My husband and I stayed at this Mercure location at both the beginning and end of our recent trip to Spain. As others have noted, some of the rooms are more dated than others. Our first room was in what I call 'good-enough' shape. It was definitely showing its age. The second room was either newer or better cared for by guests. However, both rooms were comfortable and clean. What impressed us most about the hotel was the lobby area. It was well-appointed and pleasant to sit and wait in or... Read more

I've stayed with other Accor group hotels (Novotel and Ibis), but this was my first with Mercure. It was simply fantastic. The hotel opens up with a decent sized lobby and reception. The room was exceptionally large with a passage leading to the main door and a separate room door giving you a feel of a pseudo suite kind of a stay. Well carpeted along with good colour combination of the room giving a feel of luxury and space. The room is provided with tea and coffee maker which was a big help. Th... Read more

We may have just been unlucky but room 101 was one of the dingiest rooms I've ever stayed in. Musty old smell when arrived but ok after we aired it. Decor old & tired I can only assume as I booked very early and got a very good price we were slowly bumped down the room list till we ended up where we were. Wasn't here long so really couldn't be going through the rigmarole of trying to change rooms as we were only in it night times but if I'd have had to spend any time during the day in there I'd ... We stay in many Accor hotels but this was the first for us in Spain. Great location & close to the centre. On first impressions we liked it a lot, however, it never really lived up to expectations. Firstly, it does need a face lift & they are in the process of completing a makeover. Secondly, our room was on the first floor, directly above reception. Spacious with a balcony (but no patio furniture??) but the wifi never worked. Luckily I have a travel plan with my provider but you expect this to ... Read more

Just returned this morning from red hot Madrid! Thank god for the aircon in this hotel! As others have said the decor is dated, but nothing that cannot be fixed. The room was ideal sized for 2 bathroom with bath, good too. Breakfast varied and filling. Staff helpful and polite, would stay again.

I have just returned from a 3 night city break with my son who wanted to visit Madrid to take a tour Santiago Bernabeu Stadium for his 16th birthday. I am usually too lazy to write reviews of the places we visit however having stayed here I felt I had to. Yes, the décor of the hotel is a little outdated but I would actually call it characteristic, it was lovely. The room was perfectly air conditioned, it was clean and indeed was cleaned to a very high standard each day for which room service sh... Read more

We stayed here for the 3rd or 4th time in a couple of years because a) it's part of Accor group and b) it's great location - but again it let us down. This time it was a number of things compounding. No particularly special gold member welcome, intermittent refilling of the 'gratis' soft drinks in the mini bar and most of all inadequate air conditioning. We've already got over the lack of a bar and therefore the free welcome drink and the total lack of drawer and cupboard space! Great shame thou... Read more

My daughter and I spent 5 days in Madrid and arrived near midnight on Monday evening. Reception was open and cost 5euros on the metro taking 45mins and one change of train at nuevos Ministerios, getting off at Plaza de Espana, we got a bit lost but it is 5 minutes walk. Better to get off at Ventura Rodrigues. Day ticket for metro and bus for 10 journeys is under 9 euros. This hotel was near small shopping centre with 'VIPS' shop/cafe where we got Colacao to take home with us and the first Don Q... Read more

Disappointing in every way. The rugs are old, soiled, worn. In addition, they are not kept tidy. Only one person on the staff spoke English and he was unavailable, leaving an intern to stumble through our reservation and needs. Their printer (used for printing boarding passes), did not work. The walls are paper thin. I could hear every word spoken by the people in the room next door. In short, never again.

The Main benefit of this hotel is its location. It is just 10 minutes walk from the Royal Palace. From the Plaza de Espana metro station, just 5 minutes from the hotel, you can reach all the main attractions (such as a the Prado) in about 25 minutes (for 1.5 Euros each way). The airport is just 30 minutes from the same metro station for about 4 Euros each way. I travelled from the airport on the metro at 11 pm and it is perfectly safe. My room was comfortable, and as one would expect with an A... Read more

- Breakfast - WOW!?? The best breakfast I ever had at any hotel - Location - good. Two metro stations nearby. Metro "Ventura Rodriguez" is the closest one. If you go 1 block to the left from hotel, turn left on Princesa and walk another 50 yards. Metro "Plaza Espana" is a little further away. Cross the street, walk by a few restaurants, bare to the left, turn right on Princesa and walk about 100-150 yards, cross the street and you are at the metro entrance. 2 supermarkets are nearby: just go ... An easy trip from the train station on the underground. Staff were great. A lovely older hotel. Our room had the entrance bit with a bathroom off to the right, and then another door in to the main bedroom so we felt well tucked away at night. Bought tickets for the Prado museum on line, then found they had to be printed, the staff couldn't have been more helpful. Lots of places to eat nearby, and we did a lot of walking or caught the underground. Funny old fashioned lifts. Staff were very help... Read more

We a family of 5 had a fantastic stay at this hotel. All people employed there was very friendly pricing fine. Nice comfortable rooms. It is also close to more metro stations as well as shopping areas. On top of this they were very helpfull in getting our camera shipped back to us as we forgot it during the stay. We would recommend this hotel anytime.

Close to the metro and templo de dobod but otherwise, really far from city center. Room also needs major refurbishing as it was old... Really old ! It is summer in Madrid and the AC cannot keep up with the heat. Maybe their HVAC system needs an upgrade too! Did I mention the hotel's old ? and not in a charming sort of old?

Getting the location of an hotel right when booking a city break is vital and the Mercure Madrid Plaza de Espana was the winning choice for me. Just a few minutes on foot from the Royal Palace and Plaza Mayor and with plenty of good restaurants and bars close by, the old city streets of Madrid are at your feet. As for the hotel, it is fairly standard, but spotlessly clean. Generous buffet breakfast. The room was quiet and mine overlooked the road, so don't think worry about any lack of sleep. St... Love love love this hotel! The staff are so friendly and helpful, always willing to answer every question. From the moment we arrived, the staff were smiling, happy and very accommodating. The room was a lot better than we expected - clean, modern and the perfect size. The best part about our stay was definitely our beds.. AMAZING. The hotel is located a short walk away from the main area - shops and restaurants.

We stayed here for five nights. Location is superb within five minutes walk of two metro stations. Lots of eating options nearby. As others have mentioned, the hotel can look worn in places and we learnt that major renovations are planned soon. Nevertheless this hotel has much charm. Our room was large and the bed very comfortable. Spotlessly clean. The staff are friendly and most helpful. Special thanks to Angel for his assistance and advice. The hotel was, as the name implies, close to the Plaza De Espana, also Gran Via (the main shopping street) and also close to the Royal Palace amongst other things. The hotel reception staff were helpful and could speak good English. The hotel itself is fairly small, with a reception area which runs into a small breakfast area on the ground floor. The style of the hotel is very traditional some might say old fashioned, our rooms were a decent size (both large doubles) and were well appointed and ... Read more

So, booked this Hotel after much checking about. Wanted to be fairly close to stuff without walking straight out onto the Gran Via. Funny when the taxi pulled up and realised me and my friends had stopped here 13 years ago when it was the Sofitel. The rooms are looking dated, but as has been stated it is due a refurb. Arrived before check in time, but this wasnt an issue and were booked in quickly by English speaking people on reception. We were offered a map and guidance on where to go etc. ... Read more

Our room was on the fifth floor which is easily accessed by a lift in the reception area . The room was very clean if a little dated as already stated in previous posts.
