"absolutely fantastic hotel - we stayed in a huge family suite with 3 people and room for about 6 (probably 1200 square feet) - 2 bedrooms , 2 full baths , sitting room and kitchen with bar, fridge, microwave, stove. ground level - stunning view of pool gliding into ocean water - islands - magnificent. Service in rooms was outstanding from the minute we arrived.
Several pools with bars, great activity plans - fun instructors. wonderful buffets in multiple restaurants - enough varieties and changing daily specials - super juice selection - definitely try the dark green cactus juice -yummy!!!
Check-in service gave us 4 vouchers (instead of 2) for exclusive restaurant 'Don Quijote' -wonderful service and delicious food - totally unusual menu - smaller portions than expected - but you can always head to a buffet afterwards..
.Btw: we were the only Americans at the fully booked Barcelo during our stay - all other guests were Mexicans or Brasilians - mostly families - they warmly embraced us and made us feel as if we belong to their extended family. I don't speak much Spanish and had the greatest time communicating with many people, especially during cooking lessons and pool aerobics.
We just wish that the pools would stay open longer (they close at 6!!) and that teens (maybe 15 and up) would be allowed in the adult pool and would not have to go in the little kids pool or that the 3rd pool would be the 'teen' pool.
All in all the hotel and all the services and amenities offered were awesome! The activities offered around Ixtapa are endless - definitely have a massage for only$20 with the ladies next to the delphinarium - the best relaxation ever. The dolphin package was a little overpriced but still enjoyable. The parasail experience was exhilarating - be aware of price differences - The trip arranged by hotel amenities desk to snorkeling island on a sailboat was outstanding and not expensive (normally they want 5 pple minimum and they did it for the 3 of us). The boat crew was fantastic!!!!
BTW - we had stayed at Club med in Ixtapa before at more than twice the Barcelo price and not much more to offer for it but trapeze lessons

"We arrived on Sat. Nov. 26/11 to a packed hotel. Weekends are very busy with local Mexican people. We did upgrade through Book it to a Superior Ocean View - All Inclusive but that does not mean that you will recieve the terrace or balcony or that you will recieve your choice of beds that is advertized. We were assigned an end suite that had no balcony and only had a king sized bed, we would have prefered 2 double beds. After complaing on the phone and in person all they could do for us is have us change rooms the next day Sunday, when rooms became available at 2pm. That meant living directly out of our suitcases and being tied to the resort for a day waiting to change rooms. We went as a family of 9 people requiring 3 rooms. The others recieved 10th flr. rooms with balconies and beds to suit them, one family a group 4 (two kids) did not pay for an upgrade but recieved the upgrade freebie. I requested some sort of compensation for our inconvenience but none was forthcoming.
We went the next day at 2pm and were assigned a new room, we go to this room put the key card in the slot door opens 'Ta Da', this room was occupied how embarrassing was this with a woman standing right there. Back to the front desk assigned a third room back on the original 7flr. this room was as advertized but came with an interesting flaw. Whenever somebody above had a shower there was a leak in our bathroom directly above the toilet, I complained twice to the front desk and twice to our maid to no avail. Avoid room 724 !
Other than the first 24 hours it was a good holiday, the hotel on a whole was good other than our checkin experience and subsequent relations with front desk people. Special mention to and accolades to West Jet and Bookit in hooking us up with city tour guide and fishing guide and crew of the fishing boat Duquesa II.
