Nice spacious room with 2 double beds, clean bathroom - poor selection of food for a late arrival, everywhere in Amsterdam stops serving food at about 9 0'clock therefore it would be good if the hotel could take this into consideration and offer more of a variety. Friendly staff

We stayed here for a 3 night break. We adore Amsterdam and have visited many times. For me this is one of the best hotels. It's in the centre of the Lidesplien area. You have tram and bus stops right outside the hotel - hop on a tram and you are in Dam Square in 5 minutes. Lidesplien itself is Amazing! Shopping, Resturants, Cafes and Bars - beautiful! The hotel is truly stunning - one of the oldest buildings in Amsterdam itself. Reception staff were very nice, happy to assist with anything and ... Read more

Located in the Leidseplein area of Amsterdam, it is very close to Centraal Station and the many sites the old City has to offer. There are a number of trams that go by the Hotel making it very convenient to the entire city. Restaurants are within very short walks of the hotel and the variety of international venues is almost overwhelming. You will not need a car if you stay here. The staff was friendly and very helpful. I just had a very nice time at the Hampshire American. The room was lovely - I had a balcony view over the canal and everything was clean and comfortable. The location was great if a bit touristy but I walked easily to Museumplein and really enjoyed this part of the city. I had a difficult time choosing hotels and used trip advisor to help me make the choice. I walked by the hotel that I didn't choose and saw that in fact it had a much nicer lobby and was a MUCH more inviting location. I wis... Read more

If you are interested in a hotel that is a bit out of the ordinary then this hotel is for you. Built in the Art Nouveau era it still has plenty of period details including an Art Deco restaurant. On the night we arrived they were throwing a Great Gatsby night. We (husband and I) are always looking for Art Nouveau or Art Deco hotels or restaurants. If dinner seems at bit pricey at the American Hotel opt for the plentiful buffet breakfast. The position of the hotel is perfect for the museums..... Read more

It was different from what I expected but service at the reception was friendly and good. This made up even for the room which overlooked the backside of the hotel, that is basically nothing at all. The room was expensive given the standard of it all. It had all it needed, but not necessarily in way that makes you feel at home. Free Wifi, and that was ok, and a mini bar which was equipped well. Two couples stayed at your hotel post river cruise. We loved the location slightly away from the busy old town area yet close enough to walk to everything and right on a canal. Our rooms were spacious and well appointed. Very quiet and able to sleep in a bit after our hectic week on the river. Best of all was how helpful the staff was giving directions, recommending restaurants, arranging transportation and greeting us every time we walked in the door with a smile.

Very happy with our choice of hotel for our first visit to Amsterdam. Right on the canal next to Leidesplein, it's only a short walk to the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and various eateries nearby. Our room was on the mezzanine floor (one below 1/F) and looked out onto the street behind which was quiet at night ensuring a good sleep. We were offered an upgrade to front canal view for 30 Euros extra. Breakfast was not included in our price so we did not try it. The room itself was spacious altho... Read more

When we arrived they had lost the booking, it took about 10 minutes to seat us. When the food arrived it has egg sandwiches, we specified no eggs. When the waiter placed the food on our table he knocked my water all over the table. He did not return to clean it up. I had to call a waiter over to help me mop up the table! Not e... Read more

We did some research before booking and chose the American Hotel based on the room, the location and the beauty of the building, which is truly an Amsterdam landmark. However, upon arrival we were quite disappointed. We decided to take public transit (streetcar) from the airport to the hotel, based on the recommendation on the hotel's website which stated it would be easy and the stop is right in front of the hotel. This seems to be true in general. However, currently the hotel is surrounded o... Read more

The room I booked originally was the disabled room as this was the only one they could offer with a walk-in shower. However, it was dark and needed refurbishment so changed to another, newer room and had to overcome difficulties climbing in and out of the bath. Why do hotels not offer rooms with showers- so much more practical? There is major construction work all over Leidesplein at the moment so it makes it trickier getting to tram stops, etc. However, the hotel staff were very friendly and th... Read more

Stayed here for four days in November. Whilst we thoroughly enjoyed our stay it was marred on the first night by an excavator working beneath our window all night. Alas we were not informed of this on check in. We were in room 9. We complained that night and unfortunately no other was room available. After a sleepless night we were moved to room 442. What a huge change. No noise at all. Apart from that breakfast is great value at the pre booking price of ?15. Great selection and nice amb... Read more

Excellent Hotel with good clean room with excellent mattress and modern bathroom. Got through to wake-up call operator on the first try. Room was ready early. Restaurant attached to the Hotel was excellent. Lobby had private space to wait for room and good fast internet.

I planned a trip for my fiancées 30th birthday. The hotel was beautiful, staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The bar and food facilities had a great atmosphere. Breakfast was buffet style and delicious. We had our evening meal in the restaurant on our last night and it was sensational. The only thing I was a little disappointed about was that I wasn't informed of the masses of road/tram work going on around the hotel. However it didn't ruin our trip and the windows were so thick we didn'... Read more

In a good central position. Hotel old style, with the classical fashion, but due to the applied fares I honestly expected much more. The rooms are ok, but in my opinion below the 4stars level. Ok the position, but too much carpets everywhere, bathroom old. Ok breakfast, in the morning a sympathic mous run through our feet while we were sitting.

Liked the location and staff services. Room cleaning was as adorable. Also the massage center was good. Couldn't rate the restaurant due to out of hotel meals. Hotel location near the attractions in the city centre made our trip fabulous.

Hotel located in a strategic position where you perceive the splendor of a distant past, today no longer present. The reception staff and concergie is very nice and helpful, not so the guy at the breakfast. The room was spacious, but perhaps along with the bathroom could do with a makeover. Overall, the assessment is positive, although for the price paid in Amsterdam you can find better.

a classic hotel, nice staff, lots of staff, ordinary room, nice breakfast. Some major construction work done in the streets in front of the hotel per nov 2016, but no real problem as you wouldn't sit outside anyway. But; It could disturb you at night, so ask for room by the canal. The bar downstairs is dated. The rest of the hotel is ordinary, but nice. The staff made the biggest difference on the +side

Probably our 15th time to stay at this centrally located hotel. Excellent as always. Friendly and helpful staff. Michel, Roger and Sarah are always good fun in the bar. We have already booked to go back in 3 weeks and also in February.. Highly reccommend

We loved the hotel, though the breakfast was on the expensive side and the wifi rendered utterly worthless. The gym was not quite up to scratch, very small and with old equipment. Close distance from many nice places, and the airport bus 197 stops just outside.

At first we thought the hotel might be a bit too far removed from the centre of Amsterdam but once we got our bearings, the walk was very good. And the surrounding area has a lot going for it - restaurants, museums, bars, ... Our room was very spacious and very comfortable. Hotel staff were pleasant and very helpful. The building itself has an interesting history. Would definitely stay here again.

The hotel is centrally located in Leidesplein withing walking distance of the Rijks and Van Gogh museums. The rooms are decorated in art-deco style. Rooms are spacious and clean with good size bathroom, desk area, tea/coffee making facilities, minibar, iron and plenty of sockets which are needed these days. Robyn and Mandy at reception were most helpful.

Super hotel. Comfortable beds. Amazing breakfast. Free wi-fi. Free loaner umbrellas. Convenient location for both walking (walking distance to rijksmuseum) and for trams, canal boats, and airport shuttle (bus 197). Friendly staff and very service oriented. The main square/intersection adjacent to the hotel was undergoing extensive roadwork so was inconvenient with regards to pedestrian detours and some tram stops, but to no fault of the hotel and will no doubt be a temporary issue. The hotel is cosy with its own charm. Spacious rooms well furnished with adequate furniture. The double bed is really a double bed . Very conveniently placed if you are arriving fro Schiphol airport since bus 197 drops you almost at the Hotel's doorstep (Leidseplein). There was lot of roadworks / construction work at Leidseplein when we were there, and that may be disturbing, something the Hotel has no control whatsoever.

This hotel is perfectly placed for first-time visitors to Amsterdam - major areas of the city can be covered on foot, and great museums, restaurants and shops are steps away. Hotel front desk staff members are knowledgeable and service-oriented. Exterior balcony rooms facing the canal are worth the 30 Euro up-charge from interior rooms, especially in warmer months. Rooms are clean and well-appointed, though small with well-organized (yet limited) storage. Beds and linens are comfortable with... Read more

Stayed here for the weekend with a friend. The hotel is in a grand, architecturally interesting building and was well presented and decorated with some beautiful original features on the main stairs. The room itself was quiet with a comfortable bed and thick curtains that kept the room dark. The decor in the room was starting to get a little faded (scratches in the bath, ok but not great shower), but nothing terrible. Overall a great choice and in a perfect location. Hotel is lovely although room was very dark and we seemed to pay a heavy premium by booking in advance. Hotel is in nice location and reception were really helpful and friendly. We stayed here for 2 nights. We had a de-luxe room with two big beds. The room was modern in style and somewhat dark decorated - in contrast to the exterior style of the hotel which is an old building. The bathroom was rather small. The staff was very nice and helpful. The breakfast buffet very good.

Usually I visit a city or region and see a hotel I would rather of stayed at but not this time. I would without doubt reccomend this hotel to anyone. It's within walking distance of all attractions and restaurants. The staff are very helpful and courteous and were awesome. I highly advise the Canal cruise from outside the hotel. I also reccomend a trip to the Pancake Bakery near the Anne Frank house. The museums are all within 20 mins walk.

This hotel is within 10 mins walk of the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum and literally across the side road from a canal boat trip stop. Therefore great location for tourists. Restaurants within walking distance are fairly touristy but Stoop and Stoop is worth trying, see separate reviews. Also a short walk to the ... Read more
