Me and my husband waited almost and hour to check in to our room, We also went to the tempo restaurant inside the resort and waited a hour just to get our food, and the food wasn't good at all. BUT THE FOOD AT THE WET BAR WAS Sooooooooooooooooooo DELICIOUS NOT TO MENTION THE DRINKS OMG!!!! I FELT LIKE I WAS IN HEAVEN, THE STAFF WAS SO NICE A FRIENDLY MADE US FEEL LIKE FAMILY!!! "My overall experience was great, but I had one complaint that honestly got me quite upset. We decided to have breakfast at Cafe Solell one morning. Not only was the food WAY over priced ($24 per person) and nothing special, (could have got the same thing at a Holiday Inn) but the waiter tried to bill us for the kids when he knew they eat free. Then he tried to act like he forgot or something. I was pissed and felt like they tried to rob me!"

"This place was amazing . The red level rooms is a must do. The butler service that comes with the red level service is exceptional. My butler was amazing and he went above and beyond what was required in giving my husband and I service. He made my experience at this resort one that we will never forget. The overall staff at the resort was so genuinely friendly it was very refreshing. I would definitely recommend this to my friends and family."

"This is a very nice property for relaxation. It's about 30 minutes from San Juan, so renting a car is definitely advised. It's close to other places like Luquillo, El Yunque Rain Forest, and Fajardo. We had a great time, but would advise people to consider the following:
*Check-in took much longer than it should have. 30-45 minutes for Red Level, only to be shifted over to the Red Level lounge afterwards.
*Deposits - please be aware that there is a $100 deposit/night you are staying at the property to be held on your credit card. We stayed 4 nights, so that was $400. This was not explained before hand.
*Parking - we went in off season, however during the weekend the hotel is most busy, the parking was a bit daunting.
The food was great for breakfast, we unfortunately didn't get a chance to indulge in the happy hours. The rooms could benefit from a fridge or microwave. They do have a mini bar, but you can not store things, and a cooler is an extra charge.
All in all, it was a great experience. Now that I know what to expect, I can go back with confidence and enjoy myself much more.
Happy travels!"

Phi from Rio Grande, PR
"We arrived at hotel around 9pm and were told room was not ready but were given another room. We were told restaurants were open till 11pm. When we went to one restaurant we were told it was closed, we went to a second restaurant and were told (at 9:45pm) that it was also closed due to lack of customers. There was one restaurant open the night of our arrival. Food was overpriced and poorly prepared.
We booked a "redline, ocean view junior suite.... We requested twin beds. We called ahead to make sure that these were available. We were told that this request was could be accommodated. When we went to the desk the next morning to change rooms we were moved to a second story room with a view of buildings and palm tree, no view at all of the ocean. We tried to get a room where the ocean was visible and were told that the room we were given had an ocean view.
We would never have chosen this hotel if we could not get two beds with the ocean view. Since we were assured by the hotel ahead of time that we could be accommodated (without a roll away bed) we booked the hotel. The hotel would do nothing to accommodate us when we arrived.
Since the "red line, ocean view, junior suite... was $50 dollars more than the lower cost "garden view... I asked for reimbursement. I called my travel agency to ask them to intervene. The rep I spoke with was very helpful and called the hotel. The rep was cut off once and had to call back, she was shuffled around from one staff member to another. Finally the rep was told by hotel staff that the hotel would contact me with the amount of the reimbursement. No call came. When I called again to check on the reimbursement another rep called the hotel and was told that the room we were in was listed as "ocean view... so there was no reason to reimburse.
This hotel listing was full of false advertisements. Only on the weekend were 3 restaurants open. The food was way over priced for the quality. The Redline Lounge offered coffee and water all day, nothing else.
The room looked very nice but the dust in the corners, the pealing wall paper borders and the stained sheets told the real story. There was mold on the shower curtain and near the toilet. We asked that this be cleaned which was done partially. We used bleach to do it ourselves.
Ice was often not available and the room service was not only very expensive but salads arrived warm and the pizza ordered was cold.
Room service trays were left outside of room in a space where they were to be returned after use. The space was outside the room under the stairs. The trays remained there for 3 days. Only when I pointed this out to staff were they removed.
In the parking lot there was a sign stating that coolers or outside food could not be brought to the rooms. What kind of hotel does this?
The worst part was the surliness of the staff and the lack of interest in their jobs. Everything took too long whether it was responses to questions asked, food service or a request for more water during a meal.
If you want and "grand... vacation AVOID the "Gran... Melia in Puerto Rico.

"I traveled with a fam. of 10 - some of us roomed at the Sol Melia Villas, and some at the Gran Melia hotel rooms which are really Bungalow Bldgs. The villa was elegant, stylish and extremely clean w/plenty of toiletries. My one-bedroom ste. had 2 TVs but only 1 rem. control - a little inconvenient. There are a few washers & dryers available for villa guests - very convenient. The VIP Lounge for villa guests was a plus; it's a very big area w/plenty of comfortable sofas, and separate seating areas, eating tables, free sodas, wines, champagne, coffee and tea. Also continental breakfast there (not sure if that's everyday). Also in the VIP Lounge were computers for guests to use & a large screen TV. The Gran Melia 'hotel' rooms are so big and roomy. The clgs. are unbelievably high. Depending which bldg. you are assigned to, you might be a longer walk to the main pool and restaurants. You can catch the shuttles which takes you around the grounds. The main pool NEVER closes so the kids were always happy, but I heard sometimes the water got murky in certain sections. My hubby went to the breakfast buffet & said it was overpriced. Instead we always ate out. Ctra. 3 (main road) has so many chain restaurants and local places to eat at a fraction of the cost. Long wait for check in for the hotel guests - we got there at 8pm and the rooms weren't ready. Villa Guests' check-in was much faster & easier (in the nice VIP Lounge). Great hotel - great experience!"

"This trip was beyond any words can describe. I will try to keep it as short as possible. My bf and i were celebrating my bday WEEKEND and i thought this would be a perfect getaway for a great price...wrong! The flights were delayed 5 hours front and back!!!!! so we spent most of this weekend 'vacation' in an airport. we didn't get to the hotel until LATE Friday when we were suppose to arrive that afternoon! pretty much ruined our whole day. Once we arrived no one spoke English to tell us where to park our rent a car so we had to find out on our own. I got out while my bf found parking, i waited in line that took about 30 mins once i got to the front the lady told us we were in the wrong line for the RED LEVEL LOUNGE (which we paid more for the services..haha) There were no signs, no direction in this hotel, how was i suppose to know this! Once we checked in we chalked it up had dinner which was good and went to bed. The next morning with our 'butler and concierge's service' i decided to start the day off on the right note and order 2 glasses of mimosas-at this point the woman who answered told me they don't serve alcohol to the room. WHAT???? I never heard such a thing before. I asked her what was the sense of butler service then? She proceeded to tell me I had to call him, I told her how do I get ahold of him? She responded 'WOW!...hold please' That was it I couldn't believe the service and the rudeness I was experiencing. She came back to tell me 'ok what do you want I will get it' I told her my request and she told me it would take 45 mins. I told her forget it! My bf and I got ready and went down to get our FREE breakfast that was included in our package. Low and behold we had to wait in a mile long line that was for ALL guests, the only difference was after we wait 2 hrs our buffet breakfast would be free when the others would have to pay. I figured there would be a separate line for us 'RED LEVEL GUESTS' i guest i expected too much. We decide to just go to our lounge area where we were offered complimentary continental breakfast; which we thought couldn't be much worse. Now your really going to laugh...when we got there all that was left were 2 pieces of fruit and a couple cake squares with sugar frosting on top. We laughed at this point. I asked the lady at the desk in our lounge area if they were going to replenish our cont breakfast, the woman said 'we don't do that.' I didn't realize it was survival of the fittest while we were on our relaxing vacation! 'First come first serve complimentary breakfast' is what they should have called it. I hate to go on but once we went back to the room got our suits on and down to the pool we ordered some drinks and food which were very prompt, surprisingly. We thought maybe our luck had changed...we layed out for a bit took a dip in the ocean and came back to cash out. Oops! our bartender was no where to be found, and NO ONE could cash us out except for him??? We waited for about 30 mins at the bar for someone to take another drink order form us-nope no one could do that either. So we left went kayaking and came back- an Hour later!....Bartender was still not there and we still couldn't close out. We finally asked for a manager in which he told one of the guys to close us out and nothing was even comped for wasting our time! I was completely shocked. All in all my bf and I enjoyed OUR company, even after such horrible service was given to us all weekend. I would highly recommend for everyone in that resort to take a customer service class and how to SMILE AND TREAT YOUR GUESTS who are quite frankly paying your living. I thought tourism was looked upon as their source of income and not an annoyance. I didn't think my expectations were far fetched or hard to meet, I simply just ask for politeness and good customer service when I go away, especially since this wasn't an all inclusive. I can honestly say I will never return to this resort (by the way which was nowhere near anything!! I was in the middle of no where) and will never come back to Rio Grande. I hope this review was helpful"

"This was our first visit to Puerto Rico. Unfortunately, the hotel was a HUGE disappointment. Our room was very musty and we asked to be moved. The second one was not much different. The restaurants were very overpriced! Be sure to ask the price on daily specials before you order! The Asian restaurant was the best of all of then. Now, for the gross part! Room service trays from other guests sat outside our room for 3-4 days. We complained and they were still there the next day! There were no mattress pads on the beds. Housekeeping did not replenish the room correctly. Pretty property and could be a nice spot but they need people who can run it properly. "

"The hotel is beautiful. The staff was great. A lot of relaxing
I wish they had more to do like beach parties, adult events onsite. Its very expensive to eat here for dinner and drinks. I wish they would have a more all-inclusive or you can pay with credit card instead of charging everything to your room. One advice I would give to anyone is rent a car because the taxi rides are expensive but if you don't want to rent a car the taxi drivers were great!
I would go back when i just want a relaxing vacation not a partying vacation."

"The resort itself was very nice. The rooms were clean and not smelly like I had read on recent reviews. We did red level which included a great breakfast buffet. The red level happy hour was ok, but the red level lounge was very crowded during happy hour and we did not always have a place to sit. We were supposed to have a butler and never got one. All we got was an apology when we checked out. The drinks are pricey and you cannot bring in your own food or drink into the resort. A few of the staff were very friendly, not all. Overall, the resort is nice, but I don't know if I will return."

"After booking this hotel I was drawn into reading more reviews that was posted about this resort. I looked on every website you can imagine and I started to second guess our purchase. We booked this vacation for our honeymoon so I wanted my Husband and myself to have a great time, which we did! The only complaint I would have it that the cab fare is pretty high, so possible look into renting a car and the room a slight odor but the staff was there to help fix the problem right away. Friendly satff, wonderful food, enjoyed our cocktail hour, and free breakfast since we were RedLevel, which i recommend. We stay for a week and for 3 days we had activities planned which made our stay in PR more enjoyable! I love, love, love this place!"

"The resort is just amazing !!! Everyone was very nice and pleasant with us.Everyone was very helpful and on nights when we were tired or full from dinner the carts that take u around the hotel was so handy. The restuarant Pasion was soooo good. The pool was so much fun, nice, clean. Having red level was perfect because breakfast was free and there was a private pool and bahi beds for you to use every day of your stay. Free drinks from 5-8pm was good too. The ocean front room with the jacuzzi on the terrace was so perfect for romance and we had an amazing view of the ocean every morning and watching the sun set was beautiful. I would definitely return back here again. So sad to have to leave there yesterday to return to New York reality :-("

"Resort was excellent. Couldn't have picked a better place. The grounds were beautiful. Never used the pool because where our bungalow was located we basically had the beach all to ourselves which was perfect. We rented a car which was a great idea so we had other food options besides the restaurants at the resort since they were so expensive. Found great local places to eat in Luquillo. Weren't allowed to bring in food/water from outside the resort. Golf cart rides to & from the parking lot were hit or miss... sometimes they drove by and we were able to hop on one and then sometimes we walked all the way back and never saw them. They could've been a little more frequent and that would've been nice but since we were probably just coming back from dinner we could use the walk. All in all had a wonderful time & loved the resort. "

They only allow u to put $100 down for each day and dinner is $100 for 2. They have no activities on the resort except beach tennis. I just had a very boring trip I really think that I wasted my money going. I did not like it at all. They will also lock u out of your room if u don't update your daily limit before going to bed. "This is a wonderful looking resort I must admit the staff was great but what I didn't like was all the hidden fees meaning NO!! Free parking!! Which you would think would come with stating at such a expensive resort definitely not worth five stars oh and the food is mediocre at best it reminded me of old country buffet not a resort that isms rated 5 stars overrated!! And I also didn't like how far away from everything else it was you will need to rent a car if you are staying more than 2days because once you eat at all the restaurants here boredem kicks in!! Electric is regulated so that you can't hook up your Xbox or microwave $10 charge to reheat your food $15-$20 charge for parking $100 a day will be on hold so please bring extra money because you will need it!!"

"Beautiful setting, great beach and pool and the kids had a blast. Food at all restaurants, especially poolside, was good. Workout room is pleasant and clean. Room was comfortable if really basic. Weekends get very, very crowded. We wondered whether the hotel had had a recent change of management as the service could use improvement. Many instances of 'not my department.' And families would do well to stop off at a supermarket or mall on the way in...everything from water to beach toys and especially drinks ($7 ice cream, $12 for a kids' hot dog, $69 for a bottle of pino grigio -- which we skipped after an hour on hold with room service!) is incredibly expensive. We would very happily return to Puerto Rico, but barring a fantastic all-inclusive deal, would not go back to this resort."

"We were in Puerto Rico visiting family and stayed at the Gran Melia. The property is beautiful. The room was very clean. The guy at the check in desk had no personality but every one else we encountered was very friendly. All the staff buzz around the property on golf carts. I will say they do drive a bit fast considering people are walking on the same path. We had our 7 year old son with us and i felt like i was walking in the middle of a city street. I kept making sure he was walking along the side of the walkway because it seemed like every 30 seconds a golf cart was wizzing by us pretty fast. The pool is very spacious and the beach area has a fantastic view and is very relaxing. One thing we werent expecting was the $100 per day hold they put on your credit card for incidentals when you check in. We dont use credit cards so that went on our debit/bank card tied to our checking account. That was a bit of a an inconvenience especially since we had already prepaid for the room months before. Luckily our stay was only for 4 days. But that $400 was part of our spending money that we werent able to use the entire time we were there. Not to mention the $15 PER DAY parking fee. Had we planned to stay longer that might have been a bigger issue. Just a good thing to know up front. Housekeeping staff was very attentive and did a good job. We would stay there again but next time we would be a little better prepared!"

"Let me start by saying, this resort is absolutely beautiful. The staff is friendly and will go out of their way to attend to guests. It's a wonderful resort for a honeymoon. Very relaxing and romantic setting. The only thing I really didn't like about this resort was Nami restaurant, the food was terrible and over priced. It's way better to go outside the resort for dining for real authentic Puerto Rican food. Also, for excursions, buy them outside the resort, its a lot less expensive."

"When I arrived I was told that the oceanfront red level room I had prepaid for had been overbooked and was unavailable. The staff was so kind to tell me that if I had arrived an hour earlier I would have be able to get the room I reserved. First come first served I guess. The staff was very apologetic and began the process of finding me another room. Since i had reserved ocean front I told them that is what I wanted. After about 45 minutes they escorted my wife and I to a room that overlooked the parking lot; I told them this was unacceptable and wanted oceanfront. After another 45 minute wait they took us to one of the time share suites that did in fact overlook the ocean. However, it was located on the opposite end of the property from where all of the red level amenities that I paid for took place. They give you a red bracelet and that is how you get into the proper areas. Come to find out, red level patrons aren't allowed to use any of the amenities in the time share area even though the staff told us we could go anywhere. After I explained my situation every time I wanted anything, i.e. use the pool, get a towel, even walk into a reception area, I was getting very frustrated with being on the wrong end of the complex. I went to security and also the the hotel manager about the problem. They said they would address it with the parties involved and it would be ok, well apparently everyone didn't get the memo and the next day was filled with the same frustrations. Finally on my last day I was given a blue bracelet which is what everyone in that area wore. I just wish they realized the situation from the get go and gave us the right color bracelet to begin with. The resort is spectacular and the staff was great but I think our situation could have been handled very differently."

"jUST RETURNED FROM 5 NIGHT STAY WITH SON AND GRANDDAUGHTER. WE RENTED CAR AND DID OUR OWN SIGHTSEEING AND LOVED THE BEAUTIFUL POOL!!! LOCATION GREAT! WISH THERE WAS CURTAIN BETWEEN SOFA BED AND OTHER BEDS FOR BETTER PRIVACY, BUT SERVICE WAS SUPERIOR AND ALL ELSE, INCLUDING PUERTO RICAN AND ITALIAN RESTAURANTS EXCELLENT.
RENTING CAR WAS A BIG PLUS FOR US AND WE DID MUCH SIGHTSEEING."

"We book this resort as a 'mystery resort' at a good price. While the grounds of the resort where very nice and everything was in close walking distance and the main pool was nice, I can't recommend this resort. I have stayed at several other resorts of this type. I found that the rooms where not truly clean, the resort was a little remote, so dining options other then the resort where very limited, the excursion prices where high. In addition, none of the ice machines around the resort worked properly, the quality of the food was marginal and expensive. The one bright spot was the staff of The Market, the ladies working there where friendly, efficient and made a very nice expresso. I would recommend doing research and finding another place to stay in Puerto Rico."

"I was very happy with the Gran Melia Resort. The property was beautiful and well maintained. The staff was wonderful as well- my husband and I plan on visiting other Gran Melia locations. My only issue was with bookit.com. I have never booked a trip on line before; this was my first time using an on line travel company. When I booked my trip I called and the bookit.com reservations person actually arranged my trip. I didn't realize that by booking a red eye flight that the date's wouldn't match our hotel check in. We basically paid for an extra day we didn't get. The Gran Melia check in person was very accomodating especially since when we checked in they had us on the 'no show' list."

"We had a terrific time at the Gran Melia resort. I would recommend it without hesitation. Staff were friendly, facilities were world class, the rooms were clean and bright. We had an ocean view room at the Red Level. There was nothing even remotely negative about the experience."

"We stayed in the Red Level suites and right out the the cab we were greeted like we were royalty. I was kind of confused when they took us to a separate check in location and offered beer, wine, champagne, water, etc but once I accepted the welcoming treatment I took advantage. The resort is beautiful and the staff was very helpful and accommodating. If you are upfront with them they will go out of their way to offer recommendations. If you go through their dragonfly activities planner it can be a lot more expensive so we call ourselves and saved $50 but they were helpful in figuring out what was they best way to get all the touristy things accomplished. The thing I enjoyed the most besides the relaxing environment was the staff informing you of all the amenities at the resort. They weren't pushy but you could always find staff walking around and they would let you know what was going on for the day or ask if you needed anything. We went in October and during the week it felt like we had the resort all to ourselves but it picks up on the weekend. Nothing ever felt over crowded. The only things that I could have been improved were the aged lounge chairs and the beach was rocky. Other than that I would recommend it!!!"

"Our honeymoon at the Gran Melia Golf Resort was phenomenal. We paid for a seaside view at the Red Level and it was worth every penny. The staff was efficient and extrmely helpful in helping us maximize all the amenities that came with our level of service. The experience was enhanced by the fact that we rented a car. The distance between the airport and the resort is significant and requires renting a car. This meant we could get away and enjoyed the rest of SanJuan along with the resort area. The only drar back to our stay was that we could swim in the beachfront property although we could swim in the private pool that near the ocean. Overall, the experience was terrific. I highly recommend the resort and will consider it for future stays."

"My husband and I recently stayed at the Gran Melia for our 30th anniversary. We stayed in a Red Level room for 'Royal Service'. Our room was nice and clean. Our first butler was excellent, after that there were a few problems. If you are like us and not 'needy' save the money. We weren't used to calling a butler for everything. However, there were some perks that I particularly liked, the adults only pool and the bali beds were great especially if you were like us and trying to get away from the kids you don't want to listen to someone else's kids! The food was excellent. If you are going for the beach, choose another as there is not a swimable beach. The evening coctails are misleading, there are no hor d' overs and the drinks are only if you can get the waiter's attention. Overall we had a great experience and the place was really beautiful."
