Just love this place. Visited the hotel and enjoyed their delicious cuisine many times. Management and staff have always looked after their customers and continue to do so. Sad that we missed seeing the friendly owners Geoff & Gill again who have moved onto Cheshire but lovely to meet the new manager Phil who gave us an equally warm welcome ???

We recently spent our second short break in The West Arms. The location is just beautiful. The Ceiriog valley is outstanding for its natural beauty. We were blessed with blue-sky weather which brought out all the spring colours. The West Arms is charming, quirky and very well run (recently under new management). The rooms are all different. We stayed in The Middleton, which faces the road. There was no noise disturbance. The room was very comfortable although the shower could be a challenge for ... Read more

Went for a two night Travelzoo stay, without which we would never have discovered this lovely hotel break which has everything going for it; marvellous location, splendid room, en-suite with, bath, separate shower and lots of hot water at a good pressure, friendly and helpful staff, excellent food, provided locally with lovely tastes, good service, choice of a variety of public rooms. Had a lovely break.

An attractive looking building located in a small remote welsh village. The place is pleasantly decorated and has many historic features which help give it an "olde worlde" feel. Very pleasant welcome from the new owner who took us to a good sized room with wonderful views across the welsh hills. Comfortable bed and despite the noisy waterworks (it is an old building) we slept well. Bathroom was fine but no soap bar - only a dispenser on the wall which is too high up when using the bath. We have just returned from a three night stay at the West Arms. The location amongst the Berwyn hills is stunning, views and surrounding areas are amazing. The West Arms is very welcoming and food is delicious. The hotel, even taking into account that it is 16th century is very tired and in need of redecoration. The rooms were reasonably clean but I decided not to look too closely otherwise this would have spoilt a wonderful visit. All staff were lovely and helpful and Ed in particular should be... Read more

We took advantage of Travelzoo's voucher again and were certainly not disappointed in the food nor the hospitality. It was also a pleasure to meet the chef, Grant Williams.I realise that this is a period inn but our bathroom could have done with some updating. Also we had no hot water in the in the morning although it did re-appear after breakfast. Diolch am y croeso a'r bwyd.

A 2 night break at the West Arms for hubby's birthday. So relaxing the staff incredibly friendly. Rooms wonderfully clean, spacious and welcoming, couldn't wait to go to bed just to wake up to the view we had out of the window across the valley!! The food was exquisite and a special birthday cake was made for hubby's birthday - thank you Grant. We will be returning when we next get some time off together as we can't wait for another occasion!!!

This is the second time in 2 months myself and partner visited The West Arms, this time to celebrate his 50th Birthday. It didn't disappoint second time around, just wish we could have stayed longer. A great welcome, lovely and clean as before, fantastic setting and views, the food was amazing as remembered and the service very very good again. We will be back soon. Thanks to Phil and his team. X

What a shame we didn't have longer , a really quaint pub after some wandering about we found a bar towards the back of the building with the most comfortable chairs and even before we had really checked out said chairs a most pleasant young lady asked if she could bring drinks to our table , what simply marvellous service , a great but unfortunately far to short a visit . We aim to be back in the area November time and will be sure to put this pub on our list of places to revisit . Oh and on o... Read more

Great food and service as usual, the staff are always warm and friendly especially Ed who is quite a character. There are plenty things to do in the area, this time we cycled from Llangollen to Chirk on the canal tow path then visited the waterfall at Pistyll Rhaeadr the following day. Look forward to returning soon.

My husband and I have just spent 2 nights at The West Arms. We really enjoyed it. The rooms are comfortable and clean albeit a bit quirky - but the property does date from 1600 so that is to be expected. The staff were most welcoming and the service was excellent. The were several beers and lagers on offer two of which were cask ales. A fire was lit in the bar which made it very cosy. The restaurant was very traditional with an excellent menu and good quality food.

Went for a Groupon deal. A warm welcomb from the staff at check in. Our room (15) was really comfortable and overlooked the garden. The food is superb and the dining room is a lovely room to dine in. It is a quirky hotel with a nice snug area with an open fire, and a bar area you can eat in as well. Nothing is too much trouble for any of the staff and we shall certainly return.

I travelled with a group of 12 to Wales and had a night stay in the West Arms Hotel. When I did the booking online, the hotel requested my credit card no. and details and I'd pass this information to them for booking. When I checked out at the hotel, the staff requested payment for the 6 rooms we rented, and I told the hotel staff (obviously not a Welsh nor English for her poor spoken English) that the rent should have been charged in advance by card. Yet the staff told us that their hotel usual... Read more

A small hamlet among the Welsh hills that manages to accommodate two excellent hostelries! Ideal for a quiet few days, walking the hills, enjoying the wildlife and savouring the views, with the guarantee of a splendid meal and a convivial bar to relax in. It is a four hundred year old building so the emphasis is on character and charm more than style and functionality. However it fits perfectly into its setting. For a hotel that relies on visitors from beyond the area, a bit more help with f... Read more

Had a very enjoyable stay here in this romantic old inn. We stayed in the Eagles character room. A lovely large old room with exposed beams, a giant comfortable bed, uneven floors and doors and with a lovely large modern bathroom. The inn itself is very olde worlde containing many rooms where comfortable seating can be found. I was staying in the area in a cottage immediately round the corner from The West Arms. We did not have a table booked but popped in a little earlier before our time to ask if there were tables available. We were happily accommodated and asked if we wanted the bar or restaurant area. We opted for the restaurant which was very nicely set out. We had a beef roast and I have to say it was the nicest roast I have ever had. After a day walking around the beautiful area it was the best reward. Love... Read more

Such a beautiful place in a delightful setting. Pity about the welcome! There was none! We were not made to feel welcome in any way and the bar staff were positively sour! We stayed for one drink and were only too pleased to leave. There was a party going on and priority was given exclusively to those guests. We will not return but I am guessing that it won't matter to them anyway!

Where to start..my missus paid a decent whack for us to stay here instead of some travel lodge type place, frankly a total disappointment and utterly not worth the money. Old hotel, taking guests for Lord knows how long, charming you might think, alas decor looks very dated, room we were in had stained woodwork, mineral salting in the walls (get this stripped a coat or two of lime wash paint on it will sort it) scrapes and dings all over the place and I thought the decorative cobwebs and dead s... We stayed for two nights whilst attending an event in Llangollen. We had a very friendly welcome and were soon settled into our room which was very comfortable. The first night was very quiet but on the second night, with other guests in the adjacent room, we found it a little noisy. The bar serves good real ale, and the garden at the back has lovely views along a valley with the hills either side. It is a very peaceful place to sit and watch the sheep grazing on the hills. Our party of 4 adults (and 1 Chihuahua!) stayed at The West Arms from the 5th - 6th August. We originally chose this hotel due to its proximity to Llangollen (as we were attending an event at the Pavilion on the 6th August) along with the fact its dog-friendly - a huge bonus! As we were only due to stay for 1 night and the price was very reasonable (approx. £60 per adult and £8.50 for the dog), we didn't expect much from the hotel.. just a stop-over before a big day on the Saturday. We must write and say what a wonderful party we had at The West Arms Hotel to celebrate our Silver Wedding at the end of July (Saturday 30th July, 2016). Our family and friends are still coming back to us to say how much they enjoyed the occasion, the beautiful setting and the helpfulness of the Staff. What a gem - just a few miles from Llangollen, this is a beautiful old inn with lovely ales and superb food. Way above your average pub grub. The room we stayed in was steeped in history with a 4 poster bed. The staff are welcoming and highly attentive. All in all a lovely break in a breathtakingly picturesque part of Wales.

A 400 year old inn means character, wonky stairs, no lift & maybe low ceilings. It had all these and was lovely. The staff were very friendly but unfortunately the young ladies serving need more training if they're going to work in the bar! If you ask for a scotch & coke, you don't expect the girl to go scurrying off to ask the manager what scotch is! Also there was a lack on information in the room. Yes, the hotel does need some refurbishment but there are still some outstanding features about the West Arms. The location is perfect for exploring the nearby attractions by car, the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Chirk Castle to name but two. Want to visit somewhere that has the peace and quiet of the countryside with food that is so good it would rival any city based quality restaurant? Then stay at this hotel. Staff were exceptionally welcoming, the owner is really nice and the service was top notch. The food on offer, though, was the big selling point and the chef needs to have their feet nailed to the floor to stop them being poached by any other hotel or restaurant.
