Only bad thing i can say is they try to get you to sit down and become memebers for 59,000 dollars not what i was there to even think about so just watch for that. Great trip overall though."

"This trip was attended by my boyfriend and I (we are 26 & 31)
This was my 1st time in Playa Del Carmen, and 5th time in Mexico using an All-Inclusive (Previous trips to Cancun and Acapulco). Overall the hotel was very well maintained however older. The rooms were very nice, and appeared as they are in the pictures. Upon arrival I immediately asked for a King bed as I had read in previous reviews this was an issue with booking. At first they told me 'we are sold out of Kings' and with a little persistence they put us in a King bed room. We avoided the Gold-Card promotion people the entire time and did not have too much difficulty doing so. My recommendation is just say NO THANK YOU. They will ask you again, tell them you have already gotten your gold card and have chosen not to activate it.
The pool area is nice... and they kept bring the drinks one after the other which we loved. We tried all of the restaurants except Chef's Plate as this is not included in the Junior Package. I found the food to be OK at best. Most of the restaurants use the same ingredients just in different combinations. The food was very salty, but I expected this. My boyfriend and I did have some pretty awful GI issues towards the end of the trip - so bring medicine if you have a weak stomach.
The staff at the Royal was very friendly and the room service/turn down service staff did a wonderful job! I have never done a trip in 'off-season' so I thought the entertainment staff did a nice job as well considering the older crowd.
Overall I probably would not return to Playa del Carmen in general. If I did return I would consider staying at the Royal again however there are many resorts to choose from. If you are looking for a first time trip to Mexico and are in your 20-30s I would consider Cancun before Playa.

"Upon initially arriving at the Royal in Playa del Carmen, my girlfriend and I were extremely disappointed with our room. We had paid extra for an 'ocean view' room but our room had absolutely no view of the ocean. We leaned over the balcony in our room and still could not see even a glimpse of the ocean. We went back to the front desk to see if we could switch rooms, but the hotel was at full capacity for 'ocean views' so they would not switch us. They said that regardless of the actual view, the hotel classifies it as 'ocean view' because our room was on the outside of the resort, so their hands were tied. It would have been nice to have been upgraded (as we know there were upgrades available because they offered to upgrade us for $100 a night upon our initial arrival) because of our dissatisfaction, but they made no such concessions. Don't get me wrong, the room was absolutely beautiful; however, we felt that we shouldn't have been charged extra for an ocean view when we did not have one (in fact, we didn't even have a hammock like all the other rooms had). I think the hotel gives out rooms upon arrival so I would advise you to make sure you fly in early to get a room with an actual ocean view. We traveled with another couple that arrived around noon and their room had a view of the courtyard and ocean (what we thought we were getting based on what we had paid for). Despite all of the confusion with room, we LOVED our stay and would definitely return to the hotel (just wouldn't pay for an ocean view). The service was unbelievable and the food was excellent at all of the restaurants. We were very happy with everything except our view, but that motivated us to get out and enjoy the amenities that the hotel had to offer."

"This vacation was absolutely amazing!!!! We had no problems from the moment we got there. The Hotel was perfect. We were celebrating our first vacation as a couple and we did it all! From snorkeling to jet-skis and swimming to the famour COCO BONGO. The hotel is walking distance to 5th avenue and we loved every bit of it. I definitely recommend this trip to anyone looking to escape reality and RELAX!!!"

"The resort was nice and clean, and the service was generally friendly and accomodating. The spa was nice, and the grounds were maintained beautifully. But the restaurants available through the all inclusive program were below average. Only one restaurant, the Asiana, was good enough that we would consider returning, although we still consider this place to be only slightly better than average. We have stayed at other all inclusive places in Riviera Maya that had food that was much better. All in all, we were very disappointed in our trip to the Royal as a whole because it was so expensive. $4000 for a 6 day trip where we couldn't get a decent meal, and a bottle of wine or a lobster tail costs extra. The food was not something that you would expect at a 5 star, 5 diamond resort."

"The room was nice size, but had musty smell. We were on bottom floor so that maybe the reason for it. I would recommend an floor up higher to maybe catch the breeze. Also the room stated oceanview, but couldn't see much of ocean from bottom floor. The food and alcoholic beverages were less than desirable. Unless you like shrimp. Shrimp was fantastic. Do not recommend any of the prime rib anywhere. Asiana and the Italian restaraunt were the best. The main eating facility had great food but was very uncomfortable as it was very hot and humid. Would be nice if there were fans or open windows. The resort is very large. Felt like we were on a cruise more than at a resort. Was hoping for the price it would be more intimate and grand. I have stayed in nicer all-inclusives for half the price. Fun, but will not return."

"Just returned from a 6 night stay. We upgraded upon check in to a beach front room and were given a Romance Package and one free night for the upgrade (added $80 per night to the other 5). I am happy we did the upgrade, and the room was fabulous! Did not have the beach chair problem like I thought we would based on the reviews. We were able to get chairs, or just moved the other towels and laid down---it's pretty obvious when nobody has been around! Nobody ever came to try to get the chairs from us! We spent a couple of days by the beach, which other than being a bit smaller of an area than I thought, was great! The sand was nice and area was kept clean--can not say as much for the other areas we saw while walking to the north. Did not have a good experience at Pelicano's, the first night we got there. The service was extremely slow to even acknowledge us after we were seated, and the waiter was borderline unfriendly (sorry, did not get his name). I ordered the sea bass and did not care for it...I realize the fish comes from salt water, but thought it was extremely salty. The same was true of the Monkfish medallions meal I had at Maria Marie's. The presentation was beautiful and service was great, but the fish and the veggies (steamed) were extremely salty. I was expecting pieces/chunks of monkfish since it was called 'medallions', but instead it was fish with a bunch of unidentified stuff rolled up inside, with sauce slathered over the top of it. Asiana and Chef Plate were very good, with fantastic service. Same with the buffet. Room service was very good, except they ran out of Coors Light to stock in the fridge! Would LOVE to go back, wish it wasn't quite so pricey!"

"My husband and I stayed for 4 nights. Our experience was absolutely perfect. We could not believe how friendly everyone was and how clean everything was. The restaurents were delicious. The pool was beautiful and the beach was breathtaking. We both got massages which were fantastic. There was evening entertainment two of the nights which was very fun. We definitely will visit again.... hopefully next year!"

"Our hotel stay was wonderful. Food was okay. The only draw back is how everyone reserves the lounge chairs the night before. Lots of people were left without chairs and some chairs that were already reserved had the occupants things removed just so the other person could have that chair. Not worth the confortations it caused while on vacation. Having the downtown area easy to get to was nice as well. I probably would not go there again but it was a nice change for this trip."

The food in all the restaurants was excellent, the staff were friendly and helpful. It is absolute luxury for a very reasonable price. Definitely recommend staying here."
