Walking up away from the waterfront we found this classic hotel that was like going back in time to a wonderful classic era. Lunch was lovely and the grounds with their lawn and pool were delightful in the sunshine. Worth a visit.

We had a lovely three night stay at the hotel. Staff friendly, rooms comfortable and beautiful. We love the old world charm of this hotel. Had a lovely massage at the spa even after we sadly had a few miscommunications of bookings. I recommend booking in advance and book via email. Hotel is very central and easy to get to most activities and good restaurants around Cape Town.

My husband & I stayed at the Mount Nelson for our anniversary by default really, because the hotel we had booked at was so awful we left immediately after checking in. We were lucky enough to get a room at the Mount Nelson at the very last minute and we were so glad we did. They could not have been more accommodating - the check in was efficient and friendly, our room was prepared in half an hour and we were given a complementary bottle of bubbly and a beautiful fruit platter. The room was spac... Read more

My son's American companion suggested, {after consulting her guide book} that we arrange morning tea at the grand old Mt Nelson in celebration of my wife's birthday, which we did. This is living as Life used to be for sure and we greatly enjoyed the occasion, especially the effort made by the staff who, on hearing of the celebration, arranged for a cake to be prepared for the birthday girl. Such a special touch which I have no doubt will be remembered for many years Thank you... The eats wer... Read more

The Hotel grounds are beautiful, the property itself oozes history, and stories felt as if they were lingering the hallways (including one particular fun one of a guest complaining about a vagabond on the lawn that turned out to be John Lennon). High Tea is exquisite and the sculptures around the grounds a joy to explore

This is the best of old world charm with modern facilities. The staff throughout the hotel were friendly, professional and helpful. Food and drinks were of a high standard, the rooms were comfortable and quiet and there is an overall feeling of being valued and well looked after.

We spent a lot of time on Tripadvisor and elsewhere trying to figure out which Cape Town hotel would suit us best, looking at maps, and comparing hotel locations against attractions and restaurants. We picked the Mount Nelson with some worries that the area was too too far from the center. The worries proved groundless, for Cape Town is more compact than it looks on a map, and the Mount Nelson is within walking distance of the center. If you walk down the entrance road to the portico you are a... Read more

The "Nellie" as it is fondly known is something of an institution amongst Cape Town hotels and so we expected that this stay would be exceptional in every respect. Sadly, we found it a little lacking. The public areas of the hotel are lovely especially the diningroom with its enormous silver bowls of pink roses and period furnishings. A live pianist would have added to the ambience. The guest rooms are large and comfortable and are equipped with all the amenities one would expect of a hotel of... Read more

We had the pleasure of staying at The Mount Nelson in July. Its a great place to be based at in Cape Town for getting to and from other places around the area. We were greeted with glasses of sparkling Cape wine while checking in. We were upgraded into a lovely room. The concierge showed us around the room very nicely. The décor is old colonial in fitting with the history of the building. There are 2 pools one is heated. There are 2 restaurants and a small spa which is separated for men and wom... Read more

The Mount Nelson is a classic Grand Dame. I am not sure if it was an issue with my visit, but I found the overall ambiance rather sad and uninviting. The room was very good, but the common areas are disappointing, as it is the restaurant. Overall, it is not a place where I would happily return. HOTEL - I don't like the layout and the common areas. The main building has a lounge and a bar, which are both rather small and unappealing. The feeling is of an old place (a little worn, particularly th... Read more

Excellent afternoon tea. Get a taxi we walked and went though some dodgy areas. Tea is served at 1.30 or 3.30 it may be wise to book at busy times. Service was great by a very charming young man who introduced us to three new teas. The sandwiches, savouries and cakes were mind blowing the scones however were not as good as I would have liked. Had I known I would have skipped the scone and had more of the cakes. We worth a visit

You can't experience Cape Town without enjoying high tea at the Belmond Mount Nelson. We went with a big group and they were very accommodating and friendly. The tea is delicious, not to mention the HUGE assortment of desserts, scones, and savory treats.

I really enjoyed my High Tea experience at the hotel. It was a lovely relaxed and dignified affair. The sweet items were particularly delicious ( I have a sweet tooth ). After enjoying the scrumptious treats I went for a delightful perambulation in the beautiful gardens and had a few more delectable confections on my return to the Tea Lounge. I also took the opportunity to request the lady at the piano to play one of my favourite tunes - "On a Slow Boat to China" - and she rose to the occasion w... Read more

Coming here several times a year, it's a heavenly retreat - it's old school, it has history, charm, all the splendor of a grande hotel - with some wonderful and uber-cool innovations like the gorgeous bar, dining area (check the ceiling with the twinkling stars) and a truly amazing chef's table experience that foodies must not miss out on. The chef is extremely talented and this is the place he really gets to showcase his brilliance.

I visited for four night with my 10 year old son. Staff were very friendly and helpful, sorting out a room for us to grab a few winks post night-flight. Staff made my son feel very welcome. He is a keen swimmer so the hotel lost a star because the pool was a little dirty with bird feathers and leaves.

Don't mess about with the also rans. Don't try this and try that. When you find a winner stick with it. This hotel is one of the best of the best. I like the slight isolation of being out of the main hotel but with all the trimmings. The green park block. A room with a balcony is the best. Looking out onto table mountain and lions head. I decided to spoil my wife with a memorable dinner that is also vegetarian. No easy task. So I booked a table at the Chefs Table in the Mount Nelson hotel. The booking process was easy and the administrator was very efficient. I was able to specify a vegetarian meal for my wife with a regular meal for myself. We were led through the restaurant kitchen to a small alcove with about 8 small tables. There was one other couple. The service was excellent. There is no corkage option so expect to choose... As the main hotel is undergoing renovation they upgraded us to a luxurious suite in what was once a mansion and later became a Helmsley hotel. We had a view of table mountain and all the amenities possible. Morning tea at the "Nelly" as it is affectionately known amongst local Capetonians, is a once-in-a-lifetime experience! The Mount Nelson has a wonderful selection of speciality teas on offer along with some history of the tea industry in South Africa. The beautifully appointed lounge and conservatory, welcoming staff and delicious cakes and pastries ensured a very special afternoon. 1. Fantastic location 2. Excellent service 3. Indulgent food 4. Very friendly staff 5. Best hotel grounds ever seen. Breathtaking. Stay here and you will be treated like a movie star. The Mount Nelson does not make you feel out of place or is not stuffy in anyway. Everyone is welcome and no-one will want to leave. There are 5 star hotels and then there are iconic hotels of the world. This place is latter, its simply a different league.
