and there were many options, fish veggie e... Read more

lovely little B&B right in the centre of Whitby The room was small but more than adequate and yeah there's plenty of stairs but staff did offer to carry our bags. I loved the fireplace. There wasn't a view in our room, (I think it was the Scarabee?), but we didn't go for the view It's Whitby and therefore very hilly, if you want flat go to Anglia. I can vouch for the food having had an evening meal and breakfast The staff were lovely and able to answer any queries we had it was my firs... Read more

The WH&G is definitely quirky! Last minute booking and didn't realise that as a result we were in the attic... Literally! Lovely view but a lot of stairs which could be troublesome to anyone less able bodied. A warning should be given when booking. The bed was hard and not very comfortable but the shower was lovely hot and good pressure. The best was the breakfast... Lots to choose from and very tasty... From full English to smoked kippers to eggs benedict... Lovely! Would we stay there again... Read more

Our stay here was pretty on par with other "guest house" locations...not a B&B/ not a hotel. Location is a bit tough to get to with your luggage so be mindful of whether or not you need to haul it all depending on parking - cobblestone is hard on rollerbags! Great access to everything you need in Whitby. No complaints, really! They have clearly done a lot with a very old building and it does have charm about it. Only stayed one night, no breakfast as we had a long haul to Scotland in the morning... Read more

This is a small pub with a restaurant at the back. The waitress was very friendly but whoever pulled the beer was thinking about something else. Then we spent a few minutes trying to stop the table wobbling as it appeared to have four legs all different lengths. The food itself was very good, and plenty of it. Why do restaurants use paper napkins? This isn't a burger bar, you're trying to be a proper joint. Make the effort and get proper napkins. Anyway, it was good food, well cooked and pretty ... Fantastic location, very characterful. Room big with comfortable bed. Breakfast good and service overall excellent. Being picky but having fresh milk in the room meant we had to ask when we needed more and as the bar was four flights down and I have a bad knee we went without the milk. The room was also advertised with a settee but when we arrived there was only a dining chair in the room which was a little disappointing. This was our first visit to the very cool seaside town of Whitby, and the White Horse and Griffin was the perfect location for exploring the town. The room was comfortable, clean, accommodating, and quiet. The restaurant serves good fare morning, noon, and night. And the cozy pub was welcoming and lively. We found the staff to be friendly and attentive. Fair warning, the Inn is on a narrow cobbled street with limited or no parking. This was easily resolved for us by parking in the public ca... Having read so many positive reviews, I was expecting more. It's also a member of a pubs marketing group with some exceptional places where we have stayed; it is not at the standard of those at all. Our room was OK, on the very top floor, big climb, one double and also two single beds. The bathroom was small though, with a real need for a place to put toilet bags and the nice large towels. We stayed in the wakeful King bedroom. Which we were unaware is situated at the front of the hotel on top floor over the main cobbled street. Windows are sash type and are loose and I lockable, so they don't keep any noise out from traffic, talking, seagulls, or bin men. I expect seagulls its Whitby by the sea. But I expect Windows to at least try to seal out as much noise. We have stayed here before at the back and it was quiet, this room is big but not recommended if you want a good night slee... The down side of staying in an historic building is that there are steep stairs (made clear on website) and the rooms are not a uniform shape. We were at the top in the eaves so the room was a bit of an odd shape but we liked the minimalist lack of furniture and the airiness of being up among the chimney tops. Some space around the bed would have been nice. The style of the hotel is very hipster. Complementary toiletries and good complementary drinks. Our booking was slightly incorrect and w... Read more

We spent 2 nights here and thoroughly enjoyed staying in this historic old pub. It is located in the old cobbled street part of Whitby. Not easy to find if you have never been to Whitby before as you can't drive up to the pub as its in a pedestrian area. A friendly welcome and after a climb up 2 flights of stairs to our spacious room - large bathroom. The evening meal was great, super service and really tasty food. We didn't stay here so can't make comment on the accommodation so this review is purely about the food in the bar area. First of all, it ain't cheap so if you are after an alternative to fish & chips you'll have to dig a fair bit deeper. A pint of real ale is just shy of £4 and the Sunday Lunch is £12 for Beef and £13 for Pork. Fancy soup of the day for starters? That'll be £6.50 please! We took my wife's mum and sister to Whitby for the day during their stay in England. The fish and chip shops were queuing out the door and this place looked very inviting. Hotel is centrally located for the historic sights of Whitby. The building was the town's first coaching inn, but fell into disuse during World War Two and was used to store fisherman's nets. Called in to one of Whitby's oldest coaching inns for a few drinks. Dog friendly in the bar area, water dishes provided. Bar area is traditional hard floors and dark wooden bar furniture. Both high and low rise tables and chairs. Wifi available but sketchy depending where seated. Rest rooms likely not accessible for those with mobility issues. Restaurant at rear of premise, looks inviting but didn't try - small number of tables so would definitely need to book. The seafood menu options, as w... Read more

The rooms are all up several flights of stairs (mentioned on the website but not raised when discussing with staff prior to arrival although my wife has blue badge and suffers from arthritis of the spine). No car parking facilities. Too many dogs in the very small bar. No replenishment of milk when room was attended to (although we only had to ask). Very expensive drinks; pint of lager and a glass of white wine cost nearly £10).

Our room was the Warrior Queen which overlooked the courtyard. This had some privacy issues, particularly when sitting on the toilet! No problem though as blinds are provided. A great sized room and well equipped bathroom. We stayed two nights and slept very well. Despite being in the town centre there was little noise. The breakfasts were delicious and with a good choice available. We also ate in the restaurant on both evenings and would recommend it. The staff were a good mix of attentive but ... Read more

Olde worlde with todays charm. This is the best area of Whitby by far, in the middle of the old town. The hotel has proper charm. We've been here in the depth of winter and in summer. A delightful experience both times. We stayed in the the Mary Ann Hepworth Room which faces the side alley which once would have been the coaching entrance. It was fine, lovely bathroom, clean and a comfortable bed. Our only negative comment would be the seagull noise through the night and into the morning, but hey... Read more

Hidden gem tucked away amongst the standard pub meals and fish and chips options of Whitby. Excellent top notch restaurant attached to b & b pub on church st. Top service with friendly pleasant staff . Not cheap but certainly more than worth that bit extra. Definitely recommend.

Booked this stay on the way to whitby, arrived to be greeted in a friendly manner, easy check in. Lovely room up 3 sets of stairs ( it is a very old inn) shown to the room which was very clean, good shower and bath. One single bed one double, the double very comfortable. Tv and coffee making in the room. Only downside a wonky toilet seat which we reported as we left. The breakfast was really good, full english or kippers cereal and fruit etc. Would definately like to return.

My girlfriend and I came here after a cracking day around Whitby. We were spoiled for choice, but definitely made the right one here. Food, service and atmosphere were top notch and rounded off a fantastic day. Ps French tarte tatin, mixed with Yorkshire ice cream was to die for.
