Just arrived our reservation wasn't in the list, they found it after 15 minutes checking. Then one of the 2 rooms booked was still dirty, they had forgotten to clean that one, so more minutes to check and find another room. The rooms were not really clean, very smelly because of the moquette really dirty, the windows were broken (we couldn't have opened those during all the 3 days), the second day they took the dirty towels but forgot to put the clean towels in one of the rooms. It hasn't been a... Read more

Stayed here with some friends for a weekend and we were impressed with the hotel because it was so cheap but the facilities were great. We were not impressed with the fact the beds weren't changed. They simply put dirty bedding back on. The bathroom was not cleaned either. I would of given 4/5 if it was cleaned.

I've given a 2 mainly because of the bed which had a hard base topped with a 7-8 inch firm mattress. You cannot feel pampered sleeping on such a spartan arrangement. We did not sleep well unsurprisingly. This is so often the case in UK hotels. You just wouldn't get away with this skimping on comfort in the US where I travel extensively. Hoteliers here need to wake up to the fact that their first sale is a bed, everything else, although important, is secondary. The hotel has definitely seen bette... Read more

I booked a 'budget' double room for three nights (£60 per night) as that was the only double available on Hotels.com, the others being a twin or a family room. I checked in quite late one evening and was very disappointed with the room which smelled like an old peoples home whilst dinner was being served. Also, the room was really tatty and just looked grimy, especially in the bathroom. However, the bed was clean and comfy so I stayed that night. However, the following morning I asked to chang... A clean modernised room, decor unfussy, Well equipped for a short stay. . Free WiFi was reliable in the room. Hotel seemed well organised with pleasant staff. Large carpark was also useful. Very reasonably priced for the Friday night stay, I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the accommodation for the price and will not hesitate to return when I need to visit Reading again.

I was upgraded to one of the refurbished rooms at the back building and it was really good. It definitely has a nice feel to the place. Though the shower stall is a bit small, I found the rest of the room and the furnishings very comfortable. Weekend rates are really a great deal. Staff were helpful and friendly. The room was quiet.

We booked 2 rooms a family room and the budget double. The children stayed in the family room and this was good very roomy and comfortable. I stayed in the budget double.. this room seemed to be very dated. It was clean but very small. Breakfast was very good the staff in the restaurant was very helpful and did all they could to make our breakfast experience go well. We will definitely stay again.

Room was decent in a conveniently located hotel and moderately priced. Breakfast was also good. When we left I forgot my cap and after contact with the hotel they arranged to send it back to me at no cost to myself and as I had many cap pins, with a sentimental attachment, this was much appreciated.

Well with the mould (Noun - a furry growth of small proportions occurring .... Especially on ... Other organic matter.) growing out of the bathroom floor and the blood stain on the wall on the way in to the room I felt it really added character but overall it's safe to say the hotel was well below expected standard to say the least. Then the springs poking into your back through the night had a massaging effect however I was left sore afterwards (didn't rate the bed). Then thought the night ... Read more

After reading some of the reviews on here about the condition of the rooms, I was a little nervous about booking in. I don't know if I have different standards to other folks or just got lucky with my room, but personally I was very comfortable here. My double en-suite was in the main building where reception is, and was a good size, clean, and the bedlinen was fresh. The decor was a little tired in the bedroom maybe, but that doesn't bother me if the place is clean and comfortable and it was. ... Read more

Arrived at the main building to be told we were in a separate one a short walk away. This would not have been so bad except our room was up a few flights of stairs.the room was a disappointment.Very sparsely furnished and no additional blankets or pillows. There was a kettle microwave and toaster but the bare minimum of cutlery/crockery no bottle opener or tin opener. There were a couple of beetles on the worktop which put me off preparing anything. There was no where to sit and eat breakfast. A ... Read more

8 of us ladies stayed for two nights at this lovely hotel.. We arrived from neath South Wales late in the evening and were looked after straight away by the lovely staff. Our rooms were spacious and immaculate .. Beds were really comfortable and when we telephoned down for extra pillows we were given them within minutes without hesitation. We had a lovely restful sleep although the bells at the church across the road proved a bit of a pain for one of our party but can't be helped. In the morning... Read more

This hotel looks good from the outside with its gothic appearance and has plenty of parking. It is in a convenient location close to the university. The staff were very welcoming on reception. However, the whole hotel is need of refurbishment. The carpets are worn, the paintwork scuffed, and the furniture in the bedroom very basic, with minimal toiletries. The breakfast was excellent, served in a pleasant conservatory (but with a television blaring). There was homemade yogurt and preserves and a... Read more

A reasonably priced hotel, that was very clean, very friendly and helpful staff. the rooms are not big, we had a refurbished room which was nice. Watch your head on the cabinets in the bathroom when using the toilet! The down side to staying in the detached building is the high staircase to carry your luggage up. We found it very quiet.

Lovely building , clean rooms and helpful staff. Beds uncomfortable - this was a worker's hotel mainly. There was a fridge and microwave in the room, plates and cutlery. Very handy. Bus stop across the road to Reading Central. However, there were a couple of health and safety issues. Vacuum cleaners left overnight in corridors r by the lift, kettle lid popped up when boiling, and there was no warning about the water getting hot very quickly. We did report the kettle on the last day, because we w... Read more

This Hotel was well placed for the family event we attended. Breakfast was enjoyable and facilities were as described. It was value for money and we would stay again . One of the best in that financial bracket. The building façade is very appealing and we had a good bedroom and a comfortable night sleep. Again staff were welcoming , helpful and friendly.

Cost was reasonable, and the room was clean, we had one of the un-refurbished rooms. We were in the annex which meant a bit of a walk with luggage, and upstairs, no lift! But were able to park close to our room, would have been nice to know before lugging all our bags! Fridge, microwave was nice to have, cutlery was sparse and we had no teaspoon. The main complaint was the extremely uncomfortable bed, it was like sleeping on a rock, my hips and my hubands ribs, we DID NOT, get a good nights s... Read more

Booked well in advance. Just as well the place was full for the Reading university graduation days. Single room - with ensuite. One of the un-refurbished rooms - but clean and adequately furnished. Comfortable bed, Ensuite reasonable size - and shower was good. Hope they don't lose the tile work when it is refurbished. The room was built into the eaves and may have started life as servants quarters but the space was intelligently used so didn't feel at all claustrophobic. It was very thoughtful... Read more

We spent one night here out of necessity as the access to the university was good from this location. The building looked as if we were in for a treat. We found our room in the 'modern' extension at the rear which was a close match for the student accommodation we've seen locally. Mouldy grout, cracked 1990's tiling, stained vinyl and a cracked sink. The room itself was clean and functional, domestic fridge, microwave and crockery my be some people's needs desirable. For the price this place was pretty poor, room was large but had a microwave propped up on a large fridge next to a nest of wires with a large ikea type desk shoved into the corner of the room. Hotel is spread over a couple of buildings and the 3rd person in our group was in a different building in the attic room which is a good job she is only 5ft as if you had been any taller you would have been smacking your head every 5 minutes. Arrived at 3pm to check in to be told our room was not ready. We were unhappy about this as check in was from 2pm. We were given an alternative room (in main building) Tried to charge me more for room than I had email confirmation of in my booking direct with hotel. Room was tatty ; peeling wallpaper, limescale around taps, grubby carpet. Very disappointed. Would not recommend or ever stay here again. Pay extra few pounds and stay elsewhere.

Dreadful hotel spread over several buildings. My first allocated room was in the main building. It was a hot and cramped 'double' room with a bed you could only just walk around to get to the window. I noticed the 'wardrobe' had no rail in it or even hooks. Having a suit and shirts to hang, this wouldn't do. The staff at reception were OK about it, explaining that not all rooms had space for a proper wardrobe (though they all seem to have space for a full-size fridge and microwave). I was offere... The staff at check in were great, the room was tiny, double bed but only just room for it, there was no rail in the tiny wardrobe the windows were single glazed with an Ikea type venetian blind, so the room was too light to sleep, the view out of the window was of the roof of the conservatory below which was black with dirt, as was my window. This hotel is a little gem, in a lovely part of Reading. It's on a direct bus route (claret 21) if you are coming on public transport from the station. There seemed to be lots of parking spaces too. Yes, the hotel is old and dated, but I thought that just added to its charm. My room was fine, equipped with a little fridge and kettle. Everything worked perfectly, great shower and comfy bed.
