This was our 9th time staying at the Residence. When you arrive it is just like staying with family. All of the staff are so welcoming and seem so pleased to see you. Zita that looks after our room has been there since our first visit and does a first class job. The apartment is roomy, well equipped. There are good facilities on site a most enjoyable place to visit.

My wife and I have just spent another wonderful week at The Residence. With a spacious and comfortably appointed apartment affording gorgeous views across the gardens to the sea, what more could one want? The staff are, without exception, cheerful and helpful, and the owner's team -Tom, John, Claire and Sabine - simply can't be faulted. Add to that the wonderful restaurants and the delights of Madeira and we're already chomping at the bit to go back again in November!

Can't rate highly enough. Everything about The Residence and Porto Mare is exeptional. Cannot understand why it is only ****. It really should be upgraded to *****. Arrived on early flight with baby grandaughter and straightaway reception staff called housekeeping to ensure our room was quickly made ready. Without asking they made up cot. Pool staff in attendance with sun shades etc. We have been coming for 8 years and the gardens are always immaculate and this year was a credit to maint... Read more

It does not seem 9 years ago that we took out a 10 year time share contract with this hotel, and now we are facing our last year, next year. We have never been disappointed with our two week stay each year; its become our home for a short while in the lovely country of Madeira. Nothing stands still in Madeira for very long as there are always improvement going on, but this year the sound of silence was heard as never before as all work in Funchal and indeed in the Lido area adjacent to the hotel... Great hotel with lots to offer we enjoyed it so much we bought a time share their. Weather is also hot in July. And Madeira is lovely a nice and quiet and calm place with stunning views. Food and drink reasonably priced. There's a few excursion to see the old Madeira and the cable car is good to the botany gardens. A must is the catamaran you get to snorkel with the fish and the Dolphins come right up to the boat.

For me, Madeira is about peace, quiet & releaxation. We have a great time share apartment but the municipal park becomes a nuisance when virtually anything is staged there it is accompanied by way too loud music.50% of the volume would be more than enough and don't go on unt 11.30pm. Retaurants in Madeira are good but the ones that seem to want to bombard you with live music need to be careful. The music needs to be of a "background nature" because I don't want to scream across the table at my ... As comfortable as ever with friendly welcoming staff. We never tire of visiting and are never disappointed. Ate in The Med (one of our must do's each time) - it was the Meat Lovers Night and the food was excellent. Steak was so huge that the staff were happy to wrap what I couldn't manage - made a good salad the next day! We also enjoyed a pizza in Il Basilico.

Another wonderful week spent here. First time visited in June which was a lot quieter than August, therefore no shortage of sunbeds due to selfish reserving with towels.Lovely temperature. Occasionally needed a cardigan at night but better temperature during the day as far as I was concerned. Apartments and grounds impeccably maintained as always.

We just spent a week's holiday in The Residence. Everything met our expectations. Some things above expectations were: several affordable but great restaurants nearby, fantastic Med restaurant for more fancy dinner, several pools and very nice location by the sea. Residence is located closest to the sea and many of its rooms have a terrace into a closed private garden area with private sunchairs. Staff was very friendly and ... Read more

The vast majority of the service is excellent. There is only one but and it is the only thing holding me back from 5 stars. The hotel has to sort out the service at Veranda bar. People continue to get up at 6.30 in the morning to put towels down and then don't come back for several hours and stop others 2. If owners have to leave a room by 10.00 ,why do none owners have to leave by 12.00 ? 3 . Sad to see Tom leave , who has now gone to the Royal Savoy
