Cancun’s Restored Beaches: The beaches are back. The welcoming white-sand beaches are returning as a result of a $90 million government project to restore one of the main lures of the popular tourist destination. Mexico started replenishing the beaches at Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Cozumel on the Caribbean Sea in October, pumping 5 million cubic meters of sand from boats onto the shore. The beaches had been restored after Hurricane Wilma in 2005, but had since been washed away, leaving little to no sand in some areas that had once had wide, luxurious beaches.
