Staff was excellent in all respects - from the drivers, the room attendants, the guides, the barman, the waiters, the receptionists... They go out of their way to make sure that you spend the best time possible. First the food - excellent at any time. The a-la-carte menu is just beyond description. Then the rooms - clean, well-maintained and well-aired. Bed is just right, neither too soft nor too hard. Then the facilities - the free shuttles to the airport (no need for transfer), train station ... Read more

We stayed at the Protea Hotel for one night as a stopover between safari lodges in March. The reception staff were so helpful. We wanted to travel to Sandton to buy a Hard Rock café badge and were a little unsure about travelling on the train. The staff were amazing. The hotel provides a free taxi service to the train station - just a 5 minute drive away. The staff assured us that we would be fine and the journey from the local station just outside the airport was much cheaper (around £4... Read more

On airport but round and round to get there. In a quiet region - no significant aircraft noise. Some road noise. Not too large. Outside eating and lounge areas around water features. Aircraft themed including rooms and public areas. An old aircraft simulator is located in the meeting room area and can be used by guests at any hour. Full bar. No craft beer selections. Restaurant is nice and food very good, local influence on international menu. We had salads for dinner once - a little small for a... Read more

Very close to the airport, so it is ideal when you are leaving or arriving from/to Joburg (which was my case) and one of the most economic hotels in that area. It has a small but good and tidy gym. It also has a big and wide parking area. Free coffee served at the reception.

This hotel has a shuttle that runs frequently from OR Tambo. The rooms are on the small size, but clean. The restaurant is open 24 hours which is very handy. I have stayed here twice in 2 years, and was surprised that the bellman remembered me. The décor is all about airplanes, and there is a flight simulator. There is a tour desk at the hotel which is great. The halls in the hotel can get very noisy, and you are in very close proximity to the airport runways. I had a horrible incident w... Read more

Almost two years since we stayed here the hotel is still just as excellent as the last time. Although it was just an overnight short stay the staff were again helpful and friendly. Breakfast was just as excellent as previous and with excellent beds and being exceptionally quiet we had a great stay after a long international flight. Wifi was free and fast. Still the hotel choice in Jo'burg.

We chose the hotel due to it's close proximity to OR Thambo airport, however it was not at a walkable distance. There is a shuttle every half hour, which did not turn up on time when we wanted to use it. The rooms are comfortable. Good quality linen and matress. Towels were thread bare. The staff were friendly and helpful during check in but not during our check out at 4am. All in all an average stay for the money you pay.

The location is great when arriving and departing from JNB. The room was quiet and comfortable for a short stay, with high quality bedding and adequate space. We had a quick drink and appetizers at the bar, and we were happy with the service. The decor is industrial - which doesn't scream "comfort" but it is highly functional and efficient. Since we were staying in the hotel for the specific purpose of proximity to the airport, the Protea worked well for us.

This hotel is conveniently located close to OR Tambo airport. You can see the runway from the bar and garden. A very modern hotel located. Rooms very clean and modern, very well laid out. The staff at the hotel are very friendly and pleasent; service with a smile. Protea was a convenient place to conduct business. The staff was friendly and the place clean. The buffet had lots of choices as well as a good assortment of fresh, local fruit, which is always a boon. My room was quiet even thought it faced the airport and the evening appetizers were wonderful. As a stop-over or a business venue I would recommend. A side benefit was the view of the tarmac. Clean, modern and relatively quiet. Protea hotels offer 50% off meals with their membership card. Certainly worth it. I stay at the Protea Hotel OR Tambo regularly on business and always find it pleasant. A major problem at this hotel is however the roomkey system which constantly malfunctions. The keycard constantly loses its information and one has to get it re-programmed at reception. This morning after breakfast I was locked out again. The hotel itself is awe inspiring and we found ourselves wondering around the hotel admiring all the aviation themed decor. Even the bar chairs where made out of airplane wheels. The rooms are big, be... Read more

We only were there one night but would definitely stay again. It was quiet, clean and the staff was very helpful. It was close to the airport, they provided a free shuttle. they also had a free shuttle to go to "Emperors Palace"- a Casino with lots of shopping and restaurants.

The staff here were great but the hotel itself was a bit tired and the bedrooms felt a bit basic. Positives were that the conference facilities and staff were great, it's close to the airport with a free bus, the Internet is decent and the hotel staff were very helpful. As a vegetarian in SA it's a bit difficult but there is enough variety on the menus for a few days.

I stayed here for one night whilst waiting to make a connecting flight. The room was comfortable (albeit a little strange having the shower next to the bed) and the restaurant was very nice. The only downside was that as the hotel isn't onsite, you have to collect a taxi transfer which only run every 30 mins so a bit of waiting around for us.

Arrived late after an international flifht, so decided to spend the night here. Hotel shuttle meets at a designated area just behind the Intercontinental hotel. Shuttle every half hour. Hotel has a nice industrial decor. Staff is pleasant. Room is typical, but be aware that the shower is literally in the bedroom. Zero privacy if you are with a friend. There is a shuttle to Emperors Palace at 18:00, 20:00 and 22:00. Breakfast is typical for a hotel of this category, with a price to match.

I emailed the hotel for instruction on how to get the free shuttle to the hotel and they promptly sent them, which was handy. Walk out the front of the airport, follow the path to the left of the Intercontinental (On your left on the path are the car rentals). Follow the signs to the bus depot behind the Intercontinental. They leave on the hour and half hour. All staff were pleasant. We ordered burgers for dinner, which were huge and really good. Our Hotels.com rate didn't include breakfast, so... Read more

Conveniently located near the airport, the Protea OR Tambo is a good choice for the travelers who need to be close to the airport ?? in comfort. The rooms are designed to maximize space and yet don??t feel claustrophobic. The beds are cushy and comfortable, there is functional closet space, climate control and DSTv. The shower and lavatory is ingeniously placed as is the very functional toilet. The breakfast buffet is excellent and can satisfy most palates and the food here before a long ha... Read more

This hotel is one of the best in the airport vicinity and value for money. Well insulated and well positioned. Room are modern and stylish, as the whole hotel is designed to the airport theme. Restaurant is good and has a lot to offer for the tired traveller. Shuttle service available, as well as a gym. A dream

Location difficult to find in the dark by car, even with GPS. It is NOT in the airport area, but is about 3 km away by road through a dodgy looking industrial/urban area. Use shuttle if possible. Room about 500m away and directly opposite the airport loading gates area; soundproofing was extreremely poor - aircraft starting up and moving about all the time - no sleep until well after midnight.

Only stayed here one night before catching an onward flight to Hoedspruit. Check in was quick and efficient, rooms were comfortable and well equipped. Ate in the restaurant which was delightful, well cooked and well presented. Staff were attentive and well trained. The mini bus to JNB was great and manned by service oriented personnel. Overall a great experience and well recommended.

The facility is a 4 star hotel with a neat room with all the functionalities. Unfortunately I have to rate this hotel town to a "never again" status due to the staff overall impression. Luggage help not offered on arival. Orientation at booking in was poor with very little information shared and run down like a rhyme that i could hardly make out what was being said. I had better and friendlier service experiences from hospitals. During the second night two false fire alarms occurred, no p... Read more

We stayed one night after arriving from Europe. The hotel is comfortable and rooms are well furnished and quite well appointed. Check-in and check-out was smooth and quick. Sound proofing is good - we were not disturbed by aircraft noise. We did not eat there so cannot comment on the breakfast but it looked more than ample. The shuttle from the airport runs very half hour until 11 pm. Its departure point is behind the Intercontinental Hotel, about 150 meters from the terminal. However the direc... Read more

This hotel is not inside the airport. Unfortunately, I booked this by mistake. The shuttle is easy enough to take, it is a bit of a walk from where you get your bag though. It leaves from the airport on the hour and half hour. The hotel itself is fine. Nothing special. My room was quiet and I had no complaints. Check in went fine. Breakfast was a buffet, and the food was ok at best. They were very understaffed. Getting the shuttle back to the airport was fine. It was good for a long layover... ... Read more

We had just gotten off a 15.5 hour flight from Atlanta. Though it was near the airport, you do need to catch a shuttle to get there and we waited maybe 30 minutes to get room on one. We stayed only 1 night before leaving on a safari trip. The room was a standard hotel room, and breakfast a good buffet with lots of choices, though you have to go outside and across a courtyard to reach the breakfast area. That morning it was a bit chilly and raining a bit - so we made a fast dash.

I made the mistake of not checking exactly how close the hotel is to the airport when booking. It is not walking distance, which is a pity. The hotel does offer shuttles, but reasonably enough it doesn't operate after 11pm. Hotel staff at reception were friendly and helpful despite my 1am check in, room service was good and quick. All in all if you're looking for a comfortable hotel close to the airport, and you've considered arrangements to get to and from the hotel, it is a good option.

The people are great, room are nice and clean too. The hotel is very close to the airport.. but you need 20min to reach it from it. Price are way to expensive for the place. I rather take an hotel inside the airport next time, or find a place with some activities around. Restaurant is not cheap but good.

This is just what it is...an airport stop off hotel. Don't expect any more or less. There is a free shuttle...it is on time and the hotel is a short distance away. But when you are there, you are basically reliant on a cab for anything. Room is fine. A/c, hot water, bed, international channels, restaurant with pretty decent food and fast service, and good working WIFI. The downgrade is the tiny room....you can barely turn in there...maybe typical for the market. Price is a bit high for what you... Read more

Worst Protea/Marriott experience ever!!! The shuttle driver was super rude to us when we wanted to get on his shuttle. He refused to take us as he picked up some flight crew. We were eventually picked up after standing at the shuttle stop for nearly an hour and a phone call to the hotel. Once at the hotel, we got to our room and the A/C did not work. I called the front desk at 11:00pm to report this. After many calls and them telling us we are being moved to a different room, we were told at 12:... Read more

Normal standards I am used to with Protea. I was upgraded to a room with a bath which was most welcome after my travels. The rooms are comfortable, the bar fine and the buffet had enough dinner as well as breakfast options. Friendly reception staff too and a reliable shuttle. Only thing that marred my night's stay was the alarm at 12. 30am and again after 1am. Most annoying as they were false alarms eminating from the kitchen.

Big Rooms and well service and clean. Reception very busy and noisy. Evening Buffet was not worth the money and the chefs are shouting at each other, and the food was not worth the money. Staff at reception and restaurant very friendly, shuttle to airport available and Hotel next to the Airport. I stayed here for one night whilst working in the area. I found the staff to be very friendly, the food to be lovely, and the room to be clean and comfy. The room itself is not massive but was fine for the night, although as the bedroom and shower room are one room you'd better be comfortable with anyone you're sharing with.

Checkin took a long time. I was given a twin room. Had to come all the way down to request a queen room. Rooms are not large (for Sth Africa, and for the airport). The room is OK, but maintenance has been done patchily. The windows are tiny. The shower/bathroom is a little weird. No fridge/mini-bar. No iron. Room service took over 60 minutes to arrive.
