"Our stay was amazing at this resort. Our favs are the mango mojito, Miami Vice, avocado & papaya smoothies (which were not on the menu but asked our go-to server ).
Food is great and the lunch & dinner menu switches every other day (the steak was salty and tough though but it's okay as we didn't expect everything to be that perfect). Our Host/Butler Hazael was very knowledgeable and attentive to our needs (and very fluent in english as well). The one bedroom suite was HUGE!!!
Tip accordingly, especially housekeeping & servers. Will highly recommend to family & friends."

"I told the general manager , that I would be back, and I just returned from my second visit. This time I took my diving/golfing buddies... Who are more picky than my kids!! And they LOVED it!!! The service is awesome, the food is excellent. The rooms are very clean. Very laid back. No 'tequila time' from an MC around the pool... VERY relaxing!! I have travelled a lot, and especially in PV, and this is STILL the only place I would go back to. So much so, I'm taking my sister, niece and kids back there this summer!!..."

"Great hotel, wonderful staff, for the most part. Food was a slight disappointment as the menu didn't change much in the ala cart restaurant. Never made reservations for Luciano's so no comment from there. If you order 'sausage' off the breakfast menu, be prepared to get hot dogs... Seems they don't know what pork breakfast sausage is! Two bartendars are the best bar tenders there, and one is more than entertaining! He wasn't our butler, but was always more than helpful! Not that it's important, but we had a strange struggle to keep our hotel supplied slippers. our maid would take them and not supply any more. with the cold marble floors they were a nice thing to have. Overall, a great stay. Hotel is relatively close to everything. Don't be scarred to take the buses. It saves a ton of money and you get a little taste of the local people. Very warm and friendly for the most part. Also, in the past we have always used U.S. money without a problem. Next time we will exchange for peso's as it's much easier for transactions and you won't find yourself asking, did we just get taken!"

"We enjoyed our week stay at the Sunset Plaza. It was close to many activities and things to see. The ocean view from the rooms was fantastic and sitting out by the pool or on the balcony to watch the sunset was very relaxing.
The service was impeccable and staff was happy, always smiling, and willing to do anything for you. We enjoyed the the ala carte menus, and were usually very happy with our meals. Occasionally we would have liked them served at a higher temperature, but they did have the best beef I have had in Mexico. The free wifi worked very well in the room, the lobby, and most of the outdoor areas.
The check out process was a let down. Since we had a flight late in the day of check out we knew we would have some time at the resort after checking out. We were advised to eat lunch before, since we would have to pay for any food or drink once checked out. Check out is noon, and lunch cannot be ordered or served before 12:30. Other all-inclusives we have been to seem to be able to accommodate this type of situation, but not here. What would it really cost them to to provide some drinks and food for a few hours, at the end of a week long stay? It was a shame to have this aggravation as the last interaction with the staff after such a pleasant week."

"From the champagne greeting to check out, the Sunset Plaza Resort was fantastic! One of the few places I've stayed that lives up to it's advertising. Even during the busy spring break it never felt crowded and the staff had time to see to our every need. The staff member at the swim up bar would often have a cold beer ready for me when he saw me swimming his way with my empty. Another staff memeber helped my wife with a problem she had with a merchant downtown. He arranged for her to get her money back on bad purchase. Gratuities are included in the package and there is no pressure to give more but we did leave a little extra for the exceptional service.
The all inclusive package is a good value. The food was great with enough variety to keep it interesting. Room service is available for a surcharge.
The WiFi is a little weak at times but if you have to be on line all the time, you probably need a vacation.
We will definitely go back again."

"I just got back from a week long stay at the Sunset Plaza. The resort was amazing for 7 days of relaxation. The view and pool area were beautiful. The resort is on the smaller side, which was perfect for us. There are three restaurants and the food is DELICIOUS!! Getting the all-inclusive is a must. The staff is incredible and so friendly, we miss them already! Everything is clean and the room was spacious with a lovely balcony. We also used the gym everyday, which had treadmills, bikes, and a small weight set. HIGHLY RECOMMEND."

"Outstanding!!! I'm in the hospitality field; having a keen critical eye. This resort was 10 out of 10 from check in with a champagne welcome, butler escort to room with a complete visual tour of amenities, to a speedy check out 10 days later. Expectations were exceeded; it was as if they anticipated our needs. We were all inclusive w/ meals. Food was great with plenty of menu options to choose from at all seatings. Pools were wonderfully clean(one reserved for kids only; not many kids) and one pool away from swim up bar where only adults (quiet) could swim/relax and socialize. I commented numerous times how QUIET the resort seemed. Never crowded. Much like an upscale cruise line (Oceana) where you wonder where all the guests/passengers are. We're going back ASAP!!!!"

"This resort was amazing. The 1 bedroom we got was beautiful, with a great patio and beautiful view to the pools and ocean. They cleaned our room 2 times a day, probably because we were in our honeymooon, but they would leave 2 hershey's kisses on our bed everyday and our last night left us a plate with delicious desserts. Everyone on staff was super friendly and attentive, everyone. I got a massage there and the lady even braided my hair as an extra. The bar service was great and the bar tenders were very friendly. The food was delicious and the service was fast and the staff was very attentive. They had good amenities. Everyone we met really had great things to say about the resort and the service. The resort was not overcrowded, so you got that personalized attention. It's a great place for families and couples who want to relax."

"My fiance and I spent Feb 17-21 at Sunset and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The staff were friendly and accommodating--especially our butler, ladies at the concierge desk, and all the bartenders. Our room was clean. View was amazing. It was a good mix of old and young. We went there to relax--it is a good place for couples and families--probably wouldn't come here with a big group to party. We participated in the free kayaking, ping pong, volleyball, etc. Food was standard all inclusive fare--nothing to write home about. We took the bus to downtown PV for 600 pesos (~60cents). Cab to and from airport was about $10-12. We took the bus and walked around downtown PV at night--felt completely safe. The vendors and shop keepers are really annoying though, constantly yelling at us, trying to convince us to drink at the bar. In general, though, a great experience. Would definitely stay at Sunset again."

"One of the best trips ever to Puerto Vallarta. This hotel is perfect in size, not too crowded and the staff and management the friendliest we have ever encountered. The first day of our weeklong stay one of our party could not leave the room with a bad shoulder. The hotel manager made a point of coming to the room himself to check on the condition of our family member and continuously sought us out to inquire how we were doing. This is the type of treatment we received from all the staff, our butler to the room maids and restaurant and bar staff. As a result of his we will definitely be returning to the Sunset Plaza Resort and Spa. I highly recommend this resort.

"This is one of the best vacations we have ever had.
From the time we checked in, until we left, we were treated like royalty.
The rooms are outstanding, the service is second to none.
The quality of the food is first rate. The poolside service is as good as it gets.
The view from the rooms is breathtaking.
If you like champagne on a beer budet, this is definately the place to go.
The size of the hotel was perfect. Nothing was ever crowded.
In my opinion, for the money, it just does not get any better.
Also, a mere $5.00 for a taxi ride to downtown. How do you beat that??"

"We just returned (Jan. 6-12th) from our stay at the Sunset Plaza Beach All-Inclusive. We had a party of 11 ranging in ages from 19 months to 70. We stayed in 4 rooms located on the 12th floor. Our stay was incredible! We have stayed in several larger resorts and have never felt like 'part of the family' as we did at this resort. The staff is so courteous and helpful. To make arrangements for so many people can be overwhelming, however with the help of Luis, Manual, and so many others we were able to get around Puerto Vallarta without a hitch.
Food at all-inclusive resorts can get old as it did here. It was good, and they do rotate menus but it does get old. This is not a reason not to go here though as this is the case at any resort type hotel. Since we felt like the rates were reasonable we took the family out to other restaurants a few times.
If you are searching for a 'party' resort, then this is probably not the place for you. They did have live music nightly at the bar and several people did hang out there but my 23 year old son probably would have like to have a more party scene. Since that was not what we were going there for it matched our needs fine.
The resort is located right along the main road therefore making it simple to catch a bus, taxi or whatever you need. To get down to the Malecon was about a 10 minute public bus ride that was 40 pesos. Cheap and easy even with little ones!!! The taxi ride was only around 5-6 pesos so even that was very reasonable.
There were a few problems with checking out which were a little annoying (one of our bags was sent to the airport with the couple that left before us) however, it would not ever deter us from returning to this resort. Good value, beautiful resort, incredible staff!
We would definitely recommend this resort to anyone searching for a more intimate all-inclusive experience."

"We chose an all-inclusive package at Sunset Plaza and were not disappointed with what we experienced. The staff and service was above and beyond as was the cleanliness of the room and facilities. The bar and wait staff were always amicable and eager to please, and tipping was well earned and appreciated. I tried almost everything on the menu and was pleased with the freshness and flavor of all that I had. The Italian Restaurant did not have as much menu variety, but what it did have was scrumptious. The hotel is situated in a good location allowing for quick access by taxi to downtown south or the marina north. Walking to local stores or banks was convenient. All rooms have the pleasure of ample balcony space to enjoy oceanview/mountainview sunsets. The only negative was the tiny complimentary fridge was not very cold so we didn't use it but did have use of the restaurant freezer for our fish until returning home. All in all, I would recommend the facility for anyone wanting a low-key relaxing environment with great food and drink readily available."

"Absolutely WONDERFUL experience! We had never been to PV before. We went to Cabo, and our resort there (although nice) had weak drinks and lousy food. This place was AWESOME! Great drinks, great food, great atmosphere. The staff: I can't remember all the names, but all were great. ALL the staff was just amazing though. It's also only a 5 minute cab ride to old town. Old town (The Malecon) was the best. I'd definitely go back again and again! FANTASTIC!!! :o)"

"This is a beautiful property, very modern, very up to date. I had an standard room, which was standard for sure. It was nice and clean but not real attractive, good use some pop of color and more warmness to it. The bathroom is very modern and the maid service keeps it very clean. It includes a blow dryer and bath soap/gel amenties. Maid service keeps the towels stocked and is always your bed on made impeccably. They come around twice a day to ensure all is satisfactory. The butler service is exemplary. and incredibly kind, generous in spirit and so willing to do anything that ensures a very comfortable stay. I wasnt feeling good on one day and they came upstairs to offer to go to the pharmacy to get medicine. They always have a smile on their face and take care of your ever need. This is a very relaxing, quiet resort. There isnt any entertainment during the week, it is pool. dining, massage and thats it. So if you are in to totally relaxation, quiet time this is the place for you.
The food is hit and miss. I tried both the pool cafe and the Italian dining and it really is hit or miss. The wait staff does try so incredibly hard, but the food is just blah, it is lacking in flavor for most of it. The lunch service is the best with fish tacos and taquitos! Fresh fruit plate in the morning is enjoyable as well. Drinks by the pool are generous but lacking in alcohol. It would appear they are watered down. Premium alcohol is an additional charge. I did do the all inclusive plan which I do recommend if you are going to be around the pool and hotel for most of your trip.
The staff is quite friendly in its entirety. I found them so enjoyable, so friendly and enjoyable. It is approriate to tip them each day to encourage the continued awesome service they provide.
Again, beautiful property overall."

"We had a wonderful time. We were greeted by a lady who offered us a glass of champaigne. Check in was easy and also provided us a nice, scented towellette with lavender to freshen up. They accompanied us to our room which was a suite with two bathes, a kitchenette, dinnette area, living room, and a wonderful balcony with a table of four and two sun lounges. The bedroom was seperate with a king size bed, a jacuzzi, and a separate shower from the commode. We received excellent service from the bellmen. We had excellent bar service. Our cups were always full. An excellent job with breakfast and dinner service. The only comment I have is the menu did not change. More variety would have been ideal. The water temperature was not the best, but the service made up for that. All the staff was attentive and I would recommend the Sunset to anyone. We enjoyed the whole week we were there. We had one on one service. There were no kids. It was not peak season; therefore, no complaints from us regarding much. This service was impecable and would return."

GARY G from OGDEN, UTAH
"My wife and I just finished our 5-day stay at the Sunset Plaza for our 30th anniversary (August 18-22, 2012). We decided to stay at the Sunset after reading all the positive reviews, which by the way, we read extensively. We are very happy with our decision and our stay was excellente'. Because of our 30th anniversary there were things provided by the staff during our stay that were a surprise and a delight. Its evident the truth was written in all the many previous reviews about the employees that were mentioned because we encountered these same dedicated workers and found superb hospitality. The man who is in charge of guest services, makes you feel at home from the moment you walk in to when you leave. Our butler, was very courteous and pleasant as well as all the staff in the lobby. We found that throughout the resort everyone had their English working well. We did not use room service once during our stay but I'm sure it would have been the best.
As others have written, the place is a more modern hotel, decorated very nicely and immaculate in cleanliness inside and out. The hotel operations reminded me of an ant colony. All the workers are very busy scurrying about handling their daily tasks here and there, moving around with a purpose and intent, keeping the nest neat and orderly. Nothing out of place and everyone happy to do their part. We experienced only positive professional friendly service during our stay. Even the staff seemed happy to be working with one another. The hotel is very secure and we felt safe. They have security throughout the grounds and check room numbers as you come and go the property. The hotel is conveniently located between the airport, marina and malacon. It seems $8.00 dollar taxi rides take you anywhere. They will exchange pesos change at the lobby check in. There is an ATM just down the alley to the plaza next door. We never experienced the time-share people in the lobby. We pretty much just stayed away. It wasn't a big deal.
Rooms: The tower of rooms offer unique views as your room goes from one side to the other. You can see the beachfront from your balcony or the city from your room door hallway. If you open both doors you get a nice breeze through the room. Of course, the higher in the tower the better the view and probably better the breeze. That said, we did not encounter any major problems with the noise of which is actually music and a DJ on a microphone. A couple times a day we would hear it but simply closing our balcony door muffled it fine. Nor did it bother us too much out by the pool. The air conditioning works great but at night we chose to leave our balcony door open with the lighter shades drawn and listen to the waves. Neither of us experienced any mosquito or bug bites during our stay. In the morning when it got a bit more humid we then closed the door and turned back on the air. The balcony door has some sort of sensor that shuts off the air conditioning when it's open. So don't leave your balcony door ajar all day if you expect to come back to a cooled room. The rooms were very clean and all the amenities you would need except for maybe 2 things. They only provide 1 roll of TP, which I don't understand, so you have to ask for more in between room service. There is no ice machine but your butler service is happy to bring some to you if need be. Didn't watch much TV but there are mostly Spanish stations but did find channel 5 Los Angeles and 2 New York stations as well as some sports stations. There is a DVD player as well. The single rooms (not suites) do not have a coffee maker but the coffee is right outside the lobby door every morning. There is good water pressure and never lacked hot water. Listen carefully to your butler when they explain "room service... procedures. I won't go into it here. There is a safe in the closet we used every day. Our butler, brought us a small fridge with a few sodas and water. They replace what you use daily as well as the 2 bottles of water in the bathroom. I put the water bottles in the fridge to keep cold. Although we were all inclusive they provide 2 cans of beer at a time in the room. I went next door to the plaza and got a 6 pack as well. The maid service was great and thorough. Use your "do not disturb... sign if you want your privacy. They were always right on our room when we left. They will also turn down your beds at night and leave you some chocolate. Another reason for the "do not disturb... sign if you hit the room early.
The food: Everyone has different tastes and this has got to be the biggest difference in everyone's reviews. We are laid back and fairly easy to please food wise and thought overall the food was great. My only complaint would be that the portions were sometimes too small but being all-inclusive we could order whatever. We ate every meal at the Sunset during our stay. The Mirador, which is the main food and bar area by the pool, is where we ate all the time. We only ate at the Italian restaurant once and really because we had too as the Mirador was closed one evening although we were going to eat there at least once. It was very good but were not the fancy shmancy type eaters. They could use some music in this restaurant though as you could hear a pin drop. At the Mirador, the menus change daily or alternate and we were happy with everything we ate. I loved the short rib tacos and the fish veracruz on the Mexican menu. Breakfast was very good and had many options. Again the scrambled eggs portion was a bit small so I ordered double each time and it was brought without question. They even added bacon that was not on the menu. I will admit, that on a 5-day stay it was ample enough, but perhaps with a 1-week stay or longer it may get a bit redundant. But everything was cooked well and plates were arranged with creativity. If you are eating most of your meals at the hotel go all inclusive. You get more and can order whenever - however. If you're a heavier drinker it will pay for itself. They have a deli restaurant but we did not eat there. I cannot vouch for the issues associated with what people complain about all-inclusive liquor brand choices. I drink mostly beer. My wife loved the Margaritas and I had a few mixed drinks that were good. If they used a cheaper brand because we were all-inclusive, I did not see or taste it.
Pool service: The pool is awesome and refreshing. The first day I thought it was too warm but was cooler after that day. We had awesome pool service. Our glasses were never empty. We moved around a bit here and there at the main pool and also at the adult pool but the bartender always found us. We were here during the rainy season so the place was fairly empty so a lounge was never a problem but I don't think it is ever really a problem here as it is not a giant hotel. I especially like the lounges on the swim step that sit in the water %u2013 very nice! We only went down to the beach once. The water was warm and fairly clean as was the beach. Some days the waves were pounding and others very mellow. The lounges and beds on the beach are roped off from the vendors but they are really only feet away but once you say no they leave you alone and not very pushy at all. This a relaxing pool with softer music and not really any activities at least while we were there. We wanted to relax and enjoy each others company and we got just that. There is a separate adult pool as well. The sit down in the water bar was great too. If you want crazy partying with loud music atmosphere this is not the place for you. However, it would be a great addition if they had some entertainment here and there, like a guy on a guitar singing especially at night around the bar. There really is no nightlife at the Sunset.
Tipping: Other reviews suggest always use pesos. Although we did for the most part, we found the mighty American dollar is appreciated very much so. If you're the conservative money type than you'll want to take advantage of the exchange rate. But for minor tipping it works great. After all they turn it in for more pesos. Again we were all-inclusive but took smaller change with us to the pool. In my opinion, if you're there for multiple days you're better off to get acquainted with the staff right away with a good tip and introduction as I did and get the comfortability going. Since you will be encountering these same people everyday you might as well make friends fast. It makes for a friendlier stay and service more attentive. We tipped at all meals as well. These people work hard and appreciate you being there. So if you want your glasses kept filled a good tip at the start works wonders. (including the bar tender)
Airport %u2013 IMPORTANT/ WARNING: If you have not been to PV before, heed this warning. When you come out of the customs area you will go through some double doors and there to meet you will be a barrage of timeshare staff workers trying to get you to their counters. They will offer a taxi or whatever it takes to get your attention. Unless you want a time-share tour of a hotel and the freebies that sometime go with it,,,,, KEEP WALKING through this room to the outside curb. DO NOT STOP. These people are ruthless in getting your attention. There are plenty of taxis out there waiting curbside. We prepaid and took care of our transportation online so we new they would be waiting for us. We found a man holding a sign with our name on it. We also booked our return trip at the same time. This same guy was a nice guy and able to give us pointers on tours and things to do. That said, a taxi curbside would be cheaper so we found out, but again it was all arranged and paid for our convenience. We did use the ATM at the airport so we had pesos for our hotel arrival for immediate tipping. The ATM gave large bills but the lobby check-in change it for us.
Our experience was so awesome we will certainly go back to the Sunset. It would be like visiting our family again!

"My children and I just returned from a 5 night stay and had a wonderful time! We stayed in the 1 room suite and it was huge! My only complaints about the room (and they are so minor they almost aren't worth mentioning) are that you have to let the water run for a few minutes to get hot water and the DVD player wasn't hooked up properly (my children wanted to watch a movie one night when they were really worn out). Otherwise it was amazing! They spared no expense and it was extremely comfortable and clean.
The food at the restaurants was really good. The service was great. The waiters were all very friendly (with the exception of 1). We got to know a few of them well while we were there. I do suggest bringing several $20 and $50 pesos for tipping at the restaurants and bar if you want decent service. Even though it is an all-inclusive, they survive on their tips and are very grateful for them.
We stayed over a weekend and found that the Aqua bar was closed on Sunday and Monday. That was frustrating. When my kids wanted a soda, or I wanted a drink, we had to get out of the pool and go into the restaurant. There was an occasional waiter walking around, but it was rare.
I had read the other reviews about the hotel next door having music that was loud and annoying. I was prepared for it, but didn't realize the hotel was as close as it was. It butts up against Sunset's property. Our balcony overlooked it directly. Fortunately, it didn't go past 10 at night. However, after doing an excursion, and being exhausted, it was the last thing we wanted to listen to. Or, as others have mentioned, while having a nice dinner or relaxing by the pool. However, it is out of control of Sunset. Just be prepared for it going in. Also, it isn't going on all day, every day.
I also caution you to stay away from the 'concierge'. She is really trying to sell timeshares. Her desk sits in the middle of the lobby. She pulls you in by offering maps of the property and then by trying to give deals on excursions.
My final recommendation is to bring Pesos with you. While you can use US currency, most locals prefer Pesos because they can use it immediately for the bus ride home or to purchase groceries on the way home (as we heard from a few of the staff in conversations)."

"This was our 30 year wedding anniversary, and we choose to spend it at Sunset Plaza Beach. The food, staff, and resort could not have been better. Staff went above and beyond to make our stay very memorable. The staff were always cleaning, trimming weeds, bushes, etc., and picking up after the guests. From our balcony, we saw dolphins and sea lions feeding in the ocean. What an incredible site!! Much time was spent in the bars and pools. The pools were cleaner then any I have ever seen!! Would highly recommend this resort to anyone looking for value, quality and service!!"

"My girlfriend and I just returned from a 5 night stay at the Sunset Plaza. We went with the all inclusive option and the 1 bedroom suite which was wonderful.
You can get a good idea for how nice the place is by reading some of the other reviews. I agree, it is very nice, clean and luxurious. I cannot say for sure but some of the pictures on the website were not of the actual rooms, at least not the one we stayed in. But it was still VERY nice. Granite and travertine tile everywhere. The views from the balcony are just incredible.
I read almost all the reviews on this place here and on other websites before we decided to book. I did read ALL of the negative reviews and I feel like that helped me avoid some of the issues other people had. For instance, some were surprised to find that even though they paid for all inclusive, it did not cover food after 12:00pm on the day they checked out.
One thing I would like to point out is the service at the restaurants. When we first arrived we didn't have any small change for tips. I noticed that one or two of the waiters attitudes were not as friendly for the first day or two because of that. I did tip at every meal after that and it was a very pleasant experience. Most of the waiters are nice regardless of tip. My suggestion is, take some money for tips. I really don't know if it was enough or not but I would leave 40-50 pesos after each meal which is only $3-4USD. I would leave a little more at Luciano because it was clearly a nicer restaurant and there are multiple waiters per table.
The food is good at the deli and main restaurant. I would not call it amazing but it's good especially considering it's 'free' with the all inclusive plan. Luciano is very good but only open in the evening for dinner.
Just being honest, poolside service seemed a little selective. Not always but it seemed like those that did not have the all inclusive plan were taken care of a little better. We spent quite a bit of time out there and were maybe approached twice to ask if we wanted a drink or anything. I will also say, though, that the main poolside waiters were both ALWAYS running around and working very hard. They should probably get one or two more poolside waitstaff for busy seasons. You could also swim up to the bar and get a drink at any time.
There were a couple things that were slightly irritating that the hotel itself had no control over. For instance, the hotel next door which is literally right over the wall. We could see their whole courtyard and pool and everything from our balcony. Anyway, their music and/or activities were sometimes quite loud and we could hear it from inside our room.
Another thing was the noise of the children in Luciano. I feel like there should be certain times when they are not allowed in the restaurant. Like after 9 or something. It was VERY distracting and made it impossible to enjoy our dinner. Like I said, it is clearly a nicer restaurant and having to listen to them yelling and screaming while trying to eat was awful. Not really the hotels fault but maybe the should consider a curfew for just that restaurant so those without kids can relax.
I picked out a few gripes but honestly, I'm not a complainer or picky and we had an absolute WONDERFUL time. They are VERY nice and accommodating. Anything you could possibly need help with, they are more than willing. If you want to book activities you can do it there in the hotel as well.
The hotel does have a time share and other than them mentioning it to us to get a discount on a dinner cruise, we never heard anything about it. They did not try to push it or sell it to us after we said no which I very much appreciated.
Last I would just say that there will always be those people who aren't happy or have a bad experience. I've spent a lot of time in hot climate cultured countries and I think some people just don't understand the differences. Not all complaints can be attributed to differences in culture but some of them definitely are. I would not let the negative reviews influence your decision to stay here. It's a wonderful place and the staff is equally good. I would definitely, without a doubt, go back.
Thank you Sunset Plaza for a wonderful vacation!

"We just returned from a wonderful family vacation to Puerto Vallarta. I'm so glad we chose to stay at this resort. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The food was delicious, I highly recommend the 'All-Inclusive' option... well worth it!!! The Adult Pool was tranquil and relaxing!!! And the views from every room are gorgeous!! A couple of negatives: the hotel next door is not as tranquil, and the loud noise and music from their pool carried over (they cater to a younger rowdy crowd). Another negative, our friends who were staying at a different hotel, came to visit us one day, and they were not allowed to go up to our room, which was extremely annoying. Other than that, I would go back and I would recommend this hotel to friends."

"I'm so happy that we chose Sunset Plaza for our visit in Puerto Vallarta! it's a very new, very modern resort & with only 100 room, it will never have the feel of a big mega-mall resort but rather an intimate stay. the staff was above & beyond, really great personal care, this i say would be the biggest highlight of Sunset Plaza. it's close to the airport so it's very conveniently placed in the bay, the food was quite good & they try very hard to make everything right, the drinks of course were lovely, the infinity pools were sparkling & huge, 3 elevated hot tubs, good workout facility, huge rooms, & they make a lot of activities available as you need. i really can't say enough good words about this resort, i feel fortunate to have chosen this one out of all the hundreds of options. i would definitely choose Sunset Plaza again!"

"exceeded our expectations. We vacation yearly in Puerto Vallarta and we would rate the resort and spa as one of the top resorts. The staff could not have been more helpful, friendly, and attentive. The entire resort, from our room to the lobby to fitness facilities to the pool was impeccably maintained.
The location was convenient to downtown, the marina, and the airport and the view were beautiful. Each meal was an experience of its own. The food matched that of any 4-5 star restaurant.
We will definitely recommend it to all our friends and we hope to return soon."

Housekeeping checked our room twice a day which I had never seen before. The place is so tranquil. We really enjoyed cause all we wanted is to relax. Food is delicious, such a nice experience for being the first time for our daughter to see the beach, first time for my husband to be in a Mexican beach and for me 15 years without going to the beach at all."

"My husband and I went on a couples trip with another couple and we had a great time. The hotel was beautiful and the Junior Ocean Suite is definitely worth the upgrade fee vs. the standard room. The rooms were clean and modern with flat screen TVs, ipod docking stations, granite countertops, and modern decor. The resort, however, was smaller that what we were used to. There were only 2 restaurants and the Italian restaurant was only open 1 day out of the 5 we spent on the resort. The food was luke warm so we had to always ask for it hot and fresh, but once we did, they delivered. The hotel staff was outstanding and our butler was amazing. He was very helpful but not overbearing. He even offered to iron our clothes while we were poolside....amazing service! If you want a relaxing and quiet stay, this is definitely a great resort! All inclusive is also well worth it!"

"Our trip to PV was great! amazing! Before we left I read many of the reviews. I found all of them not to be the case on our visit. The resort and rooms were very clean. The restaurants were fabulous and the food was delicious. The staff was very attentive and always very helpful! We had a situation with a mischievous little boy in the room next to us and they were loud until late at night and the manager had our rooms moved and it even worked out better as we were put on a higher floor and the view was amazing. If we asked for something we were accommodated immediately. It is a much smaller resort than I usually stay at but we were not at all disappointed. If you go to PV I strongly recommend the hotel and also be sure to go to the Rhythms of the Night tour!!! It was great! Also we did all-inclusive...well worth it."

"My wife and I had a wonderful time at this resort. We just returned home on June 8th, 2012. We were a bit caught off guard by all of the people, in the airport, trying to sell time-shares. After arriving at the resort we got settled in and had a great six days. There were several things we enjoyed about this resort but a few of the highlights would be the staff (extremely professional and friendly), the small community feel of the resort, and the food (the best I have had at an all-inclusive). We read several reviews of this resort before we booked and many people said they did not enjoy the food, or that it 'was just OK'. I could not disagree more! I don't know if they have changed some of the food choices or something since these people visited or what, but breakfast, lunch, and dinner were fantastic. The only things we did not like were the people selling miscellaneous stuff every time you try to go down to the beach area. Also, the beach is small and not very good for swimming or spending time on the beach itself. This said, my wife and I spent most of our time swimming in or lying out by the awesome infinity pool that overlooks the ocean. Two other things we did enjoy were the beautiful panoramic ocean views from our room and the activities manager. We went kayaking, played ping pong, played bingo, and did many other activities that are included in the all-inclusive package. Overall, this resort is a great place to relax and meet new people. Very chill place. Hope this helps!"

"We had a wonderful time. The resort was excellent! The service was superb, they were always there if you needed anything. We did all-inclusive and the food and drinks were great. We were a little worried about there only being 2 restaurants and 1 cafe, however there were many options, and the food was very good. The entire resort was very clean. The king bed, two room suite we stayed in was also very clean. The room was very nice. (Too big for just 2 of us though :)) We could not stop talking about how nice the resort was and how pleasant and welcoming the staff was. The butlers were always there if we needed anything or had any questions. As this was our first trip to Mexico, we were a little nervous, however everyone at the resort was very helpful and assuring. The resort also had an activity director that hosted kayaking in the ocean, ping pong, dart tournaments, black jack, cooking lessons, volleyball, and even offered deals to go out on the town in the evening. We would recommend anyone to this resort, and plan on returning at some time!!"

"We had a wonderful time in Puerto Vallarta. The staff were extremely friendly and provided great service. By the end of the trip they knew our names and we knew theirs which was a nice change from a big-resort feel. The food is excellent, especially for an all-inclusive resort. All of the rooms have a beautiful ocean view and are very clean. Maid service is twice a day, which is a nice perk! The only complaint we had is the room was a bit noisy at times when people were walking by, apparently the walls are paper thin, but this was more of an annoyance than a disturbance."

We walked along the beach and checked out some of the other properties. By far, Sunset Plaza was the most relaxing. It wasn't overrun by families and kids in the pool. We had peaceful breakfasts overlooking the bay. Service was wonderful at the property. Our one-bedroom suite was perfect for our 9-day stay. The food was pretty good and we enjoyed the spa as well. We will definitely go back to Sunset Plaza on our next trip to PVR."

"My husband and I were so excited to plan our 1st anniversary trip, which would be our honeymoon trip. We searched multiple sites and read reviews upon reviews. We arrived to the beautiful resort and were greeted with champagne and warm smiles. The lobby was beautiful and smelled great! We were checked in, escorted to our room and giving a tour of the room and the resort itself. It's a smaller resort, but the personal service and attention was by far better than anywhere I've ever stayed before. They have 2 restuarants and I was initially concerned that we would not have a good variety, but the menu was full of options and we were never disappointed. From breakfast, lunch to dinner the food was amazing and the service was fabulous. Our trip turned to nightmare when my husband had a heart attack. I believe that the doctor was on staff as she arrived in our room very quickly. Everyone was very fast and professional and many staff come to attend to me as well. The front desk manager Miguel drove me to the hospital behind the ambulance and stayed with me at the ER while I received the news that my husband had passed away. Miguel never left my side and took me all the places that I need to go and translated anything that I needed. I was a stranger to him, but he treated me like I was part of his family. The resort had a new room for me and our butler helped me pack up and move rooms. He stayed with me so I was not alone and also gave me the space that I needed too. He contacted the airlines for me and help to plan my return trip home the next day. My husband had made an impact on all the staff that we came in contact to, with his smiles and fun loving nature. I could tell that all the staff had been affected by these events and they all grieved with me, comforted me and cried with me. The staff has even emailed me now that I am home to check on me. I cannot express enough gratitude to the staff, but I can hightly recommend them to all my family and family. I own a time share right down the street from them, but I will only return to this resort as the staff is now considered my Puerto Vallarta family. "

"Had the most amazing time during our stay here, the staff was extremely accommodating and friendly, the grounds impeccably maintained and the room was gorgeous with the most amazing view. There wasn't anything one of the staff member would not do to try and go the extra mile! The only thing I will say that was disappointing at all was that some days the food was AMAZING and other days when I would order the same thing again, it was not the same, sometimes missing ingredients or having some ingredients on it that made it taste completely different. Clearly each chef made each dish to their own tastes and likings, but the inconsistency in the dishes made it hard to figure out what would be good on what day. Other than that, LOVED it and will definitely recommend"

"We had a wonderful time. The staff was amazing. They were very welcoming, respectful and willing to do whatever it took to make our vacation a memorable one. The food was good, not gourmet, but good. The waiters quickly learned our names, room numbers and preferences. All inclusive was a good way to go for us. We particularly enjoyed the Italian restaurant. Overall, Sunset Plaza was a quality resort experience and a good value as well."

"The hotel is excellent. It was clean and nice and new. The staff was just excellent. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. If you needed anything at all they were there willing and able. The only thing I would of changed was to have some music that was more modern. If you are looking for a relaxing vacation with nothing to worry about this is the place for you. You don't have to do a thing if you don't want to. Plently of help and right there for all your needs and wants. Loved my vacation here."

"There were 3 families with grown-ups from mid 30s to mid 40s and 6 kids from 18 months to 9 yrs. Overall it was a fantastic trip. The place was very nice and clean, the staff very friendly and accommodating. The fact that the resort is a little on the small side was actually a plus for us with all the kids. the beach was right there, as were the pools and the kids club. It was very easy for us to have a good time on our own while letting the kids play. That being said, I'm not sure how this would be if you were just after a quiet romantic getaway. There were plenty of couples, but there were also a fair amount of other families. The 2 things that weren't that great were 1- the beach and ocean. But apparently that's an issue with lots of Puerto Vallarta. It's not that it was horrible, it just wasn't the most awesome. 2- the food wasn't that great. By the 3rd day we found plenty of stuff that was good enough, it's just that overall the food was a bit average. Very edible, don't get me wrong, but just not great. Other than that we had a fantastic time. Would definitely recommend it to people."

"We just returned from 5 days at the Sunset Plaza Resort in Puerto Vallarta. What a wonderful time we had! The staff is wonderful, gracious, accomodating, and just fantastic. The grounds are beautiful, the food great, and the accomodations are just lovely. We wanted a nice relaxing getaway, and that is exactly what we got. If you are looking for the all-night rum punch parties this is NOT the place for you. The all-inclusive is the way to go; so many food options and high-end drinks included. Just ignore the timeshare people, and they leave you alone. Tips: bring your own coffee for after day 1 (cheap paper filter and coffee grounds), tip daily for good service, just relax and enjoy!"

"This hotel is the nicest 4.5 star hotel that I have stayed. The one bedroom suite was very large and like brand new. Very clean and modern, 2 large screen TVs, 2 large showers and a large tub w/jets, king size bed that you could actially sleep on, full kitchen, that we did not use. A balcony that is about 20 feet wide and 10 ft deep with nice wicker table and 2 chaise lounges. This all looking into a beautiful view of the bay. I don't think you could find a nicer place to stay. The staff was great and so helpfull. The only negative thing I can say about the hotel is the staff is always trying to funnel you to the person at the time share desk. They want you to go on a 2 hour tour of the propery next door to join the ' Vacation Club' That is where you buy points to be used on future vacations"

"Loved it! We just returned - what a great trip! Our suite on the 11th floor was amazing, spacious, clean and a terrific balcony. We really enjoyed the pools, hot tub and swim up bar. Did not go to the beach area much -its small and there are pesky vendors but with such a great pool who needs anything else. We tried all of the food options..room service, the deli, Mirador, Luciano and even snacks around the pool. The food was pretty good - made to order instead of sloppy buffets was a nice change for an all inclusive. We felt it was a good value but did not feel guilty is we had a meal outside the resort either. I wish they gave better clarification about tipping -its awkward to know who to tip and how much? They were pretty hard sell about us attending a time share presentation - we did not. Otherwise the staff and everyone in PV was really friendly and helpful. We loved the location of the hotel, close to taxi bus and tours. We really enjoyed Puerto Vallarta and especially this resort!"

"I have been to Mexico several times and the rooms here were by far the nicest I have stayed in. More like a condo, they were new, trendy and clean and with beautiful ocean views! The food was pretty good, with all meals served a la carte which was a nice touch. The service was excellent! This resort is quite small which makes for a very relaxing vacation. There is no loud music, no events staff, and a real laid back, quiet holiday. This is definately not for everyone. The adult pool was nice and quiet and had several bed/cabanas available which were awesome if you needed to stay shaded for a day or two! Overall this was a great resort and I would DEFINATELY reccommend it to someone looking for a quiet relaxing holiday with beautiful ocean view rooms!"

"We just got back a few hours ago from our one week rest! We're both teachers and went to relax, unwind, and renew. All three objectives exceeded our expectations. We spent a little extra on the one bedroom suite and found it to be spacious and peaceful. Despite the arrival two nights before our trip ended of a roomful of teens starting their spring break, we luckily were able to move into the bedroom portion of the suite, so even excess noise from next door can be completely masked because of the enormous size of the suite! The balcony is gorgeous with a panorama view of the entire bay. We were on the seventh floor and would agree with other reviewers that the higher the better, to mask the noise from the large pool crowd in the resort next door (they knew how to party :) ) Tips: bring your own ground coffee and get a dollar store filter basket, as you get ONE pack of coffee the first night and nothing afterwards. Kitchen utensils and cups, bowls, plates, pots, pans would make it easy to go non-inclusive and feed yourself, but we were into 'relax' so cooking just would have been another chore. We found the food delicious (my fav. was the octopus casserole!) I'm a triathlete and spent an hour or two each day in the small but efficient gym - two treadmills, two stationary bikes and a couple of ellipticals, plus free weights and some yoga mats (hint: turn off the t.v. - half an hour of Mexican television is enough to make you want to feed yourself to the sharks!) My wife suggests that more variety of fruit and salads would add the 'health' component to the menus, but if you are diligent you can eat very well by avoiding the deep fried North American items of course. The pool is GORGEOUS for a triathlete - I managed lapping sessions of 30 to 45 minutes dailiy with noone else in the pool - HINT: Swim in the morning at or before 9 a.m. if they let you in early :) All the breakfast eaters will be sitting there watching you strut your swimming stuff, but hey that's what speedos are for Haha! We will definitely go back in a few years IF the new two towers proposed (which would triple the size :( ) are done - check first to make sure they haven't started construction which we heard was going to be beginning of 2013 but who really knows? I think the size right now is perfect!"

"We spent 10 days here and loved this new resort. We had the all-inclusive and my husband and I both thought the food much better than most all-inclusives. We had a beautiful deluxe room (more like an apartment) with a great view. It was very clean, the bathrooms and walk-in closet were huge with a jacuzzi tub and shower. The service was excellent, with some minor language translation problems with ordering from the menu at the outdoor restaurant there. The little deli offered very good, light lunches and dinners. The time-share person at the hotel tried to talk us up but after one attempt left us alone. When we needed taxi service there was always a bellman by the front lobby to radio for the taxis that hang out by this resort. The grounds were lovely and the adults only pool had canopied beds to lounge on. The ride into downtown/Oldtown was about 7 minutes. We would definitely recommend this resort."

"My wife and I travel and cruise frequently and even though we are members of Palace Resorts (Cancun, Nuevo Vallarta etc.) we would return to the Sunset Plaza and have recommended it to our friends. The property is conveniently located (only about 2 blocks from The Plaza Liquors; great prices for tequila connoisseurs) and within minutes, or 50 pesos, of downtown and major local destinations. Our room was on the sixth floor and was reasonably well appointed, very clean and quiet (until four inconsiderate idiots checked in next door but the management was quick to get them under control). We went with the all inclusive package and I believe it is the best value in the long run. All rooms have an excellent ocean view, ours had a refrigerator, no freezer, and was stocked daily with beer, juice and soda. I was a little disappointed they didn't stock Pacifico but that was minor. Everything is close and convenient, nice pools, one with a swim up bar and another for adults only as well as three very nice jacuzzi pools. The restaurants and deli are outstanding; all the food is fresh (If you're eating seafood, it was swimming in the ocean that morning and the Tamarind shrimp are the best I can remember eating.) The coffee leaves a little to be desired and the mixed drinks are less than consistent but that is more than compensated for by everything else. The staff is friendly, courteous, considerate and expedius (take along a few extra pesos for them even though 'gratuities' are 'included' in the all-inclusive bookings, they're worth it and they don't make that much). We'll definitely return to the Sunset Plaza if/when we return to Puerto Vallarta."

"Overall a very nice place. Very clean. The maid service was spotty, only one day was the room cleaned very well, obviously a different maid from the other days. The dining options were limited and the food quality was not consistent so we ate out 3 nights even though we were AI. Exchange rates are very favourable these days so a great meal at a fine restaurant was $100 or so, great value. Overall because of the price we would stay here again but management needs to stress to staff that they have to deliver a high quality product consistently. Staff was very friendly and eager to please so it comes down to training."

"We had a great experience at the Sunset Plaza in PV. Our suite was very nice...modern and clean. We typically don't do the all-inclusive because we like to explore and try different place, but we were happy with the food choices for the most part in this all-inclusive package. There were a few meals that were not that great (over-cooked red snapper and flavorless pasta dish at Luciano's). We tried some items that we wouldn't typically choose, just to add variety, and they all ended up very good. I don't care for eggs much, so I asked if I could have a BLT during breakfast and they were more than happy to accommodate. They were always willing to substitute items if they could, so for those who were not happy about the menu items, I think that could be adjusted to fit almost anyone's needs just by asking. We were impressed with the staff. Everyone was very pleasant and accommodating. Taxis are a half block away and are there to pick you up in minutes. The staff can tell you exactly what the taxi cost will be to any location, so there's no surprises. The weather was absolutely beautiful every day. The pools and grounds are very well maintained. We tipped the servers all the time. They do such a good job and well worst a few dollars to be pampered. I agree with others about the 'butler service'. I think that could just remove that from their accommodations listing. We would definitely go back to this resort, especially if we got the same price again."

"Overall we were quite pleased. We had a few issues that the Butler or Supervisors would not resolve. If you want coffee daily in your room you will pay a room service fee. I thought with a deluxe oceanview, all inclusive that they would include coffe with the coffeemaker in our room. WRONG! You get a coffemaker but no coffee without a charge. We had also made arrangements prior to our arrival for flowers and goodies to be in our room (for the birthday girl) and they were not there nor did they arrange for any special accomodations over the five days we were there."

"Although we have traveled to many destinations in Mexico, this was our first vacation in Puerto Vallarta and we absolutely LOVED everything about it. But without a doubt, the staff - accomodations - service and food was the #1 reason the trip was so enjoyable! The room was beautiful, spacious and clean. The food and drinks were wonderful and there was always a variety of items to choose from. The staff went above and beyond to make sure our stay was perfect in every way. The service was just amazing and we felt so pampered! We also LOVED the size of the resort as it was not too small but not too big. It was just a very friendly atmosphere and we really felt like we got to know many of the staff that were with us throughout the week - a real treat! I would definitely recommend this hotel to others and we are hoping to return again next year! It makes me SMILE just to think about every moment in PV..... a wonderful vacation! Thanks everyone!"

"Nice Property, great service, wonderful kids club. 'Concierge service' was puzzling, seems like they are positioning it as a value-add, but truthfully there is no reason for it. Positioned as your personal helper for your stay, but really no different than a bellman, and front desk staff Restaurant/Food options limited to one restaurant, with another that opens part tme inconsistenly and not as published. Great staff, bad dining. Cold food, wrong orders, over 1 hour waits for a meal after seated. Kitchen and wait staff completely uncordinated."

"Wow--great experience for our first international trip with our boys (7 and 9 years)! This is a beautiful hotel, just north of the boardwalk and old town of PV. You can easily take a taxi (or bus) into the main portion of town. The location is gorgeous, right on the beach. This section of the beach is small and the waves/current can get pretty strong so keep smaller kids close. To a person, staff were very friendly, helpful and attentive; only 2 approaches on the time share promo but a firm no was all it took to stop the sales push. My only suggestion for improvement is to expand options for food and offer a self-serve buffet at breakfast. Every meal is a sit-down affair, for 6 of us each meal was 45 min-1 hour total. This usually was fine for lunch and dinner but it slowed us down in the AM when we were wanting to head off for that day's adventures. I agree with other reviewers on the restaurants--the Italian place was not great, the deli was only open sporadically. My younger son is a very picky eater but the wait staff were always able to accomodate and make items not on the set menu (no kids' menu). Not a ton of activities going on at the hotel, but we were busy enough and enjoyed relaxing when back at the hotel. There are laundry facilities if you need to do laundry; your butler can do it for a fee or you can get tokens at the front desk and do it yourself (about $10 for one load wash and dry). No laundry soap at the hotel, need to buy it at a store. Rooms were beautiful, all with ocean views and a nice but small workout room."

"My wife and I stayed at Sunset Plaza in February and December of last year. The resort was nice and staff was pleasant but we had severe problems. We were asked to do a time share tour in February and we did so. We were not interested in the time share but we did buy a vacation package from RCI that sounded like a good deal. When we tried to use it we discovered the sales rep had lied to us and we were out $1500. We met with our representative on our return trip several times and he did nothing to help us.This obviously ruined our December visit. All he would do was give us a 'discounted 'week in the off season that was only $100 cheaper than Bookit got us for prime time so that was obviously worthless to us. All efforts since then to get a refund have been futile. These are not good people. Buyer beware."

"We had an tremendously fun and relaxing stay, from the first minute in front of the lobby, meeting the manager and the butler, to the checkout five days later. The staff was so friendly and helpful, from checkin, to room service, to the bar/pool areas, and all the places to eat. We were upgraded to the jacuzzi penthouse suite when we got there. What a tremendous surprise, the view was amazing from the patios, and the accomadations in the suite were absolutely stunning. All the people we met were so nice and fun (mostly from Canada), all age groups were there and got along. The lobby bar was relaxing and fun after a long day on the beach and by the pools, one night they had a small band that happily played all requests. We enjoyed the food choices, and we were able to order pretty much any food at any time per our request. Even the beach vendors were fun and respectful (the resort had a guy keeping an eye on them).
We will definately return next year and hope to see the same staff and guests!
I would recommend just taking a taxi to and from the airport, it is just as cheap and fast as other options without having to make some extra phone calls."

"The location of this Hotel is closer to downtown than some other hotels. About a 15-20 minute slow paced walk to downtown. You have to walk down a busy street to get there, so that is not peaceful. But once you get upon the shops it gives you time to stop and break. By the way, the airport cabs will insist on charging the mandated rate of $195 pesos (about $17 USD) from the airport to the hotel (about a 10 minute ride in traffic). It used to be you could negotiate more, but not so much. I got them to reduce to 150 pesos but was difficult to do, and they weren't happy about it. You can walk a ways to get a cheaper cab out to the main street, but I was travelling with Mom and she doesn't walk so good with lots of luggage. So it's a pain. Outside of the airport, from the hotel back to the airport, for instance, the cab ride is only 80 pesos, or about $6 USD. So much cheaper and a big difference.
The hotel is very clean and I cannot say enough good things about how friendly and kind the staff was in all areas - the bars, the restaurant, the lobby, etc. There was no bother about any time share.
I am a foodie. Some things were very nice - fresh fish, the french toast, the farmers egg dish, and such. This was all in the main dining area. Sort of an open air restaurant with some coverage. We tried the Italian restaurant which is by reservation only - managed to get in on short notice and it was fairly empty at 7 p.m. The service was outstanding and very friendly. The food is so/so. I've been to MX over 20 times and I just think they don't really get American food. Unless you go to the Four Seasons or high end restaurants in downtown Puerto Vallarta (where you will pay the price for the 5 star food), the food is just different. So for the price of the Sunset all inclusive package, the food is on par with the cost. I got the salmon and vegetables, which was nice. I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5. My Mom got the steak. We didn't pay for the 'upgrade' steak which was extra outside our package, so maybe that would be better. But her's was so/so. About a 3. Edible and ok, but not good or great. They were so kind to bring us fun extra's -- little brushchetta type appetizer, with tapanede. (sp, sorry). The minestrone soup was great but the spaghetti in it was weird. Small noodles would be better. Dessert was ok. I am a huge Dessert fan - eat it every night at home. There was much to be desired. The presentation was always great, but again, the taste, texture, etc. was just ok. Not really good. We went down to the OXXO and got M & M's. The only thing I find that doesn't taste different in Mexico.
The gym was nice and clean -- I used it a few times. Treadmill nice. TV in the room to watch while working out. Cable was in English too, so nice. Better channels, it seemed, in the gym over the rooms (cable was not good for English choice, but you can borrow DVD's downstairs which we did). There is also Eliptical, and a few bikes in the gym. A bench with some light weights. Yoga mat, exercise ball, etc so you can get a nice workout in if you'd like. Never crowded and easy to use.
While we never used them, they had many nice activities planned each day, darts, cooking classes, volleyball, kayaking. I'm a big kayaking fan and do it often so would have tried that if time allowed. Looked fun. I have been the Puerto Vallarta over 10 times and just so you know, the ocean is not great for swimming. It can be done, and I have done it often, but the water is murky and not so fun. You must wear booties (can buy cheap on line for $10 or so or in a sports store) in order to protect your feet. Lots and lots of rocks on the ocean floor. I have known people to get injured surfing here too with the rocks and the quick shallowness of the water around them. I don't recommend it. I prefer the ocean in Cancuun/Cozumel. Much more forgiving. My son is younger, though, and has gone in the ocean many times here at age 8, 10, and so on, so it can be done.
We didn't upgrade the room - got two queen beds, which were nice enough. The room was average but clean. Nothing special but nothing lacking. Quiet all nights but the last -- seemed like we had a partying group above us til 1 a.m. There is music piped in around the development but never so much that it disturbed my stay or effected sleep.
The pool areas were nice, and though the chairs mostly seemed taken by noonish, we could always find one or two and squeeze in. The pool never seemed crowded. There is also an adult only pool which we dropped by but didn't hang out at.
The food, as I said, was manageable. The drinks, however, were very unreliable. The first day they were ok. Wine in the restaurant nice but not exciting. Mixed drinks by the pool ok. Definitely not strong. I don't want to get drunk off the first drink, but I like to have a nice feeling after 2 drinks, and don't really want to drink a lot more. Very small amount of alcohol in the drinks, so I was just taking in calories with the frozen drinks with no results. Not what I wanted. I switched to beer and that was fine. They had a good selection and light beers too. When on vacation, though, I like the fun, fruity frozen drinks, and I don't want to have to drink 10 of them to feel good. Not even 5 of them, as it is too many calories. So I wish they could have made them stronger and better. I could have asked, but I didn't. Everyone was so nice I am sure they would have tried. The pool side service was always friendly and positive(although a little slow or non existent at times), whether you tipped or not. I always tipped a little - a peso or two. Several people didn't though and they still got good service. The staff really deserves a high recommendation for their positive attitudes and helpful demeanor. I didn't spend much time in the pools but from what I saw they were very clean and well kept.
I would try this resort again and upgrade to a nicer room. The standard room seemed small after a few days, esp. the bathroom. Just a standard stall and sink. Not much room to move or put out stuff. Closet had ample space, Used the safe in the room and it worked fine. Beds were clean and comfortable. A/C worked nice. VERY nice view of the ocean full on, even though we were only on level 3.
Most of the staff speaks a little English, so no problem there. I got by with my broken Spanish and the were helpful to speak that with me as well. Very good trip overall. I'm not pining away for it, but I would go back to relax."

Since it was off season there were only 2 restaurants open the main restaurant Lusanno's which served a large variety of very delicious form fish to filet the bar outdoor restaurant is where breakfast and lunch is served and on alternate nights serves dinner ...we had 2 very special waiters that were just amazing they care for every and all your needs if its not on the menu they will get it and have it made for you...we developed a very close relationship with them ..we found the food in both places very tasty and of very good quality PS... you don't need to worry about the water its perfect to drink.... the hotel has 4 pools 1 an adult only very private the other areas are open and also quite and open the bar is open all the time and serves what ever you want ...The tequilla was absolutely delicious ....We felt very comfortable at this resort we would definitely return...the decor of the hotel is modern the grounds are perfectly kept and very clean The hotel offers many sports and activities for you and your guest ...The massage is a must makes you feel like a new person ...Our only comment was on the beach the peddlers try to sell you everything and can be very annoying ...The one major exclusive feature of this hotel is the staff and exceptional service you are given fron the day you arrive to the day you leave Thank you Sunset Plaza Beach resort"

"This hotel really is all it's written to be about. From check-in to check-out (even late check-out), they treat you like VIP. We received such excellent service throughout the hotel that we felt very attended to and welcomed. The adult pool was a great place to spend our days, as we went when there was a large number of Mexican families taking their vacations as well and they almost all had children, and we spent the time drinking and eating delicious food. We didn't eat breakfast too much there (it's just okay) and did go to the time share presentation, where they told us that they would be tearing down both the hotels on either side and building one larger hotel, which I was quite sad about, since the whole charm of the place is that there is only 100 or so rooms, and they are able to give you personalized service.
We had butlers, and they made sure we were enjoying ourselves thoroughly (it was our honeymoon), and one set up a romantic night in our room on our second to last night (definitely worth the money). All the food and drink we had at the Sunset was AMAZING! Go all-inclusive if you can, and upgrade to the one bedroom. DEFINITELY WORTH IT!!"

"We stayed at Sunset Plaza July 3-11, 2012 and it was EXCELLENT!! From the minute we walked in the door and were greeted with champagne until the moment we stepped into the cab on our last day there. Everyone was very friendly and accomodating.
We had the 1 bedroom suite...LOVED IT!!! Well worth the money.
My husband, with the help of our personal butler, planned a romantic night for us. They had rose petals and towels that had been made to look like 'heart swans' on our bed and a bubble bath jacuzzi ready when we came back from our excursion for the day. It was beautiful and I could tell that the butler was happy to have been able to help my hubby plan it.
The view from our room was breath taking!! And I loved that we got to chose our 'room scent' everyday. It was a nice touch.
The balcony was HUGE! Loved the lounge chairs.
The food was pretty good, not GREAT, but we kept going back so it wasn't bad. :) The Mirador restaurant had the better food of the 2 restaurants onsite. (The other being an Italian restaurant)
The resort is in a great location too! It's not too far from the airport and it's about 2.5 miles from El Malecon.
There are only 2 things that I would consider 'cons'
1. The hotel next door was pretty noisy. It was like a party hotel or something. Always playing loud music and people yelling. (But it wasn't unbearable and it wasn't an all night ordeal)
2. Sunset is a 'timeshare' resort, so they will ask you to attend a presentation, BUT they are not pushy.
All in all, I'd definitely recommend this resort to friends and family and I KNOW when we return that we will be staying here. They were extremely nice and always willing to help.
As a matter of fact, I had burned my leg while riding an ATV and when I got back to the resort they had one of the medics come down and give me some ointment and bandages to wrap my leg. Thank goodness! Otherwise I would have been miserable for the rest of our vacay! (And it was only day 2!)"

"we completed our 4 day stay at Sunset on Sunday, Feb 19. I have to say this was not a good week to travel. The weather was gloomy and foggy. Temps hovered around 70. Had one good sunny day on Sat. Anyway, as far as the hotel, it is smaller than most resorts we've been to. We didn't have to wait to be seated at anytime. We always found lounge chairs by the pool. The swim up bar staff were so friendly and nice. They catered to both of my girls (8 and 11). The Italian restaurant, Lucianos, was really good. The appetizers were fantastic. The main eating area also had great food. My only complaint is that the wait staff was slow and not always efficient. Further, the chefs would prepare the same dish differently. BUT, the food was good and the staff was very friendly. Not many activities for pre-teens. The vendors on the beach didn't really 'hound' us. They did attempt to sell their items, but did not push. Overall, enjoyed our stay. Very relaxing."

"The resort is truly a five star. The food is all el a carte (no buffets). Any issue is dealt with immediately. The only complaint is that there was a wedding at the resort and the closed the pool down at 4 pm one day and the one restaurant and hot tubs the next day. As paying guests we have a right to those facilities. A DJ played for the wedding dance and they were given a time of 1 a.m. Even though complaints were made to the front desk nothing was done. We were on the 10th floor and it was like we were sitting next to the music (that loud). With children, tours booked this was unacceptable. The guests were not notified of loud music or the restaurant being shut down . This would of given guests the option of leaving the resort."

"We had a wonderful time until our last night when there was a huge wedding at the hotel that was not announced (until a few hours before and still no information was given about what would happen). It basically took over the entire hotel even though the entire wedding party was not even staying at the hotel. The main restaurant closed, making every guest go to the small Italian restaurant (which we felt was very poor quality and service), and we had to wait over an hour because they didn't have enough tables to fit everyone (which was a problem as our baby had to go to bed and got cranky), and then had very slow, poor service. But, the worst was there was extremely loud rave-type music from 8pm until 2am. There was no way we could sleep and our baby kept waking up. We called to complain many times to the front desk about the music, but nothing was done. It really ruined our trip as it was our last night and we missed the entire morning the next day b/c we had to sleep in...and then they wouldn't even let us have a later check out time. We left our vacation more tired than when we arrived. We were extremely disappointed that a 4 star hotel would allow a wedding to disturb all the guests at the hotel (again, the wedding guests were not even staying there!). We would like a refund, but have not heard back from the hotel on this issue. I would highly suggest asking if there are going to be any weddings during your trip (although not sure if they will tell you!).
Another thing that did not affect us, but several other guests is that they often run out of the type of room you book. Many people booked suites and arrived to find there were none left and they had to take a normal room (which if you have a family is a major problem b/c you end up not having a room for a napping/sleeping child!). They asked us to downgrade to a smaller room, but since we had already started in the suite, we said no.
It is too bad as the first 3 nights of our stay were great. Very good food in the main restaurant, good service, decent bar (surprised that the wine was decent!), nice rooms, nice pool, quiet location (not in the middle of town), not too far from the main part of Puerto Vallarta (about a 30 min walk)."

"So, this is a beautiful hotel - with excellent staff - very, very nice people work there and if you take a minute to ask, they will share interesting stories about their lives. . . As an 'all-inclusive' it fell a little short - there are 2 restaurants and one deli. Only 1 restaurant is open all the time - the Italian restaurant is not good when it's open - and the Mirador which is open daily only has 2 menu changes for dinner and only one breakfast/lunch menu ever. The food is good, but for a week gets tedious. There are also not really any 'activities' at this resort. It's a VERY small place. If you are thinking 'club med' this is NOT the place. If you want a nice centrally located, very clean hotel with very nice staff and a beautiful pool - then this IS the place for you. You have to decide what is important to you. The grounds are beautiful, the pool is great, the drinks are great, the people are nice, the room was BEAUTIFUL. I had a great time, but wouldn't return due to the lack of activities/food choices, however, I really have nothing bad to say per se if that makes sense. One 'weird' thing was the 'personal butler' thing - on our first day we were introduced to our personal butler - we never saw him again, not even once. Anyhow! If the worst 'complaint' i can make is lack of food choice, they are doing pretty good. We were invited to time share presentation, we declined with no hassle at all.
The beach area is very small as well, but nice.
OH - and DEFINITELY SKIP THE CITY TOUR/TEQUILA FACTORY TOUR - it's a trip to 'preferred vendors' which was pushed - big waste of money and more or less just irritating.
Anyhow, great place overall, i'm just not one to go back to places I've been!"

"Overall a most pleasant and great trip. Food variety is always a concern with the AI VACATIONS and Sunset tried to get great variety. With only 2 eating options that became difficult as the 10 days came to an end. Friendliness and accomodations are excellent."

"Excellent hotel! We had a great time here, just the vacation we needed. Everything is so new, clean and pristine. The views from the rooms are amazing. They gave us a room on the 14th floor. The food was great, a la carte(didn't have to worry about any buffets) It was like eating in a nice restaurant 3 times a day. The pools are awesome, perfect temperature with little palapas with beds around the adult pool. There's three jacuzzis as well. The staff were great and so friendly. We walked in the front doors they sat us down and one of the butlers brought us a glass of champagne each and some cool face cloths. They treated us so well and the swim up bar is a great time too. The only thing I would suggest is some nighttime entertainment but if you just need some r & r its the perfect place. They had a wedding the weekend we were there so the service was a bit more sparse but as an apology they gave every guest a bottle of wine and I think they did quite well with the resources they had. I totally recommend this place, the nicest place I've ever stayed! (we met a lot of great guests too which made it that much better)"

"Beautiful venue, all staff very polite and helpful. Our only issue was we made a reservation for Luciano's restaurant @ 8pm for a group of 11 and when we arrived they had no record of our reservation and we ended up waiting 1.5hrs to be seated. The staff was helpful and brought us appetizers in the bar and kept checking in with us. Only saw our butler on check-in, now mind you we didn't seek him out as we didn't need anything. The only negative I have to say about the property is there is hardly any beach area. The chairs were never put down on the beach as the tide was too high and there was no room. This area of Puerto Vallarta is not made for leisurely strolls along the beach. The sunsets were MAGNIFICENT every night, no matter if it was clear or cloudy. Aqua bartender and waiter were superb! We never had to wait for our drinks or food and they even made us 'special surprises'! All in all a wonderful trip!"

"Attentive staff, top-tier amenities, exceptional food and small size. Nothing not to like. I appreciate not being one of the 'herd.' With just 109 rooms, there was never a wait or a line. Pool is great. The only sand in this sun screen is the pesky beach vendors who prey on you if you attempt to lounge oceanside. I can see returning to the Sunset Plaza in the future. No disappointments"

"We needed a break but didn't want to spend all of our time traveling. Puerto Vallarta was perfect. And Sunset Plaza Beach Resort was ouststanding. The physical quality of the hotel was among the best we have ever stayed in... As an Architect the contemporary design and beautiful attention to detail was amazing.
I am not usually very good at remembering names but the restaurant staff made our stay a delight... . Always attentive, always moving and never in a hurry. The concierage staff were just as attentive and friendly.
The food was excellent, though I wish there was more Mexican in their menus. The meals were all very tasty and beautifully presented.
The Resort offers both All-inclusive and room only ... all-inclusive is definitely the way to go.
Highly recommended ... we will be back."

"Great value, staff was friendly and accommodating. Our suite was gorgeous, really enjoyed spending down time there. There should be entertainment in the evenings either in the Bar or near the pool area. There were a few restaurants at the property but only Mirador was open during our 5 days there. Would have like to eat in a different setting. Would definitely go back someday. Hopefully some of my concerns will be taken into consideration."

"In order to 'set the stage' I first must say that I tried to contact Sunset Plaza Beach Resort via e-mail 3 times with questions regarding our stay @ their resort. NO REPLY>so upon arrival I already was frustrated. Check-in was delayed due to multiple check-ins; however we were placed outside (resort side), given our champagne and then forgotten. Not really a big deal but added to our frustration. Standard room was a 'hotel' room with wonderful floors, great bath (shower exhilirating) and fabulous extra large balcony. Next issue was the smoking from the adjacent room--on the balcony and with our doors open to enjoy the waves we had the smoke in our room--needless to say we were unhappy since the hotel is a 'non-smoking' facility. It took till the next day to get this issue resolved--by moving us to another room.---'Yes we had to move, not the smokers (I understood that the smokers were charged $500 for violating the no-smoking policy)! This also meant that the people we were traveling with had to be moved. The 'Butler' manager offered us help to move--2 butlers for each room. Our butlers decided to tell the bellboy to help me and they disappeared--too lazy to help a guest and outright insubordination. I ended up having to repack everything and do the move which should have been handled by the 'butler'. Turn down service and pillow menu a nice touch. In my opinion the 'butler' service is just a 'glorified request service' just like you would expect to receive @ a hotel. The bellboy delivered the luggage and the maids took care of the room and turn down service. I will say that one butler helped me the day I had the flu and stayed in our room--thank you. The 'Butler' service was confined to the rooms. The rest of the service was provided by waiters, bellboys, towel service and grounds keepers. In reference to one of my questions was the confusion many other reviewers have stated about whether or not there is a buffet. NO BUFFET, menus the same each day for both restaurants (Tues-Thurs-maybe Sat? for the Italian one). The third 'deli' food place has not yet opened. Basically you eat every meal @ the same restaurant. The web-site does state that there is a buffet and I pointed that out to them. No buffet but our dining experience was amazing---waiters were able to have prepared for us meals 'our' way if we did not order from the menu .Quality fresh food and premium drinks---can't go wrong. Grounds were immaculate and nice warm pools. Great that the 'sunbeds' on the beach came with the all-inclusive packiage. Speaking of 'all-inclusive' the tips are not included as in other resorts. No presssure to do the 'time share' thing and the usual tour service one finds at a resort. Presently I consider Sunset Plaza to be a 'hotel'--not a 'resort'. There is no evening entertainment as you find @ a resort. Grounds are small but adequate for the 112 rooms they serve. I 'heard' that the owners have plans to tear down the 2 adjacent resorts now in operation and build facilities such as Sunset Plaza in their place. If this happens it will be a wonderful expansive resort. It however is located in a 'dirty' part of Puerto Vallarta---surroundings are pure city. Sunset Plaza is located to the center of the bay and gets direct ocean currents---not the more soothing waves in other parts of the bay that are more secluded. All in all I believe that Sunset Plaza strives to be an upper end 'resort' but it is just a hotel with great decor and fabulous dining."

"Overall, we had a nice trip to the Sunset Plaza Beach All-Inclusive Resort and Spa. The food quality, while generally very good, was not consistenly prepared well. On one occasion, the chicken entre was not cooked completely. The menu was the same for the entire week (the Italian menu was the only dinner menu), but the Italian restaurant itself was never even open. Meal service was incredibly slow. This would suggest more and better training is necessary in both food preparation, as well as serving. People were generally very, very nice. The time share (or points share) sales pitch was a waste of time. If they are going to do that, it ought to happen in the new building. The 'sister' properties are not close in terms of quality, so why do a sales pitch from one of the older dilapidated facilities? Our room was very nice, the physical plant was new and the size (only 109 units) makes for a much better experience since there were never lines or crowds."

"Highly Recommended! Definetly will return to this outstanding modern hotel..very clean and so chic, not so crowded. It is so close to the airport and we walked downtown to the Malecon boardwalk from the hotel and only took 15mins. We loved our single bedroom all inclusive with the kitchen suite and felt like we were home. Excellent food, staff and service, loved that it had a gym and the pillow and scent menu for your room and personal butler....wow, so impressive! It was very nice to wake up in the morning and sit on the terrace to see the family of wild dolphins swim across the ocean on the same time everyday. We think it was awesome for them to build this hotel with every single room facing the ocean no matter what type of room you book. It is so worth staying here and it was very hard leaving. We will definetly be back with families and friends next time!"

"The staff was outstanding, especially the Maitre D in the Mirador restaurant, who would accommodate our off-menu requests,, if possible. The Deli was not open during our stay and Luicciano's was only open two evenings
In my humble opinion, the resort would be improved with some evening entertainment.
It is, however, a beautiful resort and the staff goes out of their way to make sure you have a good time"

Check in was flawless and the butler showed us to our room. With 2 small children we just wanted to relax. The food was great and the staff loved our 2 kids. My eldest daughter used the kids club the whole time we vacationed while the baby was a hit with the staff who continuously fawned over her.
Our priceless moment will be when my 3 year old released her baby turtle she named Gus.
In a word - wonderful!"

"We just got back from a 5 day stay at Sunset Plaza. We got a smoking deal through bookit.com, and we were not dissappointed at all! It is a beautiful resort, right on the beach and very close to downtown. The butler service was great. The food was good. Three of the staff members really went out of their way for us, and all the rest of the staff was friendly, helpful and accommodating. The pillow menu and aromatherapy are a nice touch. We also appreciated the glass of champaigne upon arrival. After traveling, it was just the right thing. The decor of the hotel is great. The hotel was very quiet while we were there - no construction and also not that many guests. It was a great place to relax. The pools and jacuzzi's are great, and we LOVED the sea turtle release. The Italian restaurant is just okay, but the regular restuarant was great. If something we wanted wasn't on the menu, they would still serve it to us. We had a fantastic time and only wish we could go back right away!"

"We had a blast in Puerto Vallarta, this resort is next to none. We felt secure and all of our needs were tended to. We got some great service and the room was amazing. Stay in the one bedroom suite or larger if possible. The all inclusive was great really saved us a ton of cash and we ate and drank to our hearts content and then some. Only drawback is they only have the one restaurant El Mirador and it is located outside. You are in the elements when eating which is great on nice days but bad on hot ones or wet ones. The food variety is a little on the low side and some of the things which are asked for tend to be wrong but I get the same issues in the US with waiters getting my order wrong. I would say the restaurant needs to be updated and the Italian restaurant Luciano is OK but I think they need to have some things worked out. AC in Luciano needs to work and the waiters and staff need to learn how to better take food orders. Also it would be helpful if they had separate room service apart from El Mirador because cold food was warm and hot food was luke warm by the time it got to us when we did eat in. Other than the restaurant this is the place to stay at. Awesome in every aspect."

"This place was absolutely gorgeous. They were always there when we had questions. One day we didn't want what the had on the menu, so they made whatever we asked for. A convenient place to downtown too."

"This is the second time that we've stayed at the Sunset Plaza, and it was just as great as the first. Though the resort is rather small, it's perfect for a short, luxurious get-away. The rooms have both a pillow 'menu' and linen scent 'menu', and the beds are incredibly comfortable. However, the best part of the resort is the food and the staff. The main restaurant (there are only two on-site) offers incredible food off of an extensive menu, including such luxuries as filet mignon, shitake mushrooms and ahi tuna. The staff is extremely accomodating, and always happy to make exceptions (such as eating off of the main lunch menu while lounging by the pool).
We had a wonderful time, and are already looking forward to our next visit."

"My wife and I had a great time at the Sunset Plaza Beach Resort. We stayed for 4 nights in mid-September on the all-inclusive plan, and I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a trip to PV.
The hotel was amazing. The staff were excellent. The facilities were great. Everything was very clean and still looking brand new. The food was very good for an all inclusive. Our room was very large. Overall a great place for a couple to go!
The two pools are amazing and very clean. We were very lucky and pretty much had the adult pool to ourselves for 3 days!
If I had to think of something to complain about I would have liked a bit more food/(alcoholic) drinks available in the room fridge, and some coffee as well.

"My wife and I had a great time on our second trip here. The staff is all very friendly and the one bedroom suites are amazing.
The only complaints we had were that the Yoga classes didn't seem to actually happen and we had one waiter who seemed to never get our order right and that was frustrating. The rest of the staff especially the butlers were great and very accommodating.
Highly recommended. "

"We had the best time here at the Sunset plaza. The staff was really nice and went over and above to please us. The food was not only great it looked amazing also. We went on the off season and it was perfect, not to busy. They let you release baby sea turtles into the ocean! That was the highlight, I loved it. I would go back and send people here, I loved it! Best food and service ive had in a long time.
Thank you to all the staff at this amazing resort for making this trip a blast!
