Arrived 12 midnight by taxi from Hong Kong to Kaoshiung with pre-booked hotel for appointment in Tainan by host. I did not know they offered free pick up from airport so we took taxi for NT175. Probably need to call or email ahead. No problem, but could not find booking in name, then found host name and we relaxed. Were charged by hotel with our credit card and English was not good at midnight, so we went with flow and were very tired. Took key and elevator was a relief since we had two bags and two backpacks. Noted hotpot and teabags in lobby with shelf library in Chinese of newspapers and tour books near the round couch.
Room is barely big enough for two people, double bed, desk one chair, tv on wall and lounge at entrance side and phone. No closet, just hanging area above built in bookcase with hangers, but clean and no bugs. But we could smell smoke coming from somewhere. Called to desk since I am asthmatic. They could not change us to another room, were fully booked. No window to crack open because NO WINDOWS. I started to panic and husband turned off the aircon. Oh, much better, not so much smoke smell. Front desk brought air purifier with hepa filter and ion cleaner. Much better, I could breath and since tired, prepped for bed in tiny bathroom with no bathtub, only shower- hot water and pressure fine. Shampoo and liquid gel dispenser and all other usual amenties provided with one large towel, two small towels and medium towel. No full length mirror, just two mirrors ... one over sink and one over desk next to TV. Suitcase rack for one person, so used lounge for second suitcase. Wifi was ok after we got the password. No noise so did not hear anything until 8 when the cleaning staff started moving and vacum near by. Small frig, two water, two coke and two coffee1n3 style packet, hot pot and four teabags, 2 ceramic mugs on tray with stir sticks. Did not turn on tv. Hairdryer worked, requested iron and got Phillips steam and small iron board at front desk. All three plugs in room are two prong US style.
Power breakfast had Chinese noodles, Stir fry pork and mushroom with onion, scrambled eggs, hot dog sausage with french fries, steamed cabbage, stir fried greens and all the things you put in sweet potato or rice porridge, pickles, peanuts, sweet fried tofu, shredded dried pork, hundred year old egg boiled pieces, etc, etc, Had brown bread for toaster, and white bread sweet buns... lettuce, corn, mashed potato salad and two dressings for Japanese breakfast, jiaosa (fried pork dumplings) and soy sauce, chilli, vinegar, and sesame sauce. Had juice machine from concentrate, fresh pineapple sliced - really sweet, and an expresso coffee machine which offered black, latte, mocha and hot chocolate and hot water for more tea. (no milk(little plastic whitener), no cereal except for rice and sweet potato porridge) margarine, red jelly, and peanut butter offered for breads. It was plentiful and varied home cooking style and for a buffet in a small hotel, it was fine.
Overall, for 50.00 US for two people, it is a good price and close to airport for early morning or late night flight arrival or early departure, but I would not want to stay here for a day trip if staying at the hotel. If the room had a window it would be a three, but on the top floor and no window, is strange to me, and also no bathtub. If it was a standard room on the lower floor, it would not surprise me. If you are staying in Tainan go to the NCKU hotel, that is really nice with both shower and tub in the room. Sorry Riverside, I did not get the room shown in the pictures and was disappointed. It would have been a three if no smoke smell, but I was grateful for the responsive desk clerk who tried his best. We had arranged car driver from hotel to Tainan.
