My husband and I stayed for one night in May. The location is beautiful, we wanted to enjoy a round of golf but the weather wasn't permitting. Next time! The spa facilities were clean however the pool was freezing and didn't feel heated at all, so I gave that a miss but everything else was super. The room service was good and when we dined in the main restaurant we were looked after by Dominique who was a super host. He was attentive and super friendly and made us feel right at home. We stay here every year for a couple of nights when we attend a Charity Golf Event. This is a great Hotel, we always look forward to staying every year, it is in a beautiful spot, perfect for the Golfers but also good for a Spa Day or just a great place to relax. They organise our event so well each year, all the food is good and the breakfast choices exceptional. They cater well for the large numbers and the bars are always well staffed. Although the hotel is of high a quality the evening dinner had a small menu and didn't cater for children. The breakfast was nice however, once again, the selection was small. The rooms were comfortable and the decor was nice, and as we had 2 rooms, I was able to check them both and the carpets smelt awful in both rooms even my children commented on that. The service from the staff was very good, very attentive. May use hotel again as a second choice.

Having been on a few golf weekends at places like this, I'd say Stoke by Nayland is one of the better resort/hotels of its type, but it still has a few flaws. The good: polite staff, rooms that are a decent size with large comfortable beds, marshals out on the golf courses to keep play flowing, the wifi is good, and there's an excellent breakfast. The not so good: the evening meal menu is quite pricey and whilst the food is nicely presented it's not great in terms of either quantity or quality (... Read more

Lovely hotel in the middle of nowhere - so don't expect to stay in contact with your mobiles. Totally relaxing and enjoyable break. Staff helpful and friendly with a few going over and above their duties to make you feel welcome - especially Michael in the bar who was a hit with a few in our group. Bar prices reasonable and matched normal pub prices so was nice not to be ripped off. Food is delicious and although our party was on a set menu for a supplement it was possible to upgrade to a st... Stayed here overnight on a golf break. Played the Constable course (twice) which was a fair challenge. Generally speaking the course was well maintained, tee boxes a little cut up but with the footfall of golfers I expected as much. At first look the greens appeared a little woolly but they played well. Fairway markers could be a little more defined. 9 lads on our regular golf trip and thought we would return to this venue having been twice before ( although not for 4 years ). In round terms the whole place seems to have slipped from what it was. The rooms were OK , staff were friendly but there were a couple of areas that let it down. Firstly the catering , the package "deal" had a very limited menu and we had to choose in the morning what we wanted to eat in the evening. Firstly, no venue can run without its staff, they are the most valuable asset who represent the whole experience to its guests. Every member of staff we came into contact with, front desk, restaurant, golf & t... Read more

I came here with the in-laws and my bf for a meal on Saturday night. I had only ever eaten in the bar before, so the restaurant was a first. I started with the parfait and it was lovely and fresh. Next 3 of us had steak, all were cooked perfectly and probably the best steak I've had in a while. The best course was the pudding. I have the "Chocolate" and it was superb! Felt as though I was eating something from masterchef, so much attention to detail.

This trip was booked as an early ten year anniversary present for my wife who is 34 weeks pregnant. I was a tad diassapointed that no effort was made to acknowledge our anniversary - not even a note or couple of chocolates in the room which some hotels do for special occasions. Firstly the staff, check in and spa were all great although it was surprising not to get robes without leaving a deposit (this was not explained when we arrived at the spa). The spa was quite busy the next day as there h... Read more

I have reserved a room in the hotel via groupon: check in on sat and check out Sunday, unfortunately my car got broken on sat so I've called the hotel asking if I could book for another day, they confirmed that this was possible but I had to book for other days, so I did! On Sunday morning I have received a call from a woman that wasn't really nice, she told that what have confirmed with the girl the day before couldn't be done as the restriction on Groupon! The worst thing if this was told me o... Read more

My husband and I had our renewal of vows here in July 2011 and it was absolutely wonderful. The staff at Stoke by Nayland Hotel were fantastic and we had such a memorable and amazing day. The room we held the service is one lovely and the room that we had our reception in was fantastic and airy. We had a lunch time meal and then an evening reception and could not fault the lovely food. We had our photographs taken outside on the balcony and then down on the lawn area, over looking part of th... Read more

This was an enjoyable two night stay. The hotel was fully up to top standards with a large, air conditioned room (not all rooms have it) with ample clothing space and a really well designed bathroom (with no leaks from the shower, unlike at many top hotels!) There was space for a mini-bar but one wasn't provided - strange. The key cards were very sensitive to magnetic intrusion, both mine had to be replaced. Service was excellent and as there are only two floors no waiting for the lift, etc. ... Read more

Stayed here recently for an event that was been held in hotel. On arrival at reception it was very slow , the girl that served us was not very happy and spoke so fast her well rehearsed lines that we had to ask cleaner where our room was while hunting! However the restaurant/cafe staff were wonderful , very helpful , friendly and went out of way to meet our needs . Lady running restaurant very efficient ,we sat outside and relaxed before our evening doo. Our friends had massage in the spa and sa... Read more

My husband surprised me with a spa day, I had been here with the girls before however theyno longer know the meaning of what a spa day means to relax unwind and chill out. Unprofessional wouldn't recommend and that was my last visit - very disappointed as my first experience was 10/10 this time round I beg to differ. Gutted

Rooms are average but hotel has excellent facilities and staff. Bar, Spa and restaurant prices are reasonable. Golf courses are both very good. Quite hilly. Two testing 200yd+ Par 3's on the Constable Course, over water, off the white tees. Enjoyed the stay.

A modern hotel with very comfortable bedrooms, excellent facilities that will cater for different occasions. I was on business and enjoyed the breakfast each morning, I didn't have time to make use of the gym or swimming pool, but used one the golf courses, but both are suitable for all abilities of the game. Attentative, friendly staff and I would recommend this hotel if you are visting the Colchester area.

This hotel is in a beautiful part of the country and there are some lovely villages around and some nice walks. I have been told by my husband and father that the golf courses were excellent. However the rooms while large were so stuffy that it was impossible to sleep. The restaurant served an incredibly fussy menus with strange and unnecessary flavour combinations to an average standard. Decor in the restaurant was very 'Essex' - not really my thing but at least they had tried to make an eff... Read more

Recently stayed for a wedding and it's a great venue with nice food, but as far as staying for the hotel side of things - very average. Room is large, but bed not that comfy and is beginning to show its age. Poor shower as well. On the plus side, the golf course is great, the lodges are amazing if you're staying in that section and the buffet breakfast was delicious!

I stayed at the hotel for a wedding I was attending with my wife and family. The hotel room was excellent as were the spa facilities. Rooms were large, clean and modern with a very big king size bed. The spa had a nice pool, a gym and jacuzzi, which. I used. There may have been other bits but I did not use them. The drinks at the bar were fairly expensive but not too bad considering it is a hotel. Where the hotel loses marks is breakfast. We had breakfast included with the room and it was buffet... Read more

Arrived Friday afternoon to this lovely hotel. The reception staff quickly and efficiently got us to our rooms and from then on the whole weekend was a whirl of activity. The room was large, clean and the bed was lovely and comfortable. My only slight criticism is that the furniture was slightly austere which gave the room a general feeling of coldness despite a great radiator warming the room. No pictures or feminine touches made it feel more like a travel lodge rather than a spa hotel which in... Read more

When we arrived for afternoon tea our booking had somehow got lost but they were suitably apologetic. The dining room is rather too large and impersonal for afternoon tea but the service was fine and the tea reasonably priced and slightly better than I expected. The sandwiches were a weak point, not delicate enough for an afternoon tea and insufficient flavour. Cakes were nice and scone was light (though I think better without currants). Lovely view. Would not be my first choice but might go aga... Read more

My friend and I have just returned from an overnight spa break at the Stoke by Nayland. We opted for the Sheer Indulgence day. This consisted of three treatments, lunch and an overnight stay in the hotel. The treatments were lovely, with very professional therapists. The velvet chardonnay hammam treatment was the highlight of our day. Two course lunch was pre-booked when we got there and was prepared at our chosen time. There was a little bistro area where you could order drinks and snacks... Read more

Afternoon tea was an equally enjoyable experience, where staff enthusiasm, passion and service surpassed all expectation. The setting is stunning. Will definitely return.

Nice but on arrival the kettle wasn't working in my room & I had to ask for the window to be open--it was stuck. I was with a group, the menu was nice but Vegetarian main course was not. Two evenings out of four it was rice & cauliflower which I refused. I asked for something else & was given the lunch menu which had some really good Vegetarian dishes so chose from there. Who on earth would want to eat rice & cauliflower?

On achieving the age at which HMG pays you a pension I got to choose where the family would go to celebrate. I selected two of the large lodges overlooking the golf course. I decided that we would play golf on the Saturday. I decided we would have dinner in the hotel restaurant on Saturday night. Everything went according to plan. The lodges are exemplary in design, location and fit-out. The star of the show was the Lodge Porter who could not be more helpful. We ate en famille on the Friday ni... Read more

Twelve of us booked 2 lodges for a girlie weekend to celebrate special birthdays - we ranged in age from my 88 year old Mum to my 21 year old niece and had the most wonderful time made special by the fantastic staff. The lodges themselves are perfect - really well equipped with everything you need for catering as well as being spotlessly clean - with wonderful huge bathrooms with tons of hot water and fluffy towels. Lovely location with fantastic views of the golf course. Spa kept very clean & tidy with lovely facilities. The room was a double overlooking the golf course, a good size bed but the bathroom was in desperate need of an update & a clean. Very disappointing. We chose to eat in the bar in the evening and we were presented with poor quality food, not cooked properly and very little flavour. A cold, grey, and drizzling afternoon, so we decided to have an outing for tea at Stoke by Nayland Hotel. Just starting to be the build up to Christmas, and the decor at the entrance put us into the right mood, as we walked downstairs to the pool and spa area. We ordered our teas and scones from a very cheerful assistant, and whilst waiting read the Sunday papers in a very calm atmosphere.
