"My husband and I just returned from a week at the Riu Las Americas. We had a wonderful time. The hotel is beautiful. The pool , beach and grounds are beautiful.
You can sunbathe, snorkel on site or hang at the beach or pool. If you want to relax there is a quiet pool area . If you want to have fun and participate in pool games and activities , ou can party at the other pool with games and contests. The Riu has a great entertainment staff who work very hard from the daytime into the night to see that all the patrons have a good time! There is a hotel show each evening offering a new theme nightly. The shows are amazing! And if you have any stamina left, the entertainment group will accompany you to the local hot clubs. The food and restaurants are excellent. ( Especially the evening steakhouse and mexican rest)
There is food day and night and you wont be disappointed. There are selections of just about anything you could possibly want especially at breakfast and lunch.Dont listen to any negative reviews. We had an awesome time and never left the hotel. If you cant have a good time at the Riu Las Americas have someone check your pulse to see if you are still breathing! LOL Will definitely be returning to this great hotel!"

"So there are a lot of reviews here and on TripAdvisor and other travel sites. I did a lot of research when a few friends booked their stay here and asked us to join. Most everything I read was great and I think they were spot on. The staff was the nicest I've ever seen. Anything you want, they'll get it. Any special requests, they'll do it. When one couple wanted to surprise another couple in our group, they went down to reception just before dinner and asked if they could just throw a note on the bed they wrote and make a towel animal for them. The staff did a few towel decorations, some rose petals, and balloons on the door! Above and beyond!
Same for the wait staff. There was NO PLACE we could go and not get drinks. The beach, the pools, the sitting areas. They were all over the place. Any drink you want, they'd make. As for the light pours and bottom shelf booze, just ask for what you want and they'll do it. And don't be cheap. This is Mexico and even though this is an all-inclusive resort, these people rely on tips! I tipped $20 American the first day for the maid and my in-room bar was stocked three times a day with exactly what we asked for. If we went out for an hour and wanted out room made up then, it was made up before we got back! Same for the bar tenders. They work the same areas. A $20 tip the first night at the Terrace Bar and our bar tenders, Ernesto, would make sure our drinks were filled before anyone else! And just ask for Absolute of you don't want well vodka. Same for tequila. It's Mexico, they have good tequila if you want it. They use the well booze for the crazy drunk college kids!
The rooms were awesome! All tile and marble. I don't understand the idiots on here that say the rooms are dated. They aren't. They are styled in a Mediterranean/Spanish influence architecture and are very nice. All flat screen TV's in the living room and sitting room (We had a Senior Suite), and every toom as an ocean view. We were on the inside corner and I liked that more. Our friends were on the end of one of the wings and all they saw was the ocean. We had a prefect view of the main pool, all the grounds, and the beach and ocean. They did have the advantage of seeing the sun rise and set while our view was blocked by the two hotel wings but it wasn't a big deal. Also, remember the floors are going to be slippery. It's all sealed tile (made in Mexico), the humidity is 80% almost 24x7, and there are pools and a HUGE ocean right there!! The staff are ALWAYS walking around with toweled mops to make sure the floors are dry but you still need to be careful. And yes, there is a mild mildew smell in the rooms and hallways but it is NOT strong or overpowering. And you should expect it with the humidity and ocean right there. The water in the rooms and hotel on the other hand were tough! They had that strong sulfur smell to it but some people are used to it. Don't drink the water even though some people say it didn't affect them. You're going to be drinking enough of it in your drinks (the ice) but you don't smell it there. The water at the bars and the restaurants is OK to drink. The fill the pitchers from 5 gallon filtered water jugs.
My only complaint during the entire time was the food. It was not good. Breakfast in the buffet was the best meal of the day and I could have done with that for every meal if they could have. The lunch buffets were OK too. A few cook outs and your typical lunch fare. STAY AWAY from the Italian restaurant. It was the worst food I've ever had. We ate there when we got there for lunch before checking in and the pizza was worse than cardboard and ketchup. It was worse than the worse frozen pizza I've ever had. Now we're from NY (Upstate) and we think our pizza is the best in the world so I am a little biased but this was BAD. The one night we all ate there for dinner I played it safe and ordered the grilled chicken stuffed with peppers and provolone. I don't know what they served but the three of us who ordered it took one bite and spit it out. It was rubbery, white, no grill marks, and disgusting. The only good experience we had with food was at the Japanese restaurant. It was OK for Mexican/Japanese food. Seriously people, the food sucked. But the nice thing is, you can go next door to the Riu Cancun and eat there! While the hotel its self is a lower rating than the Hotel Riu Palace Las Americas, the food is 10x better. The buffet was amazing there and about 3x's the size of the one in our hotel. I don't know why this is the case but I did hear that the new Riu Peninsula that opened late last year took all the good cooks from the Palace. That could explain why the food was so bad.
Overall, this was an amazing place. The staff, the accommodations, the beach, which was very well kept contrary to a few postings here, were all exceptional. I took points off Value and Quality just because of the food. If you're going to be an All-Inclusive resort and a 4 or 5 star one at that, all things need to click and the food was a detractor. Would we go again? Sure! But we'd eat next door next time!"

"Just returned from trip to RIU with a large group. Cleanliness of room was great, though the beds are very very hard and so not so comfy. The decor and linens are a bit outdated if that bothers you. The pools are pretty nice with one being in full sunlight and the other absolutely no sun. The cove was a pleasant beach, though not a ton of space as you might get along the east side of the hotel zone. It was over the New Years holiday so it was very crowded so beach space can be limited at that time. The eating options were plentiful with breakfast as my favorite. My friends and I experienced some stomach issues. We think due to our system not acclimating to their food, though this never occurred to the group in prior trip to Cancun at a different resort. I will say that the RIU Peninsula, new property was much nicer when we visited. Would I return? Maybe. Just so you know, it is not a Marriott but nice enough for a stay for 5 days."

"Just returned from this property, and loved every minute of it. The property is immaculate and the staff are extremely accomodating and friendly. Anything you need or want they will get. There is a musty smell at times in the hallways, but it is due to the climate/weather of Mexico. Also, there was a foul odor that the breeze drifted over from the sewage area of the property that I'm unaware the cause. But, never let that foul our stay...no biggie!
We were able to sample every restaurant while we were there. The mexican was my least favorite, with the Krystal a close second. The Japanese was the best in my opinion. The buffet was always available and we were always able to find food to eat there.
Pool side waiters were excellent, never got thirsty...though I believe they really water down the alcohol. We went to a couple of the nightly shows, which was a lot of fun.
Overall, I give this a thumbs up for the price!"

"The only two negatives were the beds (very uncomfortable) and Depending on where you are on the beach or at the pool, you will have to move to get any rays. As the day progresses and how the hotel is positioned, it blocks the sun. Aside from that, the staff was very friendly and accommodating, food was always available with a wide variety and very good! The hotel itself is beautiful!

Small beach but plenty to walk. some members of the animation tean seemed burned out ( no connection with people. Felt like 'Just a job attitude' ) Great fun with the Safiros ! all shows were great !"

"Very nice hotel but not 4 stars or 5 that Riu claims.
The alacarte restauarants are very poor. Only the Mexican served a half decent steak, yes the Mexican. The steak house is dismall and the French gets the cake for absolutely dreadful. This leaves the buffet which is 3.5 star at best with no theme nights. So you better like it as never changes including lunch time. They need a new dessert chef as well as the quality is poor and the offerings never change.
Lots of drinking and partying and noise at the pool. Great if you are going to get hammered and don't care about resting or the food.
The spa and gym are not even three stars, don't even think about these.
We were suppose to stay 12 nights, tried to switch to another hotel day 5 and were not successful until day 10. We went to the Grand Melia for a small amount more. Both are rated 4 stars. This rating is clearly useless as the Grand Melia was much, much better. The difference in hotel, room, and food were worth paying double but the difference was about $50 night. The buffet is to die for as there is fresh seafood and variety of meats cooked for you on the spot. Breakfast and lunch are all top quality. This is a great hotel with class.
That was our second stay at a Riu Palace and they will never see us again."

"This has to be one of the best vacations I have ever had. My brother, sister and I and our families travel on vacation each summer. This is our first time to Cancun and it was like vacationing in paradise. The hotel was beautiful, exceptionally clean, and the staff and management were outstanding. I was pampered from the time I arrived until the time I left. The staff was very accommodating, the food was fabulous and everyone was friendly and more than willing to assist your every need. I am already looking forward to returning next year on vacation with even more friends and family. This was definitely an enjoyable, relaxing vacation that was well worth the price. Thank you to the staff and management at Hotel Riu Palace Las Americas. You made my vacation wonderful. "

"Usually, we spend our vacation time in Europe, on Adriatic Sea in Croatia; this year we decided to go to Mexico-Cancun for the first time; we stayed at this property for 7 nights and WOW, definitely exceeded our expectations in every possible way! From the moment we pulled up we were amazed with the degree of service and pampering the resort provides.receptionist did great job greeting us and making sure our check in was smooth; she immediately ordered welcoming drinks for us, very refreshing after a long trip Our suite (427) was spacious, well maintained clean and comfortable, in living room we had sleeping sofa for our daughter (as per our request), mini bar and refrigerator with bottled drinks and water was stocked daily and spectacular ocean view!!! Beach is clean and safe; we enjoyed every moment swimming in the ocean, tanning on the sun and sipping cocktails. We also enjoyed the pool; special thanks to the entertainment team!!! Great job guys!!! Beside all day buffet, there were 5 specialty restaurants with so many options; The French restaurant was fantastic. On my birthday we had dinner there; chef made amazing dishes, the filet was extremely tender and probably best tasting I have ever had! Team of servers did superb job they and receptionists helped my husband organize birthday surprise for me; I was astonished!!!! When we came back to our room after the dinner and wonderful time in the Krystal Restaurant we find our room nicely decorated by housekeeping with flowers, rose petals on the bed and they also made birthday day cake and swans with the towels so beautifully, with so much attention to every detail just amazing. Overall, quality of food and drinks was exceptional in every restaurant; service was excellent; entire staff has always been extremely helpful and made us feel like Royalty!!! Weve been telling all of our friends to go to here and for sure we are planning on going back again. Renova Spa; my daughter had aromatherapy massage and she loved it! I had body wrapping, which was not to the level of my expectations, maybe because I have spa treatments here in USA on regular bases and I expected much more especially since pricing in Renova is much higher than here anyhow, I made sure Spa manager is aware of it and she offered complimentary 30 minutes neck and shoulder massage to me; I decided to add some money and go for 50 minutes aromatherapy which my daughter had and I had it outside by the ocean this was delightful experience and I would definitely recommend! Finally; I would like to kindly appeal on all travelers to all inclusive resorts; please bring single dollars or pesos for tipping. It's all inclusive and not expected but these people work very hard on 85-90 degree weather with a big smile on their face. We noticed them all work long shifts... In conversation with one of the shuttle drivers we found out that these hard working people are paid $6-$7 PER DAY!!! Giving them $1 per order is so appreciated.... We brought with us about $100 in single dollar bills for tips. Unfortunately, we didn't see many people tipping, however they all still received excellent service regardless but, it just doesn't feel right not to tip for their efforts. We cant wait to go back!!!"

"Pros: Nice resort, Very friendly staff. Has an ATM right in the Hotel. The room was nice, liquor dispensers. Beautiful view of the ocean. Nice beach. Has a few rocks but overall wonderful. Food was above average for All Inclusive hotel. Dessert in the French restaurant was to die for. Service was great. Every one of the staff greet you. There is another hotel right next door to play at. Cons: Beds were a little hard. Had to make reservations for the restaurants sometimes 3 days in advance. Had to go to WalMart to buy cream for the coffee. They only use some form of milk at the resort. They wouldn't exchange American money. ( although they would exchange Canadian, English, German, Euros) You can go to a bank across the street to exchange money if you have your'e passport. They speak absolutely no English. The nice pool beds were almost impossible to get because people would come down early in the morning and put their towels on the beds and would be gone for hours."

"We had stayed here about 5 yrs. ago and it was fabulous! That is why I booked our vacation of 112 people to the same place this time arouond but it was a real dissappointment to find our room was warm.....we were told they were having a problem with the air conditioning on that side of the building, could not get any cooler of course we could switch our room the next day but we were already into ouor 2nd day of a 5 day stay and completely unpacked. The toilets did not flush in the entire hotel our first day .....they had a problem with water pressure. Really....disgusting! Two of the people we were with saw roachs....one in there room.....the other are you ready......on the sugar rim of her martini!!! This all was bad enough but the entire hotel smelled of mildew, so much so that after getting home I had to was everything I could to get rid of the odor and the suitcases had to be left outside to try to get rid of the smell. It was rreally a shame because the hotel 'looks' beautiful and the waiters are gracious but I would stay away."

"Disregard any of the negative reviews online - this place was awesome! The staff was extremely amusing with all the events they conducted onsite - from the water ballon fight in the pool to the Michael Jackson evening entertainment. Drinks were constantly coming, either at the pool bar or inside. Massages by the ocean were fantastic. Got a chance to eat at the Mexican, Brazilian, and Japanese restaurants - all awesome. And the place drew the perfect match of young and old patrons (we'd fall in the middle)."

"Beautiful hotel. Beautiful views! We were well cared for. Overall, we didn't feel it was too safe to venture too far away from the resort with all the stories you hear about crime and the drug cartels in Mexico. I have read this violence doesn't apply to Cancun, but who wants to take the chance? Room was spacious, clean and had a balcony overlooking the pool and the ocean. If you go, make sure you make reservations at one of the specialty restaurants a night ahead as they fill up. We were never able to get in. Buffet was ok. I was not overly impressed with the food."

"This is a stunning property. It was immaculate and clean. The staff were very friendly and helpful. They even let us check in three hours early which was well needed after 10 hours of flying. Throughout our trip we treated very well by the staff. However, the selection of food was poor. It was the same thing day after day. On the third day I got food poisoning. I'd rather go to a different hotel will not return to Riu for a while."

"My husband and I jrst returned on Sat. March 3rd. For all the people that wrote negative reviews you are probably people who could find fault with anywhere they went. This place is a paradise! From check in to check out we had no problems what so ever. The staff was fantastic. The food was fabulous. Yes there was a slight mildewy smell but we have been to Dominican Republic at a 5 star and to Jamica and both places did have that odor. I think it just has something to do with the high humidty year round. From the servers on the beach to the maids to the bar staff everyone was friendly and more than willing to get you anything you needed. We are returning next year and absolutely can't wait. Don't listen to the other reviews. Just make your reservation and get ready for a fabulous week in paradise."

"Overall, the resort was well worth the money. We had an Ocean View Jr. Suite on the 8th floor (center). The view was amazing! The hotel is in a great area if planing a trip to the night clubs. (7 minute walk). The staff was very friendly and willing to accommodate any request. The rooms were very spacious and exceeded our expectations. The in-room bar and fridge were HUGE bonuses. Any room service request was very speedy. The 'broadway show' was a bit cheezy. The hotel did have a slight musty smell but nothing worth complaining about. Had I not of read other reviews prior to our vacation, I might not have even noticed. As the hotel is ocean-side the dampness was to be expected. The buffet next door was by far much better than the buffet here, which was quite surprising. Since they were both included, we did not mind walking over. Next door, however, was very congested and hosted a much younger crowd (30 somethings) which was our age group, however, we we looking for a more relaxed crowd, so we were happy with our selection to stay here. We were not thrilled with having to make reservations a day or two in advance to go to the specialty restaraunts especially since we were very disappointed with the food. We ate at Crystal, which seems to be most recommended, however, was not blown away. If you are looking for 5 star food, this is not the resort for you. The food was most disappointing. The drinks were just ok...but unlimited :) .. so after a few, the taste did not matter much. The gym was aweful...if you are a gym rat, pick another resort. The beach was small, but totally sufficient. If you are going to book an excursion, walk across the street to the local excursion desk....it is much less expensive. If you are looking to dance, do not waste your time at COCO BONGO...it was a bust! They cram people in like sardines. We had a better time at Congo and Dos Equies which were way less expensive. Over all considering what we paid , I would give this resort an 8 out of 10."

"Our second trip to Riu Palace Las Americas in Cancun. We feel this is paradise and came back for 2 weeks this time. Brought friends with us who plan to return next year with us. You definitely get your money worth with this all-inclusive."

"We feel the need to share our less than pleasant experience at that hotel.
We pain a good amount of money to make sure that we had an 'Ocean View Suite', and when we arrived there, they informed us that they had NO SUITES available, and after going back and forth with a few of the front desk managers/and over an hour later, they put the 3 of us in a SMALL room, with the promise that we were going to be moved into the type of room that we had paid for. Well, the next day, we had to stay close to the hotel-so they we can frequently check for availability of the suite-once available, we had to pack everything that we had unpacked already and move to a suite with 'Partial Ocean View'!!!!! that's the 'best they could do' ... We found the front desk staff to be less than helpful and polite (with the exception of one employee) but for the most part, very very very poorly customer service oriented.
The quality of food was OK, but the service at the restaurant was very good. All in all, we would NOT recommend that hotel to anyone, for we feel it was NOT worth the money."

"This was a return visit for my wife and I. We had been at this resort back in April of 2011 and were so impressed by everything from the resort itself, to the staff and the various restaurants, including a Brazilian steakhouse that we had really enjoyed, that we decided to return. While the resort was as beautiful as ever and the staff as friendly and helpful as ever, the food left alot to be desired this time around. The Brazilian steakhouse was gone, replaced by what we assumed was supposed to be a new and improved steakhouse. I'm sorry to say this but it was awful. We ate there for our anniversary and ordered the steak and lobster. The steak I ordered (medium rare) was rubbery and chewy while the lobster couldn't be extracted from the shell without a pickaxe. We later asked one of the staff why the management had decided to get rid of the Brazilian steakhouse and were told that people had complained that it was too much meat!! Really??? I have never heard ANYONE complain that they were getting too much for their money so this was apparently what resort management had told the staff to tell people if anyone asked. To make a long story short, by the end of the trip, the only place we really felt comfortable eating was the buffet restaurant. Another problem, depending on the bartender on duty, was that the drinks seemed to have little or no liquor in them and alot of the time, it wasn't premium liquor being used. At one point, my wife ordered a martini and said that it tasted like it was made with 'moonshine' rather than premium vodka. Another issue we had was the person or persons cleaning our room. The day we arrived, we were told that they had a room ready for us. Upon reaching the room, we checked the fridge only to find five partially used bottles of soda and NO water. This may seem like a minor point however, bottled water is still a necessity in Mexico. The next day we returned to the room from the pool and found a partially consumed bottle of water in the bedroom area. Unfortunately, it appeared this belonged to the cleaning staff that had been in the room, since it was not the same water given to the resort guests. Bottom line....we probably will not return for a third visit."

"The most wonderful vacation ever. They waited on us hand and foot. The food was excellent and the service was wonderful. I loved every minute of it and cannot wait to go back next year. Well worth your money. Actually cheaper than spending a week in Florida. Beautiful hotel, very clean. I just wish I could have stayed 2 weeks instead of 1. Very relaxing."

"This place really rocks! Impeccable service, fantastic food and lots of choices of restaurants -- the water was sparkling turquoise and the beach fantastic. I had a massage at the spa and it was fantastic. We worked at out the gym every day and it was clean and all of the equipment worked very well. We could also go next door to the Riu and check out the beach and shows. Great Operation! We will visit the Riu Palace Hotels again in the future."

"We just returned from 8 days at the Riu Palace, overall it was a great trip. The hotel is beautiful, the service wonderful and staff extremely willing to accommodate in anyway possible. If I were looking for something to complain about, it would that the hotel needs little maintenance items taking care off (paint touched up, etc) and the coffee is very bad. I did try to add an expresso to my regular coffee to make it better, but ended up going to the Starbucks across the street.
Although tips are not required, we found that they really deserved more tips and we tipped those we thought earned the extra. Also, if you are looking for something special food wise etc, a nice tip goes a long way... We are looking forward to going back."

"Hotel is beautiful. Room is nice with a little sitting area. We were upgraded to a pool/ocean view which was nice on the 3rd floor. I am sure the room views on higher floors are much more gorgeous but we were happy with our upgrade. The food is good. Restaurants were good also. We are not picky eaters so all food was fine for us. The pool was great (one of the bartenders at swim up a little snappy; probably should be moved to a less active area like the lobby or something - I'm 40 so trust me this has nothing to do with age). We enjoyed the beach and also pool. Meet a lot of people from everywhere and really enjoyed ourselves. This is a quiet hotel I thought so if you are looking to relax this is a place for you. Pool area during day is probably the most excitement you see at this hotel. Drinks were great and many top shelf options - Baileys, Absolute, etc. For the money it was worth it for us!"

"My partner and I stayed for 8 days - could have stayed for 800! The resort was amazing and truly made my holiday.
We loved the pool service and the quality of the staff. The rooms were huge and we certainly got our money's worth in food and beverage. Already trying to figure out a way to go back again next year!"

"My Summer Vacation to Cancun was very refreshing and badly needed. My partner and I were very impressed with the service, activities, food and the spacious room; as soon as we arrived we were upgraded to the beach/pool view and it was just an amazing view.
The only distasteful thing was a few female members going top less, there were children in the beach and these females were walking around as if it was ok, I think there are beaches that you can go to and are ok with nudity, but I did not think Riu was one of them. This is the only complaint I have.

"The hotel stay at the Riu Palace Las Americas was great. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. My only downfall was the food selection and how reservations to the restuarants within the hotel were handled poorly and could have been better."

"Always check reviews before going any place as per they definitely help. When reading reviews on the Riu Palace in Cancun 100% commented on the hotel's bad smell. IT IS TRUE and only because of this factor I would not recommend this hotel to my friends. Now if you are able to get a great deal (use BOOK IT, so far I found they have great deals and good service) for a bit less than a $1,000 FOR 2 for 6 nights THEN definitely go and it would be easier to ignore the smell and concentrate on the good things the hotel got to offer like their service, food, entertainment & overall beauty of its location. Trust me if you can't get this type of deal then you better of trying some place else other than Riu Palace Palace. However all in all WE HAD A WONDERFUL time in beautiful CANCUN. "
