We spent two days in this hotel before going on to our Safari........ I have to be honest the food was horrible .............The service was great and the staff were great we enjoy our stay and very thankful restaurants were nearby!! I love the decor of this hotel , the cigar was very nice and the hotel overall was great!!!

Established in 1949 the hotel is a unique blend of the victorian design and modern day design. It is situated conveniently within a walking distance to the Gautrain Station which is only 15 minutes from the airport and to the famous shopping malls at the Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square. If offers a rather unique dining experience spiced by rather elderly waiters. The pool area also is very relaxing in the middle of the built-up city. PSL The Wifi is horrible -- just a word of caution,

Had to stay there on a business trip for 10 days and the hotel is dated, old furniture, carpets and bathroom in desperate need of an upgrade. They say free WIFI but it was almost non existent. WIFI was very erratic and poor connectivity. The service from staff was mixed some where friendly and some felt they were doing you a favour. Breakfast was always busy and overcrowded. The only two things going for this hotel was its location and the Bull Run restaurant. I will not be staying there again ... Read more

I've been visiting this hotel for years from the UK and especially since its refurbishment of public areas and rooms, it is even more well worth recommending! There is a rare 'family' ambience, with most staff having been there for years, providing a 'from the heart' service, making u feel a real guest not just a number. The breakfast buffet is extraordinarily varied and plentiful.....i love the public areas around the reception, and of course the warm, country house feeling as opposed to cold g... Read more

the rooms in the newer section are way better than the older ones in the old section i.e.. the ones fed by the elevator in the lobby.make sure to book and confirm online and pay online as well prices can change for why was described to me as a high occupancy rate, not sure i understand it to this day.I waited a while to write this, i didn't want to be unfair but i would stay again but would be a little more careful, and would shop there are plenty of options very close.

I recently had to good fortune to use the gym of this very famous & centrally located landmark hotel, kindly arranged for me by the manager Jorge & his very helpful & friendly PA Kim. What a pleasure! As it was early I had the entire very spacious & very well equipped gym to myself & the privilege of TWO flat screen TV so I could watch the news & sport at the same time! All toiletries & towels were provided & a steam room is available if required - wow! Louis-THE-lawyer

My wife and I stayed for 2 nights in May, we arrived at the hotel early at 9 am after an overnight flight but we were immediately given a room. The hotel itself is very traditional with beautiful gardens and a pool in the middle. The bar is classic and nice and the Bull Run restaurant is one of the best steak houses I have eaten in. The staff are very nice and welcoming. One nice thing is the free shuttle running to the nearby Sandton Mall.

The room was nice, and the bathtub was excellent. They have a great in house restaurant that I would definitely recommend! I was so nice to have a restaurant on property that I could easily stop in at for dinner so I didn't have to get a cab, or walk outside of the hotel.

The staff are really friendly and helpful, they couldn't be more so. The in house restaurant (the Bull Run) is very good. The central area with pool, birds and greenery is pleasant. The location is good, a five minute walk to Nelson Mandela square with its shopping, dining etc, and a ten minute walk from Gautrain (and there is a shuttle bus if you'd rather not walk). My only complaint is that the bar allows smoking (but, unfortunately, that seems to be the norm in South Africa)

My room was not in the Ballalika portion, but in another building. I always needed help even finding my room. I asked for a map but was never given one ( just for the hotel!!). If I had to spend just one night in Joberg again, I would chose this hotel again. Nice leafy setting in the middle of this big city and it warmed this birder's heart. The room and bathroom were good sizes, the restaurant served a nice breakfast (we didn't experience other meals) etc. The driveway was narrow and somewhat hard to get in and out of and the layout of the place was awkward, but all in all, a very nice stay.

Stayed in this hotel for 2 nights at the beginning of July this year. Hotel is situated in the heart of Sandton, opposite the Stock Exchange. There is quite a lot of construction happening around the hotel so not the best outlook from our windows. The hotel is located close to Sandton City and has free (except for tips) valet parking which is an excellent bonus. The room was not ready upon arrival, but it was suggested we have a drink at the bar while we wait and they would come fetch us when it was. I think that one could overlook the swollen door frames and slightly worn carpets and dated furnishing, if you are simply looking for somewhere to sleep when not exploring the area, in business meetings or catching up with friends. Stayed here a couple of times on a recent trip to Johannesburg. It is in the Sandton City area which means it is a long way from the centre of town, but this is the area of town where most of the new hotels are as well as the HUGE indoor mall. (Downtown Johannesburg is not really a place for tourists anymore.) The mall (which includes many stores - from Woolworths to Gucci and Prad - and restaurants) is a 5 minute walk, but there is a shuttle from the hotel every half hour and once it is dark ... Read more

A remarkably charming hotel that truly felt like home during my entire five-day stay. A Colonial influence creates an outstanding atmosphere, and the gardens are delightful --- complete with well-visited bird feeders. Breakfast in the Colony Room came with great service from Rosemary, Robben and others. Nelson Mandela Square and Sandton City, two large intertwined shopping centers, are just a couple of blocks away, but the hotel provides a shuttle service for safety. A minor complaint: There was... I stayed at the hotel for ten nights in september an October. Booked through booking.com on a non-prepayment basis. To my surprise I received an e-mail a couple of weeks before going, that I needed to do a full prepayment, which was not the deal I was offered on booking.com. At first I did not respond, but one week before going I received an e-mail stating that I would loose my room if I did not pay. I called booking.com, who in turn called the hotel saying that this was in breach of the pol... Read more

Hotel is located in a safe convenient neighborhood. A very attentive staff. I left a piece of jewelry in the room and found out it on my way to the airport. I have contacted the hotel. Jewelry was found and shipped to my home address in USA. It was a pleasure to deal with the staff. All of them were extremely polite, followed up and communicated to me in multiple emails. Great service

We had a quiet and spacious room. The breakfast buffet was very good. They had shuttle to Guatrain (metro) every half an hour which made things easier and the hotel is close to the gautrain and shopping center.

I stayed at the hotel for 7 nights. Location is safe and close to Sandton Shopping Centre. The staff was helpful on the desk but the housekeeping never tried to change towels even they were on the floor. The breakfast was ok there are better choices at Sandton Shopping Centre at same price.

Stayed here for two weeks while working in Sandton. Really enjoyed it and would definitely choose to stay here again. It's an old hotel, originally built as an escape from Johannesburg but now well surrounded by high rise buildings. The Balalaika is a set of three story buildings with a very restful ambiance, lovely gardens, two small swimming (well, more like dipping) pools, a great breakfast buffet, and friendly staff. The rooms are very comfortable without being in any way posh. It's a gr... Read more

Our choice of hotel in Johannesburg was the Balalaika once again. This hotel is like a home from home. The staff are so friendly and efficient and will do anything to make your stay special. This is our third visit and enjoyed it tremendously. Breakfast buffet is amazing coupled with the loveliest staff! Our evening at the Bull Run restaurant was excellent, the food so delicious, great menu unlike our visit the following evening to the Butcher Shop & Grill. The Butcher Shop & Grill was so enormo... I stay at Marriott Hotels all the time, and I think this hotel is a Cat. 2 hotel which does not do it justice. This is an older, colonial style hotel surrounded by the modern buildings of Stanton. I loved the "out of Africa" feel and newly renovated room that I was in. If you are like me, and making your first trip to South Africa, this is the kind of hotel to stay in, not a standard modern hotel with no character. I stayed here two nights. Excellent food at the Bull Run Restaurant attached to the hotel. The hotel is within walking distance to Nelson Mandela Square and Sandton City Shopping Mall. Sandton is not my fave destination but I needed to be near the Gauteng Train to catch a flight so opted for the Balalaika which has a free shuttle service ( also to the local shopping mall - Sandton City ). Not the hotel's fault but sitting in the Bull Ring having my dinner was like being in a building site - massive buildings are being built in the street, even working on a Sunday morning! We have stayed at this hotel many times and it never disappoints us. A perfect location, close to the Gautrain, Sandton City etc and the hotel also provides a shuttle bus to both locations. A beautiful hotel with comfortable rooms, lush gardens and pools. The buffet breakfast is well worth having and the steaks at Bull Run restaurant, delicious ! Great service, friendly and efficient staff. Highly recommended.

This is an old favourite of mine in Sandton due to professional, friendly staff, great location and large rooms quipped with everything you need. I booked a 2 bedroom suite which was extremely comfortable and right near the pool looking directly on to the garden. The pool has plenty of seats for relaxing, taking in the view of the gardens alive with birds and lunch can be taken there just watch out for the birds flying overhead. I received an extra present from the birds whilst writing in my dia... Read more

Clean comfortable well maintained room with plenty of amenities. Place is dated and corridors are convoluted and rooms are far from the main desk. Has the atmosphere of colonial times with a beautiful in door court. Restaurant was very good. Staff is very friendly and helpful in every aspect. Window could not be closed and needed repair. Parking is behind the hotel and difficult to find. Hotel is located to a large mall and many restaurants.

The hotel spreads itself like a maze... sprawling in every direction , with lifts and exits quite far from rooms. The hotel staff is really lovely - but the old decor and soft furnishings really give the place a dowdy 3rd rate old English country hotel. There are lots of road and construction surrounding the hotel -so entry and exit to the hotel is not the easiest. It is a breaths distance from Sandton City - so, very convenient for quick access to restaurants and shopping. The hotel is comfor... Read more

The Balalaika is often used by our Company when staff members visit our Head Office Branch in Sandton, Johannesburg. We do not spend much time at the hotel, however the bits and pieces in the evenings are spent at the Bull Run (an associated restaurant) where we enjoy great food. Since it is located close to the Gautrain Station there are many foreign travellers that make use of the Hotel and it is pleasant to see, hear and feel a bit of the cosmopolitan vibe. A nice hotel but in need of a refresh, the decor is old and tired and the rooms while might have been nice 10 years ago now feel dated. The layout is quite confusing with long walks and many twists and turns to get to some rooms. The staff have to guide you for at least the first time. On the positive the staff are very friendly and helpful and the location is good. But for the same price there are more modern, newer hotels nearby.

I have had the chance to stay in this hotel before and I was as pleased as my previous times. Okay it may not be the classiest hotel or the most luxurious. but it has a reall.y homy and cosy feel all the way. From the moment you arrive, you are being welcomed with huge - friendly smiles. The reception area gives you the feeling of being in someones living room (it has huge leather sofas). The hotel has only 3 floors and perhaps this contributes to that cosy feeling. I'm not a fan or disparaging remarks or bad reviews. This hotel experience was notably subpar, the electrical sockets didn't work, so I was unable to charge my devices. Not a huge deal at first so I called the front desk and asked for a repair or perhaps a new room. Fast forward to the third call hours later the staff (apparently less than excited about the call) responded. This incident mixed with a less than spotless room made me not love the price I paid... thanks Marriott but no thanks.

I've usually stayed with friends on my recent visits to Jo'burg so have not had to think much about locations before: Jo'burg is so spread out that it can be quite mind-boggling to decide where a convenient base would be for getting around (albeit with a driver) unless you're up for paying London prices for one of the 5* hotels at Mandela Square. The Protea Balalika was a good price point for the Sandton location and is located exactly opposite Exchange Square, so there are some cafes and ATMs ... Read more

I had a 14 hour layover in Joburg. Instead of staying in the Protea inside OR Tambo, I decided to venture out. I was surprised at how little time it took to get from OR Tambo to the hotel. I took the Gautrain then walked from the Gautrain station (note I am a solo female traveler). Door to door it was 30 minutes. My siblings and I really enjoyed the location because it was near the Sandton Shopping Mall which is one of the biggest in South Africa. And the hotel itself was fun and quirky. I truly enjoyed staying here, it was for only two nights but we made the most of it. I will definitely plan to stay here again. I also felt really safe in the area walking around alone in the evenings.
