Several appt blocks around along a road, nice gardens. We were in block G, which is directly opposite the access way to the pool, bars etc. We had a partial sea view, so thought we'd done well with this. However, we found on a night that it was very noisy (most nights, not all), due to people coming back from the entertainment area by the pool, very late and being very noisy, kids shouting etc. There was a very high Portugese presence and we saw many children besides themselves, tired late evening, but being made to stay up as late as possible by their parents, with the result being they were over tired, therefore very irritable come midnight and beyond. There should be some kind of noise curfew given that its a family resort. This, combined with the fact that any sliding window (balcony door and bedroom) didn't have any form of seal, meant that there was a gap between the windows / window & wall, big enough to fit your fingers through, so it was just like sleeping on the street - you could hear everything so were unable to go to sleep until the last people had decided to retire to their rooms...! We came to actually dread the later part of the evening.... We even complained to reception regards the room above, coming in very late & very noisy, then disturbing us again very early in the morning (4:45am on the day we complained) by walking around with shoes on the tiled floors, banging doors, scraping furniture etc. We appreciate that there will be some noise, but this was too much. Reception advised that the Portugese staying in the room were actually leaving later that day, so we left it at that and thankfully, things quietened down after that. You cant blame the hotel for inconsiderate people, but they were willing to respond to our complaint quickly.
We found the poolside to be a little tatty. The large mosaic type of surface was uneven, with pools of water constantly present, the mortar between these breaking up in places & a bit too much litter / cigarette butts for our liking. However, we never struggled to find an uncomfy sunbed (no cushions), the pool did get a bit busy at times, but not overcrowded & overall the atmosphere there was pleasant.
We found reception staff excellent, always on hand to help. The restaurant & bar staff were always very busy & looked very fed up. The poolside bar constantly had a large queue & it seemed at times that the staff were not at all happy that you'd asked them for something.
Entertainment staff were pretty good. Didn't hassle you, but tried to encourage you to join in. It took me 3 days however to discover that there was actually a kids club there & this was by accident, only when I was walking around exploring the grounds. Entertainment started quite late, with the kids disco starting at 9pm, then some form of entertainment afterwards. We were a bit bored on an evening & despite being all inclusive, decided to eat out one evening, purely for a change of scenery & food......that leads to the restaurant itself. Very busy at most times, the food was actually pretty good, though a little 'samey' but we expected that given the numbers that they are catering for, Good selection of salads, veg, main meals, so we never struggled. We have ensured our children (10 & 6) aren't fussy either, so they were happy to help themselves from day 1. Staff very quick to remove plates & glasses from your table, even a few times before my kids had actually finished - maybe they could just wait a little..?
We counted 134 steps to the beach, which was a bit of a slog in 30 degree temperatures, but worth the effort, as beach was lovely. We didn't find too much in the resort itself, except for a great restaurant that the reception staff recommended. The name escapes me, but serving good traditional Portugese food (& more), we had a lovely, very reasonably priced meal here one evening.
Rooms were quite basic, exactly what we expected. Absolutely fine, as its just a base, somewhere to (try to) sleep etc. No issues in this regard.
We visited Aquashow, which the kids loved, but at 132 Euros incl transport, I thought it a but steep and we spent most of the day queuing....
All in all, this was our first visit to the Algarve and we loved the area, but our conclusion is that we will not go less than 4* if we return. We dont holiday regularly, so cannot comment whether this was typical of a 3* or not, but personally, we will look at 4* from here.
