"This was our third time at the Riu Cancun Resort.
For the money, the resort was great.
You can spend more money to get a better resort, but this is a great resort to go to without breaking the bank.
The food was great, the staff was always friendly, and the place was always being cleaned so what else could a person ask for?"

"The Riu Cancun was perfect for us traveling with two senior girls for spring break. Hotel is very clean and the staff was friendly. It was in a great location! Close and in walking distance to shopping, clubs, and restaurants. It was a great party hotel for all ages. The only downfall was that we couldn't get reservations for the other restaurants within the hotel, because they were always booked. The food in the buffet was amazing though! You could always find something different to eat everyday. I will definately go back to the Riu Cancun!"

"Where to begin?! The Riu Cancun is far better than a 3 star resort! My husband and I have been to Cancun 3 times now in the past 15 moths, and this was our first time staying at a Riu resort. We travel often, and have stayed at many all-inclusive resorts, including two 5 stars. We have nothing but praise for Riu Cancun, and can't wait to go back! The entire resort is very well maintained, and the star is eager to serve your every need! Check-in and check-out room less than 10 minutes, and was very easy.
We stayed in a junior suite, and ha gorgeous views from our balcony! Our AC worked amazingly well. The water pressure is outstanding here.... The best we've ever had at a hotel, and there is no shortage of hot water! Our room was huge with lots of closet space and hangers. The liquor I dispenser and fridge are completely stocked with all your needs, and are re-stocked every-other day. (Which is plenty often!) The 'king bed' is probably our only room complaint as it is two double beds pushed together, which was awkward. But we made it work!
The food and bars are great! We are at both the main buffet and mission buffet (pool & ocean side). I'm a picky eater, but had no problems finding great food! They have something for everyone's cravings! The crepes on Thursday night were amazingly delicious... My husband and I both had seconds on these treats! We did eat at two of the speciality restaurants... The Japanese one was great food and service. My husband doesn't care for sushi and such, but liked what he ordered. It was a nice, romantic setting. We ate at the Brazilian restaurant with another couple we met on the trip. This was an interesting experience as its a sampling type dinner. The food was good, but wasn't my all-time favorite. My one complaint is how hard it is to get into the restaurants. We would go down around 10:30 each morning, and they were already booked full... But then when we did get in there were so many empty tables?! Didn't make sense to us, but oh we'll, the buffet was plenty good!
The bars serve great drinks, and its fun to sample new things as the bartenders are very knowledgeable! Great shots, too! :) The night club is a fun place to hang out, listen to music, drink and meet other people. It's nothing fancy, but works for the nights you don't want to leave the resort (and pay $40-100 pp for clubs)! The resort shows were very entertaining. You need to get there early for a good seat! They have something for everyone! Mayan show was very cool!
We used the spa for 80 minute massages. Mexican therapist pay so much more attention to detail than back here in the US. We're members of Massage Envy, and neither my husband or I have had a massage that can compare to the ones we've gotten in Mexico. The prices were a little high though... I would suggest going across the street from Riu Palace Americanas to Bamboo Salon & Spa, which we also did later in the trip. They are much more reasonable, and both of us agree this was the best massage ever.... And it's clean, modern, and comfortable.
The beach and pools were both great! The waves aren't too crazy here so you can actually enjoy swimming, and we saw kids playing around the beach. Chairs were harder to find by the pool after 10 am, but we prefer the beach, and never had a problem. There all sorts of activities you can participate in for all ages! We had no issues of getting sun like some people said. Who needs sun after 4:30 anyways?
All in all, Riu Cancun is an amazing resort that deserves at least 4.5 stars! If you can't have a good time here then it's your own fault! This resort has it all, and seems to be a great place for all ages! It's the perfect balance of relaxation and fun! We will definitely be going back!"

"Not enough words to tell everything BAD!!! Have stayed 3 time at Riu Cabo San Lucas and Riu Cancun doesn't even come close to Cabo!!! Checked-in and was offered upgrade room...LOL...didn't realize we had to stand on chairs to see the ocean as the balcony was walled in over my head!!! AND it was the only room where balcony not painted and repaired. While the room was very clean, it too had not been repaired. We figured the clerk thought the 'old folks' wouldn't care. Got seated in Brazilian restaurant...couldn't cut beef with a machete...chicken raw in middle...Turkey so dried out that you could not chew through it...Had long hair in the broccoli!!!! Got up and left and lo and behold got food poisoning BAD. Sick for 2 days!!!! They never replenished fridge and liquor cabinet. The TOPPER IS: My husband has very thin skin and during sleep hit his wrist on the headboard and apparently just put his arm back under pillow as usual. In the AM I saw a circle of blood under pillow so left sheet pulled down so maid would see. She reported us to security and we were summoned to explain!!!!! Good Grief..we are 70 and she thought one of us killed the other...LOL LOL LOL. Going back to Cabo San Lucas. Buenos Tardes Amigos."

"We just spent 3 Wonderful days at Riu Cancun and loved it!! This is our second time. the staff was great, everything was clean. I was worried about staying here because 3 yrs ago we stayed here and had a great experience and after reading the reviews we didnt want to be let down, and we weren't. The staff greeted us, I didn't like our room so I asked for a different room and within 10 minutes we had a great room! and drinking a cold beer! Yes, the beds were hard but we have found this at all the Riu hotels that we have stayed in several countries. But clean, the food was good and the drinks were excellent. The staff was always cleaning and repairing. The hotel was full, but never out of control. The only thing that was missing was the vendors at night and some entertainment between at dinner time and I saw a cut back on activies around the pool area, but were for some romance and peace and quiet. I would return and take friends with us."

"First of all, let me say that I obsessed over which all-inclusive to stay at. I was looking for a hotel that had a good value, a calm beach, and good food.
I ultimately decided on Riu Cancun because it was at the top of the peninsula, and therefore was to have calmer water. I also liked that just about every room had an ocean view, and I liked that it's score was a 4/5. After obsessing for weeks, I just took the plunge and charged my card to stay there for a week.
I can say that this hotel is a great decision. Some people complained about: damp bedsheets, slick floors, small, shady beach, and bland food. So, I'll address each concern.
The bedsheets were not damp in my opinion, nor was the bed too hard. I have heard that you can request a foam bed cover if you need one, but I didn't. The floors did tend to get a little slick, and I think this was from the air-conditioning.
The beach does get shady after around 3:30pm, but there are still certain spots that have some sun. My biggest gripe in this regard was that the beach is pretty small, and wavy. But - it's not a big issue, we just walked a few hotels down where the beach was calm and beautiful. Really not a big issue, unless you have trouble walking.
The food was hit or miss. Once you know what to look for, it's great. The guacamole, for example - Amazing. The grilled fish - awesome. The fruits and vegatables - awesome. The deserts? Not very good. Stick to ice cream and some cakes. Steer clear of the desserts that look fancy - they're usually bad. The restaurants, which must be booked 2 days in advance, are either good or pretty bad. Japanese one is good, but the Brazilian is really bad. Not authentic at all. I didn't bother to visit the steakhouse, because Mexico is not known for it's meat. Stick to the buffet which is perfect - and eat at the Japanese once or twice, as it's pretty good. (But don't expect sashimi or anything - the sushi is just cooked)
The staff is very friendly. There might be a couple rotten eggs in the bunch, but overall they are great. The drinks are great, and I was also a sucker for the nachos.
Also - bring some $1 bills to tip your waiters and cleaning lady, etc. They deserve it. They are so friendly and attentive.
Also - last point - don't buy any excursions at the hotel (or on this site, other than the shuttle) - go to the mall or visit the sidewalk area across the street, MUCH better deals."

"I have been to Cancun 17 times in the last 15 years and this hotel was definitely in the top 3! The food was excellent, hotel and room was spotless and beautiful and the staff really took care of you. My only complaint would be while they provided hand sanitizers in the buffet restaurant, I believe it should be stationed at the entrance and every patron should be encouraged to use it before entering. Everyone is using the same serving spoons to pile their plates and I don't believe everyone is taking the time to wash their hands first."

"I am not one to complain, really, but this experience was very disappointing! This was my fifth time at a Riu, I was always a Riu fan; however, after this experience I will never return to a Riu hotel. For starters, I would have been able to let go of the fact that the hotel is run-down, not clean, that the beds are extremely hard, and that the food was at best, marginal, but the employees were awful. Sure, you had the handful of employees who were friendly, but for the most part, they had a negative attitude, were rude, and did not care to fix any issues if they arised. I understand that this Riu is more economical than other hotels; however, I never knew that cheaper meant that we would be treated like second-class citizens. Do yourself a favor and spend a little more elsewhere to get yourself a relaxing vacation. For us, it was a real waste of money and time. Hope you find this helpful..."

"I guess because I went during memorial day weekend the experience was different from others but the staff was very rude, inconvinced me most of my trip. At first I got the wrong room assigned to me and had to stay there one day due to capacity the next room I got had a leaking air conditioner. Although I can say house keeping was very attentive came often to check up on us . The buffet was good and had a good selection as well as the japanese resturant loved them. Other then the food the staff seemed annoyed and bothered by request. I would NEVER stay at this hotel again during this kind of holiday it was by far my worst travel experience!!"

"This hotel is great; mainly thanks to the wonderful staff. There is plenty to do to keep occupied if you wish to partake - they don't badger you if you'd prefer to just relax. Food is terrific - great variety in the Don Juan, the special event feel of the Japanese restaurant and the wonderful selection of well prepared fare at the Brazilian restaurant. Room was kept well stocked in everything and kept very clean by an unobtrusive housekeeping team. Beach was great, view from room amazing. Reception staff are really attentive and helpful. Quality of drinks offered and friendly willing staff to provide them all add to the wonderful experience. I couldn't ask for better"

"Really enjoyed our stay! Lovely resort. Friendly staff. We arrived before check-in time but simply asked and they had our room ready to enter. Wherever we sat down (including on the beach) we were served drinks. Never went hungry. A wide variety of choices at the buffets. As other reviewers have stated, reserve your spot at the specialty restaurants as soon as you arrive - for us on a Wed, they were technically booking for Fri, although they did squeeze us in for that night. If you're a beer drinker, expect to stick to Dos Equis, but with all the other mixed drink options neither myself or my boyfriend had a problem with that! Without paying extra, you'll get a view of the ocean from your room. Stayed in April and the weather was perfect! No rain. Didn't do any excursions this time, but would in the future as I heard they were nice and affordable. Kayaks are included with just a $6 fee. Plenty more nice things to say, overall enjoyed our time and would recommend staying here. A great deal for the $."

"We just arrived home Saturday. The overall experience was great. The ONLY thing I can say bad is that the rooms do smell extremely mildewy and the beds are hard. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly and patient. Cancun was safe everywhere that we went. We took the bus downtown and had no problems at all. The front desk staff was excellent. Would not recommend spring break booking if your looking for quiet. The excursions were safe and great. We did XPLOR Park, Chichen Itsa and Dolphinais.... I would not know how to pick the best, they were all fantastic. Beautiful view, beautiful beach. As far as food, we talked with others who had stayed at other resorts and they all said we had the best. If you are from the USA you will be disapointed with beef and cheeses, but the fruit is amazing.. everything else is good."

"This was our second time in Cancun, but our first time here. Both trips were a blast, but this resort was definitely the best choice this time around. It's close to everything, the beach is fantastic. It's a busy resort, but there's always plenty of space and loungers on the beach. The service was great and it's walking to distance to everything as far as shopping and clubs. The only thing I'd have to say they could improve on, is the cleaning service for the rooms. Our sheets weren't changed the whole week and the bathrooms weren't really wiped down. But regardless, great resort and great time! We'll definitely be going back!"

"Amazing hotel! I've stayed at other all inclusives and this was by far the best. The food was amazing and the staff was friendly and helpful. With all that being said the following were my only negatives. If you go there to drink be aware that the rooms are only restocked every two days and the bartenders get progressively grumpier throughout the day particularly in the 24hr sports bar. The Don Juan buffet was great but if you plan on making reservations to their fancier restaurants be aware that they make them 2 days in advance so that will also cut into your trip. And whatever you do....no matter how hungry you are do not ever ever ever eat the hamburger patties in the snack bar. It is one for the books and should be barred from the menu considering how good everything else is."

"Probably the best thing about the Hotel is 'They never bother you to buy timeshares'. This is the third Hotel in this hotel chain that we stayed at and their 'value' is unbeatable! The only 'nitpick' I can think of is that they sometimes tend to over cook their meats. Steaks in particular are often rather tough. We will, however, continue to stay in this chain of hotels whenever possible!"

"Not Impressed!
The food in the buffet main dining is terrible. It's hard to explain, but it's like the same taste in all the desserts with a different look. The same is to be said about the other main entries. You had to book two days in advance for the specialty restaurants when there is nothing special about them or the food... You couldn't book for any of the other restaurants even though they were basically empty. I didn't get it.
The bar pool was so out of order with no control from the staff. When out of control guests were told to leave the pool, they would get out only to get right back in harassing other guests not part of their group.
I have much more to say, but have other things to do.
It's great for out of controll teens"

"THIS IS BY FAR THE WORST HOTEL I'VE EVER STAYED IN ! THE STAFF WAS RUDE, THE ROOM WAS OLD AND SMELLY. WORSE OF ALL THERE WAS A ROACH IN OUR BATH TUB! THE SHEETS FELT DIRTY AND ITCHY ! THE FOOD WAS GOOD I CANT COMPLAIN ABOUT THAT! HOWEVER THE DRINKS WERE HORRIBLE AND CHEAP LIQUOR !"

"We just got home last night from our trip to Cancun. It was excellent. The hotel is gorgeous. The staff was superb. The sports and entertainment staff kept us laughing all day. The beach was beautiful. We ate at all three of the retaurants and had excellent food and service. Make your reservations upon arrival. Looking forward to going back next year."

"What a wonderful trip. The hotel is Amazing. The price was good for the quality of the hotel, staff and food it is a steal. From the minute we walked through the door we were treated like royalty. The view from everywhere is the hotel is breathtaking. You can see the ocean from pretty much anywhere. The staff is very friendly and works very hard to make sure you're happy. Just because this resort is all inclusive does not mean you should not tip. The tips are VERY much appreciated. We are not usually big fans of buffets, however the buffet here was very good. There is something for everyone, even the picky eaters. Many reviews said the specialty rest. were not that good, we were very pleased with them and would recommend trying them. There is a fridge in the room with beer, pop and water along with a liquor dispenser with rum, tequila, vodka and brady. There is also a dr on site if needed and a drug store and many shops accross the street. There is an atm machine in the lobby, the US dollar is accepted however if you need change they cannot make it for you, so take plenty of small bills unless you want pesos. There is free wifi in the lobby area, you get 90 mins a day, or you pay 9.00 a day if you want wireless in your room. The location of the resort is nice and very safe to go walk around and check out the area, however the downtown Cancun area, not so safe I would not suggest. There were not many kids at this resort either."

"It was our first (but thanks to Riu Cancun staff not the last) trip to Mexico. We had a great vacation and we are very happy we chose Riu Cancun. I give them a triple AAA. Everything was great: staff, premises, food and all they did for the New Year celebration.
Thanks and see you again!"

"I just came from riu cancun. It is better than a lot of resort in the area. Food is good. Drinks are good but you got to ask for the premiun they got a few if you go to the pool bar. The bartendar will take care of you good and if you tip him 3 to 5 dollar or 30 to 50 (pesos) for the whole day your drink will not get empty ala carte restaurant. I only eat in the Japanese. Great! Plus the resort is very near to everything you can even walk."

"This was my first trip to Cancun and I can't wait to go back. The staff was very friendly. It helped to have one person in out group know entry level Spanish. Most of the staff were able to speak and understand basic English.
The pool and beach was very clean. We never had a problem getting fresh towels either. Just don't lose the towel card!
The restaurants were good but I agree with everyone else that you need to make reservations as soon as you arrive. Spots fill up very fast. We were lucky at showing up at the Japanese restaurant one night without a reservation.
Beds are very, very hard. Other than that I didn't have any problem with the rooms. We didn't spend much time there other than to change and sleep."

"RIU Cancun was a very nice hotel. Staff was friendly and always smiling. The Japanese and Brazilian restaurants were very good but the steak restaurant not so much. The only hassle was not being able to change US dollars to pesos but that is a new government rule not the hotel fault.
The hotel could do a better job about announcing pool activities. Unless you were right there were the activities going you wouldn't know.
Best DayTravel was always extremely helpful."

"This is my second visit to Riu Cancun Hotel. It was absolutely wonderful and i would definately recommend this hotel. It's within walking to shopping (very safe) night life and restaurants. The food is delicious at Don Juan and they usually have a theme each night. Check out the Japanese Restaurant, excellent!
I can't say enough about the activity team....WOW! They are all full of energy (from early in the morning until late at night) and go out of their way to show you a good time.
The rooms could use a facelift. They've had the same curtains, comforters,TV's for YEARS and the beds are hard. Just take advantage of the all inclusive alcohol thru the day and it wont matter.
We'll be back in October 2012. If you've never been to the RIU, GO!!!! You will get most definately get your moneys worth."

"This is a fun resort even though I was alone, there were plenty of people around. I recommend you make or attempt to make reservation for the specialty restaurants right away because they keep the number of people small, though it is a relative large resort. They really should make more reservation times with the number increased 50%. Trust me food is not the problem, there is plenty of it around."

"The Riu Cancun is a great all inclusive with all the bells and whistles. We arrived via our 'Best Day' travel shuttle from the airport which is a great service. after checking in you are asked to meet with your Best Day travel contact to confirm your pick up on your departure date. After confirming your pick up time you can go about your day, or sit with them and set-up other day trips or activities off site if you would like. Don Juan's is the buffet restaurant open for breakfast, lunch and diner and this place is amazing. My girl and I thought the food was delicious. If you plan to eat outside of Don Juan's operating hours you can grab some food at the other little open air snack area by the far pools, but this food is just OK. Try to make a reservation to one of the other restaurants for at least one night becuase these are great and a good change of pace. The only con of the Riu was the rooms, but you shouldn't plan to spend much time in your room anyways, so its not too much of a con. the room fridge is always stocked and if not you can make a call and it will be stocked in 20min. All in all I would say it was a 4 star place and I would definitely go back.
Tips:
Book restaurants the day you show up.
Take advantage of the photography vendor found in the lobby. It is free, and you only purchase pictures that you like ($14/pic).
Go off-site for market shopping. the vendors that the resort bring in are overpriced.
Take the trip to Isle Mujeres (sp?), but take the bus to downtown and catch this Ferry becuase it is much cheaper and way more dependable.
Rent a jetski. There is a vendor named Rene at he Riu beach who will give you the best deal.
Take a walk down the beach at least once and sneak into other resort pools. No one cares and its fun to get a feel for other resorts.
Have fun!"
