"My fiance and I recently celebrated our engagement at the GR Caribe for a week. The following is an honest and fair review of our experience. First off, the resort itself is absolutely beautiful! The beaches are immaculate and the water is a gorgeous blue. Plus, being an all-inclusive resort, the bartenders and wait staff are there 24/7. However, we quickly found that you can't always judge a book by its cover. The food is absolutely horrible sending us in and out of the bathroom all week (don't even think about room service) and the staff, while there to assist you at anytime, kindly make it known that tips are always appreciated and borderline expected. No one ever has change, therefore you are forced to either over-tip or not at all. We ultimately did the latter. The $100 credit was only given when we asked and it consisted of vouchers for services such as $20 for Int'l phone calls ($5 a minute equals a 4 min call...hmmm). Nothing is as it seems. I found myself suspicious of everyone the entire trip. Be prepared to be offered an additional $100 to attend an 'orientation' which is merely a time-share sales pitch. The rooms are damp (sending my allergies through the roof) leaving the sheets almost sticky and the sugar packets for your morning coffee wet. While public transportation is relatively safe and cheap, I would only leave your resort to go to 'Westernized' places like the malls or Margaritaville, etc. Everyone wants a dollar and they see tourists coming from a mile away. Avoid the markets and overpriced 'excursions' as well. They are a racket, again, to get money from tourists and are thrown in your face multiple times a day, even at the resort. Peddlers even approach you on the beach selling fake merchandise. Cancun has built up beautiful oceanfront resorts (many of which are owned by American companies) to attract tourists, but once you step off the resort, you're on your own surrounded by over 1.5 million people, most of whom live in poverty and will do anything for a dollar. There is minimal police presence. So, while the resort and beaches were nice, they were simply a facade hiding a city which most tourists would find was far from paradise. We won't be returning."

"Overall I enjoyed my visit to Cancun and my stay at Caribe. The staff were very friendly and went out of their way to make our stay memoriable.
Some of my objections would be that our oceanview room was just a window to the beach when we were under the impression that we would have a patio that looked out to sea. Also, the rooms smelled very musty and nothing helped get rid of it. The food was good but some improvement could be made to accomodate those of us who do not eat seafood or beef. The snack bar also left a lot to be desired. There was also only one choice of beer, which may have been quality in there minds but not in mine."

"The whole Cancun experience was great! We absolutely LOVED LOVED this hotel. We want to go back next year to the same hotel. The room we stayed in looked exactly like the picture of the ocean view room. It was very clean and comfortable. My husband and I were very very happy with the staff! All of the staff had smiles on their faces as you walked by and when you needed something. I have never seen such humble and hard working staff and who are consistently pleasant and helpful. We did not have one bad experience staying here. The food was surprisingly very good. I thought it would be old buffet style but it wasn't. The buffet breakfast had sooo many options to chose from and it was all fresh because the staff are all working to keep it hot and there is a quick turnover with the food. The lunch and dinners at the Bogavante were served like a fine dinning restaurant. The food was presented beautifully and it tasted great. We are from a city where mexican food is everywhere but this was the best we had had! the freshest salsa and guacamole! The wait staff was sooo nice also! Pool side and beach side service was also very nice that we didn't have to get up for a cool drink. I can not wait to go back next year! We have been recommending this place to all our friends and family to stay here! We had a great time and will definitely be back!"

"This was our first trip to an all inclusive resort. Everyone went out of their way to make our stay wonderful. so many were always on the go working so hard to make everyone feel special. Drinks were good but you have to ask for top shelf liquor and extra shots if you want them. Food was good a little different but enough variety that anyone should be able to find something on the menu. Bogavontis was our favorite and our ribeyes cooked med rare came out pink like we wanted. They do try and talk to you about time share but you need to tell them no your on vacation and your not interested. When you check in they want you to talk to someone about what your all inclusive includes don't do it they just want to get you to do a time share tour. We tipped as we went especially at the pool and beach and also tipped our maid. Beds are hard but resort is beautiful. For the price you can't go wrong if you want a 5 star resort then shell out another 1000.00. One major con the place is slippery. We saw several people fall and no they weren't drunk. I would suggest walking slowly and look down. Oh and the sea turtles are awesome got to see one having her babies one night but you can't take pictures except during the day of the turtles. Overall we will def. be back and thanks to everyone on the staff who made our vacation one of the best ever."

"This was a nice place to stay. It was clean and friendly and we managed to avoid all 'TIME SHARE' people by not making eye contact, keeping the do not disturb sign on the door and unplugging the phone. The pool was always relatively quiet with only a few other guests in the pool when we were there. We had no problems getting chairs by the pool. The wait staff were amazingly friendly and very willing to accomondate. We found that access to the royal next door was easy, however their staff was not quite as easy going or friendly as the GR staff.
Our room was quite large with a lagoon and ocean view. It was kept clean, but the halls/window sills and ledges often had dishes sitting on them sometimes for a couple of days and that somewhat ruined the decor, but otherwise it was clean and you always saw the staff cleaning or fixing something.
Take plenty of $1's and $5's for tipping, the wait staff works very hard for their meager pay and deserve any and all tips they get.
They only down side to our stay would be the quality of food. A couple of meals were very good including the lobster dinner which was amazingly good, but the rest of the food choices were very minimal and not very tasty. The wait staff tried to make things more to our liking and they did succeed most of the time, we just were not all that thrilled with our food during our stay.
Take the bus everywhere its $1 and you get anywhere in about 5-10 min.
Book excursions to Tulum (the mayan ruins) and xel-ha, they are both very much worth the money.
Over all we had a great time and were extremely pleased with the staff and thier willingness to make our vacation a pleasant one.

"Let me start by saying that the staff there was great.All requests granted quickly with a smile.But the hotel of a thousand steps needs work. Beach was nice but hard to get to from a hilside.Food was in last place compared to the last 8 times in Cancun.Wound up 4/4 of us having gastro probs on trip home.Room was ok once you travel through endless tunnels to get there.Multiple signs ditrcted you to the non existant sports bar.Had to cross the 4 lane highway 'raceway' to get to the 'beach'water activities in the alligator lagoon across the street.Shows were next door as was the swim up bar. The 50 ft free wi-fi was great in the lobby!!!!With all the great choices in Cancun ....pass on this one !!!"

"The hotel is quiet. A good choice if you prefer a more intimate setting. Next door the partner hotel is a younger crowd with more activities happening. The food is just okay but will do. It is not out of this world by any means. If you lose your bracelet, they are serious about the $70.00 repacement fee. Also getting a seat by the pool means setting your alarm and grabbing it early. Lastly, there seems to be a direct relationship between tipping consistently, and getting great service. Bring a lot of ones."

"Group of eight came down for spring break and looked for a nice all-inclusive to stay at. Being our first time down, we didn't really know what to expect. But we all were very surprised at the quality of the hotel. Rooms were nice and they kept the fridge stocked daily with water and beer. For what little time we spent in the rooms, they were quite nice. The staff is very nice and makes you feel very comfortable. Drinks were good and the bartenders were able to make about anything we asked. Food was alright, nothing special. The buffet in the resort next door is where we ate the most. This was the one thing that could have been better about the resort. Yet there was no reason to be scared of getting sick or anything, they had a few exceptional meals that were quite good. Overall, it was a really nice experience and we will definitely be back next year. Would recommend this resort to anyone!"

"I enjoyed staying here. My boyfriend and I stayed from May 12 to May 18th, and we had a good time. Our room was decently cleaned, and the overall cleanliness of the resort was good. I would give it 4 out of 5. The food was also good. I really enjoyed eating at the Bogavante restaurant by the beach and Vento restaurant. The menu changed every day, and they had something for everyone. You also gotta try the ice-cream at the Bogavante restaurant, coconut/vanilla, So good!. The breakfast menu was okay. I didn't like it as much as lunch and dinner. Some of the items on the breakfast menu were not so good. The snack bar by the pool was good also. They had plenty of choices to munch on in between meals. The staff was really polite and pleasant. The staff offers drinks constantly and greet you wherever they see you.I would rate the staff friendliness a 5 out of 5. The pool at the resort was not very big, but it was never crowded at the time we were there. We didn't have to wake up extra early to get a spot or chair by the pool. The all-inclusive deal gives you a chance to use the pool at the resort that was right next to this one, and their pool is bigger. I liked the location of the resort. It wasn't far from the airport and everything was close. It was close to the downtown and the mall area, (Isla Mall), as well as bars and clubs. If you are buying souvenirs it;s better to go ti Isla mall rather than buy it at the resort shop. The Isla mall has a better selection and better prices. I was a picture frame at the shop at the resort and it was 20 dollars and I was gonna purchase it before I leave, but I saw the same one at the Isla Mall for 8 dollars.My boyfriend and I also went to a bar Senor frog's and it was a blast. We had such a good time there. We finished our vacation by going there our last night and it was so much fun. The drinks were good there and it was such a crazy place to dance it off and drink, simply just have fun. We also went across the resort and went kayaking and rode on the pedal boat. That was fun, even though I was scared to go far. The beach was also very pretty. There were no rocks on the beach, which was good. I was a bit worried about that before I went on a vacation. There is some coral reef washed up on the shore but not much. I was a staff member cleaning it off the beach early in the morning when I was leaving the room to get breakfast, so it's not a big deal at all. Overall, I had a great time with my boyfriend, and I was satisfied with this resort. I would definitely recommend it to others."

"This resort was great The food was excellent except for the hamburgers at the pool. The service was fantastic everyone at this resort works very hard to please you. If your looking to relax stay on this side the royal next door is bigger and much busier but the buffet at the royal was very good though The food at Veneto's restaurant was fantastic as well The only bad thing I can say is that the concierge will promise you anything he will LIE and DECEIVE to get you to go to the timeshare presentation at their sister property but will not deliver He promised one guys wife a massage and facial but when she went to the spa they said they would only pay for the massage. Now he was very nice to me all week said he would do something special for my wife and I because we were there for our 27th wedding anniversary ( He never did anything) and asked me to consider going to visit and talk about the timeshare I finally said yes and he agreed to my request of a bottle of Don Jolie 1942 which is a $ 130. bottle of tequila that seemed fair most places were offering $ 150. cash to go visit their timeshares I did not ask for anything else. When my wife and I finished the tour and endured their 2 hour sales pitch I said no thank you I would not like to spend $ 18000. and pay a $450. monthly fee plus pay a $100. a night each to have a timeshare and now they are not so nice anymore they give me a $ 50 coupon for their gift shop and certificate for a three night stay at another resort that would cost me $ 800 to use and a beach bag for my wife how generous When I get back to our resort I ask for the concierge but he was out I explained to the girl that was in our agreement and she told me he would take care of it tomorrow I went to see him in the morning our last day at the resort and he tells me that I can get my bottle of don jolie 1942 at the gift shop which I tell him that's not possible because they do not have that tequila in the gift shop .He brings me over to the shop and hands me a $ 42. bottle of don jolie reposado . There is a big difference between these tequilas I did not get anything from him except a sorry nothing I can do. my wife picked up a few gifts with the $ 50. I would go back to this resort but I will not go on anymore timeshare tours"

"Just returned from our stay in Cancun. We had a blast relaxing by the beach, eating and drinking. The property is in the beginning of hotel zone, so if you're looking for more nightlife or spring break type of crowd, stay in the middle of the hotel zone. Hotel was very quiet compared to the hotel next door. Food was just ok, but the drinks were pretty good. Rooms are nice and always clean. Overall, it was a good experience for our first time in Cancun."

"Overall everything was excellent. However, we did not care for the rooms at the GR Caribe. We even asked to be moved when they took us to our room upon arrival because it was on the 1st floor and made us feel like we were in a dungeon. The 2nd room was better, however, the sunken living area was kind of useless for us because you could not see out the windows. Why have windows with a nice veiw if you can't see out? I had to climb up on the sofa to see out. We did not stay in our rooms any longer than we had to becasue it wasn't enjoyable - no balcony and couldn't enjoy the view. We spent most of our time at the connecting Royal Solaris. If we had not had access to the other resort, it would not have been a very enjoyable visit for us. GR Caribe was quiet, low key but not what we wanted. The GR Caribe resort itself was o.k., but sure not what we expected by the description. We were led to believe that it was recently remodeled and updated???? Not much there to 'enjoy' unfortunately. It was clean and the people were extremely nice and helpful, but the room left alot to be desired. The bar, restaurants were o.k. at GR Caribe, but If we return, we will stay at the Royal Solaris since that is where we spent the majority of our time - much nicer pool area, gym, entertainment areas and eating options. The features of our room were fine - huge bed, stocked refrigerator, nice bathroom, closet but not being able to enjoy the windows/view was a real downer for us. It was tough enough that we couldn't get a balcony, let alone not even be able to enjoy a window. The concierge - Hilda - was fabulous! We loved her. The Royal Solaris options were really nice; we thoroughly enjoyed the pool area everyday."

"Ive been to 3 different resorts in cancun and I really liked the layout of the GR Caribe. having 2 resorts in one was a real plus and the service was very friendly and helpful. the choice between the poolside lounging or going to a wonderful beachfront to lay out by the ocean was fantastic. even better, the wait staff from the pool bar come right down and fill up your glass with great timing.
now for the parts we didnt like. the food left a lot to be desired. the resort could really use a executive chef to get some more quality out of the kitchens. I had plenty to eat but I cant say even one of the dishes was good. it was just food. the made to order omelet's were the best meal you could get.
the resort could use some common bar areas to mingle with other guests. most of the bars are grab your drink and go over to your spot leaving a gap in conversations with the other guests. we didnt meet many other couple at all because of that. they are in need of a sit down bar.
all in all, it was a great resort and we would visit again for the value."

"Just returned from the GR Caribe with my family. Excellent hotel. Really airy with lots of open air spaces to eat or relax. The elegant bohemian style decor was gorgeous. The hotel was very clean, staff were friendly and the choice and quality of food was excellent. We travelled with our twin 6 yr old girls and it was perfect for them too. Mini gollf, kids pool and the kids club always had fun craft activities or parties going on or supervised swimming in the mini water park.
Loads of things to do. Surfing in the waves, tennis, and the use of all the facilities in the hotel adjacent. And you can take a 15 minutes bus ride to the market and shops. Cancun nightlife far away enough not to be heard and close enough for partiers to hop in a cab or join one of the hotel tours for a night of clubbing. Fantastic place. Dont normally go to the same place twice but would definitely return to the GR Caribe."

"My three sisters and I spent a week at GR Caribe and we really loved the hotel. I stayed at Royal Solaris last May and I found this hotel to be much quieter and a little higher end. We enjoyed being able to go back and forth to both hotels and spent part of each day at Solaris pool but when it got a little too noisy we came back to the comfort and quiet of GR Caribe. The food was excellent and the staff were very accommodating and pleasant. I would definitely stay at this hotel again and recommend it to my family and friends."

"This was the worst hotel I had ever stayed at! The walls in the room were very thin and i was able to hear clearly what the next room was doing. The meals were the same everyday and caused my friend and I hourly trips to the bathroom. Top shelf alcohal was provided during the days but in the evening i was advised that 'it is expensive and we ran out of it' very dissapointing. while you sit at the beach you have people constantly appraoching you to buy things,
i would not advise anyone to stay here. this is not a 4star hotel but rather a 1 star."

"yes this hotel has been refurbished......& they did a great job.......Not all the rooms have a balcony so be specific when you book ( ie Room with a balcony & ocean view) although there are only 200 rooms this made for a really nice vacation as you were not tripping over other people at any of the restaraunts, pools, & beach chairs were still available until 9:30 a.m.The wait staff were excellent & not only waiters but they were also entertainers as they made your dinner experience a memorable one. You did not have to book your AL A carte but strongly recommend that you show up at a decent time or your wait could be longer than you planned on. Once again due to the # of people at this resort ( 100% occupancy) all the staff smiled,said hell-o & did their utmost to make your stay a memorable one.
The only downfall was that they had 2 hot tub pools & although there was signage to indicate that children were not allowed in the hot tubs there was
always children in the hot tubs , this should be policed more OR have signage that no one under the age of 16 ( ?) be allowed in the hot tubs
This hotel is rated as a 5 star &we would rate it at a 4 1/2 star

"My wife and I just go back from Cacun where we stayed at Gr Caribe for 6 days. The food at the resort was absolutely amazing. This is a five star hotel with top notch food, service and breath taking views.I would suggest that all potential trip takers add this hotel to your list of possibilities. The south hotel zone is exactly where you want to be. The water and hotel qualities seem to be much better in the south as recomended to us by the locals.We liked the tranquility of the resort and most of all the staff was very friendly and acommodating. Overrall experience was good and we are planning to return there in the summer."

"The accommodations exceeded my expectations. Cancun is beautiful this time of the year.
But I was extremely disappointed with BOOK IT!. My airport transfer was not handled correctly, which left me in the airport making international calls trying to fix the issues. I also booked a day excursion to X-Caret, very disappointed with the coordination, I was forced to request a refund and cancel my days' activities.

"My husband and I went to Cacun in March 2011 we stay at Gr Caribe for 6 days. The food at the resort wasvery good and the service at the restaurant was also good, the rooms clean with one exception, trays of food being left outside the rooms to be pick-up not until the next morning. We liked the tranquility of the resort and most of all the staff was very friendly and acommodating. Overrall experience was good and we are planning to return this winter. "
