We usually stay with friends in Amsterdam, but this time decided to stay more centrally in a "good" hotel. Great location for this hotel, but that's where the good stuff ends. From outside it looks shabby. As you walk in it's dark and grubby and unwelcoming. Staff are ok. Lifts look like a DIY project that's not been finished. Carpets are similar to those in an old pub. Walls are all dirty, chipped and in need of repainting. Really the WHOLE PLACE NEEDS TO BE REFURBISHED. Rooms are just horrible... Read more

We did not have any problems here, was expecting the worst based on reading previous reviews. Check in/out was no problem, room was clean and comfortable and house keeping was good. Breakfast was very good (included with room rate) Staff very pleasant and helpful The hotel does need a refurb but the location was ideal for our trip and we would stay here again,we didn't see any signs of previous reviewers complaints

We have choosen this hotel for a weekend stay in Amsterdam and it has been a very bad choice because it is not value for money. I want to specify that I work in hotel and in particular I used to work in Nh hotels so I perfectly know what I am talking about. We have spent more than 200? per night to have a very small and old room with a tiny bathroom without a fan or window, it is the worst Nh room where I have never been. I enjoyed a week at the Carlton before starting my cruise. I was given a fair sized quiet room on the seventh floor with a pleasant view of the main thoroughfare. Nice bathroom with all the expected amenities. The price obtained from one of the specialized website was very appealing. I was minutes away from the museums, the Concertgebouw , restaurants, shops and cinemas, especially the wonderful Tuschinski theater. The service was always prompt and courteous. Close to perfect location to discover Amsterdam. Near the shopping street, close to many restaurants and the channels are right outside the door. The hotel shows signs of being a bit worn. Decent room, but no view (right to a backyard). Were rumors that it was the start of major renovation work soon. Hard to find the breakfast room, as well as the lift was not working, so difficult for disabled persons. Good breakfast. Nice and helpful staff. Great burger restaurant right next door.

The staff is friendly, and the location of the hotel is great. Only minutes away from the Central Station, and 4 tram lines within 5 minutes walking distance. The interior of the rooms however is very tired, and whilst clean, it's in desperate need of a major overhaul/renovation (the entire hotel, that is). The large bed is comfortable. The housekeeping staff needs to be more attentive. Various items were not restocked even after 3 days (toilet paper, coffee, tissues) and we had to specifical... Read more

We stayed at this hotel for the past week. It is very centrally located and easy to find from the Central Train Station. The flower market and a shopping street are right alongside the hotel. There are several places to eat and a movie theatre directly across the street. We walked everywhere we wanted to go. We had a standard room for ?200 per night inc City Tax, and it was really not worth that. The room faced onto the street, and there was constant noise until the small hours, traffic, drunks and police. The windows, apart from being filthy, were odd. A small one that opened at the top, a great slab of concrete in between, then another window below it. Stayed here for 3 nights. Not sure if it was the lack of staff, even though they were very friendly, but everything was kind of slow. The cleaning lady was friendly. I originally stayed here 2 nights and wanted to extend my stay one more night, the only annoying thing was that I had to come down to the reception, wait an hour because it was crowded, then walk up to the clerk, check if there's availability and make the change, I didn't understand why they couldn't check it over the phone while I ... Well located with bars, flower market etc nearby but not especially high standard at the price. Bland, tired and small rooms serve to accentuate this. The twin beds were narrow, uncomfortable, squeaky with little space either side. Oddly there is a huge modern flat screen TV on the wall. The rooms don't come with an iron provided. You have to schlep up to a little room on the top floor. Best make sure you've ironed your shirts. Breakfast is expensive for an average buffet style affair. I was... Read more

This was a pick by our travel agency, as I was late again for the exhibition preps. But it was very nice to stay in NH Carlton. The location is very convenient. Facilities are adequate for a business stay in a city hotel. We made short walks to diners and sight seeings. But the access was also convenient by car, from the airport and the RAI convention center. One star drops due to expensive breakfast. We found cheaper but elegant spots which were open early. I am convinced with the quality of th... Read more

his is suposed to be a 4* hotel but it's 3* maximum. The room I've stayed in was really dated (and hotel in general is not better). Official pictures looks great but they are far from reality (good photographer, they should give her/ him a bonus). The room was like from the early 80s, rug was so dirty and shaby that should have been replaced at least 5 years ago. Air condition was pretty loud. In bath the drain was barely working and there's a short shower curtain which let water falls to the fl... Read more

nice rooms not small, we were at 7th floor so with a very nice view and balcony. very great place close to a place with restaurants, bars and coffee shops, flower markets, 10 min walk to place Dam. As central in city, it is noisy from outside activity, no noise inside.

Within easy walking distance of Dam Square. Plenty of restaurants and bars nearby. Hotel ideal for short break. Toiletries replenished every day. Our standard room wasn't huge but adequate for our couple of nights stay. Plenty of selection for breakfast. Staff very welcoming. Would stay here again.

Amazing, carefree service! The staff at NH Carlton were warm and friendly and very accommodating! Even had a cheeky upgrade which was extremely kind of them. We were on a high floor so our views from the balcony were incredible! It made such a difference to our trip that the hotel was clean and luxurious and the staff were very helpful and kind!

The room was a bit dirty still and we asked for the sofa bed to be set up which never was. The guy at the reception said on arrival it should be set up for us but it wasnt. Apart from that the place was relatively nice. Would expect better from a "4 star hotel" though. The rooms were dated and in need of a fresh paint job.

The room 7 th floor didn't smell good and it was up to date. The carpet had old stains. I liked the breakfast. The location was great and the lobby service was fast. Thus nobody greeted me when I stepped into the hotel after my work days or in the evenings.

Very well it located, but it is old and doesn't look as if it did not receive proper maintenance, such as deep cleaning and fumigation. Attached you will find a photo of an insect that I saw 3 times: 1 in the closet, 1 in the curtain and 1 in the bathroom floor. It was the same type of insect. It was like a small centipede. In addition, the comforter was dirty inside. The company I work (DSM) was who decided to stay in this hotel; however, I will share these observations with them in order to ... Read more

This was my first visit to Amsterdam for business and to attend the IBC Conference and Exhibition which takes place at the RAI Conference Centre in the South of Amsterdam. The hotel location is excellent - on the tram route to RAI (or for the more energetic within walking distance) and close to the city Centre for after hours activities (restaurants, shopping, etc). Hotel itself is OK - no Wow to be honest, but also no issues at all. Check-In / Check-Out was efficient, the room was clean and ade... Read more

This hotel is in a very central location beside the flowermarket. We had a room on the 6th floor with a balcony however the carpet was very badly stained and faded and the room in general needed some tlc. At 5am on Tuesday morning we were awakened by the binmen who took around 30 minutes to move out of the street making a very loud noise. There was a very good choice for continental breakfast, however the hot buffet which consisted of scrambled egg, bacon and sausage was always cold so not very ... Read more

We arrived at the NH Carlton early at 11am on Friday morning. Luckily when we got there 1 out of 3 of our rooms were available. We all dumped our bags in the one ready room and set out for a full day of sight seeing! 6pm we arrive back at the hotel, baring in mind check in is at 2pm, only 1 out of the 2 rooms we were waiting for was ready. Disgruntled, myself and my boyfriend went for a walk to the local supermarket (we were told it would be half an hour), we arrived back at the hotel at 6:30pm ... Read more

Value for money is of course very relevant to the general cost of living in the city and I guess in Amsterdam this is pretty high. Still, at more than 200 euros a night, you have to be able to expect a greater level of cleanliness. The carpet in our non-smoking room clearly told the story of its smoking past and some previous clients had left the stickers from their suitcase on the bathroom door - possibly as a test to check the cleaning staff. They failed, partly because they only arrived when ... Read more

we orderd a deluxe room and when we checked in we got message that this was a really nice room and more as a suite. The room was big with sitting group and a small kitchenette and a bathroom. but everything was so dirty that we did not feel like using it. The chair and sofa were full of stains, the carpet was full of stains, and looked not nice. all tables and bathroom was dirty. we got a new room day after. they said it was a deluxe but smaller. Big and old hotel. The restaurant is sufficient. The hotel needs a complete lifting...broken windows, damaged walls. The final idea is not positive and it's a pity, it could be really better with a minimum effort. Central and good position to visit the city centre

This hotel was in a good location (to the street car, train, museums, shopping, etc). The rooms were small but clean and comfortable. The rooms that overlook the street get a lot of street noise. The breakfast was great, with a huge selection of delicious food (add that on during reservations, or when checking in... well worth the price).

The staff, location and breakfast are all excellent! The rooms are tired and could really use some remodeling. Our bathroom countertop was broken and sharp. There were some damaged walls etc. The room was clean and it was large with a sofa sleeper, perfect for 3 girls! I would stay here again, especially knowing what to expect!

The location of this hotel was great. Very central and I was able to walk everywhere I needed to go. The room is a very typical European room, and it's TINY. Could barely fit my suitcase in the room. The beds were comfortable - a great place to get over the jetlag. The curb appeal is lovely, and the area felt safe at night.

Hotel location is great and the balcony is great as well. The staff are very nice. For a 4 stars hotel we did not get what was promised. The room was very small, not like the pictures. No sitting area, no sofa. The pillows ware in a bad shape, and the towels was very old. It feels like this hotel need serious renovation. The water in the shower did not drain properly and after 5 min shower I had a half full bath. Although the location is really great, it is not justify the expensive price.

This hotel is very good also very central to everthing in Amsterdam. The rooms are very spacious and very clean as rooms are cleaned daily. Would highly recomend this hotel. Just one final point, the staff at the help desk are also very helpfull and polite. Thanks for reading.

Although it would require a renovation in most of the rooms and lounges, the best thing of the hotel is the location. It's just around the corner of the Flower Market and a 5-10 minutes walking to most interesting part of Amsterdam. Staff was also nice and very helpful in all our requests.

Well located hotel but the decor, carpets etc in some areas is old and tired. The room itself was spacious with a comfortable bed and a good sized bathroom. The breakfast was very good with friendly attentive staff. The most disappointing aspect of the trip was my experience at check in/check out. I was struggling to carry a large, heavy suitcase plus a wheelie bag, laptop and other bag and was not offered any assistance in carrying to and storing the heavy suitcase in the left luggage facility,... The condition that this hotel is in given that it's supposed to be four stars and considering the 220? and up price per night is absolutely unacceptable. We were switched three times to different rooms, 708, 608, and 540 all in the same unclean state, and all with an unpleasant smell in the rooms. The front desk assistant was quite helpf... Read more

Good comfortable hotel situated in Central Amsterdam which gives you access to all the major features and landmarks including the flower market and many eating places on its doorstep, this is the hotels biggest asset. The hotel is also well served by local trams should you wish to travel further afield.
