Chance decision to stay here. What a place ! Its like a cross between a movie set and an old English Grammar school ! Wood panelling, amazing Art Deco features and a feeling of slightly tarnished grandure that is really appealing The rooms are massive with huge wood panelled shelving and very high ceilings, well equipped with a very nice, modern bathroom and big comfortable beds Location is great right by Central Station so easy walking distance to most places. Fantastic staff, wonderful rooms, amazing decor. If you like a hotel with charm, this is the one to stay in. There's massages, a business centre and even a pool. The mini bar in the room is complimentary and restocked each day, the bathrooms are modern and light. I've stayed in budget hotels and other chain hotels, but this is one I will definitely be coming back to the next time I come to the Netherlands.

Stayed just one night on business. Very friendly helpful staff, hotel room was very good size with free mini bar, tea and coffee. Very comfy bed with extremely comfy pillows much appreciated after a very busy day. Great location within walking distance of all attractions in Amsterdam Breakfast they had plenty of choice and open from 7 which is good for business trips. Overall a very enjoyable stay and would recommend. Will definitely use again.

I am wavering between giving this a 3 and 4 rating. If I could, I'd give it 3.5 - it's above average but I wouldn't call it 'very good' compared to other luxury hotels. We visited in Feburary and overall we enjoyed our visit. Firstly the positives: - Stunning architecture - Lovely room, cosy surroundings - Great view - Luxurious bath - Small but enchanting spa - Good food in restaurant - Minibar included in room price - Lower price point than other 5* hotels in the city. - Central location, wa... I very much enjoyed my stay at the Grand Hotel, I was met with a friendly check-in process and was allowed to leave my bags at reception so I could explore the city as I arrived a little early. My room was enormous, I asked for a King Size bed and got just that, with a whole wall of large bay windows looking out onto the harbor, and a large, modern bathroom. I did not eat at the hotel as there were too many places nearby so can't comment on the restaurant, but walking through it, it looked ver... Read more

Having lived in the Amsterdam area for almost 10 years, I have many reasons to return. I have struggled to find a 'regular' hotel to make my home away from home. I selected this hotel as this trip was booked very last minute so preferred hotel prices were through the roof, and yours truly does not have very deep pockets. I claimed my company's discounted rate and hoped for the best. The 10 hour flight from US west coast had us at the hotel door by 10am - hours before the official 2pm check-i... Read more

The bathroom was huge but lacked a rubber mat in the shower. There were no towel racks though towels were plentiful. The hotel has a beautiful spa and pool. The young concierge on arrival upgraded us for our wedding anniversary to a four poster room with a glass bathroom in an adjoining suite. I spent one totally unrestful night at this hotel. I was on first floor facing the canal - quite idyllic view. However on arrival the room was hot - saw 2 a/c vents in wall but could find no controller. Called reception who told me "The hotel is very old and we don't have a strong system - we can come and open a window for you and bring a fan". I was at that point still enamoured with the view - opened the windows and accepted the fan. But did question in my mind why this hotel advertises itself... Read more

This is not a five star hotel. More like three. No AC in the room, no staff in spa, rude response when asking for help. Breakfast ok but no wow/factor. If you are after a museum, this is the place for you. If you are looking for comfort and service, it's not.

For those of you who are used to 5 star service and accommodation then this is NOT the hotel for you . The hotel is stunning but the some staff do leave a lot to be desired , they would not last 10 minutes in a proper 5 start establishment . Staff all very well mannered and polite, and the building v impressive. Nice check-in, good room, but at 6am the (extremely noisy) hotel extension building work started for the day: no more sleep for us. I would give this hotel 3.5 stars if I could, but it's not quite up to 4. The hotel itself is beautiful and very nicely located. It's located inside of a historical building (and old warehouse, I think) that has been gutted and refitted with very nicely appointed rooms. Each room is unique, but the four that we had (two stays, two rooms each) were all very nice. The location of the hotel is perfect - right next to the central station. Almost all landmarks are walking distance from the hotel - in a 1 km radius. Service was good - decent breakfast and also a free mini-bar! Only issue we faced was that since it is a heritage hotel - there are no a/cs - only climate control. Since we visited in summer - it did get a bit stuffy - we eventually had to call for fans to be put in our room. Overall, pretty good though.

Stayed at the Amrath again, to celebrate our 20th anniversary in April. Service is very good (thank you for the complementary champagne waiting in our room!) and the hotel is just on the edge of Chinatown, so only a short walk to Centraal and the station. We were given a third-floor room overlooking the canal, very quiet and wonderful views over the old city. Upon arriving at the hotel 3 hours before check-in was due, we were allowed to check in immediately and given a free upgrade to a suite. Traveling to Amsterdam with another couple to take a Rhine river cruise, we wanted a hotel that was centrally located and highly rated. Based on the reviews we read on trip advisor, we chose Grand Hotel Amrath, and were not disappointed. We found the staff to be very friendly and very helpful. It is an older hotel, but in excellent shape. Our room was large, and the bathroom had been remodeled was was also large. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to Amsterdam.

So we were given a room on the ground floor, which faced parking lot. I was not excited about that, but they said that they were full, so I figured I would just deal with it, especially since I figured we would be spending very little time in the hotel anyway. So after coming back from dinner, after noticing some ants in the bathroom, upon further investigating, found literally hundreds of ants in the bedroom, including in a cup of water that I had left out. It is a hotel with lots of history, but not exactly my style. Helpful front desk personnel, but the biggest issue was that in July the weather is hot and there is no A/C in the rooms and they can get very hot especially during the day. The only way of sleeping is with the fans they have available. Breakfasts are very good but be careful if you visit this hotel in summer.

Best hotel in Amsterdam, beautiful architecture, a walk from Central Station, and 2 minutes from the red light district, restaurants, and shopping. Probably the most important thing to know is that this is a brilliantly restored and absolutely remarkable grand old structure with 20' ceilings, heavy wooden doors and trim, amazing stone work, leaded glass, mosaic tile and more. It's truly a remarkable gem. I've stayed at the Pulitzer and some of the other Hi... Read more

Stayed here for one night earlier during a city weekend break and decided to treat myself to a high end hotel. Would rate this as a 4 to 4.5 star hotel that's on the edge of the city, 10mins walk from the Central station. It's not quite a 5 compared to the luxury chains. The entrance and lobby reception area is very small, owing to limitations of the building structure more than anything. It does get confusing inside until you orientate yourselves with the lifts. Basic minibar, robes and sl... Read more

Finding the hotel was quick, it's only a very short walk from Centraal Station. Check-in was quick and easy and a refundable deposit was taken against the room (as the norm). As it was my birthday on the day of arrival we were generously upgraded to a junior suite with an amazing view out to the canal overlooking the city. The staff we came across were extremely polite and friendly and greeted us when they saw us around the hotel. A big plus is the free mini bar, this is restocked daily. Bed... Read more

Great hotel in an even better location. Right outside the downtown area of Amsterdam and only 10 minutes from Amsterdam Centraal Station, this hotel serves its clients well. The rooms are quite large and modern by European standards (remote controlled blinds), with high ceilings. The service was impeccable, particularly with the bell man. I cannot recall his name, but he was short with grey hair and lots of personality. I would certainly consider staying here again if on holiday.

The environment was perfect; a beautiful, old building in walking distance to "everywhere". Our room was unfortunately in the first floor facing to a yard under construction. If you didn't mind the ruined view it was ok for the weekend, but at Monday morning they started making noice just behind our window at 7 am... The spa in the hotel was lovely. The only negative thing was, that we were unable to order any refreshments there. The mini-bar was complimentary, but they seemed to have problems ... Read more

I originally requested a room on a higher floor and with a view of the canal, which is exactly what we got. The bed was very comfy and the mini bar was a plus. The check in was a breeze and the staff were super helpful and accommodating. We especially enjoyed the hot tub and were splurged for a massage that was nice and relaxing. This only added to the hotels charm. Nonetheless, the rooms are spacious, bed is comfortable and most of the rates include the coffee, snacks and drinks from the minibar. Correct, but anonymous staff. Incredible long check-in and out procedures. Invalid bills for room service on invoice. Obviously incompatible name - room combination. Not cross-checked. Inacceptable for a 5 star hotel. Cellar rooms without daylight, but instead with heavy works in front. Amsterdam is not cheap, but we experienced no value for money in this hotel.

The hotel is very central but a few minutes away from the hustle and bustle which makes it ideal. You can walk anywhere of note with the longest time it takes being under 30mins. Our room was on the first floor and internal facing so we didn't have a view at all and it was annoyingly quite noisy from guest above as the light kept shaking.
