"I came to ABR by myself at the end of October for a 10 day stay. I was exhausted and stressed beyond reason when I arrived. I left feeling at peace and full of gratitude that this lovely old resort hasn't been ruined by the greed of developers. The beach is why you come here. If you want glitz and bragging rights to impersonal vast mega resorts visited for your portfolio you will want to go elsewhere. The beach is clean. The hotel staff come every morning and rake up the flotsom and trash left by the self centered guests who don't yet get ecology, so the pale sand is always inviting and safe for your bare feet. The water is clear and protected by the close in reef so it is usually very calm, too. Yes, you can snorkel right outside your room. You will see lots of fish, some tired coral and some which is bravely growing back, and if you are vigilant and attentive, you will encounter a sea turtle or two as you float in that special underwater world. There were two hatchings during my stay with hundreds of the little babies clamboring confusedly toward the light of the bar, mistaking it for the moon, while the guests assisted the staff in putting them into buckets and taking them down the beach to safety. The staff is attentive, friendly and respectful. You will not be bothered by vendors and hangers on as you rest on the beach. Yes, there is a problem with the access to beach loungers. But that is because of greedy guests who claim them with their towels early in the morning, even though they may not be using them for more than an hour or two. However, I always found someplace in the shade if I searched. The food was fresh and quite tasty. There were three or four vegetable choices every day, and these were not tired, overcooked veggies, these were edible and attractive. I was lucky to enjoy the best Yucatecan chicken mole while I was there. Twice. Truly a complex mixture of spicing and chocolate and unique in the Yucatecan way. I wasn't drinking alcohol on this trip because I was too tired and the goal was to restore my immune system, so I can't comment on the quality of the drinks. But the people who were drinking like fishes every single day seemed happy. The beds are typical Mexican beds. This is Mexico. Deal with it. The rooms are all cleaned thoroughly every day by honest housekeepers. Make sure to tip them well. I loved the hammocks and swung peacefully every afternoon, book in hand, watching the clouds drift by and listening to the surf. And I slept soundly every night with the waves rolling and tumbling in my ears. I look forward to returning. I hope they don't change a thing. "

"We visited from June 16 until June 25. My wife and I, our two children and their spouses, our 5 grandchildren visited a year ago and we visited again, and we plan to return in the next year. Akumal Beach Resort was outstanding. The closeness to the Caribbean, the excellence of the rooms, and the dining room, the excellence of the cuisine, its being all-inclusive, were all major attributes. There were more activities than one could participate in. In a scale of 1 to 10, I give it a 10. I am also responding for my daughter who you sent a similar request for a review. All eleven of us were very fond of Akumal Beach Resort, and give it a 10."

"We loved the Akumal Beach Resort and loved it for many reasons: 1. Size. The hotel is a medium-sized place with maybe 80 rooms, one restaurant and one pool. Lots of the newer hotels are built on the Vegas model, with four restaurants and massive pools and shows and noise and too many people. 2. Architecture. The hotel is somewhat older and has beautiful thatched-roof construction over its restaurant and lobby areas, and over its beachside chaise lounge huts. The lobby has lovely hardwood floors and the conical roof rises about 40 feet above it. The rooms themselves are large, with marble-tile vanity tops and shower surfaces. The rooms are three stories high and have high ceilings. They're poured-concrete rooms, so they're quiet. You have a sliding glass door and also a sliding screen, so you are able to turn off the A/C and hear the waves crashing on the beach, which is maybe 30 yards from your bed. Some marketing genius figured out that you will think you're getting an insider deal when you book Akumal Beach by putting 'free ocean view upgrade if you book now.' Turns out, every room has an ocean view. The upper floors have a better view of the turquoise Caribbean than the lower level, so you should request a second or third-level room. 3. The site. If you 'fly' the Riviera Maya via Google Earth, you'll note that Akumal Beach has great protection from the waves because of its reef, which spans the entire bay that the beach fronts. You have fabulous snorkeling right out of your door. The reef is maybe 200 yards from the beach, but there are lots of fish-laden, coral-encrusted rocks just 50 yards from shore. Should you stay at the Akumal Beach Resort, don't try to enter the salt water from anywhere south of the hotel pool. The rocks come right up to the shore on the south half of the bay, and this is very treacherous walking. If you enter north of the pool, you will find a nice level sandy area and shortly you'll be out amid the coral. 4. Nature. 'Akumal' refers to sea turtles. They're everywhere in June and July. There were at least two dozen marked turtle nests along the hotel's beach. I saw two sea turtles while snorkeling right in front of the hotel. While walking the beach my wife and I noticed two 'turtle tracks' that indicated a female had crawled up and laid her eggs the night before. The nest hadn't been marked yet. Apart from the turtles, you have the wondrous kaleidoscope of fish on the reef just off the beach. The main reef spans the entire beach and keeps the waves from spoiling your snorkeling, as the breakers crash 200 yards off the beach, leaving calm waters even on high-wind days. The hotel is beautifully landscaped; you have coconut palms with hammocks between your porch and the beach. Behind the hotel is a 5. The food and drink. Akumal Beach offers an everything-included package that includes three great meals a day and open bar. The food is tasty and varied. Every dinner has at least a chicken, a pork or beef, and a fish entree, along with a huge selection of vegetables, along with a huge salad bar, along with a kaleidoscope of fruit, along with wine or beer or soft drinks or fruit juice, and so on. Lunch usually has a big vat of guacamole, along with great meat and vegetable dishes. Breakfast includes daily omelets made to order, along with bacon or sausage, hash browns, toast, and lots of vegetables. All meals are in a beautiful dining hall with tablecloths on hardwood tables, a soaring thatched roof, relaxing music, and the Caribbean literally an underhand stone's throw away. Sea turtle nests are 15 feet from some tables. On top of this the hotel offers an la carte restaurant that has alternating Italian and Mexican menus. I consider this overkill, as the buffet dinner is so varied and tasty. The bar has good quality liquor, and the bartenders make margaritas the old-fashioned way by hand-pouring and shaking all the ingredients. Opposite the bar is a social area with daily events: bingo, disco, and some sort of dating-game-style fun program. However, the music is not too loud and the atmosphere is not the frenzied, party-hardy ambience you get at some of the Cancun hotels. 6. The people. The hotel staff are helpful and friendly. Bartenders and waitstaff are prompt and courteous. Just about everyone speaks English. The Mexican people are by nature warm and hospitable. This is a well-managed place. The staff keep it clean. Our only maintenance problem was no hot water one morning; the problem was fixed by noon. The clientele is a mix of USA tourists and Latin Americans. I would guess the mix is about 50:50. You'll see singles of all ages, families with younger kids, retirees, groups of college students, honeymooners/the whole gamut. I recommend the Akumal Beach Resort so highly that I will give it the best of all recommendations: I'll be back. "

"What a fun relaxing enjoyable time. Both of us enjoyed this trip immensely, the beach and snorkeling and small stores were great. We went to a more casual restaurant on Half Moon Bay and had lobster must have been close to 14 oz. it was so good. The beds were real hard so we got a sponge on our bed and it really helped a lot you must ask for them is all, we took our our pillows just put them in a vacuum bag and sucked out the air. Larry sat on them then we zipped them then used a straw to suck out the rest of the air, that way it took very little room in our suitcases. They did not have washcloths so we brought our own. Just do home work, read all the reviews. Rooms were simple no musty smell in our room which was in building 6. Our ocean view was great. A little short on beach chairs but a lot of people put their towels on them and never saw them return till almost evening. But for the most part we usually got a spot. Drinks were fine, food was great in the buffet and there was always something for every one. The turkey was the best we ever had and the alacarte restaurant was great too! Did have one main course there we didn't like so they gave us the other main course and it was great."

"We spent a very nice week in Mexico in this hotel from 24 to 31 October. Overal hotel was very good. Room was quite simple but clean and neat. Food was really great. Lots of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as meat and chicken. Beach was very beautigul and we even saw sea turtles just next to the beach."
