This hotel is like staying in a local themed museum, art works and furnishings that are evocative of an earlier era, without losing modern conveniences and comforts. Friendly staff and good location. Double balconies on one of my 2 rooms was truly amazing. One on the street, the other on the inner courtyard. For a lovely romantic weekend with your mate, this hotel would be high on my list.

The hotel was really a surprise, even for every piece of furniture, from the reception to the corridors leading to the room. The room was very pleasant, very "personal" because of the decoration and beautiful pieces of furniture. I wish we could have stayed longer!

A well-located classic hotel with luxurious inner decorations. Bought and renovated by an architect and turned it into one of the best luxurious boutique hotel. The spacious room is nearly perfect with complimentary drinks, jacuzzi and working desk. I did not try the breakfast but prefer you try the Bee Hwa Cafe nearby. Overall, the hotel is affordable and pleasant to stay.

The Penaga has a classy and elegant atmosphere that is not ostentatious. Our room on the top floor which was on two levels was spacious, extremely comfortable and very tastefully decorated. The wooden beams, floors and staircase gave it a very warm feel. The large desk and balcony in addition to the living space on the lower level made it specially pleasing. The location of the hotel is within walking distance of all the interesting venues in George Town. Reception staff were extremely helpful a... Read more

We stayed at the Penaga for five nights in mid May occupying two balcony rooms looking over the charming garden. I heartily endorse the enthusiastic comments of other five star reviewers. This hotel is a cool, calm, elegant oasis on the edge of the buzzing World Heritage heart of Georgetown. The staff were all charming and endlessly helpful. Lots of little extras - daily newspaper, complementary snacks and drinks, fruit and even a large slice of cake with candle and a chorus of "happy birthd... Read more

We stayed from 12-14 June . The hotel room is rather spacious and with peranakan furniture. The plus point is the jacuzzi equip bath tub. The downside is it can be disturbing when we are sleeping as we were able to hear guests walking on the level above us. We did feedback to the service staff and the thumping of footsteps were less frequent. The service was rather efficient and we were lucky to meet a lady on our 1st day as she highlighted the events/places we could go and the mode of transpor... Read more

We stayed in mid May for 4 nites. We arrived at the hotel late night and most shops nearby were already closed. Check in was smoothed and our room was perfect. We choose the room with the balcony facing the garden and comes with a jacuzzi tub which we didn't have time to use. The hotel is surrounded with eateries such as the popular Transfer Rd roti canai and roti bakar. Walking distance to many places of interest. I highly recommend this hotel for those who appreciate an old charm.

Stayed for one night, with 2 children. Tasteful decor with modern peranakan twist. We like the earthy wooden antiques furnishings. Clean rooms with efficient and good service. The extra bed was delivered to our room very promptly. Their staff at the front counter and concierge were very helpful with directions and tips of places to eat and for shoes repair (we were heading off to Borobudur the next morning and wanted to have my daughter's favorite runner repaired) nearby. There is parking on sit... Read more

Architecturally perfect and located near the center of George Town, Hotel Penaga is a great place to base yourself whilst tasting all that Penang has to offer. Great staff, both front and back of house, tastefully decorated rooms that overlook a beautifully kept garden. Walkiing distance to shopping, the Red Garden hawkers' market and the Blue Mansion. The only thing that stops this from being a 5 star review is the restaurant. Whilst the bar is small and intimate, the restaurant felt cold and ... Read more

I stayed in a Hutton Balcony room and I managed to get the Loft. Bed upstairs, living room downstairs. The hotel is done up in the old way with timber floorboards which creaks from time to time but I like the charm of such hotels. The room was furnished with old furniture and artwork adorned the walls. Thankfully the bathroom was modern. The service at this hotel cannot be faulted. They sliced my mangoes for me when I asked for a knife and they even place water next to the bed when they turned d... Read more

Have stayed here many times in the past and was always charmed by this place as it has great old charm coupled with modern amenities. However our recent stay was slightly disappointing as the room we stayed in was dusty everywhere including the fan when you switch it on! The bathroom was not very clean, the towels and sheets were stained. There were a couple of lights that were not functioning properly. Our stay was during non peak season hence not sure why the housekeeping was bad. Also, th... Read more

Stayed here on the recommendation of friends. Absolutely loved it. The staff are extremely friendly, Tina in the restaurant is just lovely, just had a great massage, in walking distance to everything in George town. Staff such as Krishna, harka and tan in are good people. My only complaint is a first world problem type petty complaint, there is no Tele at the end of the bed. I like to watch Tele in bed while on holidays but there is so much to do in penang it was not a problem. I wouldn't he... Read more

Wonderful suite. Unfortunately directly next to renovation-area, so somewhat noisy. The staff is friendly and speak English well enough. The restaurant is basic and not very good. The hotelpool is nice and positioned very special. I had a wonderful 5 nights stay.

I stayed here as a special treat for a friend who visited me out in Penang. We didn't eat here or use the pool but my friend did use the spa facilities and was very impressed. The room we had was double balcony; breakfast wasn't included but we are across the street at a local place. The facilities within the room was wonderdul; especially the spa type bath!!!! Great bed and some really cool artwork on the walls. Hmmm...not too sure about the cow hide chair and footstool but being a fully blown ... Read more

This relaxing hotel, formed from several beautifully restored colonial era shophouses, may be a short way away from George Town's main streets, but don't let that put you off. The rooms are tasteful and comfortable and the staff friendly and welcoming. As others have noted, though, I wouldn't eat in the hotel's restaurant. You can find far better (and cheaper) eats on Penang's stunning street food scene, only a few minutes' walk away. One small niggle: on checking out I was presented with a... Read more

I have stayed here twice, always in the converted shop front "townhouse" which has a kitchen, spa pool, balcony, 2 bedrooms/bathrooms, and living area. The decor is a mix of traditional and contemporary but works well. The bedrooms are very comfortable and having the space to relax in your own living room is great for a group of friends or a family. The staff are very nice and will help with your activities. This hotel is a bit of a walk from central Georgetown but still close enough.

The staff at the Hotel Penaga greeted us warmly and when we were showed to our rooms we were very pleasantly surprised. Spacious rooms that were a lovely blend of old and new. Bed was very comfortable and the room had everything we needed. The pool was a welcome relief when we got back from walking around the old area. Food was ok and there was entertainment if you needed it. The spa was close and ladies were wonderful. Would stay there again if I went back to Penang

Very charming boutique hotel! We had a double twin room, styled like a loft so there was plenty of space. Clean room and neat touches like stained glass and local art. Location is great. Beds were very Western-style comfortable. Within easy walking distance to many good food stops like Tai Tong for dim sum and Kimberly Street. Staff were kind and helpful. Would love to return!

A very nice, homey and comfortable place to stay. It is an old existing old shop lot converted into a hotel. Very interesting with a combination of new, modern and old furniture and room furnished. Enjoy your stay there and if you wish to eat.. Nasi kandar restaurant is just across the street.

Its my 2nd time staying. Low rise hotel and believe it was converted from shophouses. Lift is available. The deco of the room is full of antiques. It's cozy and comfortable. Just take note for those staying in the loft suite. The stairs that connect from the bed room to the living hall is very slippery. I fell twice during my 1st stay in this hotel. Hotel parking is just right at the door step.

A very attractive receptionist glided me around her very special Boutique Hotel. This quite stunning hotel has such fine exquisite detail to design and quality one needs to pay a visit as I did this afternoon. Former town houses now under one roof offer unique and speciall infividual rooms all different. The interior furnishings are worthy of many International Awards. An eclectic mix of old and new which sit side by side to give that ambience. Can fully commend such a SECRET GEM.

The rooms are spacious and well appointed. The artwork is interesting and the furniture stylish. The hotel is within an easy walk of the UNESCO world heritage area and is on the routes of various hop on and hop off type tour buses.

We stayed here for 3 nights and it was the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of Georgetown - we had a Hutton room which was beautifully appointed and very large and comfortable - and had a jacuzzi bath! Didn't try the restaurant as there is so much to eat nearby - suggest the Indian place across the road for breakfast, delicious! All in all, the hotel was perfect for us and the staff extremely helpful - would highly recommend!

A shout out also the the very nice service staff at the front desk who helped us immensely with a booking glitch. The hotel is great, very nice style and great design. We stay at Penaga Suite and it was beautiful: two bedrooms, two bathrooms (one with jacuzzi) and tv/reading room. We arrived at Hari Raya in the evening and our welcome was fantastic. The kids loved the pool and the environment at the hotel is nice and relaxed. Breakfast is nice, good to have Milo!!! Chose this hotel after considering all options within the area since It's my first time in Penang after so many years. Stayed here for 2 nights and I've to say that the hotel provided splendid service right from the first day I reached the hotel doorstep till my last day. Moreover, post check-out, the hotel helped me to post some of my clothes which I left behind in the hotel room back to my home address!. Will definitely revisit this hotel again in the future, given the choice.
