I once stayed in student accommodation in Liverpool which smelled of wet dogs and all the plaster fell off the wall during the night, as we entered the room at Brittania Edinburgh, I longed to be back there. It's filthy, noisy and broken. A more pleasurable experience would be for you to gargle a pint of wasps. Shameful.

Unfriendly staff had an issue as soon as we arrived when asked to look after our bags until we could check in, window in the room wouldn't shut. Room dated loads of noise from the road and other guests. We had a fire evacuation in the early hours of the morning and by looking at the other guests it was easy to work out it was a false alarm. The hotel was packed full of stagg do's. We had booked in for two nights, checked out after one and booked somewhere else. i wouldn't stay here again if you ... Read more

The household staff and many of the wait staff were wonderful. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for the desk staff. The property ... well, read the other reviews. Tired, run down, sad condition. They must have replaced the headboard in my room at some point in the past because they did not paint around the new one. The tub had remnants of previous non-slide stickers and outline of a long ago mat on tub floor. Used the bathmat they provided to cover up the unsightly mess. I brought slip... Read more

I was looking for a hotel in Edinburgh, a last minute booking but everywhere was booking up fast and prices rising! I decided to take a chance and book a "secret hotel", I was fairly sure from the clues on the booking that I knew where I was going, after booking and paying I received the email advising I would be staying in the Britannia, OMG, my heart sank, I had read the awful reviews on this hotel and passed up booking this previously at £35 for the night and had just paid £52.00. Arrived with 10mth baby and asked if we could check in a bit earlier (2hours), staff didn't even check on the computer or offer to hold bags. We walked into town which was about 20mins. Parking was a bit of a pain having to phone up and was a bit confusing as the recorded message said you had to get a residence permit, when I asked at hotel they had no idea. When we finally checked in, and got into the room there was no cot despite it having been requested on booking. The room was large ... Read more

If you intend staying here - a) take evidence of your booking and b) do NOT let them put you in a windowless basement room. I was in Scotland on business and picked up a bug on my travels. When I arrived I was very ill, with a fever of 40 degrees & just wanted a bed for the night. However the hotel had lost my booking & despite me showing them evidence of this on my mobile, the aggressive reception staff would not believe me. I travel all the time & I knew I had a booking so I wouldn't budge. I ... Read more

We (my friend with a disability & in a wheelchair with an Assistance Dog, my sister & I) stayed at the Brittania on 30 May 2016. The GBP10.00 for the buffet supper has to be paid before you eat & proof has to be given in the restaurant. Filling the empty dishes takes a while. The rooms are clean & comfortable. However my friend who had a wet room was lucky enough to get away without injury. I have recently returned from this hotel after a one night stay and would not return again. The first impression I had of the hotel was fairly postive; it is situated in a good location, parking is available at £5 per 24-hours and the reception staff are friendly and helpful. However, I was given a room on the lower ground floor with no window which I found quite claustrophobic and hot (being June) but didn't ask for another room as it was only for one night and I was travelling solo. Had no choice on hotel accommodation. It wasn't awful, just ok. Wifi is very spotty at hotel. With traveling abroad that's a major thing you need today to stay connected with family and friends back home. Room needs some touch up with wallpaper being ripped in spots.

I have been deliberating how to rate this hotel. On the one hand we booked a cheap, no frills place close to the center of Edinburgh that had somewhere we could park the car. Based on this I should give 5 stars because it meets the specification. However, in reality whilst I wasn't expecting luxury, or even anything special, this hotel needs a refurb because it's just plain tired. It used to be a travel lodge and it's as if they sold it to avoid the maintenence bill. Clean sheets but lumpy, har... Read more

I stayed here one night on business. I can't say what the rooms were like ABOVE ground with Windows, but the ones below are stuffy, dark, and noisey. Yes my room seemed to have been refurbished but it was inbetween the fire door and chemicals closet. You barely get TV channels, service or internet down there. The noise of clanging and the sound coming from the "vent" we're horrible. If you stay here, make sure you're above ground.

I spend a lot of my life in hotels and this has to be one of the worst I've ever stayed at. Generally, when I'm traveling for fun (like this trip, as opposed to work), I plan to be away from my hotel as much as possible, and am very (very!) low-maintenance about what I need. I'd much rather save my $$ for doing things in the city rather than on a fancy hotel. That being said, this place is terrible. We paid almost $100/night and were sorely disappointed. Not good, I couldn't sleep because they have an emergency light inside the room that is impossible to switch off. Besides that, as it was no windows and the room was a bit hot, was no way to get it a bit of air or cool down. Also the bathroom has no extractor for the humidity, plus the curtain on the bathroom was a bit orange of old. Also there are three steps for the bathroom, easy to fall also because the light switch is not close to the bathroom door, is next to the entrance door. A good thin... Read more

Stayed here for work in mid July, the price is very good, however rooms are very basic. What I did like is that they have an iron in the rooms and I was able to give my shirts the once over but the bathroom despite being huge I found the toilet roll holder about 3 metres away from the toilet which was quite odd. The location was good with it being less than a mile from Princes Street. I would recommend if looking for a cheap base for a night or 2.

Our logic was "We'll only be in the hotel to sleep and eat breakfast, so it doesn't matter that much - plus, if we save money on accommodation, we can do more in the city". Terrible Idea. We were only looking for a single nights' accommodation in Edinburgh during our recent trip and on that basis, the Britannia Hotel Edinburgh is an adequate three star hotel. We waited a good 15 minutes in line to check-in, a point made more frustrating by the fact the check-in process was being handled by a single staff member while two others stood behind the desk talking among themselves.
