We didn't like the place we had booked so walked into Hotel do Carmo to see if they had room for us. Nadia at the desk was incredibly helpful and welcoming and everything was arranged with great efficiency. The hotel is a delight ... if you like the 1960s theme, which we did! The music, the photos, even the chairs and the little electric heater we borrowed (it was March) were all in keeping with that great decade. The room was clean, the breakfasts were hearty and the rooftop swimming pool was l... Read more

A very quiet, cozy and friendly hotel two steps from the center of Funchal. It's on a side street which can be crammed with cars really fast, so be on the lookout if you rent yours. There's nothing that can be said against it, given its three star rate. It shows that it's an older building which could use some renovation but don't let that stop you. I had a very quiet night, even if the windows don't completely seal the noise.

This is the second time we have stayed at this hotel which says a lot. Staff are so helpful and friendly nothing is too much trouble. Room was basic but light and airy bed was comfortable and fan was a godsend. We do not like air conditioning so this suited us. Location is very good as only a short walk to all amenities (shops, restaurants and bars). Only down side to Funchal is that there are quite a few homeless and beggars about.

This was the sixth time of staying at this centrally located hotel which is convenient for supermarkets, shopping, restaurants, buses, excursions and the port. However, what makes this hotel special for us is the staff. Over our visits they have become our friends who greet us with genuine hospitality and nothing is too much trouble. The hotel is clean and comfortable with a rooftop pool. There are some lovely views towards Monte from the rear rooms. If you are looking for a great value holiday,... Read more

The staff are very friendly and helpful in suggesting activities such as day trips around Madeira. The breakfast is very diversified ,healthy and well presented. The hotel is very well situated with a ten minute walk to the Mercado dos Lavradores, and other places of interest. Did not use the pool facilities but enjoyed the lounge with the small bar for relaxing activities and socializing should you wish. Will not hesitate to recommend this hotel to future vacationers.

There are already a lot of reviews saying this is a very good location, and I can absolutely confirm that. And despite of being 2 steps away from the historical centre of Funchal, with all the bars and restaurants, it is on a small and calm street, so, you can be sure you can relax when you need. We made this trip to Funchal to celebrate my wife's birthday. The nice receptionist noticed that when she got our documents to confirm the reservation. It was very nice to find a bottle of champagne wit... Read more

This hotel is a great 3 star and is a great base for a holiday to funchal/madeira. The hotel is right in the centre of funchal and everything is only a few minutes walk away. The hotel is spotless and all the staff are friendly and helpful. The gentleman who checked us in was really welcoming and we felt at ease immediately. WiFi was free and worked really well throughout the hotel, the room was a little small but everything was clean and comfortable. The best thing about this hotel is the ro... Read more

This isn't a luxury hotel, and it's not priced as such, but it is better in many ways: the personal touch, the hotel manager who remembers you every time you return, the location in the centre which means you can walk everywhere, the rooftop pool where you look over the heart of the city, the individual decor that doesn't comply with the standard black and beige everywhere else, the sights and sounds of ordinary local life - love it!

Old fashioned central hotel with 50s decor and very helpful staff. The rooftop pool, accessed by steps, has loungers and shower room but no towels so take your own! Breakfast was good, except for the coffee! (However, I found all coffee in Madeira very weak.) There's a quiet bar and a lounge with comfortable chairs. It was an easy walk to the old town with its great choice of restaurants. Also easy to access the buses to go all over the island plus a short walk to the cathedral, the cable car, ... Read more

My first impression when I walked in to the hotel was very cosy place, the staff on reception made me feel very welcome, they were very helpful, especialy Jose Carlos, who goes an extra mile to look after the guests. The room was very clean and there was a fresh smell. Good design, however there could be better food choice on breakfasts.

A value for money hotel. Very clean and well maintained by staff. Very dated in style but situation is excellent for marina and old townbars and restaurants. Staff were pleasant and helpful , breakfast was usual european style - fruit, yoghurt, meats and cheese, also hot food- bacon some days which was good quality. Bar and tv area with outside bar area( could be made more inviting). Can be bit noisy on street side but not too bad. Would definitely recommend having a balcony.

First time in Madeira and couldn't be more pleased. The hotel in particular was excellent and great value. All of the staff were extremely friendly and helpful and right from the start, providing a glass of sparkling wine on arrival, did everything they could to make our stay as easy and enjoyable as possible. Brilliant location just a few minutes walk from the old town, market and marina. Breakfast was excellent and really impressed with the way staff kept supplies topped up so there was plenty... The best thing about this hotel and the most important for me is it has a great location. Its only a short walk to the old town, the marina and to the bus stops if you want to go further. The rooms are nothing fancy but they are clean and comfortable, the only thing is I do like a fridge in the room which you get with most hotels but you don't here. The staff here are the other reason that this hotel is a good choice, they are extremely friendly and will do anything to help. The pool area is als... Read more

Excellent location, easy to walk to main sights. Continental breakfast was very generous. All staff were very helpful, the reception staff in particular. The room was very clean. Will definitely return!

Booked this hotel last minute thanks to the cynical efforts of a low cost holiday firm, leaving us with little choice to recover our holiday. The reviews on TA were encouraging so we booked it through TA. It is on a nice quiet street close to the centre of Funchal and we walked everywhere easily from here. The only long walk was to catch the ferry to Porto Santo and that is a good 25 minute walk to the terminal at the port. The staff are very friendly and we were welcomed into the hotel with a g... Myself and 3 friends were here for a week at the end of May/start of June, this was also my 2nd time at this hotel and the service was even better! The staff were so helpful in every aspect and generally lovely people. We had a 5 person who dropped out of the trip but I forgot to change the booking and nearly had an extra ?100 on my bill but the staff helped us out and let us not pay the extra charge. 10 minutes from central Funchal, great views from the pool (which is perfect for this hotel),... The hotel was disappointing. The decor doesn't quite pull of retro chic and just looks dated and tawdry. The rooms are small with no air conditioning. They are, however, kept immaculately clean. The breakfast was very basic but there was plenty of it. The staff are the saving grace. They are polite and helpful and the sole reason that I have given this three stars. I definitely would only book this hotel if you get an amazing deal and don't plan to spend much time in it. A definite no return.

Not the most luxurious hotel but comfortable and a good breakfast. We had no hotel booked when we arrived (because our hotel was booked through lowcostbeds which had gone bankrupt or more likely the boss decided to cash his chips in).Antonio was fantastic he found us a room for 2 nights and said to go for lunch and our room would be ready when we returned. When we returned he said we could have the room for 9 nights. The hotel is situated right in the centre of Funchal loads of shops supermarket... Read more

Not the most modern hotel but very comfortable rooms and good breakfast; ideal place to put your head down after a busy day. The rooftop pool had good views of the city and felt very private. All staff were very friendly and seemed genuinely interested in our experiences. One thing we did not expect however, was the added charge to use the room's safe. I think this is the only place I have stayed where the safe hasn't come as an essential with the room.

Theme of the hotel was the 60''s, which was fun. Room was clean. Balcony overlooked a road with no views so not really worth having. Good choice of breakfast. Evening meal in hotel very basic and not good value for money. Outside eating area was often used by smokers so not pleasant for non smokers. Good location to the town centre. Friendly receptionists. Pool on roof terrace is nice with great views at night but not used in the evenings, it would be good to sit and have a drink up there.
