I arrived on a cold, dark evening. The hotel was in the middle of a student campus and I was sent first to the student reception and then to Masson House to check in, both of which were incorrect. When I finally arrived, cold and a bit fed up, I was advised there was no room service, no bar and no restaurant. I was on a course and staying on my own so hadn't planned on going out. In order to obtain food I had to trek back out in the cold. The girl at reception managed to scrounge one glass of wi... Read more

In summary, though with no malice and clear good intentions, this is a badly renovated University run hotel that has none of the amenities or comforts a modern traveler should expect at this price point. I want to say from the outset that the hotel staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Unfortunately this hotel turned out to be very inconvenient and certainly not worth the $125USD and we checked out the next day and checked into a much better hotel. First the pros and cons: Pros: Very frie... Read more

My husband and I stay at this hotel for 7 nights which was chosen for convenience to attend a conference at the University. Per its photos, the building is uniquely beautiful and, as avid walkers, my husband and I found the proximity to Holyrood Park fantastic and didn't mind the 2km walk to the Royal Mile although there were lots of bus options right out front on Dalkieth Road. Also just across the road from the beautiful (and hightly rated) Salisbury Arms Hotel. However, at AUD$270per night, ... Read more

This is an old house which has served different purposes during the years. Nowadays it is a hotel and it is a hotel whith character. The rooms are a bit special since this house was not built as a hotel from start. Some rooms are really hidden away and you need to drag your luggage a bit in corridors and on stairs (no lift). Breakfast is great with a number of warm extras that is charged without extra costs. It is situated on a busy road, you can hear traffic "quite good", which also mean good t... Read more

My parents came to visit for the Edinburgh Marathon Festival and I booked them a room there to give it a change from Masson House (the other hotel in Pollock Halls, the uni campus) which was being renovated at the time of booking. The staff was very friendly but the main inconvenient was that it doesn't have its own reception and guests have to check in at Masson House (ok for us as I was familiar with the campus but might be a bit confusing for people who aren't, and considering that they coul... We were in Edinburgh for the first time and were going to the Tattoo (highly recommend going to see this). This hotel is situated on University campus but when we visited it was summer holidays so no students about. It is a 30 minute walk from the hotel to the Royal Mile, but across the road to the hotel you can get buses which run every few minutes into the city centre. It costs £1.60 per journey, but we bought a day rider ticket for £4.00 each every day which allows you unlimited rides on ... Read more

I stayed for one night, for work at the university. My room was a good size with a comfy bed and a nice bathroom. Good shower, lovely soap. It was quiet, I didn't see any other guests. There was a second small window with no curtain that let light in in the morning, but it didn't really matter as I had an eye blind. The breakfast was wonderful: lovely fruit followed by a full veggie Scottish, inc veggie haggis and a Quorn sausage. Yum! Not much else to say as I was literally only there for 11 ho... Read more

My partner and I visited the sainsbury green hotel in Edinburgh during a short leisure trip. The building itself is absolutely stunning. Original 18th century stone masonry is complimented by lavish interior wood carvings. The grounds are also beautiful and make for a relaxing stroll. The room was clean, comfortable and spacious with a huge shower room. The staff were friendly and very helpful. My only small gripes were that the reception is based in the Masson house part of the complex. This is... Read more

Bland like the house wine of an Indian suburban restaurant. The discount University of Edinburgh alumni qualifies for makes it almost worth while, although the catering probably wasn't fit for UN aid and returned to the John McIntyre Conference Centre.

I stayed at the hotel during a business trip to Edinburgh. It was the closest decent place to stay to my appointment. The hotel is located in a conferencing/events/university halls though a separate building. Check in was another building and that's where the restaurant was located. Breakfast was served within the hotel in the morning and the dining room was grand. I stayed in was on the top floor. It was clean, comfortable and well equipped. My only complaint was a shower which only drizzled r... Read more

I love the castle look and feel of the building. I think it's what attracted me to stay here in the first place. The room is very small, but probably most of the hotel in UK are. The room have the old house smell, which makes it quite eerie. The bathroom is spacious and clean. The breakfast spread is not bad either. It's a step above a continental breakfast. Because it's part of a university, concierge is in another building and appears to be serviced by students. To get to your room, there's a ... Read more

This hotel looks like a mini castle from the outside and is situated in quiet surroundings, about 25min walk from town. It is part of Edinburgh university campus and in close proximity to lecture halls and student halls. I feel this proximity is understated on their website. Though this didn't bother us, it may put others off who may be expecting not to be situated alongside this. Inside the hotel has a grand feel and a lovely spiral staircase with good views of arthurs seat. We stayed in a doub... Read more

I've stayed at this hotel before. I decide to book again as there was limited spaces in Edinburgh and this hotel had a discount deal on BUT they kept declining my payment as they realised that people would pay full amount at this time of year. The staff were rude, tried days to speak to someone on the phone. Even said the hotels service was terrible. As for my previous stay it was not worth the money. The pictures look good but not in person.

The first point of contact at a hotel is reception. The receptionist gives those first, all important, impressions and you are predisposed to enjoy a hotel if the reception is good. My experience was so good I felt I had to write about it. Neil (I actually asked his name) was immensely helpful with a sharp wit and seemed more than happy to answer the same question more than once - when dealing with fools like myself it is imperative! He certainly went the extra mile with us and made us feel ... Read more

Had a one night stay here on a business trip. It was a last minute booking and chosen because they have parking and are well placed in the city. It is situated adjacent to some of the university accommodation, and has a campus feel to it. The room I had was well equipped, but little cold at night because it is was on the ground floor of the old building. Would consider using again.

beautiful manor house hotel. gorgeous rooms. free parking and free wifi. staff were amazing. breakfast was tasty, lots of choice in the cold buffet, although not much on the plate when you order cooked breakfast. we were upgraded to a superior suite as our allocated room was being painted. only negative was that the plug in out huge bath didn't work so we couldn't use it, but there was a large shower so it was fine! also we arrived about 9pm and managed to take the last parking spot so maybe ear... My husband and I stayed at Salisbury Green for four nights during the Festival in August. The location is very convenient to the city, near Holyrood Park with frequent bus service across the street and many attractions within an easy walk. The hotel is situated on its own landscaped grounds as a part of the Edinburgh First Conference facility. On the outside, the hotel looks like a Victorian Mansion. But the rooms are very modern with the latest 'green' technology. We had a king room on the f... Read more

On arrival don't be confused by going onto the University campus the hotel is situated on the edge of the student accommodation blocks. The hotel is lovely it isn't suitable for anyone anyone who has difficulty getting upstairs as there is no lift and is covered over 3 floors. I booked a double room for myself & my husband and found a king size bed + single bed, wardrobe & desk with chairs & complimentary drinks tray, there was also a safe, iron, ironing board & trouser press in the room along w... Having read previous reviews we were a bit trepidatious about our stay but they could not have been more unfounded. Check in whilst in Masson house was efficient, parking was available for our hire car you get a free permit at the gate when arriving, the room was very nice and had period features like the rest of the building. The room was also spotless with a great bathroom and shower. Breakfast was very substantial. We will be back.
