"we spent 7 nights at catalonia riveria maya mid-february. the weather wasnt too hot, i suggest you bring a sweater for the evenings, i only brought summer clothing. the resort is beautiful, not too big, the staff are friendly and the place is sparkling clean! both my husband and i were surprised at the amount of cleaning staff we walked by every day. we got 'upgraded' at check-in, altho through talking with other guests, it sounds like there are different levels of 'upgrade'. we were very happy with the room we were in minus the view, our 'garden view' suite actually looked out onto a back road or alley of some sort, so we didnt spend any time at all on our deck. the set-up of the property is great. the age groups staying here seemed to be mostly 50 or families, tho we met a few people in our age group, it wasnt the norm (25-30). beach volleyball was great, the poolside entertainment was awesome. i wished there was music playing more regularly by the pools, it seemed that it was only on for the entertainment times by staff, also the buffet food was pretty hit or miss. the japanese ala carte and italian were both superb, the mexican was ok - we cook mexican at home alot and this seemed somewhat dry/tasteless compared to what we are used too. we tried tipping to see if it would make a difference in the style/quality of service we recieved for drinks/food. it seems like everyone has their hand out looking to make the extra $$ but not many went over and above to make it worthwhile. a couple staff that went over and above regardless, made our stay worth it - luis at chill out bar on the beach, and salvador at the bar between mexican and italian. after we met salvador, we made a point to get our drinks from him, he was easily the best staff member we met on the resort. we would come again, perhaps even with our kids. the little towel guys on the bed were super fun too....ps the on site club/disco is no good"

"Extremely disappointed with our stay here, when we arrived we were told our rooms were not ready even though we had booked our vacation 2 months in advance. After overhearing some of the other guests it sounded like this was a usual thing to overbook and not have rooms available. The standard rooms we stayed in were not at all 3 star or 4 star rooms. Thank goodness we upgraded. The food in the buffet was nothing to write home about. We were given vouchers to dine at their restaurants and were pleased with the food there, though we stayed 7 nights we only received 3 vouchers....go figure. Unfortunately most of the staff was not friendly from the front desk, to the waiters, to the pool area. We tipped quite generously hoping to get better service but it just did not happen. We would not recommend this hotel to any friends or family. We have taken many family vacations in different parts of Mexico, sorry to say this is not a place we will ever return to:("

"It all began as soon as we checked it, I booked two rooms with king size bed next to each other and did not receive that. The bed in the room were HORRIBLE, they were extremely hard for 4 nights we did not sleep well. In the second bedroom the double beds were sunken in with no suppor, the refrigerator was broken and the tv as well. We were told if we wanted better we needed to upgrade to there 'Privilege' room. Also, we thought that it being all-inclusive we would save money on food, but the food was lacking. All 4 of us agreed that we did NOT LIKE the food at all, they had a big selection but the food was lacking taste we ended up leaving to go eat. View was beautiful, Cancun was as nice but we will NEVER stay at this place again and I would not recommend this place to anyone. For what you are paying to stay here it is not worth it. Stay somewhere else."

"Upon arrival, the desk clerk told us that although we had booked a double, only a king was available. That was problematic because my wife and I hadn't planned on sharing a bed with our 21 year old daughter. So that put me in a bad mood. Later at the pool bar, we met a couple who wanted a king but got a double. How could you not take 2 reservations correctly that could be resolved by chance? Later, the humidity picked up tremendously and we all found out that the a/c was not working sufficiently and were told by the staff that the whole building was in similar circumstances. A room in the sister property (Catalonia Yucatan) became available the next day, so we moved again.
The buffets were OK, however the staff insists on seating people which causes a backup at the hostess station at the big rush times."

"Overall experience sucked... not what I expected rooms ok , first day no Towels in our room... Buffet sucked all the food tasted horrible only thing good in the morning was cereal and maybe the omelettes.. Hotel clean but too small and crowded. Service ok not very impressed specially when you arrive they tell you that on the specialty Restaurants for dinner you have to be dressed with pants and dress shoes. I did not bring pants since I was going to the beach brought some dress shorts but according to the guy in the lobby when we check in it was not acceptable so we had to buy a pair of pants and when we arrive at the Japanese Restaurant everyone is wearing sandals and shorts with T-Shirts not cool... Since day One our trip was already going a little wrong. so to tell you the truth not going back ever again not worth the money you will pay."

"So...I was expecting way more for what we paid for this hotel. The rooms themselves are actually really nice and clean, BUT the location of our room was ridiculous. Maids' storage room was right across the hall so every morning at 730 AM we were woken up by carts, banging & maids talking REALLY loud even though I asked them to be quiet numerous times. We were also on the bottom floor with the patio facing the pool...so we had to keep our curtains closed the entire time or have 200 people staring into our room. We asked to move 4 times, no rooms available, so we gave up. SO if you book here, request a room on the second floor at least and away from the maids supply closet. If you want to sleep in, don't count on it, the doors and walls are VERY thin, you hear everything all night & all day. Bartenders, not friendly at all. Food was mediocre, but what do you expect from an all inclusive. A la cart restaurants, don't bother, only the Mexican one was decent, go figure. I slept the best on the plane on the way home, pathetic. Drinks lack alcohol unless you wave a dollar at the bartender. Overall, would not come back, and never would recommend to anyone. If we had a better room, maybe. But we didn't. BEST part of the stay was the excursions and their food, you must do Xplor and Tulum/Xel-ha, Coba Maya encounter was amazing as well, take a day and go to Cozumel also."

"Don't go to this resort. the beach is horrible.they have rocks, sea weed and its crowded. food and staff sucks. i booked two priveliged rooms for me and my family of six. they wanted to but us in two small rooms with a king size bed in each and broken sofa beds in each room(priveliged my but). when i specifically asked for doulble beds. one of our rooms was next to a janitor closet so we were woken up at 6am by the loud staff and banging.which didn't stop all day. point being once your there your screwd because its not like you can just cancel and go home. i wasted my vacation money just to fly to mexico and was mad the whole time. not expensive but not at all worth even if they charged have of what i paid. please tell a your freinds to go any where but this resort."

"My overall experience was great , the staff was friendly and with as many people who were staying there the pool area and the grounds were spotless. My only have to neg. things to say about the place. First I paid for a Privileged Suite with two double beds since i was traveling with my sister and my son. I was given a room with a king size bed. After talking with the front desk twice i was finally told that there was only 8 rooms that was privileged with two beds in them and there was nothing they could do. Why list a room that you have only 8 out of 422 of !! Second do not go to the streak restaurant , my son and i both ordered the T-Bone streak and it was so thin you could see thru it. (really) All other restaurant we ate at were great."

"The resort, restaurants, and entertainment were absolutely fabulous. We had a phenomenal time at the resort. All the staff were friendly, and on point when you needed something from them. The only little mishap that we has was, that we felt misguided by the presentation of the room. The room's look nothing like the advertisement on this website. Also they didn't accomodate my husband's and I request the first night of asking for a room with king size bed in it. They put us up in a room with two queens, and the second night moved us. We feel we should have been put there the first night, if the request was made six months in advance. My husband and I are over six feet tall, this is why this was such an issue for us."

"We stayed July 7th-13th. We paid for a Privileged Suite and our family paid extra for a Privileged Superior Suite only to realize when we got there it was the exact same room. They told the front desk and they said there wasn't a difference between the regular Privileged Suite and Privileged Superior Suite. They said Privileged is Privileged. Same Room.
*Their Superior Suite was suppose to have a living room or a outside pool on balcony.
*There are very few ocean front/ view rooms.
Creperie was fantastic. (Moca's are a must have)
Snorkeling was amazing along with the parasailing.
*If you book activities, be aware that a lot are in Cancun which is about 1hr 15 min from resort. You have to pay ALOT extra for a taxi or rent your own car.
OVERALL GREAT EXPERIENCE."

"Overall the hotel was very clean and the staff was very friendly. The property is not as big as i thought it was going to be however it was still spacious and had a lot of pools within the resort. The food was okay, the breakfast was probably the best part. There were food options but wish there was more for people to choose from.
The entertainment staff were GREAT and really brought the experience even more fun during the day and night.
the rooms where VERY clean and cozy as well."

"The only real negative was that the room looked no where near as nice as they were in the pictures. Our room had peeling paint on the walls and doors and they were doing what I think was remodeling on the 4th floor two floors above us. We lost our specialty restaurant coupons so we only got to eat at the buffet, which my children loved but I heard good things about the others and wanted to try them. The kids and I loved the snorkeling in the lagoon. I might return when the remodeling is done as the room conditon was the only real disappointment."

"I traveled with my 13 yr old daughter. We had a great time. we upgraded to a privledged suite. It was beautiful. very comfortable. The specialty restaurants were absolutely delicious with very friendly and attentive staff. ( I did tip them extra:) However the only disappointment was the staff in the the buffet restaurant. Not attentive at all. Only some were friendly and many did not understand english. I waited some monings 10mins before anyone would ask if I wanted coffee. Food in the buffet was typical island vacation fare. Except the one night it was absoulutey disgusting. My daughter wishes that all of these all inclusive resorts would have an american food night, just like oriental, spanish and island night. But in my eyes thery are pretty much all the same. In the end I enjoyed my vacation there and I would go back again. thanks for a very reasonably priced and fun vacation. PS go to Dolphinarius in Riviera Maya Absoliutely wonderful Worth every penny except be preapared to pay a lot for pictures. you are not allowed to take your own."

"The Resort was amazing! Food and drink were plentiful. Great value for your money. The cleanliness was superb, this coming from a complete germophobe. The staff was continuously cleaning, even on the days that it rained! The staff is so very full of very hardworking individuals. The beach was just awesome, a bit rocky so water shoes are a must. The snorkeling was way more fun that I ever thought it would be. Swimming with dolphins just up the way in the marina was surprisingly affordable, but was so fun Id would gladly have paid double! Definitely will return!"

"My husband and I booked this place as it was reasonably priced compared to other all-inclusive resorts and overall got good reviews. I have never been to Mexico before so I cannot rate this place compared to other resorts but we were not disappointed. Our request for the 'honeymoon package' was fulfilled when we got there (it's not much but still a nice touch), which was a good start, but we were most impressed by how hard-working the staff is at the hotel. We stayed in the priviledged rooms, which were kept amazingly clean, I think they came to clean 2x a day, which included completely mopping both the room and bathroom floors (when do they do this in the States??). Staff could be seen outside at 7am trimming the plants and cleaning the pools. And it made me feel better that the staff looked content despite all the hard work they were doing daily.
Food at the buffet was plentiful with lots of options (both healthy and non-healthy) both in the morning and at lunchtime - dinner was not bad at the buffets but not as impressive (we found some of the lunch food was recycled) unless it was a 'theme-night.' (the Asian theme-night was quite impressive). We mostly ate at Las Brisas, which had a wider selection but was more crowded than the other buffet, which had a nicer view (of the beach vs. the pools) and was quieter in general. We didn't even use our voucher for dinner at the restaurants as we were somewhat disappointed after using our voucher for the Tapas lounge, and had wished we had gone to the buffet and had more space to eat crepes at the creperie next door instead. We don't like to waste food and prefer to try all the different foods first then get more of what we like later, so buffets are best for us.
Beach was beautiful, water clear and most areas not too rocky or filled with too much algae. We walked to Dreams resort next door and thought our beach was nicer. We took advantage of snorkeling, kayaking and archery, all which was great - they limit to an hour a day of those water sports (they all had hobbie cats), but since the resort is not huge it's sufficient. One thing to note - I got some sort of stomach sickness my last day there which I think might have been due to licking some of the sea water on my lips while snorkeling as I don't think it was from the food....
Overall we really liked that the place was clean, extremely well-kept, not overly crowded and drinks and food definitely worth the all-inclusive price. Bars everywhere. Shows were ok, but not bad if you realize that they're put on by the same entertainment staff that holds games and provides entertainment for guests basically all day.
We would definitely go back."

"First of let me say that you pay for what you get when you book theses all-inclusive deals. We booked about 4 months ago and got a great deal. We knew going into it what to expect as far as food and beer and hotel rooms. The staff is amazing, they are so nice and always there to help your stay be even better that you can imagine. We checked in early and were upgraded to an ocean view suite (my boyfriend emailed the manager a few weeks before our stay). We had our bags taken to our room and were ready to explore the resort. It is two resorts in one with two pools and lots of options for food. They have theme nights at the buffets so you always have somewhat of a choice on what to eat. Drinks are great as well, corona and margaritas are the norm. they will make you the craziest shots if you tip them a bit. The a la carte restaurants are great as well, we ate the Italian, the Japanese 's and the Tappas bar. The Japanese as everyone else has said is GREAT! The experience is really cool as they cook right in front of you and the staff there is amazing as well.Overall we have a great stay, no problems at all. Got a few massages while we were there, which were wonderful. We did a few executions, I would recommend the Jungle Jim 's ATV one, it 's worth the money! rn"

"Right away, we were attacked by time share people at the airport. It was very unnerving but politely told them we were NOT interested. We had a shuttle from the airport to our hotel which was an hour south. Thank goodness for this. Driving a rental car there in Mexico would have been confusing. Upon arrival to our hotel we were greeted with a cocktail. Check in was very quick and easy and the room we were given was actually in the Yucatan area of the hotel and not on the Catalonia side. It is broken down based on levels of upgrades. Basic rooms, privileged, suites, etc... Even though we had a Ocean/Pool room view it was mainly a pool room with a small area of the ocean visible. They explained this at check-in though. They were very accommodating with new towel cards when we incorrectly dropped our towels off and didn't get a towel card. There was normally a charge for these if you didn't have them. Food was EXCELLENT. We were surprised by past reviews on the food and felt the restaurants and buffets were all extremely great. The entertainment staff was exciting and entertaining and very friendly along with all the bartenders. Tips go a long way!! Bring water shoes for the beach. There are reefs however it is great for snorkeling. With water shoes you should have no problem. Checking out equipment for different sport activities was easy and there was a schedule of various events going on throughout the day which was fun to join in on if you had nothing else going on. Staff was very informative of various activities outside the resort as well. Other guests were nice and friendly. Not much ice in the drinks. Beers served in plastic glasses would get warm quicker. Just drink them faster. Chairs on the beach were easily attainable at any time. Staff would go around cleaning the beach frequently. All in all a great place to stay for a great vacation. Would recommend to families and/or couples. "

"This trip was not one of our best. Upon checking in at the hotel they had offered a garden view or ocean view, we received a pool view, and were told to go out onto our patio and look left, there was the ocean!! There was definetly nothing special about our room. The food was less than pleasant, even having 5 different places to eat, everything seemed to be exactly the same. The hours that food was available was hard to follow. There were no pools open after 6pm!! It seemed that the whole place died down so early, and not alot of options for activities on the premises. We love Mexico, and plan to go back, but will not be staying at this resort."

No problems after that. Travel shuttle was easy to find to and from the airport, very helpful staff at the hotel, immaculate grounds and pools, energetic activity staff, and an overall wonderful experience. "I think the old addage of you get what you pay for applies here. My 'garden view' was a concrete wall. The property is located on a thin strip of beach so there are really very few ocean views. I paid for the 'Privileged' room which meant we got free wifi on entire property-which was excellent. The walls here are thick and AC works well. Very nice to be able to get a good nights sleep in this area. The other guests were a mixture of European Honeymooners, US 'partiers', etc and a few families.Upon check in I had to call 4 times due to room problems. The shower did not drain, the lock fell off the porch door when I touched it, the electric face plate and the entire socket came off the wall when I unplugged my laptop and the room lock box (free w privalege room also) was closed and locked . Additionally, the in room fridge was not cold (and never did get very cold at all) They came promptly . However two things were especially troublesome. The water from the tap there is NOT purified. I always freely drink the water on my numerous other trips. I found out the next day that was a mistake. They should have a sign in the bathroom stating water not purified. We also had a major problem with the lock box. On the 5th night of our stay the machine had an alarm beeping intermittently all night. The number 3 kept flashing, The next morning I once again called the technician and he came and said it was fine. I even told him, in Spanish, that I suspected the 3 was a mesage that the battery was low.. Well, in afternoon the safe went dead with everything I needed inside. One tech came and couldn't open it. He called another who determined the battery was so dead they could not open the box. We had to call in AM. What if we had departure that day, or a tour booked in the AM, or needed medications in the box? So in AM I got up early and waited as in fact not there until 9. Then we waited, one came did same things again and had to get another guy . We missed breakfast, pool time etc. By 11:15 they finally broke safe and installed a new one. I received no offer of a free massage, ,manicure-.nothing. All told I wasted at least 4-5 hours having to deal with all of this. Fortunately I could sit on my porch and look at the concrete wall. The exericise area was great. The rooms with the jacuzzis looked nice. IF I went here again I would pay for the suite. "

"First of all, Catalonia Riviera Maya was the best resort we have ever stayed at. Staff was so friendly, entertainment was surprisingly high quality, food was amazing, and the amenities surpassed our expectations.
We had a standard room and if I would change one thing I would have upgraded to a better room. The room itself was fine, view from our garden view room was anything but garden view. We had a spectacular view of the garden, plus the pool and the ocean. The beds were not good and neither were the pillows, bring your own. TV was the old tube type, that really doesn't matter, but it made the room feel old.
WiFi throughout the entire resort was a pleasant surprise. The food in every restaurant was of such great quality. Every meal was great. La Creperie was the biggest surprise. Open from 5:00-11:00pm, we could get some of the best crepes and coffee you could imagine on an open air terrace by the beach.
Swim up bars were great as well. The guys were so friendly and would remember your name and you drink of choice. Daily drink specials were a nice touch too.
Overall we loved it and will return without question."

"Hotel was very clean and staff was helpful. I got the upgraded privileged room which was very nice and spacious. It does say you get a mini bar, which is a joke. It's a little refrigerator, they give you 2 beers, 3 bottles of water and about 4 cans of soda. I asked for more beers, and they put six in there, next day they took 4 out. The 7 restaurants are not open every day, and you never know when they'll be open. One of our days there was only 2 open. The food is very good though. Water shoes are a must for the beach. They tell you dress code is mandatory at dinner, but most men wore shorts. I would try it again, the price is good for what you get."

"This is not a 4 star resort, so do not be fooled by the photos or the claim that it is. It's more like a 3 star. The food is awful but they do keep the resort clean. Drinks are watered down, but the staff is friendly. Front desk could learn some customer service or take a cue from their working staff! I wouldn't recommend this resort for singles."

"This resort is a great value for the price & was a wonderful experience. I have stayed at 5 Star in the area before, but I will return to this hotel in the future. The crowd is very multi-cultural & friendly. The beach was beautiful, the snorkeling was some of the best in the area, plenty of activities & the grounds were nice. The staff was very friendly & gave us a free upgrade to a beach view. It was the most lovely view ever! The area felt extremely safe & this was one of the best vacations I've had. The only thing that I felt could be improved on is the food. It was decent in the buffets, not great, although the Al la Carte restaurants were quite good. I would like to see the buffets add more authentic food, rather than things like Hot Dogs & Mac & Cheese, but I understand the need to make their children visitors happy too. Overall I would highly recommend the resort to others."

"Every room has a balcony and there is only a max of 3 floors to every building. No elevators and long walks through hallways to get to your room. The rooms were spacious and were cleaned twice a day. The staff was amazing! Most spoke very good English and they all went out of their way to help us. The buffet was as expected, but I am also not much of a fan of any buffet style food. However there was a snack buffet open all day that was great. The al a carte restaurants were great and we only had a wait time for half an hour on one occasion. As a priveledged guest we were given an extra voucher for a special al a carte that was amazing! There was a tonne of organized activities every day. They also had kayaks and snorkeling equipment available. The beach was a bit rocky but made for great snorkeling. There was enough pools to make it easy play in the water. I highly recommend you book as a privileged guest. The benefits are well worth it. I also recommend that you buy the round trip transportation since cabs can get pretty expensive. Best day travel also helped us to book two excursions which were very worth it! Xplor was an excellent way to spend our day. I would return here and definitely am going recommend it to my friends and family."

Plenty of pools to dip in and great place to snorkle. one hour/day included free. located inside a gated community. everyone there is very friendly. didnt get an upgraded room, but didn't need it as we spent almost no time in the room. there are plenty of activities to keep you busy all day. warer aeobics, step clsss, beach volleyball, tennis, soccer, random contests breakfast and dinners were good, lunch buffet could have been better. would recommend it to others. unless you have something against rocky beaches with lots of variety of fish to see.. it was awesome."

"Great hotel, great experience! Even though the beah was not of the highest quality for swiming compared to other beaches in the area, the feeling of security in the water was very comforting. The opportunity to snorkle and actually see marine life is reachable to the young and more mature alike. The evening entertainment was oustanding. Very family oriented. Great cusine. Beautiful tropical environment. We actually saw iguanas everyday in the area. Staff was friendly and helpful. No surprises. Only negative experience I had was with the policy of table assignment in the general cafeteria. I wished that I had the opportunity to select my seatng area as long as tables were available in such area."

"If you are looking for a luxury stay this isn't the place I'd recommend, but overall it is a decent resort and a good value. The standard rooms are older and the bed isn't very comfortable but they do offer upgrades to the nicer suites if they are available. The beach isn't stellar due to a lot of seaweed and rocks but they do a good job keeping the beach clean. The grounds are nice with plenty of pools and restaurants and the buffets have pretty good food. The staff is extremely friendly and there are plenty of activities to keep you busy. The only reason we wouldn't return is because we'd like to try other resorts in the area but overall it was a good experience."

There were some staff that came out by the pool to get you to 'exercise' (while on vacation... lol) and they were quite entertaining!! "I travel quite often and have always stayed in a 5 or 6 star resort as I am use to luxurious resorts with lots of amenities so that I don't have to venture out if I don't want to. Having said that...I stayed at this Resort and Spa (4 stars) because it was a last minute booking and didn't have a lot of time to make a decision. Also, the friend I was traveling with was on a budget so I had to compromise. The resort in itself (grounds) were better than I expected. It was very well maintained, cleaned and pretty. Lots of pretty flowers! I upgraded the room to a priviledge one...here you get a mini bar in your room for water, beer and soft drinks and turned down service at night. Our room was very nice. This section of the hotel was recently renovated so the rooms are very modern and beautifully decorated. Glad I did that! Our room faced the garden which was fine, even though I usually book an ocean room. Like I said, time and my friend's budget didn't allow me to do much more. The staff at the hotel were friendly and pleasant...especially the entertainment staff. What a riot they were all day and night! They kept the vacationers busy and happy at the pool area. The different nighly theme shows in the theatre were also very nice. The beach is small but nice, very rocky when you get in so take water shoes. We snorkeled behind the resort, by the beach.. We saw a ton of beautiful fishes. You get an hour a day of snorkel for free. You can also kayak in the area as well for free. So, there was much to do at the resort. I usually relaxed by the ocean during the day as there was less noise and not so many kids. The pool area was fun but loud most of the time. Now for the restaurants...not so great...just ok except for the Japenese one, it was fantastic! For the ala carte restaurants, you need vouchers, which you get depending on the amount of days you stay. We had two and got an extra one from a couple we met. You can't make a reservation so it is first come, first serve and you could end up waiting 30 to 45 minutes or more depending on how many of them are open for the evening. Not all open every day. I was there for 6 days and there was only one day where they all were opened. It depends on how full the resort is for the day. The buffet restaurant and snack bar were just ok too. The food is tasteless and you feel like your eating the same thing every day. I would returned back if the chefs were replaced with better ones. They are not the greatest cooks! It really is a nice resort but the food was not the best. I have had better. The SPA is beautiful and well worth visiting at least once. I booked one tour and our rep didn't quite tells us all we needed to know...we asked a lot of questions but still did not get the answers we wanted. He kept trying to sell us the Catamaran tour which we ended up booking, probably because I felt sorry for him. Now I wish we had chosen something else. It was a very long day and 11 people got sick (vomiting) on the catamarin, including myself, because the waves were sooooo bad! It took us 3-1/2 hours before arriving for a 15 minute snorkeling session which was not the greatest or the safest. After that, a quick not so great lunch on the catamarin and then another short boat trip to the beach for an hour before our transportation picked us up to go for a guided tour to see the Tulum Mayan Ruins (highlight of the tour). The beach was also beautiful by the way but not enough time there. Had I been given all of this information prior, I would have chosen a different tour. Three in half hours was way too long to be on a catamarin. This tour costs us 108.00 dollars each. They should have canceled the trip due to the waves but they didn't. Forgot to mention, small print in the description says that there is a free shuttle to go to Playa del Carmen but that is not the case. The resort canceled the shuttle service 2 years ago and now you have to cab to Playa del Carmen if you want to go for 22 dollars (4 people can share) the cab price. I didn't get a chance to go there for shopping, restaurants or night life because there wasn't enough time. I did hear from a lot of guests who went that Playa del Carmen that it was beautiful and a great place to spend the day. It is great for shopping, eating or just simply hanging out. Wish I had gone. All in all, I did have a nice vacation. Hope this review helps you!"

"Me and my husband have been to this resort 7 times, and have taken friends here as well. I can't understand people complaining about it! You want a 5 star resort at a 3 star price! Really people, if you are that needy, then perhaps you should go to a 5 star resort to get pampered!
We are definately impressed by the friendliness of the staff, the cleanliness of the hotel, and overall the quality of the food. Sometimes it's a little hard to find something to eat, but I am a very picky eater and always find something! The guys at the pool bar are fun and friendly and always bringing you drinks before you even order another.
My only complaint is that we can't stay longer!"

I have sense met folks in my town who have been to the Catalonia Yucatan and they also had a very positive vacation.
We definitely hope to return some day within the next year.

"Let me first say that the resort, (to use the term loosly) looked nice on the outside at first glance. The pool area was nice, the beach was pretty, everything was clean.
The rooms, however clean, were terribly dated and worn and looked more like a cell than a resort room. As soon as we arrived they tried to get us to upgrade, but we declined. The first thing that hits you when you walk in the room is the musty smell. They took us to 3 rooms before we found one that we figured was not getting any better. The beds were like cots, the linens old and dingy as were the towels. The television from another era, no clock or any other amenities unless you count soap and shampoo. If you like a nice comfortable room, go somewhere else.
The food was all buffet except for the two coupons that we got to eat at one of the 'upscale' restaurants. Not very upscale and nothing to write home about. We weren't told that we could only eat at the restaurants with table service 2 times during our visit until we went the first night to eat. The all you can eat buffets were average, at best. Lots of different things, none very good. If you want good food, go somewhere else.
The drinks were definitely watered down. No alcohol in them to speak of. Everything is served in these little plastic cups. Every kind of beer you ask for comes out of the same tap...hmmm.... If you want a good margarita, go somewhere else.
The beach was pretty to look at, but don't try to go in the water. There are rocks everywhere. Get there early if you want two charis together because people put towels on them first thing in the morning to save them. Lucky for us it was not too crowded because the chairs are all crammed together on the small beach. If you want to go to a place with a nice beach, go somewhere else.
Wanted to play tennis. Discovered that the 2 courts are on the roof of one of the buildings. Went to check them out before we played and discovered courts with no net straps and the courts were patched with concrete. Looked a little dangerous to be running around on. If you like to play tennis on vacation, go somewhere else.
The pools were really nice, but we ddin't fly all that way to sit at a pool every day.
There were lots of kids activities, but we didn't have any kids with us.
We were scheduled to stay for 5 days. After the second day, we decided this was not what we signed up for, took our own advice and WENT SOMEWHERE ELSE! I can highly recomment the Westin Laguna Del Mar in Cancun. That's a resort!"

"This vacation was great! The resort was very clean and pleasing. All met our expectations. Staff was friendly and accomidating. Server who served drinks on the beach and worked in the Steak and Grill was our favorite!
I would recommend this resort to my friends and family.
The Best Day Travel staff was also very helpful with transportation and planning a day at Dolphinaris Grand. A must do and seemed to the best out of several places to choose from to swim with the dolphins. Very clean!
My only suggestion would be to pay the small differance for a Privillaged upgrade as we did."

"I went as a couple with the wife for this Review.
First let me start by telling you about the travel time from Cancun airport to Catalonia Riviera Maya will be 1 hour. I would suggest that you use Lomas Travel for your round trip transfers (Book in advance). We were welcomed with drinks when we arrived and the receptionist was very polite. The grounds were beautiful and clean and with an average temp. of 80 degrees/ 100% humitity (in October) but, great!
Now about the room, I noticed a few reviews online were poor about the standard rooms so I upgraded to the privileged one. I must say it was perfect with a big bed, new style shower. Every night the maid staff will make animals out of towels placed on your bed, Nice touch!
Now onto the food, there is a few restaurants at the resort that you may choose to dine in at (Coupons or room charges apply), which you will want to do once you have had about 4 meals in the buffet. Honestly the Steak House (the pool side snack bar by day) is the best quality food out of all their restaurants! The buffet food quality is about a 7 out of 10 at best. All the staff in the resort are very polite and remember your drink order quickly with a little tip.
Now about the water, The pools are cool and the ocean is warm and crystal clear, you can see fish without gogles on! There is no coral in the water but, a lot of rocks to walk on as you inter the ocean. Just get past the small rocks and you can stand in the water with mostly white sand below. There is plenty of fish swimming near the surface of the water you can see.
For the entertainment, I choose to hang around the sports bar. You can play pool for free if you get the ball set from the receptionist. Next door they have a club that opens at 11pm I think (Had a little too many drinks to remember the time) which had good music and they have entertainers dancing to help get folks in the mood to dance. Lastly, there is the best spot in the evening when your ready to relax and get ready to hit the hay is to stop at the 'Chill Out Bar'. They play good music like 'Hotel California'by the Eagels, and you can see the moon light refect off the water and can hear the light crash of waves while enjoying a drink of your choice. Hope you have found this review helpful and remember that some of the 'Bad Reviews' were maybe just a fluke. I will definately return to this resort!"

"This was our first time in Mexico, and we absolutely loved this place. All of the staff members were so nice and happy. I didn't feel like they excepted tips. The buffet food was buffet food so decent enough. The specialty restaurants are better. The animation team is one of the best parts of the resort, they are hysterical and really get the crowd going. The beach was really nice, a little rocky but great for snorkeling. The shows at night were good. Only downside is that nothing was open 24 hours, there was no room service and the pools were closed at sundown. That being said I would still come back here and would recommend. We did book the honeymoon suite and we had a day in the spa. Well worth it. There were a lot of people who we met that have been going here repeatedly, so it was nice to see some loyalty. The hotel was only 40% full so we did not have to wait in any lines or fight for chairs. We were told by some of the other guests that during the busy season this is not the case.
We also went to Tulum and Xel-Ha. Both of these are really wonderful. Tulum is very hot but there is a beach you can swim at. You cannot climb these ruins though. :( Xel Ha was amazing. Free buffet and open bar as well. Really a good bang for your buck."

"Overall it was a pleasant and successful trip for the price. In writing this review I understand I could have paid more for upgrades for more of a 5 star experience. We were travelling with 3 teenagers so we were looking for more of an activity based resort at a good price. This did seem to be more of a family resort, but can be romantic if you get further away from the main pool area. Such as at the beach area reclining under a grass umbrella.
The room was booked at pool/ocean view but we received a garden view. We asked at booking and check in for adjoining rooms. The gentleman at the desk spent some time looking over occupanncy and gave us our two rooms. They were neither adjoining or even on the same floor. He was neither accomodating or forthcomming, probably hoping we would not complain after we get to the rooms. The grounds and rooms were very clean and maintained. The activities staff did a great job in getting participation from the guests. But if you wanted to be secluded they would recognize this and leave you alone.
The food was plentiful and decent but not as good as expected. The sushi resturaunt (Makado) was the best, the others were average. The bars were all understaffed and we often had to wait for drink service.
But overall it was worth the trip and they definitly provided a fun vacation for adults and kids.

"We had a good time during our honeymoon at the Catalonia Riviera Maya Resort and Spa, but were not impressed by the hotel, its food or service. Food was bad, but the grounds are pretty and well cared for. The beach is not impressive. We were especially not impressed by their customer service.
On our first night, after arriving at the hotel around 9 P.M., the power went out in our room at approx. 11 P.M. Only our room seemed to be affected. It was pitch black in the room and a scary experience in an unknown and new place. First, we called the reception several times and got a dial tone but no answer. We walked up to the reception and found two employees, who apparently did not bother to answer the phone. When we explained the problem, the receptionist told us he would send somebody to fix it, but nothing more. We stood waiting, several minutes later he told us to go to our room. There was no power. After waiting 15-30 minutes, maintenance showed up. Two maintenance workers tinkered around the room for nearly two hours as we continued to sit in the dark. We demanded a new room, which was eventually granted at past 1 A.M. We moved all of our belongings into the new room in complete darkness with only the maintenance man's flashlight to guide us. While gathering belongings exhausted, in the dark, and frustrated we left behind our meal vouchers, towel tickets, spa bucks, and information about how the hotel worked.
You would think that these things would be returned to us the next day, but they never were and we didn't even know what we had lost. Throughout our trip, we learned about benefits we should have been receiving from other guests and when we then went to the reception to request such things, we were laughed at. Usually, the hotel gave us the items, like new towel tickets that if lost incur a $30 charge each, but only after interrogation about how we didn't know about them or how we lost them.
Never did we receive an apology or any other gesture to show that Hotel Catalonia cared to address our situation. I understand that no hotel is perfect, that power outages and other inconveniences occur. No big deal. But, a hotel should show that they care about their customers by stepping up to take care of them when these things occur. After our first night we never felt comfortable or secure at the hotel, nor did we trust the staff.

"Our honeymoon at Catalonia was wonderful overall. We received a privileged suite which was really big and modern and we received a bottle of sparkling wine and fruit for our honeymoon. The staff was always friendly and spoke to us (Hola!) every time we walked by the staff. Our fave part were the tours...we went to Tulum and Akumal and Jungle Maya and also partied at Coco Bongo in Playa Del Carmen (a little long...10-3:30 for our liking but still a great experience!) The food at the buffet (included in our deal) was not so hot. We didn't get a chance to try the restaurant food (paid) but the buffet was bland and nothing to write home about. The only other flub was that I left some shorts on our patio to dry and in the morning they were gone. The beach was great...turquoise water and very warm. The pools weren't as deep as we'd have liked but were more for relaxing and walking around the Puerto Aventura community which our resort was in was safe and interesting. The trip to the airport in Cancun was a bit long but our Best Day reps were all very cool. This resort gets an A from us!"

"This was the first time in this resort for myself and hubby and we both thought it was a great experience, our room situation wasn't quite up to scratch as we were on the main route for all vehicles and deliveries, so we heard a lot of noise in the night, we could not sit on our balcony either due to the overwhelming smell of the garbage.
Overall though a very pleasant resort with lovely food and entertainment and a snack bar that was open til 2am was great.
Plenty of pools and other restaurants to choose from instead of the constant buffet to give you a variety each evening.
I would definitely go back, but would like to try other hotels on that coast line also.
The entertainment staff were brilliant throughout the day and in the evening they were true stars at the shows, I was most impressed with them."

"Excellent stay - the staff were very friendly and helpful. Had a couple of nights when the air conditioing unit broke down but it was fixed immediately. We were offered an upgrade for extra $ - but decided to stick with our ocean and pool view room. Great value for money with the all inclusive food and drinks and plenty of variety. Would love to go there again at some stage."

"My Daughter and I stayed here friday through monday for her 22 birthday. The room was nice and had a good view. Check-in was efficient and polite. The food was pretty tasteless at the buffets and getiting dinner reservations was such a long wait with food also a let down to us and others, but the real kicker is the bartenders had such poor attitudes. They would smile and take your order and a minute or so later they just would walk away from the bar and not give you a drink. The other bartenders would seem to notice and still not step in. This occured several times and there were only 4 people wanting drinks each time. No drunks were noticed and the area was good for children also. Now we were very pleasent about it and were'nt drinking much at all but the rudeness or should I say lack of mental ability to be accountable for doing a job without pressure did frustrate me a bit. I had stayed at the Omni Pyramid in Cancun and my goodness they had tremendous work load and served very effeciently under triple the pressure. Same price. The beach sand was great but be very careful entering the water as the rock and coral was a bit harsh. The water and waves were great. We took a Taxi into Carmen as the grounds dont offer public transportation. It also made mt Daughter feel a bit better as travel can be a bit overwhelming in a new country. Fifth Ave stores and the beach in Carmen was fun to walk. Also walking the beach and stopping for a bucket of cervesas. I would go back if the price was a bit better. Others we met had room issues with the A/C and they also spoke of my opinion written. Book It was easy to use and Days Travel reps for Book It were very pleasent and professional. Hope this helped... Bob"
