I am writing this review because I had no idea what to expect, staying at a ryokan for the the first time. I thought maybe it would be like a japanese bed & breakfast, but it was so much more. I cannot imagine that most ryokans are this beautiful. You walk up beautiful stone steps to enter...It is a high- design, super- stylish, artfully and warmly maintained private ryokan experience. Our booking was last minute online and half-board, so we didn't know what to expect. What we got was, a lovely... Read more

This was my first time in a ryokan, I think they have done their best to adjust the experience to the Western traveler and I am quite grateful for that. The place could not be better located for Kyoto right next to a shrine and park, by the river and Gion. It is wonderful. The rooms are clean, really it's a Japanese style boutique hotel, which justifies the price as well. Breakfast is great too, if you are prepared to eat fish for breakfast that is.. You do get a grapefruit or citrus juice that ... Read more

Trying to rate the Yuzuya Ryokan has been a bit of a challenge. It was my first ryokan experience, and therefore I don't feel like I have much frame of reference, but for all you ryokan neophytes out there, here was my experience. Having come from a very (almost over-) friendly hotel, Yuzuya Ryokan presented much more of the reserved hospitality I expected to receive in Japan. The entrance is beautiful, and the common areas (reception area, dining room) are calm, tranquil and beautiful. Th... Read more

The ryokan, or traditional Kyoto inn, is a must for travelers wanting to learn of the culture of Japan. Nestled behind a wooden gate on a hillside, the Yuzuya Ryokan is a delight! Be ready to wear kimonos, try traditional Japanese dinner and breakfast, sleep on very comfortable futon beds and bathe in a mineral bath. Plus, the staff is delightful and the inn is in a perfect sightseeing location.

Gracious service, above and beyond expectations. I was somewhat concerned staying at a Ryokan .......I am Celiac and eating gluten free is a challenge in Japanese cuisine. Soy sauce contains wheat and is in everything...... Yuzuya Ryokan took great care with modifying their food offerings so that I could eat freely without worry. They were so very accommodating and the food they prepared was delicious. Had a magical stay and even got engaged!

Worth all the dollars! I only have positive things to say about Yuzuya, with zero cons. - The service is impeccable, from the front desk staff, the porters, the wait staff, etc, everyone was wonderful. - We could only afford to stay one night while in Kyoto, but the front desk team was more than happy to store our luggage all day on our check out day, let us change and use the facilities, and call a restaurant to make a dinner reservation all after we had already checked out. - The rooms are... I visited Yuzuya Ryokan with a friend on May 31 for two nights. We had arrived in Kyoto from 5 awesome days in Tokyo. What a TREAT! Our room was lovely and very well appointed. The staff was courteous and professional. We were prepared for the "traditional" experience so we came with an open mind. It was wonderful that we had our own bath with traditional shower as well as the option to use the lovely public bath area (which we did each day). What a nice way to wind down from a warm and busy day... Read more

Booked this Ryokan on the basis of web searches and this being our first visit to Japan, had no idea if the location was good. Can definitely say it was one of our best choices. We stayed here for two nights and due to lack of availability, one further night in a modern 4 star hotel near Kyoto station. This Ryokan is in a superb spot for Kyoto, right in the heart of the Gion district and historical Geisha area. This was one of our favourite locations in Kyoto, well placed for sightseeing, rest... The service at Yuzu-ya is excellent - the staff are all extremely helpful. Located right next to the Yasaka Shrine, once you're inside all the hustle and bustle disappears. The rooms are spacious (for two) and comfortable. Love the futons and the hotel's yukata are comfy to wear to bed. Breakfast was a feast! The fresh yuzu (citrus) juice is a real pick me up, and having fresh fish and other Japanese dishes was a treat. It was always nice to soak in the yuzu-filled onsen after a busy day, and s... If you are in Japan for the first time having a purse with a little extra, - stay a night in that hotel. If not get a lunch there. Taking a bath and enjoy contemplating about how time can stand still like in the Yuzu Ryokan. How food can be prepared and taste like in the Yuzu Ryokan. The atmosphere and the service elevates you to the most what now can serve. The hotel restaurant is placed next to the Yasaka Jinjya - not expecting when entering the Gate and climbing up the stone stairs that a li... Read more

Absolutely money well spent ! I stayed here for two nights with my 14 year old nephew. Outstanding service, beautiful room, fantastic location (literally a minutes walk to main shopping, and hundreds of restaurants). Rooms were spotless. We had the best time - loved coming back from dinner and having our futons ready made up.

Felt like I had to keep pinching myself that this place was real. The food was truly exceptional (both breakfast and dinner). I can't imagine better service. Rooms are remarkable. The location is in central Gion and a perfect place to have your base in Kyoto. If you want to do Kyoto right, add this traditional high end Ryokan to your itinerary. I will be back for sure!!

I stayed at Yuzuya for 2 nights during mid October. The service and the food were excellent, but my room was extremely noisy. The building itself was very pretty. The reception and the restaurant were nicely decorated and designed with view of garden and waterfall. However, the room was really small and quite standard and did not really have any view either. I was unfortunately appointed to the room facing the entrance of the ryokan and the intersection of 2 street streets, so it was terribly ... Read more

This traditional Ryokan is located next a famous area in Kyoto full with temples. The entrance is slightly hidden and since it does not have signs other than the ones in Japanese, it is very easy to walk passed. It is however located on a very busy street but once you enter the Ryokan, everything becomes very tranquil. The rooms are as you expect traditional. Don't expect grand luxury but a rather understated luxury. There is no bed, but once you go for dinner a bed / futon is made which is com... Read more

Yuzuya is accessed from a small black gate next to the Yasaka shrine. You step from a busy road into a world of tranquility. The attention to detail is superb, as is the service. Both breakfast and dinner are of a very high standard.
