Vanessa from Virginia Beach, VA had this to say:
"We were originally booked at Gran Bahia Tulum. When we arrived, the manager told us that they were overbooked. He offered us an upgrade to a jr. suite at Akumal with immediate occupancy. We were grateful and tipped him $20. Six hours later, we checked into our 'upgraded' room. This room was very dated and was 20 minutes from the pool. It was obviously very rarely chosen and cleaned because the television would not work, they were empty water bottles on the cornice, and it was so far out, we needed to book a flight to the beach. We later found out that every room is a suite, and Tulum was recently upgraded and hot in demand. The manager at Akumal moved us closer to the pool. The biggest disappointment was not being in a new facility with a larger pool, more things to do, and a better gym. We have stayed in Gran Bahia three times prior to this trip (Jamaica twice and Dominican Republic once), and we always loved our experiences. This time we invited another couple to go with us. We did not have the beautiful room, easy access, or great entertainment that we were accustomed to with Gran Bahia. 'On the other hand, the food was fabulous, trams were fast, and the staff was amazing. What the rooms lack at the complex is made up with the wonderful people that work at this resort. The snorkeling is wonderful. We have done several snorkeling excursions on our previous trips to Mexico, and this experience was the best . . . and free. Don't miss this part of your trip. Bring your own gear. They don't give out gear on 'red flag' days, and everyday was a 'red flag' day during our 8 days. Don't bother with fins, you won't need them. 'You are never without food or drink at this resort. The buffet was wonderful, and our favorite restaurant was 'Tequila.' 'If you are looking for a more quiet resort, this is it. Request a room closer to the beach and pool, because the ones on the outside of the loop are quite a haul. Also if you are looking at Coba, it is even further from the ocean. "

Shawn W from Danville, VA had this to say:
"This hotel is first off very big. When I say 'big', there are 3 resorts in one. Bahia Prinipe Akumal, Coba, and Tulum. We were located at the Akumal resort, which is centrally located between both Coba and Tulum. I liked the fact that we were in the center of the resort, but the pool at our resort and beach was overcrowded in my opinion unless you are a early riser and want to put a towel out on a chair that could be easily removed or taken if you are not there. Not that it would happen, but could. We found that Tulum had the most vacancy for chairs at the pools and we ended up there more often. Just so you know, it's a long walk between resorts so hitching a ride on a trolly or a train like golf cart is the way to go. They go between lobbys. Both Akumal and tulum have nice pools, They are sectioned off in different areas. I found Akumal's pools to be less oval and more like lap pools. However, they were nice they do have two areas that are oval but not huge.Tulum pools were more oval and large. They also have a entertainment staff at the Tulum pool who were always keeping things interesting. For instance, volleyball, table tennis, water polo, pool exercises with a swim up bar. I did not go to the coba pool so sorry I cant expand on that one. All the lobbys were nice. Night time entertainment was exceptional but they blare the music don't sit up front! There are 3 buffet restaurants and the rest require reservation. For a week you can only make reservations at three of them and only for dinner, which i thought sucked. They were ok. We found the Japanese Restaurant to be the best. Just depends on what you like. After a while everything to me was similar even at the a la carte. We began craving American food after several days. The food was good though plenty to eat so don't worry about it. Don't count on great service at the buffet restaurants. We sat for 10-15 minutes sometimes before getting a refill on coffee or a drink, but if you tell them they are good about getting it. I just didn't feel that I should have to go look for my waiter everytime I wanted a drink. A la carte was good service. Just like anywhere some better than others. Don't get excited about a beach. they have birms set up to protect the beach from strong waves in areas and people get on them and challenge the waves which is fun, but don't expect a great swimming beach. It aint happening. However they do have a cove area that is protected at Akumal that is ok for children and adults. The waves and wind were pretty rough when we were there in Late April. Rooms everywhere. I mean everywhere. It's like a mini city. This hotel has its own shopping area that is at the entrance. Lots of shops with all kinds of souvenirs. Also has a night club there that we did not go to and a sports bar. Front desk staff were not in my opinion friendly. Other resort staff were good for the most part. Don't lose your pool cards there $50 a piece. Rooms are cleaned daily but if they sweep the floor, I would be shocked. We walked around in our room with sand and whatever else dropped on the floor all week. There are bars at all the restaurants that have Karaoke type singers at night. It's ok, but more geared for the older crowd. Overall, I would rate this place as a 7 or 8 but not my personal favorite. Trips are what you make of them and the everyone is different. I don't think you will be disappointed with this hotel. If you like to drink, who cares! I am not a big drinker so I have to rely on my soberness! ha ha..."
