Dated, but very traditional Japanese hotel. The interior is dated, however the hotel is close to main attractions, and it even has a traditinal Japanese Onsen. Early evening staff comes to your room, to make your bed on the tatami floor.

This was the first time I stayed in a room with western bed and tatami. Quite big and the room well equipped. The location also good to explore the Kyoto, quite near to the hot spot-Kiyomizudera, Gion etc. The hotsprings are powerful to message your tired body, especially the falling one that I enjoy most. The dinner were a full set and there also some side buffet dishes around but you can't try all because you will really full with the main set. The breakfast also within expectation. The only... Hotel Tozankaku is well located for touring Kyoto's eastern temples, especially Kyomizudera and Sanjusangendo, for a quick taxi ride to Kyoto Station, and for buses. It's tired and dated--no outlet in the dreary bathroom, no blow-dryer, etc.--but is entirely typical of Japanese hotels. Our tatami room faced the garden and away from the street and was very quiet, except for some noisy neighbors audible from the next room. Note that the tatami rooms are smoking rooms and the odor lingers. Incl... Read more

This "modern" ryokan is well past its prime and in need of updating. Staff is friendly, but short on English speakers. Public areas are drab and bathrooms are dated. On the other hand, we had authentic experience seeing busloads of Japanese and Chinese tourists come and go at this place that reminded us of a "Howard Johnson." Breakfast buffet was definitely decent as was the public bath facility. Bedrooms with traditional tatami mats were well sized and clean, though also decidedly dated an... Read more

Stayed for one night in a Japanese style room with traditional futon beds. As other reviewers have said, the hotel is a bit tired and dated, but we really loved our experience here. During two weeks in Japan we stayed mostly in tiny rooms in business hotels and were delighted by the spacious room we had here. A large tatami room, separated by sliding doors from a small sitting room that overlooked the garden. Our room also had a full bathroom with toilet, sink and shower. The hotel staff spoke l... Stayed here with a tour group run by Samurai Tours (excellent tour group that allows you to tour Japan like a local). Pros: 1) The location. Right next to a major bus stop and down the street from a convenience store and a laundromat! 2) Amazing customer service3) Value for price. Cons: 1) Western rooms still has tatami style seating. Bad for those with knee issues. 2) In-room showers only available in western room and the pressure of the water is poor so you may find yourself screaming from hot... Read more

Typical japanese hotel in Kyoto. Not the most confortable...the hotel is old and needs some refurbishment but is OK for a couple of days while you are visiting the town. Breakfast buffet is poor...and 80% of the staff don't speak any english...anyway all of them were really friendly. Is a hotel for locals more than for western people.
