This is my 3rd ryokan style stay in Japan. The 1st and best in terms of all factors was in Kyoto, but that is another story. The 2nd in Noboribetsu was acceptable but not up to expectations after the excellent Kyoto experience. My group of 10 stayed in the Japanese style rooms for 1 night. We had 5 rooms in total. We travelled to Hakone Yumoto station on the Odakyu Romance Limited Express train from Shinjuku using the Hakone Free Pass with reserved seats. The distance between Pax Yoshino and... Read more

Our son has raved long and often about be benefits of the traditional Japanese Onsen. Having lived in Japan for the last few years he's a bit of an aficionado. So as we were visiting Japan we decided to take the full Japanese experience . We were not disappointed. The location is stunning, tucked away in a steep sided valley which we accessed via the local railway giving beautiful views of the local scenery. Unlike some locations Hakone has allowed modern development to process alongside the... Read more

Stayed at this onsen resort with a group of 10 people in total. Location wise, it is about 10-15mins walk from Yumoto station. The walk is quite manageable and you can walk past the main street near Yumoto station. However if you have large or many luggages, i would think the round trip shuttle bus at 100yen is a better option. Though if there are many people, you may need to wait for a more empty bus. The traditional japanese room with attached bath and toilet is better than what i expected... Read more

Stayed here for 1 night after exploring Hakone for the day and it was a lovely experience. We bought the Hakone free pass from Shinjuku station and spent the day sightseeing by many means of transportation (train, cable car, rope way, pirate boat, bus). Hotel is only 15 min slow walk from nearby station, along river. Easy check in and dinner time negotiated if you purchase dinner in hotel stay. Staff were great in putting out traditional beds for us while enjoying dinner in dining room. Boyfrien... Read more

Nice place to stay, rest, eat and enjoy onsen relaxation in beautiful Hakone. I booked the room through a travel agency hoping to find a place without a tattoo restriction. I have zero, my friend....she has sleeves and pretty much too much to count. Typically tattoos in Japan are taboo/not culturally accepted. They referred me here. Although the public baths on the 5th floor doesn't allow tattoos there's a small onsen with the room and private onsens available to reserve. The location:... Read more

I didn't realise that we'd be staying in a typical ryoken style room. It was relaxing and very comfortable! Great experience for my young son. The waitress we had for breakfast and lovely, special 7 course dinner was delightful and made my son oragami weapons and spoke some English, which helped us navigate through our dinner. We found an amazing little area close to our hotel (turn RIGHT as you exit hotel and go up the hill), it had a peaceful shrine area, waterful and pool with carp. What a f... Read more

We stayed one night here and loved it. The ryokan has a traditional room which converts into a bedroom using mats. Very comfortable. We also used the indoor and outdoor onset on site and had a traditional Japanese meal in our own dining room served on low tables. If you are looking for that sort of experience I would recommend this location. Hakone itself is stunning with lakes, rope ways and trains to get you around a very peaceful location.

We stayed for 2 lovely nights in a family tatami room. The room was the nicest one I've ever stayed at and the baths were luxurious. One dinner was challenging - live grilled abalone. The teenagers got an authentic experience of onsen and resort in Japan. I appreciated the gender equality access to the outdoor bath. A great stay.

Stayed 1-night in Pax Yoshino- Super hospitable services from the staff. Requested for upgrade to river view room with in-room onsen upon check in. We were even allowed to view the room type before making our decision despite them being almost booked out. River view room totally worth the price as it was indeed river facing. The sound of the flowing water provides tranquility although it is pure darkness at night - so be sure to close up the windows once the skylight is out due to flying insects... Read more

We stayed in the hotel for 2 nights to have the ryokan experience. The hotel es very near the Yumoto station. The lobby is very modern and the staff was amazing! BUT even thought the room was big it smell really bad. I could not stand it. Every time a step in the room out of the shower the smell just smacks you in the face. Everything else was just fine. Just the smell was really bad.

The hotel staff was very nice and helpful. They even had a Mandarin speaking trainee to serve us at the front desk. The Japanese room was a bit old but spacious, with a beautiful river view. The most amazing experience for us was the Kaiseki dinner. The lady who served us was very polite and professional. The food was well presented and taste delicious. Each dish was an art. The buffet breakfast was good with quite a lot of varieties. The only thing was that the onsen is a bit small.

Hotel is a little out of the main town ( appx 10 min walk) which is good as it makes for more quiet location. It is very modern in a 1980's kind of way. It has a large lobby and restaurant. Onzen was very good. Room chosen was semi traditional i.e. a bed but on mats. Room did smell as per other reviews but I think this is the nature of the onzen. It was not too bad and you don't smell it after a while. Room very large with all items required for onzen supplied. Food in restaurant was good with g... Read more

This ryokan is a fairly high level, and has slightly westernised rooms as well as traditional Japanese rooms. It also has both public onsen (thermal spring baths) and private ones that can be hired for an hour. The standard of food was extremely high, and the Japanese evening meals were excellent. Housekeeping standards were very good. The ryokan provided traditional clothing to wear in the hotel, which added to the experience.

This was my first trip to Japan. The agency that I worked with to arrange this self-guided trip urged me to spend at least one night in a ryokan. I'm glad I did. While it is a modern hotel, one can still choose to sleep on the floor on mats or in a bed. And, while the traditional way is to have food served in one's room, here you go to a common dining room. In the room are traditional garments for a guest to wear. And many, if not most, did so at dinner and then again at breakfast. If you... Read more

We booked the hotel online last minute in summer and the price was still fair. Basic room but with all one needs for a base camp to a trip to Mount Fuji. Liked the spa area. A bit remote but the walk by the river is nice. There is a bus service to the hakone station. Would go there again.

The BIG recommendation for our first trip to Japan was to stay for a couple of nights in a ryokan. Our agent put us in Pax Yoshino, and we were very pleased it was a full board booking. The hotel was modern and stylish, the staff helpful to a fault, and near the town of Hakone, a delight in itself. We loved the onsens or spa rooms, where males and females are segregated‚?¶this is Japan, remember, but you must use them in the buff!! Describing it as fantastic doesn‚??t do it justice. The spa room... Read more

This hotel is perfect for relaxing after a day in Hakone. I stayed one night there as part of a tour around Japan so I don't know the exact price of it. The rooms are big with a small bathtub, a nice balcony, a Japanese style shower and sofa bed. They provide you with many amenities such as razors, toothbrushes, toothpaste,...you don't need to bring a lot from home. Also there are yukatas in the room that you have to try at least for taking pictures. Obviously the main attraction is the onsen i... Read more

This hotel is first class wow factor. Just a short walk from the railway station (probably not after dark), this hotel has everything from very stylish (Japanese) and large rooms complete with bathtub, balcony and option of futon beds on tatami matting or traditional western style beds. The staff were very helpful at all times and made us feel welcome after a full days travelling. The Onsen spa rooms on the 5th floor are not for the shy type given you are required to remove your entire clothes, ... Read more

First exposure to a ryokan, very comfortable and well located for exploring the local area. Only a short walk from the station but we recommend you get the bus unless you know the hotel well as you would miss it.
