This has been my go to place to stay when visiting Playa del Carmen. I feel like I'm being generous by giving them an average rating. My husband & I travel to Mexico every year. We visit different places just to try something new & we tend to stay in Rui Palace Resorts when they are available. So, not my first rodeo. Unfortunately, I think it will be my last time to stay here. It's been 4 yrs since we last stayed here, but it's just not the same grand place that it used to be. The good th... Read more

Sure, this hotel is a little run down in places, and the food on occasion was cold. Our room had the typical caribbean musty smell, but the staff at this hotel more than made up for anything I could have had a little grumble about - they were all so friendly, very polite, very accommodating, always smiling and they all looked so happy in their jobs - a credit to the management personnel. I never ever felt like a tip was required, such a change from many other resorts we have visited. A special m... Read more

A group of 6 of us traveled during the week of 5/14-5/21/16. We stayed at the Riu Palace Peninsula in Cancun in 2015, so we figured we would give the Riu Palace Riviera Maya a try. By the way, we rated the RPP in Cancun a 5 out of 5 last year. The RPRM has a lot of potential and we definitely enjoyed our trip overall. Pros: Check-in was quick and easy. Food overall was very good. We only at the buffet for dinner because the menu selections for the a la carte restaurants were not very appe... Read more

First of all let me say that this is a beautiful hotel it's a little dated like some say but not to much. We had our wedding on Friday may 20 on the beach and had our private reception in the Brazilian restaurant botafogo and everything was perfect. Big thumbs up to Veronica the wedding coordinator she did an excellent job getting everything together. So I took a solo vacation for my birthday. I wanted to spend a few days living in the lap of luxury, so I'm so glad I chose the Riu. The minute you drive up into their circular drive you are treated like royalty. The jr suite I got was spacious with a separate seating area and balcony. The pool was awesome. I was afraid that it would be overrun with kids because there are only two pools. But the pool is huge and there was space to spread out. The beach was BEAUTIFUL. The waiters will find you on... My wife and I have just returned from a relaxing two week holiday here. Just a couple of negatives, despite there being signs by the swimming pool saying reserving of sun loungers was not allowed this rule was not adhered to, most mornings after 1000 you would find it hard to get two loungers together that didn`t have towels or other stuff on them, normally there would be more towels than people. Check in was painless and quick ad we had a nice welcome cocktail. The layout of the hotel was great, the buffet and restaurants were all very close together which gave a nice atmosphere. We (wife and I) stayed for 7 days with 4 other adult family members and really couldn't have asked for a better stay. My wife and I have been to Mexico several times as well as other vacation destinations and I travel a lot for work so giving this a very fair review from a seasoned traveler. The hotel itself is very nice and has a very traditional Mexican feel and decor to it. Everything is kept very clean despite hundreds of people walking throughout the place. Travelled to many places and first of all I'd like to say the Mexican people who worked at this hotel are the nicest, most hard working and friendly people we've ever met. The only staff we came across who weren't very approachable/friendly we're a couple of them at reception and at the spa.. The beach is absolutely beautiful. The lobby in the hotel has a lovely atmosphere and the bar in there has some great cocktails. Housekeeping kept our rooms spotless clean every day. We thought the food... Read more

Just returned from Riu Palace Rivera Maya, this was our 6th stay at this resort and we still can't fault it, loved every minute of our stay. The food and drinks are superb and plentiful, the staff can't do enough for you, the rooms although very spacious, clean and well serviced, they are now starting to look a bit tired and are ready for a makeover. Although I stress they are still very good. This is the best Riu in playa car by far. Can't wait to return in November

Staff was very attentive and helpful. The resort was very nice, right on the beach and was situated only a short drive from town. Only criticism would be the gym. The treadmills and bike were a bit dated. They got the job done however.

The hotel is quite nice. The lobby is European in style and the desk staff is helpful, friendly and all smiles! We were greeted by Estaban for check in and then another time when our room key was locked in the room. Both times he seemed to be having the best day of his life. He was the happiest guy ever. Upgraded to here from the Riu Yuck a tan vastly superior but still needed the odd touches here and there to keep it to the 5 star. Lovely setting with crystal clear Sands. Rooms were classic in style but with lamp shades that didn't match and one that was ripped -see photos this was my only criticism of the hotel. Everything else was great. The stand of food was excellent with fillet steaks and a wonderful Brazilian. Would visit again tentative staff throughout.

My wife and I did our wedding at RIU Palace Riviera Maya and it really was pretty disappointing. The weather was poor and there is obviously nothing that the RIU could do about this but the backup plan left quite a bit to be desired. We were supposed to have a beach wedding but were moved to the theatre since a storm rolled ashore. This was unfortunate but we were looking to make the most of it. When I arrived at the theatre nothing was setup. I asked the wedding coordinator where the aisle... Read more

ok, where do we start...only one (very) small issue-the mosquitoes, i would suggest you take plentiful amounts of repellent!!!!!!! it certainly didn't make our holiday any more difficult but they can be wee blighters... nothing to do with the resort or the hotel, and this is for UK/Thomson travellers - trips are very expensive and not many of them, the main historical trips start at 5.30am and you endure a 2.5hr one way bus drive. there aren't very many family trips so i would ask around before... I stayed here for my birthday in October 2015. The hotel is more traditional in décor than the modern Riu hotels. The food was decent but not as good as other Riu properties that I have been to. The beach was beautiful and it was never hard to find a spot to relax. Our favorite spot was at the swim up bar. We brought our own Yetis from home and the staff was quick to make sure that they were always full. Tipping can go a long way. Our room was decorated each day and they went above and beyond...
