As with most reviewers the parking is a nightmare! The reception staff were indifferent to our plight (presumably they are used to the incessant comments from guests about the lack of spaces for guests) This hotel is 3 star in terms of the rooms and standard of facilities, basic, clean, good location with average breakfast. The staff are there to do what is necessary. An average stay in a hotel with standards we have come to expect when traveling around Scotland.

We stayed here on the way to Mull. We had superior room. It was fine but smaller than expected. The staff were all very pleasant when I asked anything, but I had to ask! Information wasn't forthcoming. Breakfast was fine, but again, had to ask for items to be replenished. ..and it wasn't at the end of serving time. The one lift is inadequate to deal with a lot of travellers obviously leaving at the same time. ..presumsbly for ferries. I used the stairs and was disappointed to find every corri... Read more

Couldn't find a better place in Oban! It is such a charming hotel located in the middle of the city center, just a few seconds away from the shore. Staff was friendly (and not overly friendly which is great) and helpful, my single room was perfect and exactly what I needed: clean, beautifully decorated, comfortable, lots of daylight in the bathroom... We had 2 rooms for our stay in late May. The hotel is in a convenient location but there were many problems. The hotel appears to exist solely as a tour bus stop. The advertised free wifi is only free in the bar. The hotel is dusty and one of our rooms had a radiator that would not shut off and a window that was screwed shut. The food served at the included breakfast was the poorest we experienced during our 10 days in Scotland. In hindsight, we should have stayed at one of the many guest houses... Read more

The furnishings in our room were worn to say the least. The dark furniture was full of chips which showed clearly into the lighter wood beneath. The bathroom looked as though it was installed decades ago, black mildew around the bath and the shower screen and in the grout between the tiles. Carpets and tartan bedspread are old. Thankfully the sheets and duvet cover were clean. The long corridors leading to the rooms were full of chipped doors too, and every room we saw in the morning being c... Read more

We stayed at the Royal Hotel in Oban for one night. Sunday bed and breakfast £55 for two of us, a fantastic deal. When I telephoned to book the room the receptionist was very helpful. When we arrived at the hotel the two girls on duty were really pleasant, one of which I had previously spoken to book the room. As we were going on an excursion we were not able to check in due to our early arrival but none the less we were directed to the free car parking facilities, which was really helpful. The... The staff were lovely, but as they were advertising for quite a lot of staff, they were a bit stretched and covering many areas. The room we had was a "Superior Room" with sea view. The room was a corner of the building, and I should think at some time it would have been a cupboard. We were told the room had recently been redecorated and obviously had, however that didn't make the bathroom any bigger. Very disappointed in this hotel. I visited with a group in June the Room I was given was very hot inside, windows only opened a little so couldn't get any air in to the room, the walls in the room were warm. The meals were ok but nothing to write home about. Staff were friendly but some weren't bothered about you. I don't think I would stay at this hotel again.

Older hotel which has seen better days. Car park full and no alternatives suggested by disinterested reception staff. I understand hotèls want to save energy, but the room information asks guests not to use the lift to save energy - I was on the third floor so had to use it sometimes! Room was adequate although very dark - would suggest brighter light bulbs. Wi-fi charge in bedrooms which is ridiculous nowadays. Breakfast ok but there are nicer hotels in Oban.

We stayed in the Royal Hotel for two nights, and had a very comfortable stay. We were greeted warmly on arrival, and only had a short wait for the room to be ready. We stayed in room 406, a twin room overlooking the harbour, which was clean and comfortable. The only drawback with the room was the lack of wi-fi (it is available on the ground floor in the lounge bar). Single room about the size of a prison cell, with rather a grubby bathroom. The whole hotel looked tired and depressing with a cooking smell everywhere. We have used Strathmore hotels for a number of years now. This was our first visit to Royal Hotel in Oban. The chain have spent a lot of money and time upgrading this hotel and I commend them for that. Our room 211 was spotless and had had a complete refurbishment so it is impossible to fault. The location & free parking was an important factor of booking this hotel for me. Can see the hotel is "tired" & in need of some updating but repairs to keep things going until that is done are fair. The hotel is old and has fallen into a bit of disrepair so it is now quaint and quirky (watch the uneven step on level 2). Of course rooms are private and everything was tidy, but by making use of the space you end up with odd room shapes and bathroom sizes. All works though. Location is right in the heart of downtown, so location is great. And of course it's great value for the money.

Staying here with a group, we arrived at the hotel and found our rooms. I love the character of these older hotels, but this one could use a bit of a freshening up. Other than that the rooms we ok and I got to spend a bit more time in the room than I planned as my allergies decided to act up on me during my stay. Like others, the lack of in-room Wi-Fi was a bit inconvenient, but it was reliable once you were in range, which was a plus over a few hotels we stayed at over the week in Scotland.

I do mind that the room 220 is immediately above the kitchen and there's nothing that can be done to cool it, despite a fan and open window. Great location excellent for train, bus and ferry and food was good but better in hotel restaurant, the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. It's a buffet breakfast which I'm not a big fan of, but it was better than most I've visited

Stayed at Royal Hotel, Oban for 4 nights. Hotel is in an excellent location, however the hotel rooms do need an upgrade. Bad television reception on all channels.I realise it is older property but this would make a big difference. Breakfast is good with a self service choice and offered tea or coffee and toast. I found you had to wait a while to be taken to your table and also waiting for tea/coffee and toast . Hotel is always busy with coach tours and only has one lift. The hotel is only le... Read more

First the good points. The hotel occupies a great position, right in the centre of the town, a 5 minute walk from train station and ferry terminal, close to all amenities. The staff are friendly and welcoming, especially the receptionists. There was, if you like that kind of thing, typical Scottish entertainment in the evenings - dancing & music. That said ... the accommodation is tired and in need of renovation. Our room, on the third floor, was a 'Classic Twin' which meant small, really small... Read more

We stayed at the Royal Hotel for two nights. The hotel is older and a little bit tired, but otherwise it is clean and comfortable. The room was a good size and the bathroom had recently been renovated. The room was quiet and we had a partial view of the harbour. We appreciated the hotel's location in the town. It is very easy to walk to just about anything in the town. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was provided with the room. It was a hot and cold buffet with lots of choices.... Read more

We had a family room on the very top floor. Lovely views and very clean. The breakfast was a buffet style cooked affair that was very tasty. The only thing that lets the place down from what we saw was the lift. Very small and only one available for a large volume of people. I took the stairs if I didn't have the kids with me but when I did the lift was my only option. Other than that I can't fault the place. Very friendly staff too!

Our rooms were more than adequate with comfortable beds, although no little extras in bathrooms i.e shampoo etc. But the rooms were quiet even though the hotel had a conference on the same evening. The staff were more than accommodating when we said we would have to leave before the start of breakfast and took our order for us to have an early one.

This is a large hotel, typical of its era. Very comfortable beds; rooms okay but not particularly modern or impressive but rates usually include a good breakfast. Great location if arriving by train, close to everything in town and to harbour but without sea views.

The Royal Hotel is quite central right around the corner if Oban station. The room/ bathroom was nice and clean. The only problem was that you couldn't really open the window so it got quite hot inside the room. That was especially annoying at night time. Breakfast was absolutely alright. The room itself was good, a reasonable size (for an old hotel) with a beautiful sea view and a window that opened. The bathroom was modern but tiny, and the shower was on an odd angle so got the floor soaking wet. The car park is tiny, so the high season might make parking very hard.
