Having read the reviews I didn't expect much but I still feel the above rating is honest! Firstly the room was huge (and strangely pink) which was a plus had I stayed for the full two nights When I arrived I was told breakfast was complimentary and asked if it was a cooked breakfast. I specifically asked this as was led to believe it was just sugary cereal and snack bars from the reviews. The receptionist said it was cooked so I thought great. Only to find in the morning it wasn't cooked at al... Read more

The worse hotel where I have ever been because it is an old place without the essential facilities. The furtniture both in the bar/reception and rooms are old and run-down they are even dirty and smelly. I moved in three rooms before to find hot water in the bathroom. Thus most of them are without this obvious facility. The bath towels are substituted just one in 3 nights. The breakfast is poor and they lie on web saying that it is continental. The manager was rude and impolite even if I had a s... Read more

The Ritz in Haymarket, Edinburgh is a great stay. Good location for Murrayfield and the city. You can walk to both easily. There is Haymarket train station about 3 minutes walk away. Bus and tram stops near by. Rooms are comfortable, but a little dated. The staff are friendly. For reasonable rates, The Ritz hits all the buttons.

We booked to stay for two nights over the weekend. The hotel was dated, unclean and the smell was so bad it was difficult to breathe. I felt unclean staying there but we had no choice as there were no other available hotels on Saturday night. We moved to the premier inn first thing on Sunday which cost us another £98 - but was worth every penny. The only good thing about the hotel was the friendliness of the staff at the bar.

A hotel that needs a revamp. Worn capets, overpowering smell within the public toilets adjacent to the bar, doors with some of the locks not working properly, and a public bar bar area that has seen better days

Absolutely disgusting, smell of cats urine throughout making it very difficult to breathe. Dirty room, hairs on sheet under a washed out duvet cover that also smelt. Lumpy mattress. Bath was filthy with "hair" in it. Carpet dirty and not vacuumed, blood like stain on the wall. Dated chipped, stained furniture. Chipped paint, cracks down the walls. To top it of no hot water. Felt i was absolutely filthy when i left after just one night. Not recommended.

After reading the reviews on here I didn't expect much of the hotel. Yes the hotel is dated but it is truly lovely place, the room was a great size and was very clean. Staff were great and did everything they could to help. It's in a good location especially for public transport. Would definitely return.

Can't believe I booked in hear without checking first !. First the good bits - good location in Haymarket, room cleaned and staff we spoke to were pleasant. The actual building could have been lovely but the Hotel in need of refurb !, the room we had needed it as the carpet was very stained, shower did not really work and decor, well, very pink (sheets/towels/drapes around four poster bed !!) bed squeeked with any movement. We're going to move but just decided to not spend anytime there so dr... Read more

The location of the hotel is excellent, a few minutes walk from Haymarket train station and a few minutes from the hustle and bustle of the new town. To walk to the old town takes about 15/20 mins. Breakfast wasn't included but they only serve a limited continental breakfast, they do however off an alternative ..turn left at the phone boxes for Dimitries (it was closed!) Our room was on the top floor, quite a lot of stairs to contend with but there is a cat book on one of the landings where you ... Read more

I popped in for an after work drink as I passed on my way home, the bar was very quiet with residents only popping in with their keys. I thought the prices were a bit high and there wasn't much atmosphere but this would be a great place to go if you wanted to do some extra work with a wee tipple.

A long weekend, 4 nights, in Edinburgh, Scotland UK. We stayed at B&B in Grosvernor street, which jokingly is called the Ritz. The place is friendly, with spacy rooms. two staircases with Scottish tartan carpet. Rooms are comfortable with tea and coffee making facilities. The breakfast is better than adequate, however, no yochurt. No cooked breakfast provided. The place is a bit dated but very adequate for our purpose and the name "the Ritz" is a bit of a joke.

We stayed here for one night. The building is an amazing building but as other comments desperate for a freshen up. Staff were helpful. Our rooms carpet was very stained and yes room could have been cleaner but bed was fine. Breakfast was not the best continental u could wish for. Cereal toast and pastries available. But pastries are not the best. The hotel did its job a base for the night and was cheap

An old rambling dog friendly hotel that's smells of urine in the public areas and is not very clean. My partner awoke with over 20 flea bites. Not happy ... Oh and the breakfast is really bad. It's directly opposite the Hilton so well located, but it's just not an option. Very disappointing

Hotel a bit tired but excellent location and clean enough. The price is very good for the middle of Edinburgh many attractions walking distance. Parking a bit of a problem at busy times. Would stay here again.

Keeping in mind this is my first accommodation in Scotland and I'm not sure what the comparitive standards are yet, I guess you get what you pay for. This is cheap and clean and about half an hour's walk from the castle. It is also very near the city tram line. It smells a bit funky at first as it is pet friendly, something we didn't realise when booking, but the top floor where we stayed smelled fresh. It is an old building so the rooms are not what you'd call modern and there are no lifts and... Read more

The staff were very friendly, but weren't very good at cleaning the rooms. Our room hadn't been hoovered, and the duvet didn't even fit the bed. We hoped the room would be hoovered after our first nights stay, but this was not the case. Someone had been in to make the beds and refill the soaps, but only did half a job by leaving dirty mugs and not refilling the coffee and tea tray. Our stay was brief and cheap, which was for the best

Stayed here for one night for the Fringe, knew it would be basic given the price but oh me i did not expect how bad. This has to be the worst place i have ever stayed, had it not been the Fringe and accommodation difficult to find i would have left. The place smells as soon as you enter, it is in dire need of an overhaul as it is so dated, paintwork is shoddy and nothing matches. It is in dire need of a good clean, with dust sitting thick and carpets stained. They provide a continental breakf... Read more

The young staff are very friendly and helpful, but it's obvious there aren't enough of them and that they are obviously paid peanuts for working their butts off. The hotel itself is very dated and in need of some TLC and a good spring clean. It has an unpleasant musty smelly throughout. Very good tea and coffee facilities in the rooms though. Plenty of tea bags and coffee and enough milk to keep you going. No wifi in the rooms, but you can use it in Betty's Bar. TV with freeview in the room, wh... Read more

Me and my mum booked this hotel as we were going to Edinburgh for one night for the fringe. When I saw the room I nearly cried. I was considering just getting the train home and if we had to stay in that room I would have went home. Our room was at the very top of the building, the hall and stairs and corridors are in desperate need of refurbishment. When we got to our room it was hideous. Nothing matched, the carpet was dirty, the furniture was old. Even the kettle was filthy and still had wate... Read more

Stayed three nights for Fringe festival. Reading the reviews before our stay we were really concerned but we had a great time. The hotel did not have a bad smell when you walk in as some reviewers say. In fact they had a lovely candle on when we arrived. Our room (2) was huge, great for two girls to have the space to get ready. The kettle I thought could be replaced with a better one and there was dust present on the radiator by the window. The furniture is dated and the bathroom is a 70's gr... Read more

This hotel has to be the worse place i ever stayed in,overly priced and stunk of dogs the minute you walked in. Theres no lift in this hotel and we were located on the top floor. Damp walls shabby curtains and dirt around the bath. Breakfast on weekends was only served till 930 which was continental which we didnt make use off the place was so filthy.Overall a terrible experience for not a cheap rate !!

A basic hotel. Ok. I got an early check in. The Scottish lady was nice. Also the Irish guy from Limerick. One of the days the water was scorching hot to take a shower so had to use the bath instead. Also wifi doesn't work in the rooms. It can only be accessed downstairs in the bar or lobby. Overall good for what you pay for. STV Channel on the television also has bad reception.

We've been 2 days, and we must you recommend that you shouldn't go here because it's a very dirty hotel, the room had a lot of hairs on the floor, also had a lot of dust for all room. Inside of room we had a exit emergency gate! We had never seen before in a hotel room! The bathroom had humidities. We wanted to go before but we had payed the two nights. 3 stars hotel? i dont think so.... Don't come here if you don't wanna throw your money

Honestly the place is vile. Online pictures were deceiving and I was left massively disappointed. I expected to turn up to a huge room with a vintage quirky USP the hotel try to pull off. But there's that and then there's this. A vile outdated shambles. We were thrown in a box room, barely any room for us to move once the suitcases were on the floor. We struggled to move around the bed - if you're given room 20, just give up there and then. There's trying to look old, and then there's wall... Read more

First, the good. Location-wise, this hotel is a great location, opposite a Hilton Hotel. Go there instead. You would think that a hotel called the Ritz would be, at least Ritzy. It was more pitsy. The pictures were very misleading, decoration was outdated and vile. My parents room contained a brown stain on the floor roughly the size and shape of a dead body, when complaining about this in the morning, the Lady claimed to have no knowledge of it. Hot water was non-existent, the shower was so l... Read more

Bathroom was like an icebox, dust all down back of radiators, disgusting. Wallpaper falling off walls, paint falling of the ceilings. Had to walk 49 steps up and down to my room. No lifts, ironing board was so small could only iron socks. Rust round the bath handles, just the pits.

Frayed at the edges, last decorated in the 20th century, but great value, polite staff and huge rooms, so who cares? Quite well located as well in the west end near Haymarket station. Would be perfect for international rugby.
