This Motel was very clean and comfortable. Check in was easy. Stayed there when The Stranglers played at the Arena. It was a great venue with a bar right next door. Only five minutes walk away. Nice walk to the shops and restaurants. About 2km. Nice and quiet area with a few take away restaurants near by. Will be back.

Arena Motel What a great place to stay.So close to the Horncastle Arena, hence the name I guess. The studio unit we had was very clean, the bed was comfortable and the room was nice and warm. That was something us Northlanders didn't really think about when travelling that far down the island, so the heater was great. The host Jessica was really pleasant and helpful, and was genuinely interested in our stay. We would stay here again in a heartbeat, and not just to attend events at the arena. We ... Read more

Motel was clean and staff friendly. Very close and convenient to the TranzAlpine railway station (but not really anything else) Shower was difficult to work though and ended up lukewarm with fairly low pressure.

We had booked a 2 bedroom unit and the first night we were upstairs which was a little hard for one person in our party to navigate, so the owner, Jessica, moved us to the downstairs 2 bedroom unit for the 2nd night. We much preferred the downstairs unit as it was bigger and had a king bed in one of the bedrooms versus a double bed in the upstairs unit. Everything was clean and we enjoyed our stay. They have a laundry room that you pay for the washers and dryers but it is very handy. There ... Read more

We stayed here on our first night as we were going on Trans Alpine rail the next Day. The room was very clean and comfortable. Bed was good, bathroom good & room was very quiet & Just a short walk to a pub for tea. Our hostess was very friendly and even though suffering from the flu she rustled up a continental breakfast to tie us over until we got on the train as we are early risers. In the morning she rounded all of us up who were traveling on the train and ran us to the station in her mini bu... Read more

Stayed here on 2 separate occasions in the same trip in June, and was impressed by the friendliness of the host and the cleanliness and comfort of the place. She was always ready to offer advice regarding taking the metro and dining options as well. One may find it inconvenient to get to if one is not self-driving or coming by the Christchurch Railway Station, but it is definitely a reliable and comfortable lodging option!

This was a great place to stay before your trip on the Tranz Alpine Train. The accommodations are comfortable and everything you need is provided for you. We had 3 adults (1 couple and 1 single) and we stayed very comfortably in the apartment style room. There weren‚??t a whole lot of extra frills, but we had everything we needed and the staff put it over the top. Jessica greeted us when we arrived and was wonderful. She got us all checked in and gave us all the information we needed about wifi,... Read more

As what other reviewers have mentioned, this motel provides a convenient overnight stay if you're planning to catch the early morning Tranzalpine train ride. There is a free shuttle service that you can arrange at the reception. This place is located on the outskirts of the city hub, so it's close to large retail warehouses but further from central sights like Botanic Gardens and Cathedral Square. Lincoln street provides some decent cafe options. The room itself on the second storey is clean and... Read more

Arena Motel is in an excellent location. It is near the station for the scenic TranzAlpine Christchurch to Greymouth Scenic Rail, and transfers to the station are complimentary. The shops and cafes are also within a 5-minute walk. Online booking, check-in and out were done efficiently and always with a warm smile. We were in a studio unit that was clean and comfortable.

Jessica was friendly and welcoming. Our unit was quiet, spacious, clean and tidy and the bed was really comfortable. The décor was lovely. We made use of their free shuttle too and from the railway station to do the Transalpine trip - Christchurch to Greymouth. We would definitely stay there again and can recommend the Arena Motel.

I see why people complain about staying here with the road noise. We stayed in the far room closet to the road but it didn't bother us if the windows and doors are closed. It did take a while for the room to heat up but when it did it was good. And having the train only 5 mins away was awesome.

Stayed here overnight before being shuttled to the railway station for the Tranz Alpine. Owners were very friendly and the accommodation was ideal. Close to restaurants etc for a nice meal that evening as well. Taxi cost us $40 from the airport to motel which between 4 of us was very reasonable. Would highly recommend this accommodation

Easy access to train station. Comfortable warm room with all requirements. Not flash but perfect for a comfortable stay. Very friendly staff and even offered to take us to the train station for the Transalpine train which we went on.

I booked into the Arena Motel and upon entering was immediately impressed by the spaciousness of the one bedroom unit. In the main living area there is a sofa, desk and chair, table and three chairs, and a single bed. The additional kitchen area (part of living area) had a refrigerator, hotplate and microwave, plus sufficient crockery and cutlery to be able to prepare a meal. In the bathroom there was a shower with gas water heating, and a spa bath (normal bath size, suited to one person). In th... Read more

Run by a hard working owner, who is full off local knowledge and information, if you ask. She's happy to collect from the train station. We followed her hints and tips and found all we were looking for including some local restaurants and a trip to the new start mall. LARGE room that had everything we wanted. EXCELLENT included WIFI, really good shower system it heats at the point of use so hot water on demand - nice:-)

Very nice place and Jessica has the knack of personal service. It is extremely well located, just a short walk to lots of places to eat. Clean place and reasonably priced. Great wifi that is free and unlimited.

Slightly nicer for a motel. It was not what I was expecting based on previous reviews but it worked for our one night stay. There aren't many options in Christchurch so this one seemed to be one of the best options. It is definitely a motel.

Given the price, the motel is up to standard. The best thing is that it provide free shuttle service to train station for the transalpine train to Greymouth, which is something that we need. There are plenty of food option within 10 min walk. However, it is far from Christchurch city center.

If what you want is somewhere clean, comfortable and welcoming to recover from jet lag and to sort yourself out ready for the next step of your journey, then this is ideal. No frills but no problems either. Lovely and helpful welcome. Nowhere nearby to get provisions but only a 20 minute walk to the centre of Christchurch.

This is a very clean, modest motel that is close to the train station and thus super convenient. The owner is very nice and accommodating. She met our train in the evening and took us back to catch the morning Transalpine. Could not have been more helpful, and we really appreciated it. Also, many choices nearby where you can walk to dinner. Perfect place to stay between train trips.

We had three separate one night stays here on our recent five week trip to NZ as we used Christchurch as an overnight stop off point as we moved around the country. It is a comfortable, practical motel. Certainly well located for the railway station, but also sufficient eating places available within ten minutes walk. Rooms and parking good, but the star of the show is Jessica who is the perfect host and helpful in every way (including a free shuttle to the station). We can definitely recommend.
