This is a modest hotel in a good location. The rooms were clean and unexceptional and the staff were all helpful. We were able to walk to dinner at Hopgoods, and also to the Saturday morning markets. The wifi system that we have encountered elsewhere in NZ does my head in... free entitlement lasts about 5 mins...why bother?!?

Had such a wonderful stay at the Rutherford in Nelson, The hotel is so clean and tidy and the rooms are so fresh and well maintained, Staff are so warm, welcoming & friendly, The location is great, short walk from the main streets and heaps of cafes and restaurants around the area and only short walk away. Free wifi is available in the rooms but only limited however if you use the allotted limit, you can call reception & request for a new password, Breakfast is available but at an added cos... Stayed two nights. Nice hotel in good location and near many amenities. Comfy foyer with the old charm ambiance. Rooms are standard size and very clean, with choice of pillows. Staff were always willing to help.

Hotel is spacious, has modern feel and is equipped with restaurant and bar. All the necessary requirements to meet and conduct business. It's located near enough to restaurants and downtown shops to quickly walk. The rooms are well equipped and comfortable. Very good place to stay for business in the region.

I stayed here for 3 nights. The rooms were spotless and the beds were comfortable enough. The over bath shower was a little disappointing - the shower head being too low. Breakfast was not really good enough for the price tag. The cooked buffet selection was rather limited. Although what there was, was well cooked and tasted good.

This place has apparently been refurbished. It certainly has a very grand entrance, with a water fountain in the foyer that reflects an elegance of yesteryear. The room I was in was larger than many modern hotel rooms with a double and single bed. A small writing desk was also available. The place is immaculate, quiet and even offers a variety of pillows on order. That is superb service! The bathroom was also a good size with an over bath shower and a neat glass partition instead of those hor... Read more

I really like the Rutherford. In need of a freshen up, but central, comfortable and friendly. The on premises Japanese restaurant is very good, and the a la carte breakfast menu is short but effective. Rooms are a good size, and perfect for a quick business trip. Bathroom was clean, but probably the most in need of renovation. All up a very pleasant stay.

Nothing special of a hotel, clean and tidy. Only downside is when we arrived the receptionist (trainee) forgot to take our credit card details, and afterwards kept hassling us by calling the room after we said we would be down later. Fairly central to the town. Town seemed quiet and there were kids/ adults running around all hours of the night as Mcdonald's is across the road, open 24/7.

Lovely place to stay. very clean great reception service. At breakfast staff were efficient but not happy. The coffee was lovely at Cafe downstairs and the girl very pleasant . I have to ask why the flush button on the toilet is directly behind the lid . So I had to close lid every time to flush. so annoying. It was great to be so central to nelson city

I was gifted this voucher from friends, my wife and I and another couple headed to the restaurant to cash it in and what a wonderful evening we all had. Great food from starter, to entree, to main and then desert. The chef put his own slant across all the dishes and they just excellent with everybody at the table agreeing. Also the wine selection recommended during our gustation was very well received by all at our table. I can certainly recommend and knowing what the voucher cost we all think t... Read more

The Rutherford is a very good place to hold a conference. The staff were extremely helpful and capable. Nothing was a problem. The meals were very good given the number of people they had to cater for.

We spent two nights here after getting the ferry across from Wellington and found everything to be of a good standard. The room was large, clean and tidy with nice views over Nelson. The staff were friendly and efficient and we used room service once, which also very nice. Overall it was a very good choice of places to stay.

Stayed a number of times at the Rutherford which still leads the way in Nelson, good size warm bedroom on a cold nelson evening, nice and close to the CBD for going out for tea etc, Had breakfast in the morning and again pretty good, would make one small comment about the bread, could improve the quality as it looked like 99c bread you would get at pak n save. Overall good service and defo stay again

This is the only real hotel in Nelson but it suffers from that fact and the lack of real competition. Whilst the reception area is quite modern the reception. Staff know how to make the checkin process more difficult than it needs to be. Also when checking out they wouldn't charge the credit card taken at checkin unless the person who presented it was present. Rooms are ok, although showing their age, but functional.

Looks like a 80's office block from the outside, but once you step inside it is a professional welcoming hotel. Rooms were large & clean with good facilities, only concern was the shower over bath which sprayed wildly but lacked pressure. Great location, centre of town & places to eat close by.

what a lovely place to stay, the rooms are very comfortable and regarding location you couldnt get anywhere closer to town. Staff very welcoming and helpful love the cafe downstairs. Tried both restaurants and the food was great.

Last stay was back in the 1980's but was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this Establishment. Room was of a very high standard and the quality fittings have either stood the test of time or replaced in keeping with original standards. Front desk and dining room service was of a very high standard. Recommended.

Attended a conference at the Rutherford Hotel. This was a superb venue for this, and the staff gave a polished and obviously well practiced performance in support of the conference. The service, noise levels, food quality were all excellent. It was neat to note that as the door opened from the service area while they bought food out, the sign on the other side reminding staff there was a conference in session. I could not fault the layout they use for conferencing. The same could be said about ... Read more

Opened in 1972 by "Big Norm" the Rutherford has worn well and offers excellent facilities and services. Right in the middle of town it's well located and has a great feel about it Good food. Great surroundings.

This was the first time here. Obviously it's an icon that has been added to and refitted over the years. The service was excellent and the room really comfortable and well fitted out. Some nice touches to add value to the visit. The hotel is close to the centre of town.

Nice view from the corner room. Clean room. Restaurants are expensive and I didn't see the cafe open once. Needs a bit of maintenance as our room leaked around the Windows but i'm sure they will get onto that. Would stay again if I was down that way.

So central you walk out the door and you are in the city amongst the dining quarter. Staff are very courteous and professional. The cleaning standard is exceptional. Options to dine in either restaurant onsite, and a cafe although this wasn't open on the weekend we visited. One minor complaint, the cleaning personnel were early in knocking on the door, and would unlock the door and walk in, a little disruptive for a romantic getaway.
