I once stayed in student accommodation in Liverpool which smelled of wet dogs and all the plaster fell off the wall during the night, as we entered the room at Brittania Edinburgh, I longed to be back there. It's filthy, noisy and broken. A more pleasurable experience would be for you to gargle a pint of wasps. Shameful.

Unfriendly staff had an issue as soon as we arrived when asked to look after our bags until we could check in, window in the room wouldn't shut. Room dated loads of noise from the road and other guests. We had a fire evacuation in the early hours of the morning and by looking at the other guests it was easy to work out it was a false alarm. The hotel was packed full of stagg do's. We had booked in for two nights, checked out after one and booked somewhere else. i wouldn't stay here again if you ... Read more

The household staff and many of the wait staff were wonderful. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for the desk staff. The property ... well, read the other reviews. Tired, run down, sad condition. They must have replaced the headboard in my room at some point in the past because they did not paint around the new one. The tub had remnants of previous non-slide stickers and outline of a long ago mat on tub floor. Used the bathmat they provided to cover up the unsightly mess. I brought slip... Read more

I decided to take a chance and book a "secret hotel", I was fairly sure from the clues on the booking that I knew where I was going, after booking and paying I received the email advising I would be staying in the Britannia, OMG, my heart sank, I had read the awful reviews on this hotel and passed up booking this previously at £35 for the night and had just paid £52.00. Parking was a bit of a pain having to phone up and was a bit confusing as the recorded message said you had to get a residence permit, when I asked at hotel they had no idea. If you intend staying here - a) take evidence of your booking and b) do NOT let them put you in a windowless basement room. I was in Scotland on business and picked up a bug on my travels. When I arrived I was very ill, with a fever of 40 degrees & just wanted a bed for the night. However the hotel had lost my booking & despite me showing them evidence of this on my mobile, the aggressive reception staff would not believe me. I have recently returned from this hotel after a one night stay and would not return again. The first impression I had of the hotel was fairly postive; it is situated in a good location, parking is available at £5 per 24-hours and the reception staff are friendly and helpful. However, I was given a room on the lower ground floor with no window which I found quite claustrophobic and hot (being June) but didn't ask for another room as it was only for one night and I was travelling solo. I have been deliberating how to rate this hotel. On the one hand we booked a cheap, no frills place close to the center of Edinburgh that had somewhere we could park the car. Based on this I should give 5 stars because it meets the specification. However, in reality whilst I wasn't expecting luxury, or even anything special, this hotel needs a refurb because it's just plain tired. It used to be a travel lodge and it's as if they sold it to avoid the maintenence bill. Clean sheets but lumpy, har... Read more

I stayed here one night on business. I can't say what the rooms were like ABOVE ground with Windows, but the ones below are stuffy, dark, and noisey. Yes my room seemed to have been refurbished but it was inbetween the fire door and chemicals closet. You barely get TV channels, service or internet down there. I spend a lot of my life in hotels and this has to be one of the worst I've ever stayed at. Generally, when I'm traveling for fun (like this trip, as opposed to work), I plan to be away from my hotel as much as possible, and am very (very!) low-maintenance about what I need. I'd much rather save my $$ for doing things in the city rather than on a fancy hotel. That being said, this place is terrible. We paid almost $100/night and were sorely disappointed. This hotel is bad. The rooms are really bad, beds are not good, old carpet with stains in it, bath towels with stains in it and the room was not clean. Breakfast erea small with few chairs. In the breakfast it self there was no cheese, no fresh fruits and the staff was rude when you was asking for somthing or you were in their way. The placement is not good, far away from everything. I will never stay there again and will not recommend it to anyone.

My husband and myself stayed here on a short three day visit to Edinburgh. I had read some reviews of this hotel after we booked and although many were very negative, I decided to keep an open mind. Upon arrival to reception I queried the room we had been given as it was not as described in the booking, my query was met with a very brusque comment from the foreign speaking lady on reception who informed me that I should have put any requests on the comments section at the time of booking, she di... I stayed here with 2 friends for the weekend. I had read the reviews; they were average but I wanted to judge for myself. Upon arrival, we received a warm welcome. Our rooms were clean and tidy. My room was a double and had no window but that didn't bother me. However, it was quite warm with no fan to cool me down but I got over it quickly. The food was absolutely beautiful. It was all you can eat food. The breakfast was £7.95 & the dinner was £10.95. The choice was vast and there was nothing ... Read more

We were sent to this hotel by a flight operator after our flights got cancelled. We turned up to a dirty hotel, which hadn't been hoovered properly in years. Very old fashioned and very basic. Window wouldn't shut so very noisy and cold. Walls painted bold blue and green colours. No toiletries provided in the bathrooms, and damp marks in the shower. In a friend's room, very suspicious marks on cushions, bed legs different sizes, table lamp didn't work, window frame was broken so cold wind comi... Read more

We stayed her during the Edinburgh Tattoo, when hotels are hard to find and expensive. We paid over $400 CAD for two nights at this hotel, I used hotwire.com to book it - I will only use them for car rentals in the future. When we arrived at our room was ready, great! When we arrived at the room it was VERY dated and had a musty smell to it. The hotel has no telephones in the rooms - not a big deal unless you have problems with your room. Our toilet would not flush - my husband went to the ... Read more

Dirty and noisy. Bathroom was very dirty, hairs everywhere, in bath, up the wall, which had stains too! Toilet seat didn't stay up, lights didn't work, hairs in bed. Fire alarm test going off without warning! Rooms were either freezing or boiling hot, with dodgy radiators or no air con. Website says it has parking, true but you have to pay, not included with room. Friends bathroom had WEE in the room already when they arrived! Really bad hotel. Arrived around 11:30 pm the night manager was there to greet. He was exceptionally rude, actually muttered "oh bloody hell" when other guests arrived. When asking him a question about parking. He stopped me half way through, did not answer my question and proceeded to ignore me. Parking is not included and that is not made very clear. The wifi doesn't reach around the hotel. We were placed in what I can only presume was a basement. There was damp and holes in the walls. For th... Read more

I had the misfortune of staying here and having my evening meal included, firstly the room was dirty with thick dust along all the edges, a recently patched up hole in the wall which had been done pretty poorly and not repainted, a broken headboard, shoe prints on the pillows and a bathroom in the need of a good deep clean. the staff were friendly enough however i was a little shocked at the evening meal when I gave my room number and was told i couldn't sit in the main lobby dining area and mus... Ohh, where do I start! Well basically we stayed in Edinburgh this weekend (07/10/2016) with National Holidays and had the misfortune of having this hotel as our chosen hotel for the evening. Upon arrival, the usher gave us wrong directions to our room. We were staying rom 415 on the 4th floor, the usher told us to go to the 1st Floor. Once we eventually got to our room, we were mortified. The room was freezing as the window had been left open for god knows how long. The did a shody job of hoveri... Read more

Well I have read other reviews and I cannot for the life of me imagine what people expect for £33 pp inc breakfast. Having stayed in a number of Britannia hotels in the past I have to say this is by far the best. True it is not the Dorchester but dI repeat what do you expect for £33. It is close to the centre, the food was ok and the staff were friendly. The room was basic but adequate. Check in was fast and without drama and we found all the amenities of the city within a 10 minute drive. Job... Read more

Fine it was cheap and you get what you pay for, the bathroom was small and functional, the hotel itself is a little off the beaten track but still walking distance from Princes Street, it wasn't all bad. However, we did book a room with a double bed and what we got was two single beds, singles covers and all, merely pushed together... Pushed together underneath a very powerful very loud aircon outlet, it was broken, noisy, cold and there was no way to turn it off. Enquiring at the desk we were t... Read more

I was skeptical about having a room without a window, but the air con was second to none and it was big enough not to feel claustrophobic. The decor was minimalist, but posh looking, and the bed was king size, which was a pleasant surprise. We also had an iron, ironing board and hair dryer, which all came in handy. The hotel is a short walk from the train station and has great links to Princes Street - we even walked there in 15 minutes. I definitely would stay again and recommend it.

We chose this hotel as it is not too far from Haymarket Station. It was a mistake. Although the restaurant looked okay (we ate away). and the staff, especially the shift managers, were super, the rooms were extremely tired and lacking in any homeyness. The shower curtains were mildewed, the bath was old and had seen better days. The windows couldn't be opened. Badly in need of refurbishment! I chose this because of good experiences in other Britannia hotels, but would not stay again.

Recently stayed at the hotel for one night, it was cheap and fairly clean. We stayed out of the hotel so can't comment on the restaurant or bar but seemed nice enough. When we came to leave in the morning packing the car, a lady cleaning the public areas overheard me saying I was in need of a brew. She went inside and made me a coffee for me to take on my travels, giving me a map of places to visit and being really helpful. Think her name was Angela. So thanks :)

We had a great bedroom. Modern reception/dining room. Lovely staff. Britannia hotels are cheap and good value for money without food incl. breakfast buffet ok. Evening buffet could do better! Located opposite museum of modern art and round the corner from cathedral. Within walking distance of 'downtown' Edinburgh. If you expecting 5* accommodation for 1* prices then you'll be disappointed but if you accept it for what it is - perfectly acceptable hotel in an ideal spot, you'll be fine!!!

The room we had was spacious and had a wet room bathroom which was handy for my disabled wife. It had a seat in the shower for the use off if you could not stand. The room was larger than a lot of places I have stayed at. The only downside to the room was that it had no drawers and wardrobe, we literally lived out of the suitcase for 5days. For what we paid we couldn't complain. Our room was cleaned daily with fresh towels. Food was good with a wide range of choice. Breakfast on par with other more expensive hotels we've visited. We found the staff helpful and polite. Great location short walk into the city. Yes the hotel is tired and needs a refurb but it wouldn't be that cheap to stay in then. You get what you pay for and as we stayed for more than one night I would've complained if our room had been dirty.

The layout is a bit odd as it seems to have been extended several times - easy to lose your bearings in. The room was ok, clean and well stocked, but a bit lacking in furniture. This hotel was so unpleasant we considered sleeping on a friends sofa instead. First of all we were checked into a "smoking room" which smelled disgusting. These are not legal in the United Kingdom so instantly we could tell that this place was a bit dodgy. The room was over 100 pounds and made a travelodge look five star. The bathroom was so flooded that it had spread through the carpet in the main room. When we went to complain the receptionist really didn't care and we didn't even receive an ... Read more

Nice touches included the kettle and good selection of drinks and the tv with plenty of channels...lucky because the wifi would not work in my room which was really annoying! This is quite central in Edinburgh but you need to know where you are going - if that makes sense. It is not the easiest place for a stranger to find. Parking is very difficult and if you do find a place that will add £5 per day to your costs of staying here. There are not many spaces. The worst things about this place is that it stinks of smoke. If it advertised itself as a budget hotel I would have been very pleasantly surprised. I was a fairly underwhelmed by this hotel when I stayed here with friends in October 2016. It's about 10 minutes walk from Haymarket and if you have lots of luggage you will struggle to walk it. You will need a map too. Once inside, the hotel is very basic. Don't expect luxury. For some of the rooms don't expect windows either. My room and bathroom was a reasonable size, clean and tastefully decorated although being on the ground floor it had no window, which brings me to my main gripe with this hotel.
