As with most reviewers the parking is a nightmare! The reception staff were indifferent to our plight (presumably they are used to the incessant comments from guests about the lack of spaces for guests) This hotel is 3 star in terms of the rooms and standard of facilities, basic, clean, good location with average breakfast. The staff are there to do what is necessary. An average stay in a hotel with standards we have come to expect when traveling around Scotland.

We stayed here on the way to Mull. We had superior room. It was fine but smaller than expected. The staff were all very pleasant when I asked anything, but I had to ask! Information wasn't forthcoming. Breakfast was fine, but again, had to ask for items to be replenished. ..and it wasn't at the end of serving time. The one lift is inadequate to deal with a lot of travellers obviously leaving at the same time. ..presumsbly for ferries. I used the stairs and was disappointed to find every corri... Read more

Nicely refurbished bedroom and bathroom but public areas very tired with worn carpets and decoration. Also severely understaffed which showed at breakfast no WiFi in rooms and only 1 small lift for whole hotel.

Couldn't find a better place in Oban! It is such a charming hotel located in the middle of the city center, just a few seconds away from the shore. Staff was friendly (and not overly friendly which is great) and helpful, my single room was perfect and exactly what I needed: clean, beautifully decorated, comfortable, lots of daylight in the bathroom... We had superb live scottish music on Saturday night and there was a great atmosphere at the Pub/Lobby on the ground floor. I wish I could stay lon... Read more

We had 2 rooms for our stay in late May. The hotel is in a convenient location but there were many problems. The hotel appears to exist solely as a tour bus stop. The advertised free wifi is only free in the bar. The hotel is dusty and one of our rooms had a radiator that would not shut off and a window that was screwed shut. The food served at the included breakfast was the poorest we experienced during our 10 days in Scotland. In hindsight, we should have stayed at one of the many guest houses... Read more

The furnishings in our room were worn to say the least. The dark furniture was full of chips which showed clearly into the lighter wood beneath. The bathroom looked as though it was installed decades ago, black mildew around the bath and the shower screen and in the grout between the tiles. Carpets and tartan bedspread are old. Thankfully the sheets and duvet cover were clean. The long corridors leading to the rooms were full of chipped doors too, and every room we saw in the morning being c... Read more

We stayed at the Royal Hotel in Oban for one night. Sunday bed and breakfast £55 for two of us, a fantastic deal. When I telephoned to book the room the receptionist was very helpful. When we arrived at the hotel the two girls on duty were really pleasant, one of which I had previously spoken to book the room. As we were going on an excursion we were not able to check in due to our early arrival but none the less we were directed to the free car parking facilities, which was really helpful. The... The staff were lovely, but as they were advertising for quite a lot of staff, they were a bit stretched and covering many areas. The room we had was a "Superior Room" with sea view. The room was a corner of the building, and I should think at some time it would have been a cupboard. We were told the room had recently been redecorated and obviously had, however that didn't make the bathroom any bigger. It was so cramped that when you washed your hands in the basin, your legs were trapped by the t... Read more

Very disappointed in this hotel. I visited with a group in June the Room I was given was very hot inside, windows only opened a little so couldn't get any air in to the room, the walls in the room were warm. The meals were ok but nothing to write home about. Staff were friendly but some weren't bothered about you. I don't think I would stay at this hotel again.

Older hotel which has seen better days. Car park full and no alternatives suggested by disinterested reception staff. I understand hotèls want to save energy, but the room information asks guests not to use the lift to save energy - I was on the third floor so had to use it sometimes! Room was adequate although very dark - would suggest brighter light bulbs. Wi-fi charge in bedrooms which is ridiculous nowadays. Breakfast ok but there are nicer hotels in Oban.

We stayed in the Royal Hotel for two nights, and had a very comfortable stay. We were greeted warmly on arrival, and only had a short wait for the room to be ready. We stayed in room 406, a twin room overlooking the harbour, which was clean and comfortable. The only drawback with the room was the lack of wi-fi (it is available on the ground floor in the lounge bar). Breakfast is buffet style, mostly cooked items, although cereals and croissants are available too, and was good. The main drawback... Read more

Booked a single room for b and b at 5 days notice for a business trip. Understaffed reception, waited almost 15 minuites to check in. Place smelt of boiled cabbage !! Single room about the size of a prison cell, with rather a grubby bathroom. The whole hotel looked tired and depressing with a cooking smell everywhere. Breakfast was a buffet of congealed eggs and watery bacon from a buffet. Note. Teapots should hold more than a small cup of tea. Decided not to have supper despite being offered ... Read more

We have used Strathmore hotels for a number of years now. This was our first visit to Royal Hotel in Oban. The chain have spent a lot of money and time upgrading this hotel and I commend them for that. Our room 211 was spotless and had had a complete refurbishment so it is impossible to fault. Our evening meals were well presented, tasty, substantial and we always looked forward to them after a day out. Breakfast on the other hand is said to be the best meal of the day! I have visited the royal hotel in the last week, I arrived at the rear entrance of the hotel where I was informed via telecom device that there was no parking available after booking this hotel for the parking...! The hotel staff were very good as was the room and service, and I would stay here again in te future. If the hotel had more parking or moved the numerous vans from the car park area I would award it 5 stars. Steven lowrie Airdrie

The location & free parking was an important factor of booking this hotel for me. Can see the hotel is "tired" & in need of some updating but repairs to keep things going until that is done are fair. Room was hot but slept with both windows open & dealt with traffic noise. Staff friendly, helpful & have good sense of humour and hotel clean with excellent breakfast. The hotel is old and has fallen into a bit of disrepair so it is now quaint and quirky (watch the uneven step on level 2). Of course rooms are private and everything was tidy, but by making use of the space you end up with odd room shapes and bathroom sizes. All works though. Location is right in the heart of downtown, so location is great. And of course it's great value for the money.

This is an old hotel, without wifi in the room (you can pay 5£ for a poor wifi), no parking, and it's really dirty. it's a lot of dust, and it seems like the windows have never been cleaned. it smells of dust, and there are carpets, witch i assume is never vacuumed.

Not the happiest stay to say but the least. I traveled with a large party of older people on a coach trip. We were a little late arriving and had missed our ??slot?? for dinner so had to wait an hour before we could eat. We stayed at the Royal Hotel in Oban for two nights in May 2016. The location was fantastic, right in the middle of town, short walk to the ferry terminal (we took the ferry across to Mull). Parking is dire but the staff did what they could to help us, even directing us to where we could double-park if they knew the people we were parking in weren't going anywhere! Staying here with a group, we arrived at the hotel and found our rooms. I love the character of these older hotels, but this one could use a bit of a freshening up. Other than that the rooms we ok and I got to spend a bit more time in the room than I planned as my allergies decided to act up on me during my stay. Like others, the lack of in-room Wi-Fi was a bit inconvenient, but it was reliable once you were in range, which was a plus over a few hotels we stayed at over the week in Scotland.

I didn't mind that the room was tiny. I didn't mind that the room was tiny and at the back of the hotel. I do mind that the room 220 is immediately above the kitchen and there's nothing that can be done to cool it, despite a fan and open window. The hotel staff knew the problem before I'd even got to the room. But they still accepted my booking a month ago. A disgrace. Still, come December to March and it might be habitable

Unfortunately, the hotel is old and same the furniture and dark colors make it worth. Window could be open only 10 cm and was hot inside. Bed was moving at each move I made. This is an older hotel in a historic building. The rooms are what you'd expect in an older hotel, somewhat on the smaller side. We had two single beds in our room which were comfortable enough. As other reviewers mentioned, the rooms are on the warmer side and even with the windows opened, never cool down enough. I chose the Royal because it had a great deal of of £56 a night on for a single room (I stayed 2 nights) and it was handy for the ferry terminal and railway station. It's the kind of hotel that coach parties choose: big, once very grand, and used to dealing with large groups. My single room was small and overlooking the back of the hotel. A hotel for visitors &, as is common in Scotland, for locals too. I ended up on the 5th floor & was pleased by the quietness, view & room size. Parking could present some challenges in the busy months - the hotel CP's big enough for about a dozen cars, with some spots presenting interesting manoeuvring challenges for those that aren't good at slow/close moves. As far as Oban hotels go the Royal is not exceptionally bad, but sadly that is not saying a lot. Hotels in Oban, with a very few exceptions, need to dragged kicking and screaming into the 20th century. The 21st century might take them longer. The Royal was clearly once a very grand hotel. Sadly this grandeur has faded below that of a basic B&B. Car parking is a shambles, the receptionist lazily advised that the carpark was full even though I could see empty spaces.
